Dude, can't thank you enough for having the motivation and chops to make these videos. Whatever the good points of healthcare are, quality time, service and good outpatient patient home care maintenance information is not always among them, nor does customer service improve as the prices go up. Your vids are not only helpful, but if one is not used to a tube hanging out of a most sensitive part of their body, they also can have a fear calming effect. Thanks again brother.

@tompassaretti6645 Awwww man!!! Thank you for the kind words of support. It means a great deal to me that I helped you...even a little bit.
Like you said - there is limited information and support provided at all levels, which to me is the true definition of adding insult to injury.
I never thought in a million years I would have the nerve to do these types of videos on a topic that is so private, however, becoming a peer support for the tens of thousands of people the videos have helped I could not be more proud and humbled.
Cheers and wishing you and your loved ones great health. Tony

You're very welcome. I've coined a terrible term for what can happen down there from the bodies natural discharge that doesn't go through the catheter.....sandpaper willy. I'm sorry but it does adequately describe it.
Your nurse did better than I and most when it came to getting any info on keeping the catheter clean. So many people just had it put in....often their first was in the ER, like me....and sent home with no information or for that matter with any supplies. It's insane and I'm working on changing it, so that the urologists/nurses provide basic information. Too many people will have to experience having a catheter for a variety of medical reasons and not getting any information on how to live with it, is like adding insult to injury.
As for the UTI, I am sorry to say, that if you have a catheter for any length of time, a UTI has a higher risk of developing. I think I had two in three months. I hope hope hope it won't happen to you. Fingers crossed.

      6/1/24@11:25am Hey, Tony,
Thank you so much for your videos!!! I’m a 70 year old guy and just got my prostate removed on Thursday. After getting home and resting for a few hours and my bag started getting full, it hit me that I needed to start learning this whole catheter routine. Reading the instructions on the bag is okay, but I said to myself, “I wonder if someone has made a RUclips video about this?” Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences. The only thing I would have you add is a little trigger warning that some viewers may chuckle at your great sense of humor, so be prepared for a little pain from laughing. Maybe a little video on how to ease the pain when you’re laughing. Although a bit painful, laughter was good a good medicine to ease into this temporary change in lifestyle. Thank you again!!!

I know that feeling of "life is over" all too well. I've been there and had to have some real heart-to-heart conversations with myself to get through it all. It is tough and requires some serious mental gymnastics to get through it but you can as so many of us have. I know I went through a period of loss and that my old life was over. I also asked why me? However once, stopped asking why me and started realizing it was just my turn, because I'm not special why should I be immune from a health crisis. I realized that there would be life after everything, including my prostatectomy surgery.
In a weird and wonderful way, it has made me a better person. More kind, and empathetic, and has added purpose. I certainly don't take my health or the resources I had to get me through for granted.
If you ever want to talk, email me. I've spoken to tons of people and it has helped to talk to someone that's been there. We laugh, and we talk about the ups and downs, our fears, our journey with dealing with prostate, BPH, catheters, aging, etc. All kinds of stuff that only people who have had to deal with a urinary catheter can understand. Sometimes it's funny AF.....like adult diapers and putting them on for the first time and actually going in them. I coulda swore everyone knew what I was doing LOL!

OMG so real! I never had an issue with the “crusting”, until the last catheter I had. The nurse clearly was “not a regular” catheter inserter, she even ask another nurse to “standby”. Anyway, I think the reason I had issues this time, was precisely because she put too much of the tube in… so there was that “room” for movement. Anyway, I cleaned and showered daily, so thankfully it wasn’t a major issue , but yeah, watch for the crust people!

I thank you for the information that NOBODY, not my urologist, my primary physician, or any of the ER people who replaced my catheter several times, even mentioned in passing. A few tips I learned slowly: don't use chlorine bleach to sanitize your collection bags. Even diluted and washed out, bleach makes the bags deteriorate, grow brittle and leak. Wash out the bag and hose with water first, then add 6 to 8 ounces of vinegar, fill the bag with warm water and let it sit all night, or at least 30 minutes.. Drain it and wash out with water, then hang it and let it dry. Get one of those rubber shower hoses that connect to a faucet (for washing pets or your hair in a sink), cut off the shower head side, hook the cut hose to the catheter hose and wash out the bag that way. Hold the faucet side tight to the bathroom sink faucet nozzle to minimize leaks. Doctors won't give you enough bags; buy two or three off eBay. I'd tell you more, but I don't have the video gear, a human looking face or the performer's ego to make RUclips videos. Thanks again!

Man, you really wanted that thing outta you. I'm happy to hear you are doing much better. The physical toll is one thing, but the mental and emotional toll is, in my opinion, equally difficult and often completely ignored. It needs to be addressed because to get through it all, it's the mind-body connection. Once you get your head in the game it becomes much more manageable.

You're so welcome. I'm really glad that you found the videos helpful. It's definitely not an easy topic to discuss due to the location and no one knows what it's like unless they've had a catheter also.
I've taken it a few steps further than the videos by talking to individuals around the world for that exact reason. It's been great to offer peer support and it really helps people to talk to someone who knows what it's like living with the archaic device. I don't have all the answers and don't offer medical advice, but people want to connect as it can be a very isolating journey. I spoke to one guy, who has four daughters, and they were all very concerned, which he was grateful for. However, all the unwarranted attention around his privates was becoming unnerving. He just wanted a break a lil break. We just chatted about catheters and other stuff and I know it really helped him. I also made brochures to try and reach more people who seem to get their first catheter in the ER and are discharged with no information, which is so unfair.
As you can see from the length of this, I like talking. You can reach out to me if you wanna talk or have questions. In the meantime hang in there.

You were very lucky as it sounds like your urologist and nurses would take calls AND ANSWER QUESTIONS. I HAD TO SEND A TYPED MESSAGES AND WAIT FOR THEIR WRITTEN RESPONSE. AS YOU KNOW THE WRITTEN WORD CAN BE MISINTERPRETED AND YOU WOULD GET AN ANSWER TO A QUESTION YOU NEVER ASKED. AND THEN YOU HAD TO START ALL OVER AGAIN. OF COURSE, IT WAS a 48 hour turn around each time. I am from Akron Ohio so you should be able to figure out which hospital. I am very impressed by the information you were able to get as I got nothing from my hospital. I was never shown or told about cleaning the Foley catheter. I found that strange considering how much attention the nurse took as she said she wanted to teach me how to use the self-catheter. I felt if she needed that good a look she must have thought me an idiot. Catheterizing for a man is not that tough , we dont have to many places to put it and it doesn't try to go the wrong way and get lost.

    • @maletenance
      @maletenance  Год назад

I was fortunate that is for sure with my nurses. I never got the urologist but I think that's normal..at least in my case. Also, they didn't provide that much info. They actually never told me about cleaning or cleaning just inside where your penis and the catheter meet. I had to figure that out on my own after it felt like sandpaper in there. OMG just thinking about it makes me cringe.
I'm sorry that it's been rough with limited access to the medical team when you have concerns.
Here's the thing I've learned since I started the channel......the doctors/nurse do their best but most times you're just a number. I think that's why the channel has done so well.
Sometimes they take their time putting it in so it does not cause more trauma to the inside of the urethra or further damage to whatever might be blocking your pee hole inside. This can lead to serious complications. The first time I had a catheter was in the ER and it took 7 tries.....they kept poking and prodding and it would not go in. The on-call urologist finally got it in but that was traumatic. So maybe she wasn't just peeping your privates. Just something to think about.
Let me know if you have any questions that I did not cover in the videos. I've spoken to a lot of guys and it seems to have helped.
      Hang in there. Tony

Hey Steven, I am so @#$% sorry you have to deal with the archaic torture device. I'm actually in the final stages of getting my patent for an improved catheter that will reduce the pain. Lemonade out lemons.
As for how far - it's not so much pulling the catheter out as pushing your penis back to clean where it just was and it's not much. Just enough to clean the excess fluid that may have built up just inside before it gets all sandpapery. Someone else said to me in the comments it gets like a cat's tongue. That was a bit much but kind describes it. Make sure your hands are super clean too.
Can I ask you what is your diagnosis that got you to catheter use? Also if you don't mind how old are you. If you prefer anonymity you can always email me at Tony.alcindor@Maletenance.com I'm just curious and the stats help in my advocacy for mens health.

Great and super helpful videos. Maybe you could do a video about the Top 5-10 things to demand before and after you are catheterized in urologist office, hospital , but especially ER which from comments can and is often a total uncalled for painful, dangerous(does damage to urethra) and traumatic. I suggest this because many comments reflect that unless you know what to ask and demand you are often left to your own devices and are harmed by incompetence or expedience taking priority over quality care. Thank
Sorry I just saw all your tips for getting a catheter put in such as analgesic cream, hygiene, night bag etc. Great.

Hi Patrick, Thanks for the nice comment....means a lot.
Yeah you hit the nail on the head.....everyone whose gone to the ER has had almost the same experience. I wonder now that I am on the other side of things if they (nurses/doctors) were more concerned with my situation getting worse, that they had no time for niceties/explanations. I mean my bladder was about to explode which would have opened up a whole other can of worms.
Now this still does not excuse the lack of information provided for living with the dang thing. I dunno if there's a way to escape the ordeal without some trauma but I'm trying to spread the word. I made some pamphlets that could be given out upon discharge. It's not medical advice so it's not a conflict. Lemmie know if I can send you some to give to the ER people or to your urologist.

It's only an incremental design change to a traditional indwelling catheter using pre-existing engineering from another manufacturing category. I made a video about showering with a catheter. Keep in mind as some people have pointed out you can get an infection the way I did it, however for me that did not happen. I would suggest, however, that you are extra, extra diligent with your hygiene as it is easier to get an infection. Wash your hands, and try not to touch the tip or opening which will lower the probability of infection.
That said I still got 2 infections over my three-plus months with one. My body was just not happy with this foreign object in it and to be honest, maybe I was not as diligent as I should have been at the beginning.

    • @maletenance
      @maletenance  7 месяцев назад +1

@madmaxusa1 I thought I covered it. Anyway, here's what you gotta do for the sandpaper, nail file, cat tongue build-up.....those are all the different ways I've heard it described. When cleaning , you have to push your penis back a little along the catheter and clean that part of the catheter that you don't see so you won't get the secretion buildup. It's usually just on the inside of the tip that gets the build up and not all the way up but it can be painful if not cleaned regularly. I also used basic soap (Dove liquid soap with no fragrance) and water. Nothing with alcohol as it will sting, especially if you already have the tiny abrasions caused by the build-up. It will subside once you are diligent with this. Hope that helps. Cheers, Tony

I asked if any of them had ever had a urinary catheter and from behind their masks they all shook their heads no, some with fear in their eyes. No Lie! No one will ever know what it's like unless they've been through it.
Anyhow, I hope the videos helped...even just a little bit.
Cheers, and wishing you and your loved ones great health. Tony

My first catheter at the emergency room was inserted by someone one being instructed for her first time and it was terrible, even the ETM driver that drove me to another hospital told the nurses he had not so much blood in the drainage bag before and he has been on job 8 years.they did answer him.If I ever need one again I will make sure they are experienced.

Yeah, that crusty stuff is dried out blood cells (in my case), the mucus from the lining of your urethra, maybe a bit of semen, a little leaked urine....lots of stuff. And I really hate that in and out motion with every move of your leg, that stupid tube gets to be like a rat-tail file working on you!

The rat-tail file is exactly what it feels like. It's the %$^#ing worst!!! The in-and-out motion with every move killed me.
I thought to myself one day when I was reduced to taking painful baby steps to get to the pharmacy, there has to be a better way. So I invented a new and improved catheter that reduces the pain. After much trial and error and R & D, I am almost at the finish line of receiving the final patent.
I did the videos to help and support those living with a catheter and soon, the new catheter will help those maintain mobility with reduced pain allowing them to continue with activities of daily living.
I made lemonade out of lemons. I just wish I could get one to the millions that have to use a catheter to pee today.....soon though.
Quick question - what was the diagnosis that led to catheter use and how old are you? It'll help with my advocacy for men's health. You can always email me privately if you prefer.
Cheers mate and hang in there.

@@maletenance My situation from 'post op anesthesia problem', seems urethra 'locked up' after abdominal surgery, bladder 100% full, could only pass a few tablespoons of urine. Nurse not trained well, failed to use numbing gel into urethra, massive pain on insertion, anchor point for tubes too far down leg, every movement aggravates balloon end against bladder, lots of blood all the time, didn't give me the 'day bag' out of the kit

@@silaslongshot941 I can relate so much to what you say. For me, it took seven tries before they called the on-call urologist to get the catheter in. I was in hell! I feel bad for you because you weren't even in the hospital for an incontinence issue. I'm sorry about that.
Any which way you slice it, having a catheter sucks, but, since it's the only current way to void urine from the bladder, it is what it is. That's why I made the videos and I hope they continue to help you navigate everything.
If you ever wanna talk, which I've done a ton of times with people from here who left comments, email me.
      Hang in there.

It sure is. Some people don't mind it, but most of us would rather never have to deal with it again.
