The best option should be a factory setting of being able to do that very thing. As the vehicle owner, I think it should be up to them to decide how they want the vehicle to perform. I know, we apparently aren't worthy of doing that in the opinion of the powers to be but should.

Naturally, the overreaching government and authoritarian EPA are to blame - the EPA offers incentives to automakers on their fuel economy targets if vehicles are equipped with auto start-stop, but only if the customer can't disable it. (You can also thank the FEDGOV for intrusively noisy pedestrian-alert speakers ruining the silence of electric cars.) The claimed fuel economy savings of auto start-stop is about 4-5 MPG, but it's probably much less, and the wear and tear is far greater because of the loss of oil pressure during off-cycles prior to restart, and the amount of fuel used when starting the engine is greater than when running the engine. The ideal choice would be a device that can connect to the OBD-II port that automatically issues a CAN signal to shut off auto start/stop after about 30 seconds of the vehicle running, and ideally with a pass-through that allows another OBD-II device to connect after it. Also, complain to your congressperson and tell them you will VOTE THEM OUT for shortening the life and hampering your enjoyment of your vehicle unless they do something to rein in the EPA. Then actually FOLLOW THROUGH - most incumbent politicians have a history of corruption that helps keep them there.

@@Acoustic_Theory If this is being done because the EPA is offering incentives, that tells me it's not a regulatory requirement. It's a financial incentive to the manufacturer. That's a simple fix. Simply refuse to buy them. That will outweigh the government overreach, quick, fast, and in a hurry.

I own a 2020 Ford Ranger. To disable the Auto Start Stop function all I need to do is plug a small LED night light (110 volt) into the 110-volt outlet on the rear of the center console. Note that the Auto Start Stop function is not enabled IF an electrical accessory is turned on or plugged in. This is mentioned on page 145 in 2020 Ford Ranger Owner's Manual. This should work for other Ford SUV and pickup trucks as well. This guy is trying to make money like the salespersons promoting cookware on TV. He always praises all products from different companies despites of what. What the hell?

Good presentation, and I'm glad you didn't promote some of the bad solutions that are common on the internet. I suggest everyone who wants to defeat the system use one of the products you showed, which will keep all the other systems working as designed. Messing with modern vehicles electronics is a good way to screw up multiple systems. They are much too complex for the average owner to mess with. Yes, those solutions are expensive for what they are, but all the other cheap fixes are no where near as good.

Surely you still need the engine running for aircon to turn the compressor? Here in Europe the manufacturers love these Start-Stop devices - I always disable it on my friend's Land Rover - we have an extra issue. We have a lot of turbo diesels and if you want a turbo to live a long time you should let it idle for 30 seconds at start-up and before shutting off the engine (called simmering) to ensure cooler oil reaches the turbo bearings. Stop-Starts don't always alklow this leading to premature turbo failure.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  5 лет назад +1

We call that coking the turbo here. The oil cokes up, or cooks, in the turbo from the heat. Same issue on the Eco-boost gas engines. The air conditioning does not have a compressor running, but while turned off it cuts the fan in half and still pushes cooler air. In the summer, it sucks.

The one that you plug in behind the switch is just a latching toggle-switch type electronic gate that does the same thing as shorting the wires. If you’re comfortable with your abilities you can just put a toggle switch in its place. I’d probably put an appropriately sized fuse in line too just to be safe.

Thanks for the video!! START/STOP does NOT save gas (much)!! It takes MORE fuel to start a gasoline engine than to run it for a short while. Way back when I was a teen, it took 2 minutes of fuel to restart a car. With better efficiency engines, I'm sure that time has shortened, BUT it ain't ZERO! So, there is no benefit. The engine DOES turn off in the heat, so no AC in SE La is NOT a smart move. Also, about the "powers that be"- The car is YOURS. YOU bought it. You can do what you want with it, as long as it is legal. Are you responsible for making sure that what you do will not harm the car? Yes! So, do your homework first. Starting and restarting your car puts a lot of wear and tear on your engine. This causes the need for expensive engine repair. So much for the "powers that be". 😊

There is a wire you disconnect on the driver sie by the harness panel and you just pull that wire out and u dont have to worry about the start stop function. The guy that showed how to do this is on utube and his young son did it. The problem is that its been so long that I cant remember the link. You can search for the F150 Ford truck that explains how to do it. Its easy and simple and it doesnt interfere with anything nad I have been using it for a couple of years with no problems of any kind...look for it on utube its the father telling his boy to disconnect the wire. sorry i cant remember the link shoulldnt be too hard to find... and it doesnt cost anything..

Now my passenger can scroll music with out it locking.

@@jeffmayberry4064 That “charging sensor” acts like a trickle charger and sets parameters to when the battery gets charged by the alternator. Supposed to start charging when the battery level drops below xx and stops the charging when the battery level reaches yy. These were never in “older”vehicles as stated in this video. Older cars kept constantly charging the battery. This system is “supposed” to extend the battery life by not keeping the battery at constant charge of 100%. Instead it keeps it about 80% fully charged and may kick on when it drops below say 70%. I’ve heard this system has actually prevented batteries from functioning long term because they never get to be fully charged, like they used to in them older vehicles 🤔🤫??
That being said, I do believe it’s there to keep the power somewhat consistent so all those chips in your new vehicle don’t get any surges or drops to prevent hiccup in the software or hardware.. much like home computers usually are plugged into power surge protectors?? Just my two cents.

Finally it does no good for environment as replacing these parts has its ecological print, far exceeding the negligible fuel economy. (Except for certain exceptionnal situations like a big trafic jam or waiting in line at the car wash.)
I think it will be withdrawn some day, or at least disabling it become permanent until you put it on again.

be aware it will affect other systems. My '17 F150 XLT 2.7 V6 ... loses the trailer brake lights. sigh.
Higher end/features ... I know the tailgate release and a touch door handle on the Platinum ... those features are also lost.
It seems like Ford designed this to be a real bugger to debug. pony-up $100 for the plug-in deal ... or get to re-wiring.

Yeah you can turn it off every time you start your car but I shouldn't have to, it shouldn't be a standard feature, if you want to shell out extra money for that junk then fine, but don't force it upon everyone because someone at the engineering office thought it sounded cool.

Call me cheap but $100 is a bit expensive for this hardware. I went with the free option of unplugging the black connecter (bottom one of 3) on the box just under the steering wheel. The only downside of this is that it removes the power to the tow lights, but for a guy like me who might tow something once every 2 years, I can just plug it back in for the trip.

On my 2018 F150 I just unplugged the wire to my negative battery post. Open the hood and find the battery. On the negative battery post are two tiny wires one red and one purple with a single plug that plugs into a sealed electrical component that is mounted on the wires attaching to the negative battery post. If it takes more than a minute from the time you pull the hood release, your doing something wrong.

I noticed the voltage on your truck was first at 12.5 then 14.5. Was the 12.5 when the truck not running and th e14.5 a running voltage? You should do a video about FORD's BMS Battery Monitor System. Generally a battery would be fully charged state at 12.6 volts... 2.1 volts per cell, but with Fords BMS it prohibits the battery from accepting a ''full charge''. It's a weird concept to wrap your head around.
