Thank you for this sir. I love my 23 Palisade, but man I almost sold it cause the stop/start engine feature was driving me crazy, specially here in Vegas where in the summer is easily 110+ and the AC also turns off with this feature. Thank you.

I used Auto Stop Eliminator. You can keep the star stop feature off, even after you shut down the engine and turn it back on. It remembers your setting. Or you can turn it back on where the engine will do the annoying start stop feature as before. Very simple install. Good product.
Finally got it installed on my 2020 Explorer FWD Limited. Very difficult location, but good RUclips video showed the way. Loving it, especially in urban area with many traffic lights/stop signs. Works very well. Made the stop/start installed at the factory work the way it should have, off at startup, on if you want it to be.
Hi Rick. A hold it down shim works on a 2024 Honda Ridgeline !! As always, “at owners risk”. Those auto offs are very annoying indeed !! I suspect a shell game to ever so slightly increase CAFE rating. A guess. Just before I found this video, I had idea to try a shim placed next to the override button on my 2024 Honda Ridgeline to hold it down & it works !! An engineer pal has a Honda relative, an Acura and that idea does not work for his Acura. He made a gizmo that puts a short voltage pulse out every time the motor is started mimicking the push of the override button. For my Ridgeline, I grabbed a clear plastic thin walled container out of the recycling bin, cut out several small rectangular bits and shimmed them in. Clear as to not be noticeable. Captain Obvious statement here: In a northern climate batteries are greatly weakened just when they need to put out massive current to start engine when -10 degrees, -15, -20, sometimes worse. Brutal conditions to start a car after setting out all day during work, or whatever. We find with modern cars having computer memories and Auto Unlock sensors always monitoring when the key fob is close enough, those tiny around the clock parasitic current drains force us to place a trickle charger on our short trip in town vehicles about every 3 weeks, despite being parked in an insulated garage that seldom gets colder than +30 degrees. Old bomber 1998 Chev truck can set basically all winter unused in same garage and battery isn’t nearly as much run down as newer vehicles with obviously significant, yet tiny, parasitic current draws around the clock. It’s more the around the clock gig than the microamps draw. So, I severely frown on frequent engine restarts during short in town trips in coldest days with seat heater on and love my first ever most excellent steering wheel heat on, blower fan also on higher. Auto stop is a miserable idea, especially in winter !! A shell game.

On my F150, it was very smooth. The only thing that bothered me about stop/start was, it would activate before the truck was fully warmed up. Bypassed with a homemade (4 pin trailer plug and 2 resisters) trailer dongle. Ran this way for 8 years now.

For mechanics who need to test the engine it must be running. An indicator for maintenance is an open hood. So there is a sensor. On a 2015 Qashqai i bend the sensor 90 degrees so that the car thinks the hood is open and engine keeps running.

Have a 2020 Santa Fe, purchased new. That button seems to be programmable. Mine is disabled now-doesn’t matter if button is depressed or not, light on or not, engine still runs when car is stopped at a light. I have no idea how I disabled it, but it wasn’t physically or an add-on. I remember pushing the button multiple times with the engine on. It was several weeks before I noticed the engine stayed on. No issues so far, and that has been about 3 years ago.
A scanner might show a code that indicates why stop/start is not working. The computers check many parameters before commanding a stop/start cycle. It could be something like a detection of weak battery, or a missing signal from a sensor. A good outcome, but it might start working sometime (like after battery replacement.) Good luck, hope the repulsive feature stays disabled.
Well cause then you would have to spend months of break down time and thousands of dollars on new parts. Probably for the same reason you go to a dealer with the idea of the exact car you want and they "can't find it" on the lot and try to sell you something else. Anything associated with cars just can't be flat out honest. It's all got to be a trick.
I'm having this exact same thing happening on my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica driving me crazy I turn it off and on all day didn't start until I got a new auxiliary battery. But I'll try it to keep light on all day.

This feature is not reflected in the stated EPA figures for the vehicles. If you were in the city and stopped for a longer time it might make a difference of 10 percent according to some private test. That said, it is annoying and very hard on the vehicle to keep doing this. I can not imagine shutting down the air conditioner for a couple of minutes waiting for a light to change.
Maybe 10% for a car that spends half the time in a drive-thru queue. EPA estimates are always wild guesses or baldface lies, but the expense to purchase and repair a vehicle with stuff like special A/C evaporator (they can "store the cold" to use for a short shutdown - blower fan keeps running) could never be reasonable.

I have the same manual override for the start/stop feature in my Acura RDX. Every time I start the RDX, I manually push the disable button. It has become an automatic routine like buckling my seatbelt. I see no need to modify the car to permanently disable this annoying feature. I don’t want to give the manufacturer any to void my warranty.

I, too, hate the auto-shutoff feature. However, I'm driving a 2024 Subaru Impreza. In this car, they've removed the physical buttons. So, the auto-shutoff is on a touch screen. It's supposed to be designed so that you can choose to disable auto-shutoff. However, when I try to do that, the car never remembers that I've chosen to disable it. So, I'm in the habit of having to push that button, every time I start the car. It's a real annoyance. I'm convinced that the manufacturers weren't, at all, concerned about fuel savings, when they implemented this feature. I think it's just another way for you to pay them more money to repair/replace parts, that will wear out sooner, due to the car starting more often.
0:02 I get in push the button to turn on, put on seat belt, release the brake, set the ac , tune the radio, might adjust the seat, one more button push to me is no big deal. Once you get the routine it's nothing. Plus no disturbance to how the car and its computers operate.

But my car doesn’t have a button to disable stop-start. I was able to buy a device that installs at the battery to disable stop-start. I have had no problems with it.
I’ve had my palisade for 5 and 1 month. The first day I had it I figured out the same thing. All I did was jam a tooth pick in and push the button down. It’s been that way ever since. I hated that option.
On my Buick I pop the hood before I start the car and then close it after I start it and it disables the feature for that drive. It's annoying but it works.

Hi Ron. I don't know why you would want to do that. First: Hold your button down like I did in the video to test if this works on your vehicle. If it does, then, I would simply wedge the correct thickness of something to hold it in place. Rick
@rickstid-bits I was just joking. I don't even have a newer model car with stop/start. I do believe that features like that are only to appear to be green.

I had to use rentals for a few weeks this year; in every rental, this damn feature is there; I and the wife found it damn annoying. Luckily, my vehicles are older and don't have this dang thing. This should be an option to disable auto-stop/start in the setup screen. From my understanding, the computer keeps a tally of how many starts the starter has performed, and at a set number it throws up some sort of error message that requires the starter to be replaced. And to rese it, requires someone at the dealer to clear the flag. I'm sure that the feature causes wear and tear on the starter, the battery, the alternator, the engine itself because there's no lubricant flowing, and the transmission as there seems to be a lurch at times as it starts and engages at the same time when say leaving from a stopped state. I guess in the minds of whomever came up with it, it might save a gallon of fuel every month or year; but it also guarantees that extra parts and maintenance needs to be performed on the vehicle as well. Well, this is one way to guarantee that some parts are replaced periodically..
@@rickstid-bits It's a touch button on the display panel of a 2024 Subaru so the button can't be jammed down. There are other more complicated solutions though (the boxes mentioned in the video).
I honestly can't believe hyundai doesnt do an over the air update to their settings to allow you to turn this off by default. With all the attention to detail they put into the car itself and how usable the software is i really dont get it. Will try this on my 2023 and let you know!
That feature is to reduce emissions to meet EPA standards. The slight reduction in fuel consumption is not the primary reason for its existence on a vehicle.
Doesn’t everyone see the effects of climate change? Having an engine stop to reduce emissions seems like a pretty painless way to help deal with problems we caused.
@@tmeinc With all due respect, can not you see the effects of a shorter engine life and a shorter battery life and thus by far higher emissions in the process of making either all these new parts or to be a little bit more extreme a brand new car IS a pretty PAINFUL way to guarantee creating more problems? Well, if you are the party either working at one of the manufacturers of the cars or hold there stocks thus have a direct financial benefit that's a completely different story
With respect, I have no financial interest in vehicle manufacturing or maintenance. I do have an interest in our collective well being as I hope you do also. Durability of start/stop system components is easily designed for, measured and tested. As only one example, hybrid engines stop and start far more frequently than the start/stop systems. We all need to accept small potential inconveniences as the least we can and should do to lessen effects of climate change.
@@dongningprc Why wouldn’t you want some powerful part of your government protecting your environment, and that of people you care about? You are not a powerless citizen. You live in a democracy where, with effort, you can make your reasoned opinion heard.

There us no definitive gas savings published. Because if you live in a city and drive 30 minutes each day to work. You will likely stop at 10 traffic lights or more whereby your engine shuts off 10 times. Say I live in the country, drive the same car as you and I drive 30 minutes to work each day on the highway. I may have only 1 traffic light when I get to work. My car never shuts off. So how do you put that savings on a window sticker? You can't. But that is not why these systems were installed in cars in the first place. The US EPA is a government bureaucracy. When a political candidate runs for office and promises his voters the impossible. Then he has to deliver. So the EPA arbitrarily mandated that cars achieve a higher mpg then they currently achieve. But politicians know nothing about physics and it's limitations on gas mileage. So in the interest of proving the politicians right and the engineers wrong. The EPA now allows car manufacturers to merely guesstimate mpg on a particular model car if that car is installed with "auto stop start." Another words the car manufacturers have no real way to determine the actual improvement in mpg. But the EPA allows them to just make up a number. Then the politicians run for re-election and claim they forced the car makers to improve mpg even after we were all told it was impossible to do. Well it is still impossible only now we are all being lied to at the cost of; excessive engine wear & tear, higher capacity AGM Car batteries, injuries & deaths because some cars hesitate when quickly pulling into fast moving traffic etc. "Auto-stop-start" was never about saving gas. It was always about politicians saving face.

You forgot to mention the loss of oil pressure and the ensuing start with zero pressure. My Honda Passport has a button to turn it off and I push it soon after starting the engine.
And that's not the only thing on modern vehicles that causes issues, Direct Injection engines, the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders, bypassing the intake valves. As a result, carbon builds up on the back side of the valve and eventually causes problems. Car manufacturers know this and is why some are going to a hybrid fuel system with both port fuel injection and direct injection. I don't know what the cycle is between the two switching, but the port injection sprays fuel into the intake manifold, to minimize carbon build up on the valves. And then there are the other auto manufacturers that choose to stick with direct injection only engine, even though it is a well known issue of carbon build up.
I disconnected the separate battery of this "Start-Stop" system. Now "Jackie Chan" is constantly lit on my dashboard, but the car has stopped irritating me.
It’s not for fuel saving really. It’s for emissions. The part I don’t like is that oil pressure in the e engine goes to 0 when off and takes a couple of seconds. Any mechanic that knows anything that most mechanical wear in an engine happens when the engine starts.
Why can't every one that is annoyed with this issue just remember to push the button before they need to drive the car. It is so easy that even a cave man can do it.
Hi John. No problem and I appreciate you leaving a comment. I really do. But, apparently your car doesn't do this. Start the car - push the button. Go to the store, come out, push the button. Stop to get gas, push the button. Get in the car later on in the day, do it all again. Day, after day, after day, after day. For those of us (and you can see there are thousands of us) it is extremely annoying. If I can get rid of something that annoys me - life is even better. And in the case with my car, a simple piece of cardboard fixes it for me - forever. Rick
Doesn't work on GM Enclave as it is electronic, not mechanical. On my Ford, stop/start quit working on it's own. Seems Ford's version of crappiness worked out to my benefit for once.😁

I have a 2023 Jeep grand Cherokee , l don’t think it works with Jeep it’s not just a switch being on its a input of voltage to the control module the switch automatically defaults to on , I tried to hold it down when starting up when I first got the car , didn’t work ! You can remove a wire from the battery with no tools but you get a warning on your dash always, and the auto start eliminator Device is not made for my year car yet ! So we push the button each time ! Thanks Jeep for the $52,000 pain in the ass !
You can not like something just because, thats you right as a human. But SS (stop/Start) is not as bad as you think. It does not wear your battery, starter, engine, or electronics. Most SS vehicles stop the engine at or near TDC on cylinder 1. That means there is a fuel in the cylinder ready to be ignited. So when it starts the started has WHY less stress on it. If you've ever noticed it starts up very fast when using stop start versus starting the vehicle as normal. Also the battery, starter, and then entire system is designed around SS. They are NOT standard duty equipment. Oil pressure is held using valves, starter are built with different duty cycles in mind, the battery is has more CCA and had a larger AH rating, etc. your are pretty spot on with the .1 mpg saving. But its not about YOU. Its about everybody. If ever car saves that much fuel that is HUGE numbers is savings for fuel consumption and pollution. I personnly dont care about either of those myslef, but have gotten used to SS after learning about how it works. Its not obtrusive (unless your specific vehicle does not implement it well) and does not take anything away from fhe driving experiance. I am not a macanic by trade however my father was a engineer and a technician for 40+ years. That is a rare thing. He would take new vehicles drive them, completly disessemble them and out them back together and report on short comings to the manufacture. He did this from the 70s to the 2010s. I was lucky enough to go to work with him ALOT and learned for this as I would "help" and learn. I did not follow him, he retired from that and open his own repo biz which is where i started what I did after he passed away. I now own my own unrelated biz.
Hello. Thank you for adding that information. I appreciate your knowledge and take on this. I honestly do. For me: I tried to get used to it but still found it simply annoying. And if I can easily get rid of something that annoys me (especially daily) I will, and I did. As far as the mpg and emissions topic goes: I don't drive a truck that gets 15-19 mpg or a Cadillac Escalade that gets 14-18 mpg. My Palisade gets 24-26 mpg, so it already puts out A LOT less emissions per mile than a lot of other vehicles on the road. So as far as fuel economy and emissions go: I feel like I'm already doing my part. And I don't feel bad about not saving another 0.1 - 0.2 mpg. Thank you again for adding your information. Rick

I used Auto Stop Eliminator. You can keep the star stop feature off, even after you shut down the engine and turn it back on. It remembers your setting. Or you can turn it back on where the engine will do the annoying start stop feature as before. Very simple install. Good product.
Will void any warranty still in effect.

Its pathetic.. why not just allow user to turn it off permanently for good..
It should only be there as an option to be turned on when you want to use it, not ' off' when you don't.
I'm having this exact same thing happening on my 2017 Chrysler Pacifica driving me crazy I turn it off and on all day didn't start until I got a new auxiliary battery. But I'll try it to keep light on all day.

Hello. Which auto lock are you referring to? When you out the car in Drive? Or is it locking on its own after you get out of the car? Rick
You may be able to disable it with a good ODB scanner. Disabled it on my 2009 Lexus RX350.. Have to redo if you disconnect the battery, but it’s easy

I’m try this on my wife’s Toyota ❤

Let me know when you can permanently disable the Seat Belt warning,
I love it ❤

But my car doesn’t have a button to disable stop-start. I was able to buy a device that installs at the battery to disable stop-start. I have had no problems with it.
I’ve had my palisade for 5 and 1 month. The first day I had it I figured out the same thing. All I did was jam a tooth pick in and push the button down. It’s been that way ever since. I hated that option.

Just add pushing the button to your start up routine. Push start, push the auto stop button, done.
I don't have to. A piece of cardboard does it for me.
What if you glue it? Think the glue might keep the stop/start disabled?
Hi Ron. I don't know why you would want to do that. First: Hold your button down like I did in the video to test if this works on your vehicle. If it does, then, I would simply wedge the correct thickness of something to hold it in place. Rick

What make and model car did it work on? Rick.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will this work on a Highlander 2019
Hi Elizabeth, I don't know. Please try it and let me know either way. Rick

That feature is to reduce emissions to meet EPA standards. The slight reduction in fuel consumption is not the primary reason for its existence on a vehicle.
EPA should possible be reduced as an emission by DOGE

Does it cause a parasitic draw?

Great discovery but it didnt work on the Harrier. Although the button stays down, once the engine is shut off, it still goes back to the default
Hi Kathleen, I'm sorry it didn't work in your Toyota. Thanks for letting me know.

I wonder if that button can be popped out ,super glued and the button put back in
Sadly does NOT work on a 2016 S213 Mercedes E-class. With the button in the right state, shutting down and re-starting the car resets to the operating state 😢
Hi Andy. I'm sorry it doesn't. Thank you for letting me know.

You forgot to mention the loss of oil pressure and the ensuing start with zero pressure. My Honda Passport has a button to turn it off and I push it soon after starting the engine.
Does not work on my 2021 Honda passport.
Thank you for letting me know. Rick
I give you credit for ingenuity but why not just push the button and get on with life. It will become muscle memory in no time.
Building in a feature to cause early failures is engineering to shorten the life span on purpose.
6:00 for the hack.. you’re welcome.
There is an after market part for about $90.00. Easy install!!!!! Works great and no issues.
Warranty work can tell if this has been added and they will void work. Ask me how I know 😫
It will void your warranty.
Solution, just remove the device before taking it to the dealer for warranty work ✅
I disconnected the separate battery of this "Start-Stop" system. Now "Jackie Chan" is constantly lit on my dashboard, but the car has stopped irritating me.
This trick does not work for Subaru Forester
Hello. I'm sorry it doesn't work in your car. Thanks for letting me know. Rick
Video could have been 30 seconds
It’s not for fuel saving really. It’s for emissions. The part I don’t like is that oil pressure in the e engine goes to 0 when off and takes a couple of seconds. Any mechanic that knows anything that most mechanical wear in an engine happens when the engine starts.
Its wrecking the starter ring gear.
Seems like a jumper wire behind the console would do the trick (short the switch)
Rick
It is stupid that we need to resort to Jerry-rigging or aftermarket.
Auto stop start. The ASS feature.
My wife’s 2017 Buick Envision Essence does not have a button to disable that annoying feature. 😡
On Chrysler vehicles just unplug gizmo on battery cable end on battery.
Doesn't work on GM Enclave as it is electronic, not mechanical. On my Ford, stop/start quit working on it's own. Seems Ford's version of crappiness worked out to my benefit for once.😁
Hi David. Thank you for letting me know.

Put it in sport mode and it won't shut off either
The car literally feels as though it’s stalling at a stop light 😆.
Hi Nikki. Did you try this fix? Rick
Doesn't work on anything earlier. I have a 2015 vehicle So I do it the easy way. Before coming to a stop, shift it to neutral. Saves my transmission Still the same battery from 10 years ago
Heavy duty battery and starter also start duties in computer replace after 250,000 cycles newer cars it’s a momentary switch so this doesn’t work.
Good idea but could you go little futher and super glue that in that position instead of having the card sticking on the side? I am sure when it comes to resale it, that person probable thank you for it. Nobody like that stuupid features. I got one on my Kia Sealtos and I hated it too and super glue it in the "Off" position. Thank you
When he was finished you couldn’t even see card. What are you smoking
Hi Mark. I'm sorry it doesn't work on your Jeep. Rick
I agree with you 100%, what a STUPID idea...
Supposedly this is an emissions thing. Watch the Car Care Nut's take on this.
Rick
...or your startup routine can be 'poke the autostart button' after the engine is running.
I don't have to. A piece of cardboard does it for me.
i used a toothpick and just broke it off
Hi Daisy. Sounds good.
