MCR's debut album remains, to this day, my favorite album of all time. I actually rank their albums best to worst in the order that they came out. The pure, raw emotion and angst in that album is unlike anything else they released after that. Perfect album front to back.
Interesting facts about that mcr record, Geoff from Thursday helped produce it and the video was based on a Japanese horror movie called audition. When I went to their reunion show in nyc they whipped out this is the best day ever and vampires will never hurt you, crowd went nuts. It’s not their best record but it’ll always have a special place in my heart
Dillinger was fucking wild back in the day. They definitely popularized the "swing guitars around like weapons" thing. They especially loved small venues. I once saw them at the First Unitarian Church in Philly, and the second guitarist (not Ben) jumped off the stage, plowed through the crowd, jumped up on a merch table in the back, and started thrashing around at people who thought they were safe in the back. I've seen them a bunch of times over the years with different lineups and they're never not good.
I liked MFKR. Half of the songs are really good, some are just ok. The Slipknot song (Similar to sic I think), Do Nothing/ Bitchslap, Gently. You can hear how some of it became later tracks.
Bullets is my favorite MCR album and one of my favorite albums of all time. Had their most relatable and emotional lyrics, and probably most interesting songs musically. The band kinda abandoned the album outside of one or two songs once they got to the Black Parade tour, but they played half the album when I saw them on their recent reunion tour and I died happy. Also the music video is just taken from a Japanese horror movie. It was very typical of early 2000s emo bands to copy movies for their music videos
BMTH's CYB was a gift to the MySpacecore era. After that came some very good albums from other bands that contributed to give Deathcore what it needed. Dead My Arms by Carnifex is what came to my mind first, 100% recommended.
Yes, Dave Grohl contributed to the main riff for Scentless Apprentice. He also wrote and sang an entire song, which is actually quite good, called Marigold. It appeared as a B-Side on the Heart Shaped Box single.
Idk, I think Botch did the mathcore thing a lot better. Also, Norma Jean used to do the swinging the guitars around thing. They actually have a pretty interesting history starting out as like a nu metal Deftones-inspired band to now having no original members… you should do a video on them
I think MCRs bullet album is under-rated imo and being from down the road basically from where bmth come from i loved there ep "this is what the edge of your seat is made for" ,still bang it on every now and then for nostalgia sake. I remember everyone iny friendship group and the places we went for metal nights, freaking loved it and count your blessings was even more loved at the time
In the late 90s/early 2000's the Chicago Hardcore message board was super active and we were pushing Fall Out Boy hard. Pete had a lot of support from the scene.
So for the MCR question, I know Frank, the guitarist has known his wife since he was a teenager. So that's a likely candidate. There's also Mikey, the bassist who's girlfriend from around then would promote the band. Or it could be their first drummer, Otter. Real name Matt. Who I know very little of, and neither does anyone else because he wasn't in the band very long.
I saw Tool in like 1996. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen to this day. The video for Sober was also a real mind fuck. That's S tier for sure. For a debut album, it doesn't sound rough or unfinished.
Dillinger playing in smaller clubs really was nuts. Even though they played here in the Boston area a lot, I missed out on a lot of those shows because tickets would sell out instantly, which was frustrating because I live so close to a lot of the venues they played at. But I'm glad I got to experience the few shows I did, because I don't think there will ever be a band like them ever again.
I used to see them at churches and banquet halls back in the day. Very few shows back then were at ticketed venues. It was all DIY stuff, renting out spaces wherever you could or in some shitty basement.
Yes to Calculating Infinity! An S tier record, and, yet, they were just getting warmed up. Their shows were unhinged and incredible, but their tv performances (Conan and Golden Gods) were incredible, too.
What a banger to start off this list! MCR’s first album is tied for my favorite with Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge! I’m just happy it’s being mentioned anywhere and Drowning Lessons off that album is a masterpiece! 🔥🙏 Guess I have bad taste in music 🙂↔️
When Foo Fighters first came out I bought the album immediately as I love the music. While all of my friends balked and said this is a one off. Dave Grohl is just riding the Nirvana train. I said just you wait this guy is a phenomenal musician and songwriter..and FF are going to be just as big as Nirvana. 30 years later and I love being able to say I told you so to everyone of them.
I really like Tool but agree. Their first album was great and had distinct, fantastic songs. The other later Tool albums feel like the kind of thing you listen to all the way through which understandably not every listener is into
I love MCRs first album, some of the best riffs and lyrics they had. It's like their Kerplunk or Dude Ranch of Post Hardcore and it was the prequel to the story of Three Cheers. It's just got that raw punk energy with no corporate meddling
I'm surprised you've never talked about Refused "The shape of punk to come..." or maybe you have and I somehow missed it? That album really did predict a lot of trends that happened in music in the years following its release. If you have a video discussing refused- point me at it! Thanks!
It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside when Finn talks about Calculating Infinity the exact way I talk about it to people that don't give a shit about metal or hardcore.
Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape always reminds me of Limp Bizkit - Significant Other. Both blueish album covers, both are the bands’ second releases, and both are considered the best album among fans. But in both cases, I like the debut album better
Hey Finn! Here some thoughts and facts on the foo fighters stuff: 1. I think Dave grohl came up with the riff for scentless apprentice, I’m unsure if it was heart shaped box. 2. The debut album was actually the first full album I’ve ever listened to….somehow when I was 19…do NOT ask what I was listening to before then (even if it was partially big hits from the FF’s). Anyways, the debut album is still pretty good. However it does have a kind of inconsistent second half and I’ve never liked Big me. Still good, but ur right the color and the shape is their best. 3. My favorite foo fighters song is Stacked Actors :D 4. Kurt cobain actually heard Alone+Easy Target and Exhausted and he liked them but wanted to change the lyrics and maybe something else
As someone has mentioned, Marigold (originally Color Pictures of a Marigold) was the B side to Heart Shaped Box, but Dave did also write the song Friend of a Friend in 1990 (and recorded in secret the same year), and was about his first impressions of Kurt and Krist, though it wasnt realeased as a Nirvana song. He wrote it in Kurt's apartment with an acoustic owned by Kurt and the song was released in '92 on the Pocketwatch Ep under the pseudonym 'Late!' My favorite Foos album is No 3, There is Nothing Left to lose, but those first 3 albums are all classics, they've never topped them, but they are a brilliant live band and for all intents and purposes are still.my favorite band, Daves sucha sweetheart and the fact he recorded (nearly) all of the first album on his own still amazes me and just shows what a talent he is, even if you don't like the Foos.
What happened to the "here's the thing" meme? 'The Science of Sleep' has some cool stop motion animation, and yes, the fact Death Cab for Cutie are used in the trailer is highly indicative of the content of the film.
I apologize if I missed it, but if you ranked New Found Glory's debut, would you do the self-titled one or "Nothing Gold Can Stay?" even though the latter was while they were technically called "A New Found Glory"? *puts nerd glasses down*
The amount of heated arguments that were had at parties when I was in high school over Calculating infinity. Never failed, all the hippies that played guitar for a year did nothing but try to discredit how good it was.
I heard a bunch about you from around RUclips and I knew you did colabs with other artists so I thought you were like one of the online Metal gurus. Not sure what I think now 😂 Seriously awesome you’re here just sharing fun Metal things with us
Weedeater debut is one of the middle of the road things, mainly because of the combination of so-so recording quality as well as the limitations inherent in the doom/stoner genre. However what sets this band apart is the vocalist actually sounds like a weedeater. The band in my opinion reached their creative peak with their album Jason, the Dragon
Shat reminds me of a band I saw at Freak’n Pizza in Columbus, Ohio around 1993 or so. All their songs were about poop and they had CRT monitors on stage showing scat porn. The music was surprisingly good.
Not sure if this is out of place but I think MGMT-Oracular Spectacular is possibly the best debit album of the 2000's. Calculating Infinity is one the best pieces of heavy music to ever be released. Definitely agree its the peak of that genre.
Thank goodness for you bringing up SHAT again 🎉 I haven't listened to them in almost 20 years! I still have 128kbps MP3s of Shat passed down through multiple computers since the early 2000s. In fact, I think Shat has a very good question for you, Finn: what the fuck do you think Christina Aguilera is doing right now?
I’ve been a DEP fanboy their entire career, and it’s almost exclusively because of Calculating Infinity. The rest of their discography is good but CI is so fucking elite that even if CI was it, I’d be the same level of fandom. Also, Ben told me my chops were “fucking sick!” when I opened up for them in Japan 😂
To be fair to Slipknot, MFKR was a glorified demo that was self funded and released. By the time the actual self titled debut album came out they were a completely different band.
The only time I saw MCR was when they were opening for Reggie and the Full Effect while touring off Bullets and I wasn't super impressed; it took a lot of recommendations for Three Cheers before I gave it a chance and finally got into them. The biggest standout of their set from that show was how miserably sweaty Gerard looked in his leather jacket the entire time. On the Foo Fighters front, though I really like several songs off of Colour and a few later ones here and there, the only actual album I truly (still) enjoy and will actively listen to of theirs is their debut because it retained that raw grungy alt edge of the time; after Colour, they went more straight rock, which never appealed to me the same way--too "safe."
The only bands that I wouldn't argue if someone said their debut album was their best or favorite (that I can think of atm) are the Smashing Pumpkins (Gish), Suede (Suede), the Cranberries (EEiDisWCW) but those are what all between 1991-93 which is the new classic rock era. may as well talk about antique rock here.
Finn, kinda random, but u gonna make a take on charli's new album? I think it tops all of her previous work, and I have been super into her since Charli 2019.
My only thing is I’d argue that bullets is MCRs debut, but evening out with your girlfriend isn’t Fall Out Boy‘s debut album. They have only recently started to acknowledge it, and kind of treat it like an EP now. Just cos I’m a massive Fall Out Boy enjoyer and Take This To Your Grave would rank so much better I guess
MCR's debut album remains, to this day, my favorite album of all time. I actually rank their albums best to worst in the order that they came out. The pure, raw emotion and angst in that album is unlike anything else they released after that. Perfect album front to back.
We're playing the "here's the thing" clip simultaneously with Finn saying it now? I like it
"Let's start with... my Patreon."
Oh Finny you son of a bitch that ad transition was damn smooth 😂😂
Yup, he nailed it.

When I went to their reunion show in nyc they whipped out this is the best day ever and vampires will never hurt you, crowd went nuts. It’s not their best record but it’ll always have a special place in my heart
It's my personal favorite, even though TCFSR and TBP are objectively better, they really nailed this early 2000s Post Hardcore flavor
If people can find the Deftones cover girl and Jane Doe cover girl. We can find the MCR girl as well
I want to know the Jane Doe cover girl o.O
@@HeyHeyChey she is a model. She just recently know that jane doe cover looks similar to one of her shoot.
MCR video is based on a movie called “the audition”
Great ending
My introduction to MCR was seeing them open for The Bouncing Souls and The Causalities back in 2002. Awesome show.
I praise MCR on trying with their first album apparently they would sing into a toilet to get reverb 😮
The history of bands recording in bathrooms is pretty interesting.
Not a toilet, a bathroom.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!
Let it be forged into legend, toilet, not bathroom
No no actual toilet bowl, it's a classic producer technique for real deep reverb @@SleepBeforeYouThink
Marigold was a Dave Grohl song that ended up a Nirvana B-Side
Correct, and he came up with the riff for Scentless Apprentice but didn't write the whole song
Dillinger was fucking wild back in the day. They definitely popularized the "swing guitars around like weapons" thing. They especially loved small venues. Yes, Dave Grohl contributed to the main riff for Scentless Apprentice. He also wrote and sang an entire song, which is actually quite good, called Marigold. It appeared as a B-Side on the Heart Shaped Box single.
The story about Shat and Jeff Wood is interesting. Jeff got shot in the head and formed Shat after he went through rehabilitation.

MCR debut slaps
Their best record tbh
Absolutely agree with this
I enjoyed it too
@@TheCivildecay it’s really the only thing in their catalog that comes close to being “authentic” emo, IMO.
Their best and pretty much got worse with each album.

Definitely their best album
@@jarrettchristensen_musicWasting Light is their best album. But TCATS is definitely a close contender.

Totally agree, masterpiece of an album
Motorcycle Drive By is so good!

Other S-Tier albums would be imo - Appetite for Destruction, the RATM debut, Nails - Unsilent Death and finally, Altars of Madness
That's kinda my issue with the Foo Fighters, I can't even tell apart the difference between their 1995 stuff and their most recent stuff.
okay, we need Incubus "Fungus Amongus". Perfect example of an F tier debut that was followed by three S-tier albums.
here’s the THING !!
Ben from DEP was walking on people's heads at their shows right til they broke up. I've been stepped on by Ben at multiple Sydney DEP shows.
