Whew! As the “singer” of Freshman 15 I was absolutely terrified Finn would rip us to shreds. Came out relatively unscathed! But that photo… woof.
You singing "don't fucking like us" live, is one of the most legendary moments in pop punk history...LEGEND
City Lights and Freshman 15 tour in 2011ish!
Sup Davey
Freshman 15 bassist here! Stoked to have made the cut! Yes
Davey!! Alex from The Alumni Club here. Miss you bro, touring with you and F15 was such a great experience.

Pop-Punk was my gateway to Metal as a 14 yr old. The Offspring, Green Day and Blink 182 and more... I moved on to MOSTLY listen to different things but I will always had a soft spot for this type of music.
Great to discover these "Hidden Gems" of Pop-Punk - this is like a MetalJesusRocks video for Pop-Punk! 😁
Same that was definitely my favorite music for a few years and when sum 41 came out with chuck I started to like heavier stuff. Not that Chuck was metal really.. but it was a bit heavier than the other stuff I was listening too.
The fact that Cartel is mentioned on this list makes me so happy, mega underrated band
They made a new album and reuinted a year or 2 ago, along with the summer set, the academy is, yellowcard, and a bunch of the smaller sized but still great pop punk bands of the 2000s.
Boys Like Girls too, they just released a new album in October and did a song featuring 30H3, the ready set, the summer set, and state champs. Pretty cool almost like a rap cypher where they combine a bunch of bands.
They probably deserved their rating for their singer talking shit about early Panic out of sheer jealousy LOL
Chroma is such a solid album! I still keep the CD in my car 😅
I always say “Honestly” is the best pop punk song ever written.
Zebrahead, Rufio, Millencolin, Lagwagon, No Use For a Name, The Living End
I could listen to Finn talk about Pop Punk as much as most people love listening to him talk about Nu-Metal.
same
same, because pop punk has more than 2 good bands
Couldn't agree more
Same, I don't get how people could possibly be so into my metal
I actually dislike all the nu metal stuff he talks about. It’s called Punk Rock MBA and I’ll gaitkeep PRMBA all day!
Man, how insane was the Drive Thru Records lineup in the early 2000s? Home Grown, The Starting Line, New Found Glory, Allister were all great.
The Early November, Hidden In Plain View, Something Corporate, The Movielife, Midtown, Finch, Senses Fail, Houston Calls, Halifax, Rx Bandits, etc. Drive Thru rarely missed! So many pop-punk classics from that label alone!
I was a bonafide Drive Thru Records hoor. If a band was on that label, I at least gave them a shot if not had them in permanent rotation. Finch and Something Corporate are still two of my absolute favorite bands
@@jsandman21Finch is still to this day one of my all time favorites. Also Allister I think could have been way bigger.
@@spfadden082711 Finch and Allister as two of my favorites!
@@jsandman21 Also, little known Steel Train. Not really always pop punk, but included Jack Antonoff (Bleachers, Fun, Grammy winning producer)
outRAGEus drummer here. Thanks for the mention 😆😆🤘
Be careful with Relient K, they’ve got a song about going to the Sadie Hawkins dance in your khaki pants
There's nothin better
Mmhmm is still one of the better pop-punk albums from the 2000's.
Oh oh oh
Seems like a lot of people write them off for being christian but “mmhmm” and “TLDMARB3D” are perfect pop punk albums imo and it might be stupid but I appreciate the positivity and fun they brought to the genre. “High of 75” is a great song if anyone wants to look into it. Then later on they matured into a more alternative sound with “forget and not slow down” and “air for free” which are personally my favorite two albums by them. Idk if people have a hard time taking them seriously or what but I think you’ll be pleased if you check out any of the music I’ve mentioned. Their monthly listeners is way too low
@@Nik.No.K cus I'm sunny with a high of 75
When you're really into a c-tier band, it feels like you have a personal connection and it's your thing. Saying your favorite band is an s-tier band is like being a stan for Wal-Mart.
I found my old iPod Nano recently and it goes really far down the iceberg. Me Vs Hero, Chunk No Captain Chunk, etc. There was this band that only ever got popular in the Long Island bringer show scene called This Condition (yes they sound like Jack's Mannequin minus the piano) that I'm still sad never got more exposure. Their singer is a pretty successful songwriter in Nashville now.
Anytime someone brings up Unwritten Law, Mest or Home Grown, my grinch heart smiles.
Elva is one of the best all around albums ever. The “music in high places” album ( I may have gotten that name wrong) where they played it in acoustic was great.
I'd love to hear your take on Zebrahead sometime.
The Home Grown album with the closeup of a mouth on the cover was FANTASTIC fun.
Kings of pop
That album is incredible.
Yep, Kings of Pop, I listened to a few tracks off of it yesterday. Tomorrow, Give it Up, great album, awesome band.
We need a Finn McKenty deep dive into stuff like the late 90’s Christian music festival Tomfest, and how wild that era was.
This is my wheelhouse as a 39 year old who lived through all of the best years of pop-punk... I still spend countless hours searching out unknown pop-punk bands all the time:
Some more mid-tier bands not mentioned: The Academy Is, Hit the Lights, Count the Stars, Over It, The Matches, The Cab, Cute Is What We Aim For, Farewell, Every Avenue, Gob, Lucky Boys Confusion, The Maine, Marianas Trench, Matchbook Romance, Motion City Soundtrack, Punchline, Quietdrive, Set It Off, The Summer Set, Zebrahead, State Champs, Sugarcult, With Confidence, WSTR, Youth In Revolt, Bowling For Soup, Hands Like Houses, Hot Rod Circuit, Madina Lake, Mayday Parade, Rufio, Valencia, We The Kings
Some lower-tier but good pop-punk bands: Off By One, Crash Romeo, Amber Pacific, Armor For Sleep, Artist Vs. Poet, The Audition, Between You & Me, Broadside, Carousel Kings, Chin Up Kid, Danger Is My Middle Name, Crash Romeo, Don't Look Down, Faber Drive, Figureitout, FM Static, Friday Night Fever, Go Radio, Halifax, Hawk Nelson, Hey Monday, Hidden In Plain View, In Her Own Words, The International Drive, School Boy Humor, Last Night Saved My Life, Loveless, Milestones, Modern Maps, Never Heard Of It, Northstar, Novice, Red Car Wire, Sleep On It, Slick Shoes, Stand Atlantic, A Story Told, Take Cover, These Hearts, A Thorn For Every Heart, Too Close To Touch, Wakefield, We Are The In Crowd, The Years Gone By, You Vs. Yesterday, Yours Truly, Youth Fountain
More obscure pop-punk that is still awesome: 7 Minutes In Heaven, 15 Minutes Late, Ace Troubleshooter, All New Atmosphere, An American Skyline, As Night Falls, Aspire, Avion Roe, The Background, Barely Blind, Best Interest, Brighter Brightest, Calm Collected, Car Party, Dear Dakota, Digger, Ever We Fall, Eyes Catch Fire, False Image, Flashlight Brown, Forget Me In Vegas, The Great Valley, In Search of Symmetry, Jasper Drive, Kid Down, Late Night Habit, Late Night Reading, Lights Out Dancing, Ludo, Mugshot, My Aim Is True, Nuclear Saturday, Pathway To Providence, The Scenic, Shaded, Showoff, Snakefight, The Sophomore Year, Starting Over, Stellar Kart, Sunset Atlantic, The Victory Lap, The Wedding, Wester.
Yes, I just went down my itunes playlists basically, but I've been building it for almost 25 years. Left off a lot more too.
Youth in revolt is pop punk now?
Northstar rules
@@vld1998 Lots of pop-punk elements in their choruses. "Love is a Liars Game", "Alright" or "I'm Not Scared" are nice examples. Their cover of "Something in the Way You Move" also has lots of pop-punk stylings to me. They have some heavier elements more akin to post hardcore or bands like ADTR, but they definitely have a "poppier" side in many of their songs. Love the band though!
I saw Stellar Kart play at a coffee shop in Green Bay, WI and man was that magical
Not sure how popular they are but a newer band I've been enjoying lately is "As It Is"
Hell yeah, a Fenix TX shout out. I loved them!
Fuck Yeah! My little sister was really into them, so as I was going into way heavier genres, she was all about this sound. Goddamn amazing tunes.
Nobody talks about Belvedere anymore either.
Loved Fenix Tx. Ben is one of my favorites from them.
@@spfadden082711 Ben used to be the first song to play when going on my Myspace page. Damn I'm old 😂😭😂😭😂
@astralmass I saw belvedere about 2 months ago! Thier newer song "elephant march" absolutely slaps!
The guitar tone on that Cartel album is delicious
man i just wanna say that i have respect for all you older people talking about pop punk and having such a passion for it. im a 16 year old kid who found blink 182 a couple years ago on spotify and now i have become a full out pop punk and punk rock fan. i love how pop punk is coming back even through shit heads like mgk. but man it honestly is getting closer to what the 2000s pop punk sound used to be and the culture as well also quick thanks to finn mckenty for bringing me into the light of pop punk music without him i would never have found kennyhoopla, or better yet rancid.
As 30 year old it makes me super happy to hear the youth discovering this music ❤
Check out title fight bro. Start with the album “the last thing you forget” its their most pop punk album
Nvm u probably already know them I thought you said you got into it 2 months ago not 2 years lol
One of these days when you're older you gotta come to when we were young festival in Vegas. It's not the same as warped tour was but it's pure nostalgia for us.
I refer to bands like Cartel, Relient K, We the Kings, Cute Is What We Aim For, etc, as “Girlfriend Core.” While the dudes were listening to Job For A Cowboy or Terror their girlfriends were listening to All Time Low or The Summer Set 😂
Yeah. We also sang along to Relient K in the car with them, though.
@@RiggedandReady I sing that shit alone in the car fuck you mean lmfao
@@kingschlamiel good point bro haha
Authority Zero never gets any love. One of my favorites from that time period and still putting out good music
Rufio & Amber Pacific. My cousin burnt me a mixed cd in 05 & I remember being completely blown away at where they were taking the pop-punk sound. Underrated asl. Years before four year strong or Adtr too.
Rufio absolutely kicked ass
Pollen, Slick Shoes, Broken Cedar, Bodyjar, Melody Fall, Last Day Before Holiday, Ellegarden, For No One, F.O.D., Monoeyes, Hit The Lights, Can't Bear This Party, Reset, Radical Radical, Pop Disaster, Daylight, Better Luck Next Time, Dynamite Boy, Tonight Alive, Yours Truly
Loved goldfinger. Very underrated
My somewhat obscure pop punk band is Lucky Boys Confusion, also based out of Chicago, like the underground greats of the genre!
What therapy never managed to conclude was done here in the first 2 minutes. "I am not normal". So glad it's out of the system now. Lets celebrate with some Pop-Punk 😂
Relient K played at my highschool in the Poconos once back around 01 or 02. What a gig.
I miss tumblr era so bad. Nothing like it. I wish someone would make a movie or something
Finn please make a playlist. I’m ready to get into some obscure pop punk.
I wish more people talked about Hit the Lights. Top tier pop punk
Those ALL and big drill car songs hit just right.
Thank you for the brain learning, professor mckenty.
I had not heard of Me Vs Hero, Major League or ALL, thank you for that!
Here are some of my favorite honorable (mostly forgotten) mentions: Allister, Lucky Boys Confusion, Anberlin, Autopilot Off, Every Avenue, Twin Atlantic, Witterquick, Heartsink, June, Quietdrive, The Rocket Summer, Spitalfield, Stellar Kart, The Summer Set, We Shot the Moon 👌
Autopilot Off🖤🖤🖤 That’s a name I had forgotten about
Spitalfield mention! Love that band.
Northstar, hot rod circuit are two of my favorites. I may be stretching the pop punk term, though.
Dude autopilot off is so good! It’s sad they never took off
Saw Anberlin and I had to like
@@caesarorzell600 Right!?
Scott Russo is a great songwriter. I actually think his drinking and drug issues both helped (song writing) and hurt him. He also once dated Aimee Allen from The Interrupters who is an insanely hot punk rock star. I do remember hearing stories in the early to mid 2000's about him pissing off other bands he was on tour with.
Speaking of Sugar Ray, you should do a tier list on bands that totally changed their sound for commercial success. Goo Goo Dolls is another classic example.
I did a couple of those on my main channel!
First tape I ever bought (with my lawn mowing money) was MxPx Life in General. Still one of my favorite albums of all time.
I had a gf get me into Mest back in 2002. Their first two albums are great, especially “Wasting Time.” I saw them tour with UL and got a pic with them all after the show. Jeremiah was drunk and blatantly looking down my gf’s shirt.
Not very fun fact about Me Vs Hero - they had a hard time as their guitarist died falling over a railing and dropping 50ft inside a block of flats in Preston.
They did a reunion set at Slam Dunk festival a few years ago where they played the Days That Shape Our Lives album back to front, and it was outstanding.
Is Zebrahead pop punk because I love that band
If so.. definitely my favourite pop punk band.
Zebrahead was sick
Saw them live in 2019 and even their later stuff isn't bad at all.
River Pheonix changed their name to Fenix TX due to a cease and desist from River Pheonix's mom. River Pheonix died before Fenix TX was a band.
Yes.
When you paused for MEST’s drum rack I thought you were gonna talk about Tony’s tramp stamp 4:07
No love for classic Canadian pop punk like The Dough Boys, Gob, Chixdiggit and Boys Night Out?
I sure do! 'Crush' and 'Happy Accidents' by Doughboys are S-tier albums. Had a whole season in my life when all I listened to was canadian 90s alt-rock: Treble Charger, Our Lady Peace, Sloan etc.
I saw Cartel in the thumbnail and haven’t clicked on a video that fast in my life 😂
The best pop punk is from the '90s and there's barely a mention of it. MxPx, AFI, Bracket, Chixdiggit, Diesel Boy, Hagfish, Limp, MTX, Samiam, Welt...
Homegrown has been one of my favorite bands since the early 2000s, they’re f’n rad…
Check out the album “Kings of Pop”
A few other people have mentioned Zebrahead too, another banger of a band…they opened for 311 back in 00 or 01, they have a rap-rock element to their sound as well.
Relient K is the best pop punk band ever. Mmhmm and TLDMARB3D are both perfect and they’re not even my favorite albums by them. “High of 75” is literally the best song ever and the most fun song to play on drums
10 minutes in and enjoying this. However, comparing Alkaline Trio to Unwritten Law is inaccurate. Alk3 had several top 20 albums in the US and here in the UK they are about to play to 2000+ people a night in July. Far more successful than Unwritten Law.
Also, Relient K have 3 gold albums in the US. Far more successful than Cartel who sold maybe 400k of their first and that was pretty much it.
I remember buying the album "Guitarded" when it came out by the relatively unknown pop punk band Limp. They sure had some fun songs in this genre !
Anyone remember Fenix TX being the end credit music for the Nickelodeon movie “Clockstoppers”?
Unwritten law are definitely a vastly underrated band, had bangers
I started watching your videos a few months back and have been the featured stream comment more than once and now my youtube ads are exclusively temu and coors light. Thanks for outing me as an elder millenial.
New Found Glory is not at that top tier. I know people who grew up in that era and watched MTV that don't know anything about New Found Glory but knew every other band you listed and could sing those bands' songs from memory.
Dude, I'm sorry but peak warped tour was definitely without a doubt from like '03 to '06...
Matt from Set Your Goals sings in our band. He’s probably played with a majority of these bands. I think one of the big factors of why so many of these bands did well is the production. Pop punk is already catchy and combine that with solid production and it’s going to gain a following.
I saw Unwritten Law play the whole Black Album from start to finish, sick show
Was expecting to see American Hi-Fi, Allister and Spunge I here somewhere, but man there's some blasts from the past the lower we get on the ice berg, love this video
One of my favorite bands way down the iceberg would be Such Gold! 🤩
I watched the entire video and not a single mention of Midtown. Kinda surprised. Maybe i missed it?
“Oz Factor” by Unwritten Law is one of my favorite albums. Always go back to it.
I do not have twitter so I will never make it to an unpopular opinion video but here is my take: "c tier is the true a tier" is only used to try and hype up the mediocre band from the scene you grew up in
Should ALL be really that low down? Featured on Punk-O-Ramas, Them being a The Descendents continuation etc, I would put them in the same category as Unwritten Law, Lagwagon, Pennywise in terms of popularity and exposure...
Hell no, nobody knows who they are
Agreed! I know who they are.
Unwritten Law is one of my favorites. I'm definitely late to the game with them, but they're awesome.
Better Luck Next Time from LA????????? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I really need to get a better sleeping pattern. When I notice a new upload here I realize its like 7am my time lol. Good work, Finn.
IIRC, the estste of River Phoenix sent the band a cease and desist letter regarding the name. Nothing to do with it being in bad taste lol.
95% of this is just mall emo pop rock 😂😂😂 almost no pop punk mentioned in this entire video. Definitely by design tho, he wanted to irritate people like me so we'd comment and get the algorithm to take a hold of it.... 🤦
i would listen to freshman 15 EVERY SINGLE DAY
Growing up in San Diego in the late 90s....we all knew Unwritten Law. Finn is correct...they are awesome
Phoebe Kates is the greatest pop punk song from Feinix TX!
I often feel like Spraynard sounds so awesome they could've/sould've been bigger
That me vs hero song grabbed me so fast. Thanks for the recommendation!
You should do a video about egg punk and bands like snooper and Shrudd both really good bands
Big Drill Car was just a descendants/All copy
For me, the ultimate pop punk label was Drive-Thru Records.
Advice to my younger self: don't be the guy who plays Me Vs Hero at a party....
How about Amber Pacific? Great band.
I didn't hear anything about rufio. Did I miss it?
I have all these bands on my Spotify playlist. This is confirmation that my parents were right: I am a weirdo.
Homegrowns king of pop album is a masterpiece
I met Unwritten Law in a 7 Eleven parking lot around 2002. Knew they were band because of their van and we talked for a few minutes. I'm pretty sure I talked to the singer and he could have been chatting me up because I looked very ubergoth during that time, meaning I was wearing a corset.
It all sounds so much like American Pie xD
Omg I’m so glad you mentioned Me VS hero 😭😭😭
Love this list and 💯 agree with your logic on the iceberg! Stoked that you gave Unwritten Law a nod- they’re so slept on
New content idea for Finn: where are they now videos for Members of C tier and lower POP punk and nu metal bands.
Honestly all I could think of when he started talking about Boys Will be Boys was wondering what Walmart they all work at now
Chase from City Lights co-owns a Shopify agency
Bro… RELIANT K > Blink 182
no mention of Finch or Distorted Penguins...
Can't believe he didn't mention distorted penguins, this guy doesn't know his pop punk
Finch is more posthardcore, get out of here lmao
Finch definitely straddles the line of pop punk/post hardcore with their first album, idk why yall are acting like thats such a crazy take from OP
@@7stitchesThen SHTS came out. Wild left turn
@@datguy9408 yeah, not going to argue that, but I don't go as far down the genre subdivisions as most. If it's poppy and punky at all to me, I pretty much consider it pop punk, but just hard pop punk if it's a little harder. Like Sum41's Chuck album. It could almost be metal, but it's Sum41, so it's just hard pop punk to me.
Unless you've got access to mom's mini van, you ain't got room for a drum rack.
Home grown was and still is wildly under rated
Musically speaking, alot of the "sad boy" era bands had really great arrangements, multiple guitar layers and harmonies, and great vocal melodies most of the earlier bands lacked.
This episode was made for me. Thank you Finn.
Alright, this video was great. It's like hanging out with an old friend ranting about music. I feel like I'm on a road trip and my friend is going through my mp3 player judging me
MX Superfly was the Gamecube Motocross Game with Cadillac on the Soundtrack.
Unwritten Laws latest album is slept on. Underrated band in general
now THIS is the content im here for. pop punk hell yea. i cant wait to look into some of these bands.
appreciate you so much 🤘
So glad he mentioned City Lights!
What, no LiveJournal era? AOL IM era? Oh there they are Lol I saw Guttermouth with Less Than Jake, opening for the Descendents, in Pomona, 1997 or 98. Great show, til some jerkoff tried to rob the box office, and the cops showed up, shut the power down, nearly caused a riot. Descendents played on for another 10 minutes before they got yanked.
Also saw All, with the Cows and Rust, at the Galaxy Ballroom in Santa Ana, around about 96ish.
Most of the pop punk I've listened to was the "orgcore" stuff. Such as Off With Their Heads, Dear Landlord, The Dopamines... What I always say is that good pop punk has only one type of breakdown and it's a mental breakdown. Also I used to listen to Guttermouth a LOT when I was like 13. Probably the target age group.
MGK belongs at both the very tip and the very bottom because everyone knows him because he literally invented music and pop punk and the guitar and the Ford Model T. He also belongs at the bottom because his music is so much deeper than everyone else's. MGK bless MGK.
Cigar just changed my mind about poppy skate punk. Legacy of seven plies may convert you. It’s insane.
Rufio, Bodyjar, and No Use for a Name should have been mentioned. Awesome bands.
Also Hit the Lights, Cauterize, and SR-71 come to mind.
Also Bodyjar from Australia is underrated af, they're my hometown pop punk band and have seen them a few times, you'll know them from the THPS3 soundtrack.
