UNITRONIC MK8 GTI STAGE 1 & STAGE 1+ TUNE COMPARISON // MK8 GTI Dyno session

- Unitronic's release of their Stage 1 and Stage 1+ tunes for the MK8 GTI & R platform have created quite the buzz in the MK8 community recently, so we had to put it to them to the test ourselves and compare!
Unitronic's officially released numbers for the MK8 GTI are:
Stage 1 - 336HP/352TQ
Stage 1+ - 361HP/377TQ
Please remember that the officially released numbers are crank power figures and that our figures from the dyno here in Texas will differ from theirs.
This is a back to back dyno session with both versions of the software in the same conditions, and the same conditions as previous dyno runs! If you know anything about this car, you know it has just about everything you can do to a MK8 GTI done to it, so these runs are a good test of what you can get out of this car with what is currently available on the market!
We will be back soon with the same runs with the factory downpipe to compare against our Milltek HJS downpipe currently installed!
Here is a FULL list of every mod done to our MK8 GTI for you to checkout:

that number they advertise is for crank horsepower, and this was a wheel horsepower number! This car has an IC and every other bolt on possible!
What do you guys think about the 034 tune? I don’t have much experience with their software and was curious if you prefer uni over them or vise versa (about to pull the trigger on uni )
@@michaelrossi3275 We should be testing their software today, but I think for the price, the Unitronic software is a really solid route to go and you wont be disappointed - especially with Flex fuel around the corner!
@@BMPTuning That means your gti puts +- 400hp at the crank (calculated from 328-333hp wheel). Are you sure about this? Please clearify because 245hp stock on the dyno cannot be WHP. Thank you.
Thanks for the vid and continued support for the platform guys 👍🏼. You’re always my first stop shop.
Looking good so far! I’m going to hold off on tuning my 23 for a while and see what shakes out with these tunes. I’m just happy to see the support and parts rolling in. I just bought my SE three weeks ago and have already dropped $4k into mods. Mostly from y’all 😂
We definitely appreciate it
How much does stage 1 cost and 1+...and what's involved I just got my gti and thinking about it thanks
Niceee , I hope cobb releases access port for the mk8/8y platform need to see what sneekytuned & EQT can do with these🔥
Sadly, knowning Cobb, Id imagine this would be at least another year or more out.
Looking to buy a new MK8 The tuning potential looks promising I'm excited for the new gen
What engine and transmission mounts are you running on that mk8?
BFI stage 3!
Did y’all use the Unitronic intake system & intercooler with the tune or other brands ?
MST intake and IE intercooler!
Sorry about my ignorance but the ECU is blocked? Don’t you have your own custom map?
Just for my knowledge about the MK8 platform and challenges.
Thank you for your attention and keep up the good work!
It’s no longer “blocked.” People have been working on tunes. Across the water people have had them for a bit and the bigger names like Uni and APR are now here. (APR soon).
@@AntFragale thanks for the education mate, highly appreciated!
@@AntFragale mine is still unlocked, I’m begging uni and revo everyday
Seriously considering getting one these is it worth if so why. Are they better then the MK7.5?
I really like it, I think the advancements with interior changes are great. There are some infotainment glitches, but overall its much nicer than the previous gen while still retaining a lot of the greatest parts of what makes an MQB an MQB.
what exhaust is that i like the quad tip
This is the Milltek catback for the MK8 with the R rear made for us by them!
Unless I'm forgetting the numbers, it seems about the same output as the s1/s1+ tunes from the mk7/8v. Phew! **stops sweating**
Its not though
How does it make more whp then the crank hp they say it makes
Unitronics numbers were Stage 1 - 336HP/352TQ
Stage 1+ - 361HP/377TQ. Horsepower wise we were under these numbers, But torque wise we were well over for each tune. But the easiest explanation of why we made so much is that we have a full bolt on car, and Unitronics numbers were from a stock car.
How does that stage 3 clutch feel compared to the stock clutch?
Feels amazing, a bit stiffer but grab is nice and feel is great!
Just got stage 1 ecu tune on my mk8 and dont plan to do anything else but do you think I will need a tcu tune as well
With Stage 1 you should be fine, going 1+ or 2 absolutely!
@@BMPTuning Alright thank you i was going to do 1+ but 93 octane is not available in my area and i dont want to drive 10 miles for e85
Those numbers are WHP?
Yes!
What blow off valve is that?
Forge!
Is an IC needed for stage 1 or stage 1+? Or is only an intake sufficient?
Intercooler is recommended, but not required. Id say you are good to wait till Summer personally!
@@BMPTuning did you all also use the TCU tune? Is it required to run the stage 1 or 1+?
@@a.thompson1182 Our MK8 is old fashioned still, we row the gears ourselves.
Would recommend TCU for Stage 1+ and beyond though yes. (Unitronic is on sale now, good time to save!)
@@BMPTuning oh I also run a manual so was just wondering if it is still needed or if the TCU tune was only for the DSG version
@@a.thompson1182 Yep! only for the DSG versions so your'e good!
333/398 on 27 psi? 7.5 gtis making that on stage 2 at 28psi. I wonder if the new turbos can reach 30psi at sea level
Well it’s not 27psi to redline, it’s tapering as the rpm’s climb.
Yeah they might hit it for sure, but holding it will be the issue. Our elevation at the Dyno is around 500FT above sea level. Golf R turbo swaps might be a thing in the future, but its a lot more involved on this chassis than on MK7-7.5 unfortunately.
@@BMPTuning my city is 16.4 feet above sea level.
Can you open your moon roof with that roof rack?
nope :(
@@BMPTuning that's too bad, that color-matched box is pretty sweet.
I am dying to see some quarter mile and 0-60 stats on a stage 1 and stage 2 mk8!!!
Been waiting for this the longest . I want to see trap times for stock jb4 and stage 1/1+
We are gearing up for track testing once the track around us opens for test/tune!
2022 MK8 GTI that claims to be running a Unitronic Stage 2 beta file posted the following times on the Dragy leaderboard:
1/4 mile: 12.95 @ 114.3 mph
60-130mph: 12.21s
Mk8 CS
I have one with a stage 1 flash (VUDU software)
407.9 bhp
That is all…..
lucky euro spec owners...
@@BMPTuning serious this
Why don’t you put the continental turbo on from the mk8 CS/R? it’s been done over here and gains straight out of the bag without software
what spoiler extension is that
OEM golf R spoiler! www.bmptuning.com/products/mk8-golf-r-spoiler?gadid=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA7bucBhCeARIsAIOwr-8SXlcJPW70klpIHMsfflKDIeJ8gAYp9KW4TBObD8LRmsxj3OKaAk4aAmVxEALw_wcB
That exhaust 🤘🏻what is that?!?
Milltek highflow catted downpipe and milltek race catback!
The Milltek downpipe made less power than the stock dp!? Wow.
It is all good, but you still can not flash your car with UniConnect+ at home. Shame really.
Yes you can? I just purchased the UniConnect+ cable. Stage 1+ and the TCU Performance Software. Doing it all with my laptop in my garage.
@@unacceptableminority9387 Just spoke with Unitronic tech support. They said that I can not tune my ECU at home right now, and my TCU tune is not available yet. I gave them the BOX codes and revisions. :(
@@unacceptableminority9387 "Thank you for the message. Unfortunately, these vehicles are not supported by UniConnect+ Cables yet, although this feature should be available shortly, as we are in the final stages of development.
We do have Performance Software for your Ecu ID, although this Tcu software is not readily available for this ID.
Best Regards,
Nick"
Mk8 GTi? Released November 18th, 2022
I'm sitting with my active cable and Windows software. The only reason I didn't do it today was I was busy with work this afternoon.
From their website...
"This vehicle has added support through UniCONNECT+ which allows you to program your own vehicle right in your own garage"
Maybe this is a new feature starting with the Mk8?
I'm tuning mine tomorrow in my garage.
@@unacceptableminority9387 Mine is MK8 and it is not working. You can not use UniCOnnect +
Well, if you still have the jb4, time to stack it. 😬
Soooon LOL
I second this i have a custom map 6 for the miltek dp currently from jb4 , just ordered unitronic stage 1 plus from you guys for my mk8. Really curious to see what we could do with them stacked
@@BMPTuning what does stacking mean
@@youngrios to use the jb4 on top of an ecu tune. Rjracing’s is38 Gti trapped 127 or 128mph with a jb4 stack on an apr is38 tune.
Came here to say this! E30 and jb4 stack on the uni s1+ would make awesome power. Should have no issue breaking 350+ whp
You really need about 6 large exhaust tips out the back of that 2.0L. Too much back-pressure as is.
0_0 that would prob look weird... do it and tag us though, curious to see it on yours!
@@BMPTuning Maybe it should have 4 tips on each side. With a couple in the middle.
@@exothermal.sprocket There ya go! Tag us in pics once you get it done!
@@BMPTuning Maybe a couple of size-exits would also help reduce pressure. Poke a hole through the roof and run a stack up too.
Only 27lbs lol
My goal is about 430whp
should be in the realm of what these are capable of!
@@BMPTuning from what I'm seeing on the golf r's continental turbo, I could get really close to it on that turbo and e85
Oh easily, the R's are going to be making some really nice numbers on the continental. Very excited to see how far those can be pushed!
@@BMPTuning but it depends on what comes out. I think I can get a brand new continental from vw for about 1600. But I don't want to, then wait for another year+ for tuning. But maybe I'm just lazy 😆
@@brooksallenyoung I bet it can do that on 93
Shame the uni connect+ doesn’t work, bought stage 1+ with uni connect for Unitronic to tell me I wasted my money to have to wait a week+ for it to work. Another company over promising and under delivering to its customers. Returning this garbage and going APR whenever they release
Unitronic announced this, and apologized for the delay... ETA for it to go live was this week (Today) so we will see - but hardly worth being upset since they are still the only software out and you wouldnt want it to brick your ECU would you?
@@BMPTuning yeah ngl I returned the cable and just paid the fee to get it done at ShopDAP in Kent lol. I’ll grab the cable again once it’s confirmed working but holy $hit 1+ on this is a whole different animal. Things nasty now and what I wanted out of factory. Patiently waiting at this point to see how long the clutch lasts at this point
