    My girlfriend just started playing, and I want to let her know about easier ways of playing the game but I don’t want to take the freedom of the game away from her. Sometimes I feel like the more we look for efficiency the farther away from the pure joy we get from the game

      This! I remember so many games being fun when I was young and when I break it down I realize that most of the fond memories I have comes from not being so good at the game and exploring my way around it. The fast pace in society now doesn't allow that so I just enjoy my slow pace gaming nowadays where I can take my time.

    The part about getting down about exp rates is important. I wasn't having fun or feeling like I was looking at my total exp at the end of the day rather than exp/hr. You forget about slow rates when you can see you're making 1-3% total progress each day.

    • @ColdSword816P

      Instead of min maxing and burning out when looking at my xp/hour and then mentally thinking oh man X goal is 20 hours away or whatever it may be and getting demotivated.
      I've been having more fun just doing whatever I feel like making progress in everything and then if I feel like doing whatever boss I do.
      If i feel like I'm missing something to make that boss easier I go down that rabbit hole to make the upgrade.
      That's why I started ironman in the first place.
      Otherwise why do anything when you can just do X which is most efficient and then buy what u want.

    Usually, videos like this are pretentious and care way too much about how other people play the game. They'll list things like not instantly getting barrows gloves or a fire cape as "mistakes", for example. So thank you for actually being helpful instead of judgmental.

  • @Revlos
    @Revlos 11 месяцев назад +6

    Goals are absolutely vital to keep the game going. My original goal after hitting that "What do I do now" point was to get barrows gloves. Then I found out i needed to do all these quests to RFD, then when I got the gloves I diced to get the quest cape, after that I wanted to do the achievement diary (currently still grinding slayer for this) and also a side goal of making enough GP/grinding content to get that next item upgrade

    i like the note about dailies. when i first realized how great they were i got really into basically all the recurrent training methods and money makers but eventually i stopped bc it felt like it was ALL i was doing. if u do tree runs, herb runs, bird houses, magic saplings, and palm saplings, by the time you’re done you’ll probably be ready for another bird house run, and then probably another herb run. and you’re just stuck in a loop.
    Even though all of those tasks are _supposed_ to only take 5-10min each. That assumes you gear up and fill your inventory with max efficiency. I think most people’s brains take a minute to adjust to all the logistical work required to switch into doing all these different tasks every few minutes. Theyre good money and xp and I at least recommend doing tree runs at a _minimum_ whenever ur hardwood trees are up. but in general yeah… there’s nothing wrong w just ignoring birdhouse runs and just driftnet fishing when u actually decide to get some hunter training done

    Another tip: the game gives you the option to redeem 3 bonds at the same time to receive 45 days of membership instead of the usual 42. *Don’t do this.*
    Committing to playing the same game every day for 45 straight days is a lot. You’re going to have some days where you can’t or just don’t feel like logging on.
    Always redeem bonds one at a time so that you allow yourself the option of just quitting for a while without feeling like you’re wasting a shit ton of membership. The flexibility is more important than 3 extra days that you have to bend over backwards to use.

      Or make enough gold to buy a year at once

    • @Chealder
      @Chealder 11 месяцев назад +1

      For me it kind of works the other way round: I used to buy membership per month but I always felt I had to play (almost) daily to make the most of it. Last time I realised I played several months on end and decided to buy a year. Now I feel far more relaxed to not play: I basically got 5 months free over a monthly subscription so if during that year I don't play for a month or two in total, I still got the better deal.

    • @calvinnguyen1870
      @calvinnguyen1870 11 месяцев назад

      @@aaronb3225 you misunderstand. This is not about gp, it’s about feeling like you’re wasting membership when you don’t want to log in (which still happens if you spend money irl; people care about how they spend their dollars too, y’know). If you redeem one bond at a time, you can quit for 6 months totally guilt free because you’ve only wasted, at most, 14 days of membership.

  • @danieltran93
    @danieltran93 11 месяцев назад +1

    Yeah I agree with most of these, I rushed maxing on main and didn't enjoy playing the game. I skipped out on bossing and ended up quitting main to play iron mode. You will start realize that gp isn't really important, besides early game where you struggling to get early cash via pyramid or other methods lol. I learned to work with what I have and not worry too much on gear. Setting small goals like gaining a certain level in order to do clue steps or finishing a quest can make it less daunting. Graceful is good on iron, but like you said its not really needed. On my uim I barely use it , and I carry heavy gear in my inventory. Walking around Gielinor isn't that bad. I would say to others play how you wanna play and enjoy the journey. Don't compare yourself to others or beat yourself up for not having current bis. If playing uim mode be patience with yourself, it is very tedious and sometime feels endless, but just know once you get the stats, its forever.

    Your videos on the more abstract aspects of osrs are really useful and fun to listen to :)

  • @armorykittington
    @armorykittington 8 месяцев назад

    Great tips.
    I love seeing how many herb runs I can get in in a single day, especially now that I have all patches unlocked except for 1. That's a mil for less than 15 minutes of playing, and I can do it over and over, every day - if I set alarms and hit every patch in that 20 minute window. But if I don't want to, I don't.
    Sometimes I just wander around Gielinor for days, with absolutely no goal. I just do whatever. With skis on, sometimes. Sometimes I fashionscape and just walk around the map. I don't run. I don't use any energy. Just chill and see what all new I can discover. Then I can get KC if I want to. Or I can work on a skill. Or I can do clues. Or I can quest. Or I can fish. Or WC.
    That's why OSRS is so awesome. You can't burn out if you're aware of the burnout and are totally fine with smiling at it as it passes you by. It's a game. If you're not having fun - what are you even doing?

    One that was probably said and I'm just saying it a bit differently: Don't worry about doing the best method to level a skill. The best method to level a skill is the one that makes you keep clicking and getting XP. People swear by 3t mining because it's the fastest, best xp for mining, but I can't be assed so I MLM, especially because it saves me money for blast furnace smithing XP later with all the gold ore you get. For you, you might like blast mining more. Similarly you might be the type of person who gets bored doing wintertodt for firemaking. Go chop some logs and burn some logs if it makes you feel better. People also swear by superior dragon bones because "they're so fast for prayer XP" when really, they ARE faster, but at some point when you train your prayer high enough, you're still going to be clicking the altar for thousands of bones anyway, so even if you do dragon bones or lava dragon bones, you're still getting a ton of XP, just 5-10% less than if you used superiors and you're saving money in your bank too.
    I get given shit ALL the time for not doing the best methods because they'll somehow magically "make me a better player" if I do them. 9/10 times though? The same people that spout this bullshit at me are lower level than me in that given skill because they got bored of training it that way. They ask me how I still do it and I say "because I don't train it when I don't want to and I'm not a meta whore when it comes to how I train. I click something, I watch numbers go up. Even if it's inefficient, I'm still getting XP and you're not."
    TL;DR unless you're some burned out high level streamer/player on your third HCIM account OR you're a speedrunner trying to speed run maxing or w.e arbitrary weird goal you have, stop worrying about being giga efficient all the time. Stop turning games into work. Your boss isn't over your shoulder demanding you meet some arbitrary deadline. Punch out and have fun playing your game.

    Point 2 - Don't do dailies. For real I only do dailies if I'm going to the place anyway. I only do mahogany as my farm run. Doing dailies just felt like a chore interrupting what I was already doing.

    I feel like the biggest trap people fall into is feeling like they need to rush or even partake in raids. Been playing Runescape on and off for nearly 20 years now and essentially never have done any raids in RS2/3 or OSRS. The only time I have ever done a raid so far is when an account needs 1 kc for zeah elite diary. There is plenty of content in the game to never need to step foot in raids if not a fan of the content. Even on my harcore ironman I have mostly avoided raids asides from the 1 required kill. Gauntlet covers range completely and melee partially, godwars dungeon covers most of melee between bandos and torva, and the new desert treasure 2 bosses can now cover magic.

    You're one of two RS content creators I like to watch and when I first heard you mention addons in wow in the plugin video I had to do a second take for a minute there lol. That came so out of the woodwork it was weird. Feels like there's not many people doing that switch, usually it's to something like FF14 or some other game with more wow-like combat. Going from being a cutting edge and a semi high-end mythic+ tank to struggling doing my first kills of barrows when i got base 40s/50s and 50 ranged and magic for msb and ibans, was a weird change. But regardless of what I do in OSRS at least I feel like whatever I'm wasting my time on I'm progressing in some way, unlike in wow.

    Pushing a grind I hated was the final straw that got me to quit RS3, and is why I have taken a different mentality with OSRS.
    Back in the day, I had started only logging in a few times a year, not even keeping up members, and all I wanted was 85 mining. I don't know why THAT was my focus, but it was. I pushed that to burnout every time I logged in, and when I finally hit it, they changed mining the next month. It was my personal burnout grind that I never got a chance to enjoy the reward for, and THE reason I approached osrs with the mindset of no burnout grinds.

  • @cataddict_

    everyone is different. Just know that not being able to hold onto a massive grind doesn't make you "worse" than someone else.
    I always find myself feeling my willpower is inferior to these people as if I'm failing some right of passage.

    They also dropping loads of clue scrolls for collection log. So I get hits of dopamine throughout my grind, as well as collecting loads of seeds loads of herbs and loads of ensouled heads which will help me and other grinds down the road, so finding something that rewards you along the way rather than a thankless grind like rock, crabs, or whatever.

    A great tip for old players with near max main accounts that keep burning out is to bite the bullet and make a Ironman. It genuinely charges your whole look on the game and all the “useless” content as a main becomes not only useful but a fun experience most the time as the content usually gives big upgrades which would be junk usually. Stuff like mini games and quests not only become a challenge but they result in rewards that you wouldn’t care about as a main

  • @Nuvizzle
    @Nuvizzle 11 месяцев назад

    I will say, "don't do dailies" is pretty lethal advice for an ironman specifically. You knda have to keep up with at the very least daily herb runs, or there'll come a time where one of your next goals will require a high herblore level (whether that's SOTE or elite diaries or having access to divine supercombats) and you'll realize you're time gated behind months of farming that you've neglected.
    Also I actually completely agree with graceful being overrated, EVEN for irons. You can get dueling rings very easily and early, so when you really need run energy i.e. questing you can just pop into ferox and restore it while banking.

    I've been playing an unrestricted ultimate iron man account on and off since February of last year, and I have to say it's really helped me reshape my perspective on grinding in this game. Even from day one, I knew that I was gonna have to approach things with clear, concrete goals. Because my focus shifted from the generally vague concept of maxing and making a bunch of money to unlocking things that will make the rest of the game easier to play, I really came to appreciate the results of the grinds I've undertaken a lot more than on my main. Knowing ahead of time that my grinds were automatically gonna take quite a lot longer than normal due to not having a bank, I just came to accept that slower methods were okay, because all progress is progress. Also, I always make sure to pick grinds that will benefit me in multiple ways through various content unlocks, because then it makes the time feel that much more worth it. After watching this video, I've found that playing this way for long enough helps you unlearn all of the deadly mistakes you covered, hahaha.

  • @ShizuruNakatsu

    I always have goals in this game. So many of them, some more long term or short term than others. I'm working on 99 Farming and 99 Construction right now. I got 98 Farming today, and my bank now has the exact amount of Oak Planks I need for 99 Construction. I went from level 81 - 83 today in about an hour, broken into three segments of 15 - 20 minutes.
    I'm at 2000 hours now and not close to maxing. BUT those 2000 hours include a few years stuck in f2p as a child.

  • @dwerg1
    @dwerg1 11 месяцев назад

    I think I've made almost all of these mistakes. I played as a kid and quit around EoC, but didn't get that close to maxing anything. I came back to OSRS after HCIM was released and started over as that. Hated having such bad gear, deironed and played for a few years until I burnt out severely on the gp grinding gameplay loop. Started over again as HCIM thinking I could just hop back to my main if it ever got too much instead of deironing, but that just never happened. I'm still playing that ironman and it's way more progressed than the previous accounts. I did die at around 1700 total level, but I knew it was going to happen eventually anyways.
    I did get burnt out on various ironman grinds multiple times and just quit for months. I still have some massive grinds ahead of me, but I know better now. I'll break it up and go do something else for a while. No matter what I do it's progress. Burning out and staying away for half a year means no progress on anything. I'm also much more aware of what intensity of content I'm in the mood for. Sometimes I enjoy being laser focused on a boss or something, other times I just want something more chill and other times I want max afk. I know several things in all of those intensity levels that will progress me.

    Really nice video!
    The goals part, as obvious as it sounds, really was the difference for me to get to play the game. I started years ago with no idea what to do, then later I set myself a dumb goal, and after a while my friend told me that smithing your own armor is not actually a reasonable way to go, because smithing goes much much slower.
    Nowadays what I do is look at one grind I want to do, and sink some cash into it, maybe a mil maybe a bit more. All my grinds end up cash positive, but once I'm committed, I Know what I'm supposed to do. And on the other hand, I have a visual indicator of how I'm progressing as I see the number of items in the bank decrease. Instead of saying "i'll get 80 smithing", I said "i'll drop a mil in mithril bars and see where that (and reinvestments) takes me". seeing the dwindling stacks was always a boost in morale, especially every time I bought a smaller stack

    I first got into osrs because I had two friends that kept on telling me I should play it with them. At first, all I did when I played with them was kill cows and collect their cowhide. I ended up getting around base 60 combats and 43 prayer from just killing cows. Eventually, they talked me into getting membership after I complete all the f2p quests.
    My first goal as a member was to complete something that they hadn't done yet. So my first goal ended up getting the quest cape. This took me roughly 2 years to get. After that, I wanted my first 99 which ended up being farming. My next goal was to get the achievement cape (I found it funny that you mentioned that in your video haha). I'm currently 4 Elite diaries away from completing my goal.
    I completely agree with your points. I had pretty high goals and at times it was disheartening when I realized it would take a long time to do, but the thing that helped me the most was taking a break from my grinds and trying new stuff or doing content with my buddies.
    Great video. Good luck to everyone on their grinds and have fun playing osrs!

    One big thing I do to avoid burnout is simple:
    If whatever (grind) I’m currently working on is starting to become boring, I change it up to different content, whether it’s another grind or a quest/diary or just money making.

    I’ve always heard these same tips from other OSRS vids, but your words really got to me. Likely due to the firsthand experience you shared by doing opposite of what you said. Im an older player (early 2000s) that just came back to this game recently and got mem for the first time in my life. This vid helped me remind myself to not compare my account to the others around me. Thanks man.

    The biggest turnoff for me in this game has always been the snobby attitudes from maxed or end game players. I have casually enjoyed rs since i was in 3rd grade, and i really dgaf about sweating max efficiency methods. People who bank stand and judge "noobs" are some of the most pathetic people i can imagine, and to a new player it can really demotivate you. Why would i want to progress my account to hang out with those people?
    Had somebody trick me into bringing a certain item while grinding slayer because it was "bis" (it wasnt even good) and then they sat there and made fun of me for not knowing otherwise. Sorry dude, i dont spend my whole day on the wiki. I think this game is great but its definitely got a toxic side, full of people who literally have no life outside of flexing on people who do.
    Anyway, thanks for making these videos. Your attitude towards the game is way more healthy and genuinely helpful to casual players as well as serious ones. Cheers

      If I could add something. Try to always have a skill to afk when your getting bored of a piece of content. Doesn't matter the exp, as long as you keep doing it the exp will go up. I know bouncing around skills might seem engaging now, but plenty of players end up in a rut because they all have 80s and 90s skill levels that they don't want to train since they are all equally slow. But this way, you're like "hey I'm done killing zulrah for now, I'm just gonna chill and start afk woodcutting". By this time it's been about 3 months and you got yourself a 99 by afking between taking breaks from bossing. Money will come along with that too. Examples of things to afk:
      Melee Combat: Full obsidian with zerk neck and obby sword. Afk at NMZ or ammonite crabs
      Magic: Splashing (requires money/not really worth). Could high alch but click intensive.
      Runecraft: Afk bloods (nets you over 150m with full rc outfit)
      Woodcutting: Redwoods (or any other tree for that matter)
      Agility: Rooftops can be pretty low effort if you are watching a show/movie. Sepulcher is fun when you unlock all floors.
      Smithing: Smithing mithril dart tips or cannonballs is extremely afk and profitable
      Fishing: Literally anything. I enjoyed lava eels personally. But karambwans and anglerfish are also fine.
      Firemaking: Wintertodt is fast but bonfires are a thing now(cost money though but super afk)
      Thieving: Look up the sq'irk minigame method that's been possible (world 523).
      Crafting: D'hides/gem cutting/arrowheads are pretty afk with not much profit loss.
      Cooking: Fast/afk/profitable
      Fletching: Afk/profitable
      Mining: Star mining is super afk. Mlm is not really afk but fairly low effort and makes you at least 50m depending on when you start.

    I came back the game when the final sailing poll was out and a friend gave me a bond to vote. Basically i just bought bonds when they were selling for 9m+ grinded construction to 84 to max out my house. And with that done, made the plan to just bang out all the quests. I have since been playing almost daily raising my total from 1250 to almost almost 1750. Honestly the biggest takeaways are make goal roadmaps and understand your time's value.

    Tips to the vid:
    Dailys are fine if that are in line with whatever you're doing; don't pause content to do dailies, almost ever.
    Having fun is also under rated, theres also content that will fit you mood, heboxjorge made a video about it a while ago where he says just have fun and find the content that fits your mood and it goes so well & true to this game!
    OSRS Has gotten a lot of new players so I think some sort of progression based video would be good like quest -> diary -> max; so sprinkle in ca's pvming etc.

    13:26 Also just popped to mind, but
    It's totally valid to consider plugins to be cheating, in FFXIV, they are seen that way the equivalent of weak auras can get you banned if you talk about using it, and will get you banned if you stream yourself using it.
    There was a massive kerfuffle when somebody got a world first clear with a zoom mod that let them zoom out further than other players, the team was DQ'd and the player was banned.
    The problem is if plugins aren't considered to be cheating, then content needs to be developed with plugins in mind, which will lead to much more difficult content that assumes plugin use from players.
    Being anti plugin is totally fine if you enjoy the game more like that.

    I’ve been playing the game since 2007 on and off because.. life. But I will say, I came back recently and I’m genuinely surprised with how much content has come out within the last couple of years. It’s great when you’re going for efficiency but it definitely makes everything feel stale, accomplishments don’t feel as great as they used to.

    Another banger! A budget nex set up would be nice. So far, I’ve seen set ups with god dhide + arma cbow, then straight to Masori with zcb/ tbow or Masori with fang/voidwaker. Something in between would be beneficial to players who can afford more than an acb but less than full max gear. Also, letting us know when and what to upgrade to like a gear progression guide would be nice. Gear progression guides in general would be nice for certain bosses but I understand would be redundant for a lot of bosses. After a few of those kind of vids, maybe make a tier list of really nice gear to have for general bossing /pvm and a separate vid of overrated weapons?

    OSRS is such a grindy game that you should focus on the progress rather than the finish line. I feel happy to see being 10% closer to a level rather than being annoyed I haven't leveled up. I'm learning to do Leviathan and happy to see I can get to its enraged phase consistently even though I haven't killed it yet.
    Even irl I learn to look at my progress more and more, especially since I'm writing a novel and I can tell you that's a big grind, but I always feel happy to find the perfect sentence and see my word count go up.

    If I can give my 2 cents on setting goals. I just recently came back from a long break because Im stuck on galveck on my Ironman. I always just kept thinking when I come back Ill try again. Well thankfully my coworker that brought me back got me out of that mindset, and put me in a mindset of getting my range a couple more levels before I go back. I decided I wanted to train range using chins. I am now almost 99 hunter getting chins for range and doing herbiboar for herbs. (Also got herbi so thats a plus) I set my goal at either 100 herbiboars or 1000 chins a day, I feel as I can do with my limited time well still having time to go do other things like achievement diaries.
