This was Great! 👍 I was born in 78 and this reminds me of my Dad(Ford guy)and my uncle John(chevy nut). Dad's had about 5 different f150s, uncle John just got new Z71. I drive a 91 mustang GT hatchback and it's Fuel injection Thank God!
I'm a Mopar guy but my favorite GM division is Pontiac they had some of the best engines in it's day in the 60's and 70's after 81 Pontiac used nothing but Chevy engines
Something disturbing about a muscle car that has less than 300HP. And these look more like sports cars than muscle cars. They even went as far as making the Mustang look like a rice burner in the 90s and early 2000s. Glad all that got fixed after the early 2000s.
They didn't rev very high so HP was limited but they had stump pulling torque that provides excellent offline acceleration. All of the muscle car era monsters made torque for days.
@@genegeneish Yes it did. When I met my wife back in the late 90's I had to drive to the DMV to get it inspected. Two guys came up and one said "Yo that's a fat ride!". Yeah, she was impressed lol. Married her and she made me get ride of the car. She said it wasn't practical. She's gone now and all I want is my car back!
@@JustMe-ws2pe Yeah well she said it wasn't practical, like how's it going to look with car seats? Yet, she drove it every chance she got. That's what women do however. They want your full attention and adoration. They don't want competition from a car.
kano b truly missed yet, out of its misery. GM would of kept fucking with it and driving it's name further in the ground. The last true Pontiac muscle was the 2002 trans am. The gto and G8 came from Aussie Re-badged. Fun cars but not Pontiac designed. Hell even the G6 was a clone from Opel or some euro brand GM owned at the time. Douche bags had the world by the balls in the 2000-2004 era. But they pissed it all away with dumbshit investments and caused the death of Pontiac Oldsmobile, hummer and Saturn. They could of made billions with these brands if they would of restructured when sales started falling. Instead they kept pumping out cars that didn't sell.
Michael, the last true Pontiac engine was made in 1981... exPres. EvilBushJr. totally collapsed/bankrupted the USA and most of the world economies and companies by Sept. 2008 after 8 years in office and caused the GM and Chrysler quickie bankruptcies... Ford would have gone under also, but it had just sold Aston Martin or some other Division and had some working cash available (if they could get it out of a bank!)... www.wsj.com/articles/SB122169431617549947 .
BuzzLoLoL, how is it Bush's fault for GM building crap? Delorean keeping GM afloat through the drug trade. And Chrysler has always needed bail outs starting with Jimmy Carter. Then Mercedes and now with Fiat.Clinton deregulated mortgage and the banking industries in the 90's leading to corruption like Bernie Madoff bilking Americans $billion's. Ford going under? Never a chance. Ford invested $billions in Volvo, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mazda etc. and saved these companies from collapse. (which is my only pet peeve with Ford.79-93 Mustang, 89-99? T-Bird.Unchanged designs. Then the 2 seater T-Bird? What were they thinking?) If Ford made a retro Cougar, Mercury would probably be around? And as for Bush Jr? I saved up my tax rebates he sent out to millions of Americans during his term and with my savings, I bought a 09 Shelby GT500 in 11-08. Still own it today.
Not to mention that fully loaded only meant AC, power windows , and AM/FM Cassette. Cloth seats. Nothing like a fully loaded vehicle today. No comparison.
@@Bassin_withaustin I rented a new Silverado from U-haul and that thing felt like a muscle car when you floored it, it surprised me with how quick it felt for how heavy it is

Yeh 88 fox body owner however with a few performance goodies these cars fox bodies will haul ass. They are a favorite for racers cause there lightweight and look good and prices are cheap er...now however there going up so be happy u own one me and my son both have one enjoy it 😀😀😀
I hear ya. Lots of mods u can do to a foxbody. However to find one completely stock is always worth more. Much like most classics. And yes, very happy I have one! Very far from stock tho. Few engine mods with a larger cam and heads and upper intake.
@@brawdz31 i still prefer the old 300, just enjoying something for what it is is the best way. now everything have 500 hp but also everything suck. take a 1965 mustang or a first gen RX7. many things are faster than that now but they are fun for what they are. take GM they will stop the camaro again because it dosent sell, but it have tons of power and what have you, if gm just made an exact copy of the 1969 made the engines pass the emission test with TBI and GM wouldnt have been able to build enough to fullfill the order. you go to a car show where there is ferrari and 1000hp veyron but people gather around that fully original duster with an inline 6 with 140 hp lol. that says something

The thing that really hurt the Mustang fox body was the small 225 tires and 3:08 gear ratio. They really came alive with 255 tires in the back and a 3:73 gear.
@@rodbirch5876nope. I bought a brand new 85 GT 5 speed in Oct of 1984 and it had dual headers, mufflers and tail pipes…but it all ran through one cat. The 86’s had true dual all the way with an H pipe. They were also fuel injected. Side note I still daily drive my 85 😊

The coolest was the IROC .... Until the neighbor got a Grand National. So then the guy with the IROC got a Lotus so I digress. Remember disposable income? It was a beautiful thing. Barracudas, Merlin Block Novas and all types of power graced the neighborhood.
i have owned all 3 of those vehicles at the same time in 1991-1999. A 1986 Ford Mustang hatchback 5.0L, 1986 Pontiac Firebird ws6 (the ws6 was added in 1987), and 1991 Chevrolet Camaro 5.7L. Out of the 3, i still have one, and it is the Firebird. Better ride, better handling faster than the other two. Over the years, the Firebird has received many upgrades, a new corvette engine, transmission, rear end and new engine management computer took the place of the old outdated 5.0L factory Chevrolet power train, as well as a new forward facing ram air induction hood. On the inside, new (at the time) top of the line heated 2002 Firebird leather seats, in dash dvd/gps/Bluetooth entertainment center, with remote start/alarm system. It's been updated to today's technology with everything you can want, and none of the crap you don't want. The Midnight Glossy Black paint job with the red scanner light on the front is pure icing on the cake. 😉
200hp doesn’t sound like much these days but it was all relative. Since the average family car had anywhere from 75hp to 120hp, you were king of the street in one of these…. until some kid pulled up in his dad’s 60s era MOPAR. This was actually a really fun time to have a sports car. Every little aftermarket upgrade gave you a real advantage on the street. If you had the cash, a cam and head upgrade would put that Mustang into to the low 13s easy.
I’m a 80’s man and these were the cars to have in their day. As for HP, you have to remember that we weren’t far out of the 70’s. In the 70’s, the American auto corporations sucked all of the hp out of their engines. The 350 in the 1979 corvette only had 225 hp and the ones in the Comaro’s only had from 155-175 hp. That in itself should show you what they did to the engines in the 70’s. The early 70’s mustangs were to heavy and not enough hp. Then they made that little turd that they called a mustang for several years in the 70’s with 4 and 6 cylinder engines for better fuel mileage. It was only in the 80’s that Ford started trying to make the Mustang fast again. I had a 1985 Black GT Mustang Convertible and I loved that car. No it wasn’t nearly as fast as the Mustangs today, but i loved it. I can still remember the first time I saw the new GT Mustang tv commercial. At the end of it they said “The Boss is back.”
Most of the HP loss was due to stringent emissions in an age when a computer powerful enough to control an engine with great power and low emissions didn't exist in a size and cost suitable for an automobile to carry on board. I had a 1973 Gran Torino with a 5.8 Cleveland. The Cleveland was a powerhouse only two years before, but by 1973, it had 8 to 1 compression ratio in an effort to meet emissions standards. It had OK torque due to it's displacement but had maybe 150HP tops, and it had 5 miles of rubber vacuum lines running all around the engine bay. Ford's EECIV (for instance) was a very powerful engine management computer for it's time and allowed the GT Mustang to be made.
@@reido_dorito yes I am a man of culture and badass Mustangs ! I've had three of them in 83 84 and 85 convertible all GTS ! I loved every one of them ! I am a true Ford gangster !👍
To all the idiots saying a new Accord would beat these etc. etc. etc. Nobody cares. Back then the Accord had a whopping 85hp or so and these are just stock comparisons. We all know with some money thrown at them, they’ll go as fast as you can afford and look better while doing it. Don’t forget the coolness of nostalgia that these new cars (appliances) won’t ever have. So basically, even though your new Hyundai might be quicker than these, you’re still a tool in today’s world! BTW… fastest street legal car in the world is a 5000+hp 1984 Hurst Olds. Look it up.
I bought a new '85 IROC-Z / Z28 that was, 34 years ago now, a giant leap ahead of anything that Detroit had built in more than a decade, not so much in power, but very much in handling and braking. The Tuned Port Injection was super advanced compared to carbs. and Throttle Body Injection, and I could just see it was right for a blower and after the novelty of owning it for a while, I installed a Paxton supercharger. It then made as much horsepower as the corvette would make later in '92, with the LT1. Later, after the wife had gone, and the 3 kids were grown, I bought a Vette. But for a while in the late 80's, I had a very fast family of five.
It was fun coming of age when these roamed the USA.I had a new 88 Mustang GT off the lot for $13700 with A/C power windows and locks and a stereo cassette.
I remember when Dolby was like a state of the art feature on ..... GRIN cassette decks LOL If you ask todays teens about Dolby they will probably say "Whos Dolby? a football player? LOL
The 2 door Mustang sedan with a 5.0 was faster than a GT. And...about 4 grand cheaper. My brother's first new car. It came with a 5.0, 5 speed stick, AM radio....and that was it. And it wasn't even a hatchback. He use to kill Camaros and Trans Ams and a few Vettes back in the late 80's. Fun times.
81zed I very seriously doubt he killed any vettes get real dude stock vette had l98 tuned port aluminum heads header's and around 350 hp sorry your full of shit
Actually it did spank a few Vettes back then but definitely not all of them. The ones he couldn't beat, he gave them a good run for their money. Buick T-Type and Grand Nationals were another story. A stock L98 never put out anything close to 350 hp back then and never had headers...only center dump sheep horn manifolds.
@rich duley I just bought myself a 1989 Iroc-Z not to long ago. The previous owner swapped the 305 for the 350 and kept its 5-speed manual. Its like a dream lol
***** Mitsubishi lists the Mirage at just under $14k on its website for its cheapest trim level. Certain dealerships may advertise $10k for them, but that isn't the original list price.
Unfortunately, I did that once in my '85 Mustang GT on a public road on a descending corrkscrew turn. Fortunately, there was no one else on the road at the time. Lesson learned.
Wrong, ford couldn't produce heads that met emissions that could flow like the Chevy's heads. Chevy has always had better flowing heads, Chevy forced ford into DOHC 32 valve engines to try and compete with Chevy's pushrod 16 valve engines. And mustangs were never cooler than the IROC Camaro.

Nice dig by the Mustang (by 1985 standards) in the low end. It seems like the 5.0 came on with so much more torque in the low RPM ranges especially the 4V engine. That Holley 4 barrel worked like magic on that 5.0 Ford.

Great video. everything came out as expected. the Mustang is a runner, and the GM`s are for corners. Had a 86 Mustang GT factory stripper car, only a radio. ran 14.0 with a set of street slicks. Love the old comparisons. BTW, anyone else notice the inflation from then to now? $11k for a new 5.0 mustang, now were talking $40k!!!!! Holy crap!
The LX was faster, which is crazy, but thats how it worked. On inflation, that is what will happen when your government and the fed print $15 trillion dollars out of thin air in a span of about 10 years.
They're faster than the gm cars, but it seems like it's pretty much an economy car with a big motor. Higher center of gravity, short wheelbase, not real sleek. A lot of the cars In the drag racing videos that crash are foxbodies, that's probably why.
@Planet Purgatory Yup, just watch Street Outlaws on the Discovery Channel. Chuck S has that '89 White LX with a small block and rear 4 link suspension running sub 10's. Proof that those old Fox bodies are still worth it. No less you can still find them sitting in peoples yards with no plates and a broken window... my neighbor has a blue LX doing just that.
I had an 84 Trans Am, but mine was black on top, gold on the bottom and gold wheels. I didn’t think much of it at the time (because I was in high school 86-89), but it was pretty awesome in hindsight. I guess that’s a part of being young. You don’t always appreciate those times as much because you think your younger years will go on forever.
Spent many weekends at that DQ and going to 75-80 drag strip. DQ is still there in Odenton and 75-80 is just outside Frederick MD. Drag strip is there but no longer in operation. 1/8th mile track, Friday night Classic car night. This old video was a trip down memory lane!
I get that in 85 190hp was good, but everyone seems to forget that cars of the 60's were pushing well over 400hp. So for the year 190 was a lot, but nobody would have been impressed when comparing them to the 15 year old cars
That 85 4BBL 302 in the Mustang would blow away the old 68 J code 4BBL 302 even with far less compression. There were some freaks in the 60s like the 427 side oilers and 426 HEMIs and chevy COPO 427s but most of those 60s 400 HP cars were closer to 300 HP by post 1973 standards. You see it in their trap speeds. Pretty sure by 1985 the Chevy and Ford small blocks were making a decent bit more power than they did in the 60s.
Yeh but put that in a fox body 5.0.that 210 horsepower add headers cold air in take upper lower performance intake and my friend u have a racecar that will eat most cars for lunch and its all cheap add ons. So for not a lot cash u can race with more expensive so called fast cars lol 😀😀😀
Funny but take a 89 5.0 add headers performance intake. Cold air induction and a little lightfox body mustang and u will eat 90 percent of the old muscle cars for breakfast and that's no joke aaaahhhaaaaaa u like that blah blah 😀😀😀
Look at the late 1980's Chevy Corvette Lotus designed ( GM owned them & hand built them in America ) LT5 DOHC 5.7 all aluminum engine. Still holds well to this day. Power varied starting at 375HP-430HP I believe and revved up to 7,500 - 9,000 RPMS.
I had a 1985 Mercury Capri RS. I loved that car it was a better version of the Mustang GT in my opinion. Basically the same car but looked a little cooler with the dual hood intakes and the ground effects package.
Until the Firebird Formula showed back up in 87' with 350 TPI the true mustang slaying F body. Yea it didn't have the ground effects and all that but it was the lightest 350 tpi and the fastest and had the same handling as the Trans Am.
Excellent video. I love everything about it. Actually surprised to see the mustang outperform both cars! Aweome throwback love the outfits the style the guys arguing everything. Well done
For the era these 3 cars were considered pretty quick. Never did I think I would see the day of 450+ HP Camaros and Mustangs STOCK. I had a gorgeous 1992 white Firebird Formula. It was slow as a boat with its TBI 305 but it was actually a really nice car. Had great brakes and surprisingly good handling. It may have gotten stomped by every Mustang GT in town but it was as reliable as a hammer. Never a single problem.
My high school car was an 86 GT with - wait for it... the first fuel-injection 5.0. Dad & I rebuilt it from a wreck. Loved that car, and the time we shared working on it together.
+Underpantsniper You're right, that's a fast time for a hatchback carb car. That would be good time for a 87+ car with the better heads.... I also remember the 305 tuned ports being faster than the HO carbed motors....
+Robert Elmo Low option 87 cars with the 10 minute tuneup were well into the 13's at over 100, very respectable for 1987. I am sure no one back then could have imagined what the restart of the Pony wars would lead to.
SerenityNow, I guess you're too young to have heard about what was at that time, a very sophisticated design in the IROC's TPI, but that was 34 years ago after all ! Hey, maybe I'm your Pop? Ask your Mama, maybe she'll remember me, if she wasn't too drunk !
I do think the Iroc-Z looks great now, even though I wasn't a huge fan back in the day. Whenever I find an 80s and 90s Camaro/Firebird (or even Corvette) for sale, 100% of the time they are automatics. Seems really rare to find a manual, especially the 350ci Camara/Firebird. On the other hand, Mustang manuals are much easier to find.
Only thing that croses my mind would be the 1le but i dont know exactlt the drivetrain specks those had i just got an iroc as a first car not to long ago this year so ive been reading a lot about them and still have a lot to learn lol!
+SonOfTamriel Nobody made a 5spd that could last behind a 350, they were common to go out even behind v6s.The vette had a manual trans, but it was a 4spd with a od gear set add to the back. Google 4+3 transmission.
Back in that time period american manufactured car speedo's were limited to 85mph unless it was a law enforcement package. That's why you would see 55 circled or highlighted in red or orange. gracien69
Actually there were some vehicles built in 1979 that had speedometers going up from 100mph to 130mph like the Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Mazda RX-7

I almost fell in love when I saw the 1985 Mustang GT. It was a beautiful car and - along with the IROC-Z - was proof that performance was coming back to Detroit.
I agree. '85 is when it all seems to have started taking shape. I had just started driving. I've read a lot of comments about how these speeds and 1/4 mile times aren't that fast, but this younger generation doesn't realize that this budding technology is what laid the groundwork for our newer cars. In the early 70's there were government restrictions on how much horsepower a car could have. It was due to the oil shortage or gas crises or some other govt. concocted crap. As a result, most cars of the mid 70's to early 80's were underpowered and slow as molasses. When the 85 Mustang GT came out, it was like a breath of fresh air. I've noticed a lot of folks talking about how fast the 5.7 liter (350 c.u. to us old timers) Chevy was but, evidently I lived in an alternate universe because, I had a stock '83 El Camino with the 5.0 (305 c.u.) and I could outrun 350's all day long. I couldn't come close to beating a GT though. The only GM car I know of that could even run with the Mustang GT was about '87 or '88 when Pontiac came out with the GTA. It was every bit as fast as the Mustangs GT's of those years. And back then, if you wanted a car that was quick off the line, you went with a manual transmission. There was a noticeable difference in a Mustang GT with a manual vs. automatic transmission. The GTA evidently didn't know that though. When I drove it is when I realized that an automatic transmission could be just as quick off the line as a manual. Good Times.
Jimmy Parris 1985 GT was great if you went with the 5-Speed. The autos didn't get the roller cam, headers or 4 BBL intake. they had essentially the same 2 barrel intake from 79 with central fuel injection. Only made 165 HP. I think later in that year they added the tube headers off the stick shift car and up the horsepower rating to 180. My 210 HP manual GT felt like a rocket compared to the auto.
The automatic Mustang GT was a lot slower because most of them had a "detuned" version of the 5.0L (actually......technically a 4.9 and not a 5.0; but I digress) or 302 V8. The 5-speed GT had the "5.0L H.O." with the 4bbl carb, while the automatic GT coupes came with the "5.0 EFI" used in the F-150 pickup truck and the Crown Victoria. If I recall correctly, the difference in 1985 was about 15 horsepower. For 1986, the Mustang GT also got fuel injection and went from 210 hp up to 215. In 1987 things got even better - as Ford improved the "5.0L H.O." and horsepower went up to 225. My first new car was a 1988 Mustang GT with a 5-speed. I could eat Camaro and Trans Am coupes for lunch - except for the IROC-Z and Trans Am GTA - which both were offered with the larger "5.7 TPI" (350) V8. Chrysler even put forth some pretty vicious front-drive performance cars too - but they were not the same. Even so, a 4cyl turbocharged Chrysler Lazer or Dodge Daytona could hold its own. They just were not as durable or fun as a rear-drive V8 car.
In stock form it was the best of the these cars at the time. The Chevy motor was more robust and could handle more modified power, but from the factory the 4.9 was king. If Ford kept say a cobra line through the 80s and used the 351w in sport car form, it would've been ugly for GM.
+Ron, in 1950's, we bored Chevy 283's out 1/8" to 4" bore ( x 3" stroke) and called them " 301's "... Chevy later called them DZ 302's... Pontiac "301" is also 4" x 3" = 302"... 1969 Pontiac 303" was 475 HP... Basically, a destroked Ram Air V 400...
@@FL50ssp The suspension was pretty outdated at that time, but Ford continued to improve upon it into the '90s.... they even offered a Mustang Cobra in the early '90s with independent rear suspension (definite collector's item).
I remember how fast the fuel gauges would drop just driving any of those carburetor V-8's normally.....my 5L would go through 1/8 tank starting and warm up on freezing cold mornings - before I even backed out of the driveway.....and ran like dog poop until a few miles warmed it up fully....there's another 1/8 gone....meanwhile, my mom's 88 1.6L 116 hp 5-spd Corolla would go 400 miles on $9....less than what I spent on just one short drive to work....and it beat a Vega with a 327 swap once in a street race....
@@scottb8175 lol, no they don't out accelerate a 308 GT0 of the 70s even today. Corollas even in JDM spec which are the fastest of them are not remotely fast.
@@Flying_GC I read a road test where the 2-valve 308 did a 17.1 sec 86 mph 1/4 mile...that's pretty pathetic for a 3L V-8 exotic. The Corolla XRS's 1.8L 2ZZ best 1/4 ET for the standard transmission is just under 16 seconds....

All of the muscle car era monsters made torque for days.

kano b truly missed yet, out of its misery.

Then Mercedes and now with Fiat.Clinton deregulated mortgage and the banking industries in the 90's leading to corruption like Bernie Madoff bilking Americans $billion's. Ford going under?
If you had the cash, a cam and head upgrade would put that Mustang into to the low 13s easy.
it woulda been nice if Motor week had threw a GLHS Charger or Omni in this shootout
Until you realize a 60’s mopar isn’t any faster than the 14.3 the mustang did if not slower.
Motor trend rated the big bad 1970 426 hemi cuda at 14.1 in the 1/4
Also these card were much lighter. This 85 GT weighed 3,150 lbs! Today's GT is just a few pounds under 4k.
The HP numbers are so misleading. They all had loads of torque. Stop looking at HP ratings as if they actually mean anything. It's just silly.

To all the idiots saying a new Accord would beat these etc. etc. etc. Nobody cares. Back then the Accord had a whopping 85hp or so and these are just stock comparisons. We all know with some money thrown at them, they’ll go as fast as you can afford and look better while doing it.

80s cars were so powerful... 210 horse power it's amazing they didnt flip over backwards off the line
Power varied starting at 375HP-430HP I believe and revved up to 7,500 - 9,000 RPMS.
form 1974 to the mid 90's 200 hp was like 500 today
They had 300 ft pounds of torque. Which made up for the low hp
I had a 1985 Mercury Capri RS. I loved that car it was a better version of the Mustang GT in my opinion. Basically the same car but looked a little cooler with the dual hood intakes and the ground effects package.
I absolutely LOVE the Capri!!! I own 2 of them. An 86 and an 82!
@@slickwillyracing4020 Sweet, I wish I still had mine.
I had 2 1985 Capris also. Loved those cars. Had many other Mustang fox bodies too. Capris are the best.
"5.0" In a straight line beat these two up for a minute back in the day and was kicking ass until it had to turn. I like all three for what they were.
Kemtitan Productions I love these mustang gts but back in the day my 1969 olds cutlass with a 350 rocket ate all three of these cars for breakfast!!

A 14.3 second 1/4 ET isn't all that bad to be honest..
+Underpantsniper You're right, that's a fast time for a hatchback carb car. That would be good time for a 87+ car with the better heads.... I also remember the 305 tuned ports being faster than the HO carbed motors....
+Robert Elmo
Low option 87 cars with the 10 minute tuneup were well into the 13's at over 100, very respectable for 1987. I am sure no one back then could have imagined what the restart of the Pony wars would lead to.
+CareerFireman
I saw a 13,000 mile 85 GT T-Top car for sale at Fords at Carlisle this past summer, I was absolutely in love with it.
+scott9050 LOL these whippersnappers have no idea what a 10 minute tune up is...
+Robert Elmo Removing the silencer in the intake, adjusting timing and a shorter bypass drive belt.

@@bloolouboyle yeah to cover the shit smell of the peace of shit.
BZBEAST12
Interesting, I was pretty sure they had a manual option for the 350. Been a long time...
Yup not very reliable in those applications really a shame it never was done

Pre RUclips... I would watch this with my dad on PBS/channel 9 in the 80's-90's in the St.Louis area. Good memories!
Had that mustang before but always loved the iroc.
Mustang guy : And disc brakes up front
Trans Am guy : So don't mention 'em
IM WEAK
Gm did offer a manual with a 305 tpi.
mooch514 Yeah it would have at least came second with a 5 speed.
not until they beefed up the t5, they only offered the iroc with a 5 speed in 87 and onward
5 speed and disconnect the AC. LOL
My second car ever was a black, '84, 5 speed, Fox body, and I loved it to death (almost several times, literally) !!!
Ford went for straight line speed, Chevy went for handling, and Pontiac went for balance. I would go for the Trans Am.
Isnt that what a muscle car is about? Straight line speed? You want a car that handles get a miata or some shit
dakota croasdale These are pony cars, they aren’t JUST about straight line speed.
didn't the speedometers of the Mustang's from this period only go up to 85mph?
+Doobie1975 In 1985 they did, and so did the Camaro and Trans Am.
Back in that time period american manufactured car speedo's were limited to 85mph unless it was a law enforcement package. That's why you would see 55 circled or highlighted in red or orange. gracien69
From 79-81 it was federally mandated that speedometers could only go to 85 mph. In late 86 firebirds and camaros started getting 145mph speedos.
Actually there were some vehicles built in 1979 that had speedometers going up from 100mph to 130mph like the Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Mazda RX-7
you can go over 85mph in 3rd gear , no problem
Can't believe them cars are 32 years old already, Man how time flys

What a blast from the past, I was able to ride and and run around in new examples of both the IROC an 89 and my buddies brand new 85 Mustang GT they were both hoots to drive good times for shure!!
When I first started racing in HS, these were the cars to beat.
til the grand national came out. turbo 6 cyl
Jason Voorhees Yea but weren’t those expensive at the time?
you know this video is depressing when a guy is bragging about a trans am with 190 horsepower
you know it's a little depressing when someone comments on a video talking about cars from the 1980's being depressing - as if that guy from the video should have knowledge of cars from 30 years into the future
At least they HAD Trans-Ams back then.
The only depressing thing about that trans am is that it was being choked by emissions.
Even my stock nissan maxima has 220 h.p...sad.
@@scsi_joe EXEPT, that the video was made in Nov 2015 - after the 6th gen Camaro release and I think a Mustang refresh for 2016. This was a MotorWeek nostalgia piece, complete with exaggerated '80s styles, and the drive-in with carhops. @Joe Mamma seriously Joe, I bought a new iroc in 89 it out ran all mustang vettes 454 trucks they even hauled one Stang in with Slick's had to race him twice said he missed a gear
Yep; huge difference between the 5.0 EFI and the 5.0 H.O. engine!
Fox body mustangs are easily one of the worst designed bodies of any car.
Love the 5.0 badge on the 4.9 liter Ford.
In stock form it was the best of the these cars at the time. The Chevy motor was more robust and could handle more modified power, but from the factory the 4.9 was king. If Ford kept say a cobra line through the 80s and used the 351w in sport car form, it would've been ugly for GM.
+Paul, I think the 4.9L badge went onto the 300" straight 6 van/truck engine later...
+Nate, Ford did offer EFI 351W Mustangs later again at times...
Which ones? Only one I can think of were the Saleen's depending on year.
"[The Mustang] may be all over the track, but it sure is fast." Amen brother! Truer words were never spoken.
And it still holds true today. Would have thought by now frod could have figured out how to design a better chassis to compete with GM.
@@FL50ssp The suspension was pretty outdated at that time, but Ford continued to improve upon it into the '90s.... they even offered a Mustang Cobra in the early '90s with independent rear suspension (definite collector's item).

"respect" is misplaced 79.4% of the time according to surveys.
