The 5th gen Mustangs are by far the best looking Mustang since 1973. They totally ruined it in 2015. The 6th gen is not as hideously ugly as the Foxbody, but nowhere near as good looking as the 5th gen. But car manufacturers tend to do that. They don't seem to know what they had. The 5th gen Camaro was a nice looking car. The 6th gen was a nightmare.

Back in 2004 when the cobra and the SS were common I used to own a 2004 Mustang GT six speed manual. My car's only mod was a Borla Stingers catback. I outpaced a 1998 Trans Am, took on a 2004 Mach 1 and stay ahead within a bumper and I also beat a 1998 Cobra but barely. All the races were pretty closed and I think the main difference was that I was a hell of a driver. I retired my 2004 GT when I sold it to my brother and bought a 2011 Mustang GT which is just a totally different beast of a car. Not once did I cared for the late 90s early 2000s Camaros. I always liked the Trans Am Ws6 and the Cobras better.

456 gear and drag radials could get the cobra to real low 13 possibly high 12 in good air. It is unreal what a change from 3.27 to 4.56 does for those 4v cars back in those days. I would do 4.30-456 if na and if supercharged I'd still do 4.10. Them cars need gears badly.

Michael tucker this shit is biased as hell. The guy in the z28 roasted the tires and never attempted to regain traction. My 14.2 second 89 formula firebird with a free modded tpi305 killed sn95 GTs twice a week for years at Darlington dragway. Most of the sn95 GTs mustang ran high 14s and low 15s. My 02 ws6 6 speed was box stock and in mint condition when I got it with 33k miles on it in 2012. My first day at the track I was running 12.8s with a 2.0 60'. It killed stock 04 cobras as I got used to launching it. That z28 ls1 should have walked that shitstain the entire 1/4. I've never seen anyone but a complete newb run a high 13 with ls1 auto f-body. Those are decent driver in an LT1 times. The mustangs were very overrated on paper for their power numbers just to try to match up with the ls1 cars. The LS1 was very underrated considering most of the 6 speed cars would put down more power at the rear wheels than the engine was advertised to produce at the flywheel . Even a lot of stock autos put down 330ish rwhp when the flywheel numbers were suppose to be 325hp. This shit is a joke. The only mustang that could keep up with ls1 f-bodies was the 04 cobra and it took 8psi from a supercharger to do it. That's around a 50% increase over what that engine would have made naturally aspirated. Old lightly modified ls1 f-bodies are still beating the new 5.0s. At least those races are actually close. I have to call total bullshit on this videos drag race.

The LS1s *actually* made around 350hp (more with ram air), the Mustang GT barely squeaked out 260 in '99, and even the Cobra was bested by nearly 50 horsepower, until the 03-04 Cobras.

Now in my mid thirties, a lot more mellow, and a lot more open minded, I dig mustangs now too. Hell, even challengers. I can appreciate any of the new pony cars. All are well executed, more refined, and much more powerful. Can't really go wrong with any choice of new V8, manual transmission, rear drive sports cars. pontiacGXPfan, Matt Dirks is on the right track. The Chevy pushrod motors are small on the outside.
I've seen a photo of a LS motor next to a 32v V8 from Lexus. The Lexus cylinder heads are huge, because they each have 2 cams in them. From the outside the Lexus V8 looked almost twice as big as the Chevy, even though its displacement was 4L vs. 7L, and its power was 300 vs. 500. A Ford 5.0L DOHC engine is slightly bigger, costs almost $7000 brand new, and there aren't many of them available for cheap in junkyards (yet). The Ford 4.6L DOHC engines are actually bigger still, and I hear the aftermarket for them is fading away as manufacturers and vendors shift to favor the 5.0.

Looking back, it almost didn't make sense as it was shown arbitrarily on broadcast TV and the odds of a casual car buyer seeing an episode featuring the car they were thinking about was very unlikely. It was really only beneficial to people too young to drive but just wanted to dream about what car they might get (that's who I was) or for car salesmen to do research on the competition. Compare that to today where they would've been a great resource to quickly compare competing cars to make a buying decision, but now there's a zillion youtubers effectively making the same kind of videos, but perhaps not with the same level of consistency and fact listing.

Ain't no ls anything ever done that with that many stock parts with anywhere near 4.6 liters of displacement. When I was 18 I wanted either of these cars so bad, but was in no place to afford one. No that I'm a little older and have a little more money, I have a nice reliable truck, but every time I see one of these on the road I get a little nostalgic. Both of those cars had so much HP for that time, crazy to think my wife's Pilot has 285. Also crazy to think about the evolution of both Ford and Chevy motors; the incredibly reliable old-school push rod LS and the very technically advanced DOCH Coyote. Still so awesome.

Just because that pilot has 285 hp don't mean it's anywhere near as fast as these. Don't mistake similar hp for similar performance. People make this mistake often when comparing cars from yesterday with more modern usually much more heavy newer stuff.

Supra TT single or dual, depending on the size of the exhaust you can get the same flow rate. When the Camaro concept for 93 body style was at the track, it was out running the Corvette in the qmile. There was an article back then in I think road n track stating that gm didnt want the pony out running the horse so they kinked the air intake and went from dual to single exhaust. Dual is better no doubt, but you can get plenty of air flow from a single 3" exhaust.

    • @ak3617

They only did the single (wider) exhaust for 98 SS. I had that car. It was really fun because a lot of people thought it was a V6 dressed up to look like a SS. That is until you would light em up...and they could hear the exhaust and see you fly away. Back in the late 90's the SS was king. Fun times....I miss that car.
