- I've always been curious about how good the kimchi I find in UK supermarkets is, well today I bought 4 jars of kimchi all from non-Korean brands to see how good (or bad) they are.

The shudder that went through me when I read the title, god speed sir.
At university my Korean flatmate, made home made kimchi, it was delicious, sadly since then I've tried several jars of kimchi and packets of kimchi, they just don't taste the same :(
Baxters (a big established brand name here in the UK) have started doing kimchi now. As somebody who very rarely buys none-Korean kimchi I took a chance and actually rather liked it. Big punchy flavour and not far off the Chongga I often buy. In an emergency feels like it'll do the job. Thought it worth a mention for anybody else in the UK reading the comments.
I've seen a few Koreans add carrots to kimchi but it's usually finely shredded. I tried the last one. It doesn't taste like Kimchi but it still has a nice taste. It tastes more like Chinese fermented vegetables
Fascinating!!! I usually buy the 3rd brand... thinking that it's authentic! Thank you so much for setting the record straight!!!
The Yutaka one I’ve tried before and it’s total junk. Best one is in H Mart in New Malden where they make and sell kimchi in these plastic bags for £1.29 per KG, real bargain!
I’ve got the same problem on the east coast in the US… although I’ve never had the misfortune of finding grey kimchi! The American brands are often vegan, or fine chopped, or have carrots lol. I finally found a Korean imported brand and it was really good and came in big jars for decent prices. I need a big jar because I’ll eat like a cup or more in a sitting if it’s good lol. But the store stopped selling it! 😭 Then I was excited to find a Korea restaurant that sells theirs! …but it was canned so no more live bacteria 😔 and it was $15 for a half a pint. Definitely not in my budget. I’m just going to HAVE to make it myself lol. I’m nervous. I ferment a lot of basic things but kimchi seems labor intensive lol
Way easier than you'd think, actually. Try to put together a simple mak kimchi or cucumber-based "oi sobagi" and then keep trying more recipes as you get more confidence and figure out what you like.
In the U.S., there is also fake Kimchi brand that comes with a full of tomato sources...lol. It is not that hard to make original Korean Kimchi at home and make sure you don't need to have prawns. However, there is an official Korean Kimchi variant that comes with prawns; it is originated from Kangwha island but majority of Korean people don't like prawns in Kimchi.

had me laughing my fat little tush off AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I made the mistake of making kimchi at home, loooving it and then months later buying supermarket kimchi.....what a disappointment. Having never tasted kimchi before making my own I was sure that these supermarket kimchi could not Korean approved. Homemade is always the best.
Brilliant idea - I’ve always walked past these and never been tempted…
i had the kimchi's for a few days, but was just dreading to make this video 😂
The nicest kimchi ive tried has been gotten in tescos, its the sun-hee brand.
I tried the Yutaka brand from Tesco and agree its too wet and mushy.
Costco sell a 750g jar of Jongga Kimchi for £6.49 which tastes much better.
Do you have a homemade kimchi recipe
Have you got any recommendations for good Kimchi brands you can get in the UK? I've got an Oseyo just down the road from me so I'm hoping I'll be able to find smth better than the ones in this video there lol
The ones you get in Asian food shops will be a lot better, but nothing beats homemade
Thanks for this video was useful, you’ve definitely stopped me from buying jars of kimchi, especially because I have never tried it before.
Hi there, can you recommend where to get a decent kimchi and what Is meant to be in there? I'm totally new to fermented foods so maybe il look for a health food store see of they have any .. thanks for sharing 👍 maybe show how to make it ? If you have already I. Sorry
I will preface by saying I’ve never had the luck to try proper kimchi. The only kimchi I’ve liked so far was the Biona one, I think you can get it in TESCOs. Hated the Yutaka one. Unfortunately I don’t have a Korean restaurant or shop close to where I live, but I’d love to have a crack at making my own
thank you for your service 🙏
That was very entertaining and glad you were doing the tasting not me. I'm going to have to try making it I can see.
Yukata one isn’t great when shipped but it is good when bought from a shop
I love vadasz, especially their super beets, it’s amazing. I’ve never tasted authentic kimchi, only store bought. Vadasz is my go to.
Thank you, mate
wait I like the 3rd one 😭 but then again I’ve never had real kimchi so idk
Ugh, the color of those kimchi are so off. Twinsbros is my favorite, but I always got good kimchi in South Korea too.
I like the vidasz kimchi
Thanks for sacrificing yourself for us
I've tried the one from Costco, it smells really bad, like bin juice, it so bad that the wife won't let me open the jar in the house
cheers!
Sun hee from tesco is the worst kimchi i ever eat . 😢
Waaachaaa
Yutaka kimchi is amazing though

Any chance you might do a video showing you making kimchi and provide the written instructions regarding ingredients and method below the video? And thank you so much for making the video above.
never tried kimchi in my life untill now as i bought a jar of baxters kimchi as that was the only kimchi they had and all i can say is what a pile of crap as its supposed to be spicy cabbage but it is hust as you said small bits that look like mush but its in date by a lot but its just looks like jalapenos when infact its radish but there are some green bits that look like jalapenos though none are in the ingrediants and some other red bits and vinegar but all you can taste is vinegar and not sweet just the cheapest hell cheap chip shop vinegar tastes better but it is not good at all just avoid
