  • This time of year I get a lot of questions regarding my traditional archery bowhunting setup. Questions like:
What kind of longbow or recurve to you shoot, what’s the draw weight for elk or deer, how heavy are your arrows, what’s FOC do you recommend, what kind of broadheads, etc.
This video will go over my bowhunting rig for this year. I’ll be chasing elk, whitetail deer, hogs, and anything else that I can. Additionally I’ll go over the stuff I carry with me in my Traditional Archery field kit. Here’s a quick rundown for later reference:
Bow square, fletching jig, fletchings, fletching glue, field tips, broadheads, tip glue, feather dry, extra bow string, string material, serving and serving tool, wood glue, torch, honing stone, nail polish, plyers, extra shooting tab or glove, extra clicker, point brush, and a few other things.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bowhunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

That is pretty awesome you have your moms old make up case, I love it. I wish I would have thought about that. You are correct, it makes for a much finer story than some old tool box. I like you, more than likely bring enough stuff to help my buddies as well. Last year I took a new hunter out, he had a borrowed crossbow, the limbs broke when he took his first shot, luckily for him, he till connected and it was a good quick harvest. He learned the importance of having a sharp knife. He showed me his new knife this past week, he is excited, hooked and hunting with a compound bow this year.
Excellent video as always sir. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed week.

Love this one Clay, my brother and a good friend of mine used to do the 3d tourneys years ago. We all had boxes full of repair supplies. Saved the weekend for many a bow hunter, through the years. Even made , on the spot Flemish strings , for compound replacement cables that took down deer, that weekend it was made. I've even had to feed and clothe some of these guys too. It was all worth it, thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Clay! I really like the fact you have your Mom's old makeup box! That's gotta bring some good-luck mojo huh? I have some old things like that that I cherish. Dads old tool kit, Grandpa's tackle box and my Uncles gun cleaning kit. They are all gone but their stuff lives on!

    Very Nice - as allways👍👍🙂
Love the nerdy part of bowhunting with bits and peaces of everything and so cool with a box with a story behind
    🙂
Just a little tip I got from another bowhunter: I allways bring a little braided fishing line 0.06-0.10 diameter, it's the best material I've ever used for serving a nock point if the nocks for some reason don't fit - and it's extremely strong along with a needle if you have to make a repair on clothing, bagpacks, boots whatever 🙂

I was watching and at one point you have brought a smile to my face when I heard you talking about dental floss.
Don't you have it for an artificial sinew when you want to tie above the arrow knock or to fix the tip in place?

Always a flint steel and some char of some kind. Maybe a few coffee filters. I found that melting bees wax with toilet ring wax makes the perfect consistency for a bow string. Just mix both equal parts. Hope you have many clean kills this season.

Quick question about your arrow weight. Ive been using carbon arrows and with a 100 gr field point they come in at 450 gr. For most of what I can find an ideal total arrow weight should be 450-500. You are pushing 600, does it matter that much? Should I get arrow inserts to up my weight to push closer to 550-600 and then, should I be practicing with arrows that heavy? Im fairly new to this.

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  3 года назад +1

depends on the game you're pursuing, the bow weight, and your goals. I'm hunting elk at close range. I'd personally try to get it above 500 grains.

Guys should stop worrying about gadgets & learn to actually shoot. Learn solid form & achieve Repeatable accuracy thru back tension.
