You never get a second chance to make a first impression, as the famous saying goes, and renderings are a key part of that for any stadium project. But beyond the often-delicate nature of local politics, renderings can also create an expectation among fans that is impossible to live up to and often isn’t even the ultimate intention.

The Texas Rangers are a key example here, as the initial renderings for Globe Life Field in 2017 showed a series of differences, albeit not drastic ones, from the completed stadium. When the facility opened in ’20, some criticism soon arrived, in part due to that divergence between original concept and final reality. But given initial renderings like the Rangers’ are typically done very near the beginning of a stadium development process-and usually well before any government approvals and final architectural drawings-some changes along the way are almost inevitable.
“A rendering is an idea of what a project can be, and how you sell that idea to the public or whatever authority you’re going before,” Ryan Sickman, head of the sports design practice for global architecture firm Gensler, tells FOS. “As you then fully dive into things and they become real, there are all sorts of factors that can come into play, including availability of materials, construction timetables, funding issues, what have you. In reality, something almost always gets changed. But the goal is still to reflect reality as much as possible.”

    Brodie,
I’d love to see a video of all the renderings of stadiums that were never built!

Renderings are also popping out up in college sports. Colleges have typically done renovations in sections. Now you are seeing some total rebuilds (Kansas football stadium) or brand new stadiums (Northwestern &800M football stadium or USF on campus football stadium). I am so rendered out between your channel and Depressed Gingers’s channel. We get excited seeing renderings until we realize they mainly used to ask for public funds. A’s are poster child of renderings that never came to fruition.

Renderings these days tell you the direction teams are going to raise revenue. For example NFL stadium are going away from retractable roofs and going with translucent roofs. This allows for the venue to generate more revenue by being able to be used for other events and taking the weather element out. In baseball where there are 81 games the my are going with Atlanta Braves “Battery” style development to keep people there before and after events.

In residential, when renderings meet the county or borough planning commissions, what you started out with usually is not what you end up with. Really cool projects get shelved because they met a Karen or Kyle on the board.
In sports it's always fun to see what teams dream up but kinda sad when nothing happens, Howard Terminal and Portland comes to mind.

I work in architecture, never trust renderings when the project hasn't even been submitted for permit yet. Structural and geotech engineers will invariably make short work of the artistic vision.

If people on minimum wage or welfare threatened the populations or cities/states like the billionaire sports team owners do they would be lucky to be arrested and sent to jail as opposed to having mobs of people come after them. To add to it the amount of "fans" of teams who will demand that the owners threats are met so that they can watch the teams that are making the threats who don't hesitate in crying poverty when tax money is being used for things that benefit everyone and you have a real bad situation. God forbid the back house staff ask for decent pay as the 'fans' would go ballistic with anger telling them that they should be happy to have a job at all.

Renderings mean nothing but a way for owners to con the public into helping pay for the places they don’t want to pay for themselves ..The renderings of the Vegas A’s opera house are a bigger joke than the organization itself ..No bullpens , no lights , giant window that looks into the setting sun ..Anyone who believes those are real needs to have their head examined ..Those renderings like most are stall tactics because owners don’t have the money or backing to get their project done ..These billionaire owners put these out to tease the fans and say if we don’t get this we may leave ..The public is getting wise to these scams and calling the bluff of these owners ..When people are struggling just to survive a shiny new stadium isn’t exactly what people are looking for .
