Awesome interview with Leah. I live in Utah, and we're obviously super excited to be getting a team. However, I feel for Leah and other Coyotes fans who have invested time, money, and emotion into a team that has been completely mismanaged by ownership. Hopefully that guy can get his crap together and you all can get another franchise and the Coyotes franchise can make a comeback in the next five years.

Taylor Swift's new song off her latest record "So long, London" (about leaving her long-term relationship) is another song (apart from "Anti-Hero") that could apply to this situation that could have very well been written by Gary Bettman (called "So Long, 'Zona"). Lines like: "I stopped CPR, after all it's no use, the spirit was gone, we would never come to...And you say I abandoned the ship, but I was going down with it...When you're not sure if he wants to be there...And I'm just mad as hell 'cause I loved this place for so long, 'Zona. Had a good run." Gary (like Taylor) stayed way longer than he should've (waiting for this franchise to get it's act together rather than waiting for a proposal).

Bettman is the one most responsible for the Coyotes plight over the last 20+ years. He knew Steve Ellman, the real estate developer who bought the team around 2001, was building the Westgate Entertainment district in Glendale.
Ellman claims that he tried to find an arena space in the East Valley area, but couldn't, even though he only spent about 6 months looking for a spot. It really seems Ellman always intended to build the area in the Westgate district in Glendale when he bought the team to help make the Westgate district a more attractive spot for retailers and restaurants as having an arena with a permanent sports teams means a more consistent flow of people coming to the Westgate district. This would also mean more money for Ellman's other businesses. Bettman should have stopped Ellman from building the stadium in Glendale and made him find a stadium spot in the East Valley. Bettman didn't, partly because Ellman had Wayne Gretzky as a partner, and Ellman cashed out his ownership of the team in 2006, leaving the Coyotes to rot in Glendale, 45-60 minutes from their main fan base.

If Meruelo didn't want to sell the team, I don't think Bettman could've forced him to as long as he was fulfilling his obligations as an owner. So the next best thing for Bettman was to guarantee him an expansion franchise with a 5 year window in return for agreeing to sell this current edition of the Coyotes. It works for Meruelo if he was in fact losing lots of money on the team each year - now he gets time to build a new arena, and if so, the Coyotes will re-enter the NHL.

I mean there are multiple players. I think the tipping point was the Yotes doing well. There was a point in January where the Yotes looked like a wild card. Smith and Gary both admit real conversations started in early February. Gary didn't want playoffs in Mullet. The governors all believe there is a chance Meruelo messes up the auction. Smith was heavy-handed in begging for a team. So the rumors get loud in February. The Yotes tank. Gary twists Meruelo's arm to sell to Smith. Gives conditions so Meruelo can't sue. Meruelo goes a long with it bc he'll be fine either way. Team get hot potatoed to Smith/SLC. Enough ducks are in a row for games to played in Utah. That said there are glaring issues. I think Smith thought he'd have another year. It's why he has pivoted from a new stadium to renovations. It's why he keeps saying "we won't be perfect".

I bet Meruelo moves the Roadrunners to Mullett. The Roadrunners will be Utah's AHL team from now on regardless of whether Meruelo gets an expansion franchise or not. In the meantime, he can have them play at Mullett to help keep hockey alive in Phoenix during this 5 year window. If he gets a new NHL team, he'll sell the Coyotes to Smith (bet the Roadrunners move to Provo or somewhere else.) and start a new AHL affiliate elsewhere If he doesn't get the NHL team, he can sell the team to Smith anyway since he'd be out of the NHL hockey business.

The stories that have come out would be outright laughable if they weren't true. Crossing off prices owed to hotels and writing in your own amount, like he was on Ebay looking at the "make an offer" button, or removing printers from coaches offices. Think Murello doomed the team when he couldnt come to an agreement with Gila. Just feel like if he was a better business man he would have been able to compromise with Gila. Mullet was too far and not having a new arena to move to when Gila called his bluff was a misstep, if you're going to pretend u have the better hand. The public didnt back up his poor plan/decision.

Keep an eye on the land auction, it's been reported by local media that the Coyotes had no opposition for the land until the team was relocated. This is now a "hot" property and watch out if the Dbacks make a move for the property, the work that Murelo did gives the Dbacks an oppotunity to replace Chase Field which it's lease ends in 2027. The auction is not solely based on highest bid, it's also based on the best use of the land connected to the bid, a baseball stadium/ent. district for an existing team may have a higher value than a hockey arena/ent. district for an in-active hockey team. It would also end Murelos chances of getting a new facility built in the 5 year window and the NHL could work in 2029 with a new group for an arena and possibly use the Glendale Arena as the bridge...so 2031-33 a new team in AZ.

Yall proved that hockey is not watched in the desert, you couldnt even sell out a 6000 seat arena for home games. Boohoo, thousands of people lost their jobs in Winnipeg back then too. Support your team or loose it and quit your winning and crying.

Well, I glean from this interview that Leah is anti-Meruelo - as are 85% of people in Arizona. Still scratching my head at all the vitriol. The team he bought was a shit sandwich. You can call it Nutella, and keep selling it as is, or you have to toss it all in the garbage and start all over again. Yep, the team has sucked. But who's fault is that? Suckage was in the DNA of this team. If you wanna blame people, start with Ellman. He was the one that bungled Los Arcos, and dragged the team out to perpetual failure, aka Glendale. I do like the fact however that Leah clarified something a lot of us have been saying the whole time. It wasn't Glendale not getting paid that started that fire out there at the Desert Dumpster. It was that Glendale was trying to extort the Coyotes into an unfavorable long-term lease...Headscratcher. Nobody, and I mean nobody, ever brings up Veterans Coliseum as a third option. 13.7k for ice hockey. Downtown Phoenix. 15 minutes from Tempe and 20 from Scottsdale in light traffic. The Roadrunners played there for years. It opened in 1965, so it's the same age as the Oakland Coliseum, but I can attest that it's in way better shape than the Last Dive Bar. The State Fair maintains it pretty well. Same design as the Saddledome. Not optimal, but it would have been a far better bridge facility than either the Mullett or the Desert Dumpster. For my part, I would've done the same thing as Meruelo in leaving Glendale...

Not sure why mulrelo get all the hate. He's had miss steps but name a newer owner who hasn't. He was also delt a bad hand by previous owners. Had a bad team in an area that wouldn't work, city wanted a long term deal still. Couldn't move back downtown as the Sun's owner wouldn't share a building, no other real good options for a building. Tried for a privately financed areans in Tempe but Nimbys won out. He was delt a bad hand from day one and he just couldn't right the ship in a market that's not the strongest

    • @patricklawless5644

Meruelo gets all the hate because he's bad at building relationships. He's a poor communicator. He's not good at making people feel welcome or important. He comes off as defensive and petty.
Yes, he bought into a bad situation and had some bad luck, but he also positioned the franchise in a way that made them vulnerable.
There's lots of reasons and plenty of blame to go around when it comes to why the Coyotes aren't in the Valley anymore.

Everyone else could see this coming from a mile away and this was way overdue this is not the same as Oakland. Arizona was given chance after chance after chance after chance to right the ship against the better judgement of many because Gary was so stubborn in his support for Phoenix (he was going to let them play in a 5 000 seat barn for the forseeable future when you have NHL ready arenas in Kansas City and Quebec and even junior rinks in Canada with double/triple that capacity).
