I bought a hunk of abused land, picked up all the garbage and planted pounds of clover and daikon radishes. Then I started planting trees and I only mow paths. I'm entering year five and it keeps getting better.
Somebody who plays as well as Croce makes a John Denver campfire song with the lyrical depth of Leonard Cohen. Too bad I won't be around to see the twilight of Jesse's career. This will be a legacy folks!
I am a tree hugger, I believe that we are all related, we are connected to everything in the universe. I left Southern California at age 20, so I could like in the Redwoods in Mendocino, I was so happy. At age 29, my husband and I relocated to his family’s hometown in the San Juan Islands, so we could be surrounded by trees and ocean and blue skies. I remember telling our first son that trees are part of God just as we are. He didn’t comprehend until I got some Alan Watts tapes, he and my two younger sons listened to Watts and it formed their early relationships with trees. I feel trees are holy. They are rooted deep in the earth, and they reach for the sun. This is my new favorite Welles song, right up there with Whales 🐋
California Redwoods ❤️, the tall California eucalyptus -the giant weeping willow and apple trees on Grandmas' farm in Michigan...the olive, almond, persimmon, and walnut trees of Chico, CA, dropping their nuts on sidewalk and grass for me gather and enjoy, the "paper trees" in the MI forest, we would peel their bark as kids, write, draw, color, on the peelings...I even like the "gumball" trees of NC, hard on bare feet 😁, the squirrels would throw them at my barking GS, Rocko, and he'd bust them open, eat the meaty centers, ( the gumball, not the squirrels)😊... And I love trees, and the birds that flit, fly, from limb to limb, following me on my walks...and as always, love the whistling... 😁
trees have got it all figured out. They don't take nothing but sunlight, they give us fruit. They stand in one place, firm and strong, for their whole lives. They reach for the sky. I wish I could be a tree.

I happily extend to you, Jesse Welles, one of the highest forms of praise that -- I think -- one human being can extend to another, aside from tributes to those who have sacrificed life, limb, or have deeply suffered to protect others (perhaps the latter applies): You, a great human being, offering others comfort, respite, poignancy, and connected experience, is becoming or are, through your gift of song, a JEN-YOU-WINE spokesperson of light, a once in a generation beacon for we generations present in these very strange times. In other words, thank you for your existence.
Aww so nice to hear him sing about something he loves. I love his anti capitalist songs and to also hear his appreciation for the natural world he always sings in. What a legend
Nice to see Jesse in high spirits. His performance at Farm Aid was awesome, and it looks like he's on a roll, with another tune that just shows again that powerful music can be childs play. Especially for him.
Welp.. the “like” button just doesn’t cut it on this one Jesse. Damn I love your style and perspective. I’ve been an arborist for about 30 years and a wanna be song writer all my life. This one hits home and I thank you dearly for being who you are ❤ !
another great song for kids, like Bugs! Fred Rogers would have loved to have you sing on his show. I am a 70 year old kid and I love this new song, also love trees. the guitar lick and whistling break in this song is just sweet. Thanks again Jesse !
I just hope that when fame comes along and grabs you, as I'm sure it will, you don't lose any of the magic and beauty you manifest while singing in the weeds! An amazing artist! Be well!
My favorite tree right now is the elderly aspen in my backyard because in spite of clinging to life and being partly dead, for the last 3 years I've seen a downy woodpecker raise a chick from a humble hole in the trunk. Now I see the baby that was running its parents ragged with insatiable hunger eating from the suet bird feeders by my window. Good job, wood peckers, thank you, tree.
I’m astounded with how quickly you can come up with a tune. Not only that but in this one you straight from a whistle of a melody into picking out the rest of it. Maybe it just comes naturally to you with the witty lyricism, but I find it very impressive. You’re a real musician friend
My favorite tree is the eastern white cedar, where I live they form these dense mossy wetlands. They have a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi which help them communicate and send warnings between trees in the stand. Also there is typically one larger, older tree which is "the mother tree" which helps provide nutrients for growing trees around the mother. There is nothing like the ecosystem, there is something holy about it.

Thanks again as always for write'n tunes that overflow with common sense and solid judgement. Your no doubt the right man for the job. Carry on brother.....your my #1 tube guy. ron
As much as I love trees, most of the air we breath is from algae in the ocean. Most logging operations, in the USA, replant after harvest. I wish they would wait longer between harvest, average 10-20 years depending on the type of tree, and stop cutting old growth.
My favourite tree is the Common Yew. It's not found in the U.S., but is plentiful where I come from. The berries are beautiful, but toxic. A grouping them makes an excellent place to slow down and watch the world go by. Cheers, Jesse. Much love to you.
