trees have got it all figured out. They don't take nothing but sunlight, they give us fruit. They stand in one place, firm and strong, for their whole lives. They reach for the sky. I wish I could be a tree.

I happily extend to you, Jesse Welles, one of the highest forms of praise that -- I think -- one human being can extend to another, aside from tributes to those who have sacrificed life, limb, or have deeply suffered to protect others (perhaps the latter applies): You, a great human being, offering others comfort, respite, poignancy, and connected experience, is becoming or are, through your gift of song, a JEN-YOU-WINE spokesperson of light, a once in a generation beacon for we generations present in these very strange times. In other words, thank you for your existence.
Aww so nice to hear him sing about something he loves. I love his anti capitalist songs and to also hear his appreciation for the natural world he always sings in. What a legend
"We all travel the milky way together, trees and men; but it never occurred to me until this storm-day, while swinging in the wind, that trees are travelers, in the ordinary sense. They make many journeys, not very extensive ones, it is true; but our own little comes and goes are only little more than tree-wavings - many of them not so much." -John Muir
I am a tree hugger, I believe that we are all related, we are connected to everything in the universe. I left Southern California at age 20, so I could like in the Redwoods in Mendocino, I was so happy. At age 29, my husband and I relocated to his family’s hometown in the San Juan Islands, so we could be surrounded by trees and ocean and blue skies. I remember telling our first son that trees are part of God just as we are. He didn’t comprehend until I got some Alan Watts tapes, he and my two younger sons listened to Watts and it formed their early relationships with trees. I feel trees are holy. They are rooted deep in the earth, and they reach for the sun. This is my new favorite Welles song, right up there with Whales 🐋
My favorite tree right now is the elderly aspen in my backyard because in spite of clinging to life and being partly dead, for the last 3 years I've seen a downy woodpecker raise a chick from a humble hole in the trunk. Now I see the baby that was running its parents ragged with insatiable hunger eating from the suet bird feeders by my window. Good job, wood peckers, thank you, tree.
Nice to see Jesse in high spirits. His performance at Farm Aid was awesome, and it looks like he's on a roll, with another tune that just shows again that powerful music can be childs play. Especially for him.
Love it. I named a band "Tree" once. Every idea is like a seed that can grow into something beautiful. Much like your song here. Thanks for your music and words!
He's back!! Hope Farm Aid was a good experience & glad you've safely returned to the Ozarks! I haven't listened to this song yet, but I've been pretty fixated on the trees this week, too! Was practicing IDing the various kinds of Oaks by their different leaf shapes on the way back to the homestead this morning. I didn't realize there are so many different kinds just on our mountain alone! Plants are the coolest!!! 🤓🌳🍃🍂
Welp.. the “like” button just doesn’t cut it on this one Jesse. Damn I love your style and perspective. I’ve been an arborist for about 30 years and a wanna be song writer all my life. This one hits home and I thank you dearly for being who you are ❤ !
Shout out to the mighty basswood, which grows native around here. Straight tall and beautiful, almost driven to extinction because it was perfect for ship’s masts. One old one preserved nearby must be 150+ years old, several metres around and stretched up to the heavens.
Sounds like a fella inspired to be singing a happy song about something so easily taking for granted. Always remind my kids if they ever get so wise to think they know all about evrythin, take a walk outside and try and name the first 10 trees ya see and pretty soon you'll have forgot what ya wuz wurryd abowt.
I’m astounded with how quickly you can come up with a tune. Not only that but in this one you straight from a whistle of a melody into picking out the rest of it. Maybe it just comes naturally to you with the witty lyricism, but I find it very impressive. You’re a real musician friend
another great song for kids, like Bugs! Fred Rogers would have loved to have you sing on his show. I am a 70 year old kid and I love this new song, also love trees. the guitar lick and whistling break in this song is just sweet. Thanks again Jesse !
Deep! I appreciate the sentiment...I wialk through my property most days and lay a hand on the trees and have a little conversation with them and thank them for their shade and pretty leaves etc
My favourite tree is the Common Yew. It's not found in the U.S., but is plentiful where I come from. The berries are beautiful, but toxic. A grouping them makes an excellent place to slow down and watch the world go by. Cheers, Jesse. Much love to you.
My favorite tree is the eastern white cedar, where I live they form these dense mossy wetlands. They have a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi which help them communicate and send warnings between trees in the stand. Also there is typically one larger, older tree which is "the mother tree" which helps provide nutrients for growing trees around the mother. There is nothing like the ecosystem, there is something holy about it.

I grew up in em , and have tasted all their fruit , and I've watched em decimated by huge logging operations.....where is the rationale in that? I know we need wood , but it's really sad to watch em become a driving force for greed. Think about what's goin on in the Amazon river basin , and where we actually get most of the very air we breath!!!! Sorry buddy , you kinda hit a nerve with me here.....but I'm really glad that you've written about em. One day in the future we may just see some o these greed laden fools swinging from em. As much as I love trees, most of the air we breath is from algae in the ocean. Most logging operations, in the USA, replant after harvest. I wish they would wait longer between harvest, average 10-20 years depending on the type of tree, and stop cutting old growth.

My ancestors used to bury folks with a tree’s seed in their mouths for pretty much this reason.
Some trees have torns, sap nutrients from soil and damage sewer pipes.

Trees turn sunlight into matter, that's pretty cool
Close but not quite, they use the energy from sunlight to rearrange matter into trees!
@@brettanial It does feel that way though because doesn't much of the matter come from the air?
@@brettanial Matter is a product of energy. Light is energy.
That’s because they take the energy from the sun and divide it by the speed of light squared. Just like Einstein said .
