'Honor Killings' Trial: Yaser Said takes stand in his own defense, denies killing daughters

- Through an interpreter Yaser Said says he "for sure did not" kill his daughters Sarah and Amina. He is facing capital murder charges in their 2008 deaths.
A Dallas jury unanimously found Yaser Said guilty of killing his two teen daughters, Sarah and Amina Said.
Judge Chika Anyiam sentenced Said to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Prosecutors said Said, a native of Egypt, was angry that his daughters were dating and that the boys were not Muslim. They claim in a 911 call from the night of the murders, Sarah said her father was attacking her.
Said's defense attorney said he will be filing a notice to appeal.

In every video that he recorded of his daughters, we can hear him communicating with them in English. This is ridiculous. He doesn't need the interpreter. He is using this as a strategy to make himself look more vulnerable.

He was married to Patricia for 30 years, who only spoke English. How did they communicate for 3 decades? His son and daughters only spoke English, how did they communicate? This Arabic interpreter is another proof that he is fake.
Look at it this way - he can't use the language card as grounds for an appeal. While I'm convinced that he feigned ignorance about his knoweldge of the English language, having an interpreter will diminish any doubt as to whether he understood what was going on.

What a manipulator. He speaks English but is using an interpreter so the jurors don’t catch him in a lie based on his story or mannerisms. The interpreter is like a shield for him to hide behind. He can easily blame the interpreter for any inconsistencies in his story. Keep in mind his daughter called 911 as he was killing her and told the operator her dad shot her.
The court provides the interpreters. He doesn't choose to have one.

I agree he's a manipulator. PErhaps he's hiding behind her, but it's not her fault or doing--it's his. They have interpreters there to help them understand words they might not know, and so, if they take the stand, they either speak all in English, or only in their native language.
I'm not an expert, I've just seen this done in other trials.

live in the united states since 1983 and work as a taxi driver in new york and ask for an interpreter in court, the prosecutor ask him if he was an american citizen because to have citizenship you will have to speak english
Pretty sure it's so he can't claim something was unfair because he didn't "understand" something. So no grounds for any mistrial based on that far fetched attempt. I believe judge is just covering all the bases
I thought the same thing. When he gets caught in his bold-face lie, he will say I did not say that and the interpreter is being paid by the state and lied on him. After being asked to speak into the mic, his answers can still not be heard. Also using the interpreter as a shield. I agree 100 percent to disquise his lack of remorse, guilt, and ineptitude as a liar. Although, he thinks he is a master liar and everyone from the Judge, prosecutor and jury can be bent to his will and wrapped around his little finger.
The interpreter should not be sitting so close to him but at a distance talking into the mic to question him- then he would have to answer audibly and clearly into the mic so that both his words & the translator can be recorded properly. I don’t like this whispering like this is a parent/teacher conference.
This is one of the most open and shut cases. Even his daughter Sarah’s dying words were “my dad shot me”
The fact he’s even testifying shows his narcissism. And using an interpreter when we heard him on the tapes speak English and know he worked as a taxi driver is just more manipulation on his part.

Their mother needs to be charged right along with him. The daughters were terrified of him, he had been abusing them for years and the mom finally left him only to go right back to him and back to the abuse and eventual murder. It’s nauseating.

Child endangerment at the very least. Here in the uk, if a parent is aware the other parent or step parent is abusing a child they get charged and prison time too. Usually I've seen it for younger children but I'd like to think it would be the same if this was in uk. I watched a documentary about this several years ago, I signed a petition to have the mum arrested. He needs to be slaughtered the same way he slaughtered his beautiful daughters. I get so angry. We have so many honour killings in the uk. Some areas now have specific honour killing sections within the police.

I was furious when I seen that too, but I clicked on the live stream and from what I understood the judge wanted him to have an interpreter because his accent is so strong they didn’t want it to get transcribed incorrectly for the records. Something along those lines lol. Regardless this is annoying. I can’t wait for cross examination

The mother should be charged with child endangerment at the very least. Here in the uk, if a parent is aware the other parent or step parent is abusing a child they get charged and prison time too. It happens too much in the UK, in certain cases over here, the communities closed ranks. He should have been charged with statutory rape of his wife and her parents of illiciting it for passing a 15yr old over to a 29 Yr old man. That right there proves that he felt free to act customs that we find abhorrent in the West. He beat her and abused her and shaped her as a Muslim wife. After the murders, their son started doing the same thing. She probably knew where he was, she lived with his family. I think her disposition was almost childlike. She was.reluctant to talk.about the abuse until pressed. I wonder if his family still contact her. She definitely holds some responsibility. She said part of her knew. Her instincts must have been screaming and she ignored them

The interpreter is being used so that he can't claim mistrial later on due to understanding/speaking english poorly. Arabic is his natural language, english is not. No matter how well he speaks it.
I remember watching a documentary about these girls years ago. In that doc, there were clips of a few home video footage taken by the father of his family. There were 2 clips that disturbed me. One was where he was filming one of his daughters trying to sleep while he was pulling the covers off revealing her in her undies. He made a remark about her body (don’t remember exact words) that I remember being so grotesque cuz it felt sexual in nature. I thought to myself that a father should never compliment his daughter body in that way. Another video was of him filming the daughter with the light eyes and he was getting a close up of her face and kept saying how beautiful her green eyes were, over and over. I got the feeling that these girls were being SA’d. I feel heartbroken that these girls were subjected to such abuse in their lives. The father deserves to be beat and his life ended

So many reports heavily suggest SA on his part with. One of the boyfriends also shared that she confessed both sexual and physical abuse from the father, physical/verbal abuse from the brother, and compliance/complacency from the mother. It’s all terrible! I pray they get their justice tenfold.

I once sat in on a jury panel for a case many years ago. I don't know what triggered the judge from jump. However, at the outset of the case the judge asked the plaintive how long has he owned the property in question. Answer: "30 years". Next question, How long have you been in this country? Answer: " 45 years".
At that point the plaintive was told he didn't need an interpreter and he immediately ordered the dismissal of the interpreter from the court proceedings.
This is called "Lying by Proxy".
He ferls that he isn't telling any lies if he feeds them to the intrepreter and "She" is the one telling it to the Court.

I might be wrong but Is it possible they're having him speak his native language so there's no mistrial? He could later state that he didn't understand what was being asked of him if he was asked in English.
I believe you have to take an English test in order to take the citizenship test, and since he was a naturalized citizen, I’m going to assume him asking for an interpreter is a gimmick. Even if there was no interpreter and everything was asked and responded to in English, there would be no chance of a mistrial on the basis of him misunderstanding. There’s too much evidence that he can speak and understand English.

Speaking a language in everyday life is easier than the language of the law. He can't say he doesn't understand as it is spoken in his language

They both need to speak clearly into the microphone so that if there’s any question as to the accuracy of translation at any point, everything can be clearly verified. I’m surprised the court isn’t more stringent on this. It’s like everyone knows he’s toast anyway.

I'm so glad he decided to testify because his story is so ludicrous everyone would see right through it. He thought there was Assassin's possibly following him so he decided to leave the car with his daughters, and let them argue amongst themselves and handle whatever situation they were going through it alone. Yet, he thought they were all being followed by somebody that wanted to kill him so he decided to get out of the car let them go their own way. Even though they couldn't even go to the bathroom without him watching. Like anyone would actually believe any of this nonsense? Thankfully he decided to take the stand because he's such a narcissistic psychopath. And he actually thought people would believe him. And I'm glad he using interpreter because it made it even harder for him to explain the stupid story. Even though we all know he knows how to speak English. I work as an ESL teacher, and although I think this guy is a complete monster it is possible he can’t speak English that well anymore. The videos of him speaking in English were taken over 10-12 years ago. If he has been living out of the country and not talking in English he more than likely forgot how to speak in English at a high level. Of course he may be able to still understand basic sentences, but probably doesn’t have the ability to express himself at an advanced level. Most ESL learners can completely lose a language they were fluent in if they go longer than 3 years without practicing.

His son can speak Arabic though. How do we know they weren’t communicating in Arabic all those years. Plus he was with his brother too who is a native Arabic speaker. He probably did forget English seeing as he was only talking to his son, brother and maybe some male relatives in Egypt.
