    I've never hit time and time again at 1.2 EVER!!! In combination with the Sony eye af, the Sigma 35 f1.2 ART crushes. They said 1.2 couldn't be done on a Sony E-Mount....well, it's been done and it changes everything, or something . If they made this lens for the Nikon Z mount, I would own it right now. Don't forget to download the sample RAW files.

      Jared that lens is awesome. I would like to see it being used with video. I'm currently looking into more prime lenses for creating video and this at a 1.2 which blows out the background is great. Can you review this lens but instead for photographers do it for filmmakers?

      Jared, whats your experience. Are Sigma Art Lenses with canon EF Mount are works as good as native lenses on the Sonys ? In Terms of focus, speed and everything?!
      I am a canon shooter and heavily invested in ef glass, but it becomes harder and harder to wait for a Eos R PRO Body and not think about a switch to a sony like the a7iii or even the a9 ...but of course work with my existing ef glass lineup.

      incumbent vs emerging technologies. you see it happen over and over again. when a new technology comes, we compare the half baked tech to the existing, well developed and reliable tech. what you should be doing is comparing the potential of the new technology, when it gets improved, to the old technology. dslrs kept improving functions that were already way better than users needed. mirrorless offered something they just couldnt compete against.

    Many of the latest sigma lenses released in both e-mount and L-mount. These mount of this lenses can be changed by Sigma with an extra cost. For example if you have an e-mount camera with various Sigma e-mount lenses and decide to pass to L-mount cameras you won't miss the previous e-mount lenses.
    Nearly all lenses follow a compromise between weight, size, optical quality, autofocus performance (except manual ones) and above all price. Sigma with the Art series decided to differentiate from other lens manufacturers and didn't compromise with size and weight. That allowed better optical quality with large apertures at reasonable price and autofocus performance.
    The heavier and larger lenses of the Sigma ART series for various mounts is indeed a disadvantage but at the end most photographers appreciate more the optical quality.

    Hi Jared, great review. Terrific lens, very nice images (especially of the little guy). I have to say one thing though, I'm shocked at the amount of ISO noise in the A7Riv images. If I saw those images without knowing what camera they were from, I'd definitely be guessing an APS-C camera.
    Keep up the great work.

    • @phillipnichols4859
      @phillipnichols4859 5 лет назад +1

      I agree. From what I understand, that's because having so many megapixels creates way more noise in low light. Have you downloaded the sample images? Because I'm guessing some of it has to do with the compression to fit the image into video resolution. But I haven't checked yet...

    Good job, Jared. You’re right about how difficult it is to get tack sharp on the eyes at f 1.2 with the Canon 50 1.2. It’s certainly possible, of course, but not easy, and definitely not as easy to get as you made it look with this lens. I have no doubt that the RF lens could do it more easily, but as you alluded to, it’s also about the camera. If you watch Julia Trotti’s videos, or Jessica Kobeissi, or Irene Rudnyk, they will shoot their Canon 50 1.2 occasionally at 1.2, but more often at f 2.0, just because of how difficult it can be

    It really wouldn't be such an issue that the aperture ring doesn't have a lock if the ring _turned heavily enough._ Seriously. They could do with learning from 1980s and prior Nikon. It's impossible to turn the rings on their old lenses by accident. They got it right with putting it way at the back of the lens where it belongs, but they apparently need to work on the weight of the ring. Maybe make the ring a bit smaller, too.

    My review of the lens. It's a beast. You'd think. Oh, I won't move that aperture ring that much. I'll easily avoid it. I just did a shoot with it. I had to reset the ring at least 4 to 5 times. It definitely moves and if you don't pay attention, it could mess you up a lot. Luckily I had the Sony A7iii, so I could see how the image would look through my viewfinder or else I would have never noticed I accidentally moved the aperture ring. I don't mind the weight... But I do mind the humidity. That plus the weight if the camera will slow you down and drain you. I'm not super fit, but I'm in decent shape. The added weight in your bag will definitely be noticeable

      Canon isn't winning any races. They might sell more, but it's one company constantly falling from a plateau they reached a decade ago compared to one that's going up every single year (Sony). As it is Sony will overtake them in sales sooner rather than later, and once that happens they'll have to catch up with a company that makes every single component in their cameras, both hardware and software, and is years ahead in every single technical regard from sensor technology to AF. Even the ridiculous _"color science"_ blind tests show people like Sony colors better than Canon, and that's been a supposed advantage of Canon since digital cameras became a thing.

Just the other day I was thinking if I should trade my Sigma 35 1.4, in order to buy the new Sony 35 1.8. I found that because of it's weight I only use that lens professionally, at weddings in dark conditions. I can say, after more than one year of use that the focusing on the Sigma 1.4 works a little bit better that the Sony 85 1.8 that I own as well. The only time that I encountered small issues with the focusing was at very close distance to the subject the AF would be by a very tiny bit off, but that was before the firmware update that came for the lens.

    Great lens. You captured some cute candids. Sony needs to put that 61mp sensor in the a9. If that is their flagship, it should have the speed and the resolution. The images off the mark 4 were so sharp, it was very close to medium format. Can't wait for Sigma fp review. 👍

    • @stuartschaffner9744
      @stuartschaffner9744 5 лет назад +1

      For many years, my day job was software development. From my perspective, the A9 is groundbreaking because of the speed and power of its internal processing, including the speed of its internal data buses. This is why the A9 contains a 3-layer sandwich consisting of the sensor chip connected to an image processing chip through a layer of high-conductivity copper wires. Otherwise the A9 is most likely almost the same as the other A cameras. As you can see from the price, this sensor-processor sandwich is almost certainly expensive. If you double the pixel count, you double the data-transfer and processing speed requirements, since the objects you are trying to recognize and track aren't moving any slower. I suspect that this is why the Nikon Z7 is so slow to track and autofocus compared to the Z6.
      As a wildlife photographer, 24 megapixels is just fine for me. The big wildlife primes, like the 600mm f/4, could in theory generate a 40 or 50 megapixel image if shot wide open with perfect focusing. If the A9ii were any slower than the A9 I wouldn't even consider replacing my old A9. Even the biggest lens will give a blurry image if it is focusing on where a flying bird was 1/10 second ago. For anything slower-moving than flying feathered dinosaurs or major-league ball players, all that processing power would usually be a waste of money.

      @SuperVokan 5 лет назад +1

      The Keto Life I read somewhere, maybe SAR, they’re saying that the a9ii may have like 32 or 36mps which’s isn’t a bad idea since, it would allow sport/wildlife photographers to have some cropping space but also allow the camera to deliver/unload to the SD at a 20+FPS
      I mean, the A7R had originally 36mps, which I wished my Sony a7iii had but who knows maybe in the mark 4?

    Canon and Nikon both took stabs at SONY saying larger lens mounts can enable more sophisticated optics like f/1.2 (and beyond) lenses. Everyone assumed it wasn't possible for the smaller e-mount but SONY said that's not how optics work....it's nice to see this actually coming true although it's a third party company beating SONY to the f/1.2 aperture lenses.

    • @LordArioh
      @LordArioh 5 лет назад +2

      yeah, severely compromising on size and weight everything is possible. Tho I wonder what's the actual t-stop of this lens.

    • @bryanescalante2871
      @bryanescalante2871 5 лет назад

      @@LordArioh about T/1.3 or T/1.4... Also a lens F stop is mostly determined by the front glass diameter with a fraction or ratio of the aperture blades... Not the mount size heck there's even 0.95 on D mounts cameras ...

      Most likely yes but only after they have backwards engineered the AF for the Z mount system

  • @HesselFolkertsma

    Canon and Nikon are both idiots, for not openly sharing their mount-specifications. Really gives third party lens manufacturers less incentives to develop for RF and Z mount. Especially with their much smaller market-share.

    • @jeffluo9591
      @jeffluo9591 5 лет назад

      People choose Canon or Nikon for their brand value. The brand itself carries weight. Who would want a second brand lens on their beloved Canon body, or Nikon. You wouldn't use a third party lens on a Leica either. It all about the brand, the logo, the letters.

    • @HesselFolkertsma
      @HesselFolkertsma 5 лет назад

      Jeff Luo - that would have been true in the past, back when Tamron and Sigma were considered inferior budget-options. But in the current climate, I‘m seeing many of our customers choosing Sigma Art lenses over Canon L or Nikon G. Makes sense too, photographers generally make less money than 10-20 years ago. Need more bang for their buck.

    Size 10 Soles, sorry I know you sent me a message about color profiling but I can't find it. There seems to be a problem with RUclips's notification mechanism. I'm not 100% certain I understand your point and I apologize for that. It seems that you are saying that the automatic color toning in some cameras gives you colors that you like better than what Sony provides. The methods I described on how to get the most accurate toning out of any camera is an applied form of "color science". I gave you some references to research this further if you want.
    I believe that what you are saying is that if you use the default settings on other brands of cameras then you get color tonings you prefer without any use of color toning during processing. If so, that's great. The camera you use should be a tool to produce the results you like most. By all means choose your camera on that basis. This is especially true if you insist on shooting JPEG, whose 8-bit color depth makes color toning very difficult. However, if you or a client ever wants a different toning later, then you too will have to look into how to change that in post processing. The place where I would disagree is if you imply that your own preferences are "correct" and a product of "color science", whereas anybody else's are incorrect and unscientific. The art world is a big place and there is a lot of room for individual taste.
    I will add that Fujifilm's default JPEG color toning is different in the reds. I believe this comes from the fact that Fujifilm was originally a film company and produced a very popular film brand called Velvia. The chemicals and dyes used in this film made its reds different from, say, Kodachrome. I remember using Velvia film myself many years ago and liking it. I believe that some of the color toning packages these days offer a "velvia look". This is what I have heard, but Fuji users are welcome to provide better information if they have it. Good luck and hope this helps!

    When reviewing such fast lenses an estimate on the transmission performance would be valuable. I understand that not everyone is equipped with measuring T stops, but a qualitative comparison with to say the 35/1.4 art would be informative. Many I am sure are interested in such a beast for its low light capabilities and it would be super interesting what we gain wide open for the extra money. Thank you for the awesome review anyway!
