If I didn’t already own the GM I would by the Sigma definitely. Like when I bought their 24-70mm Art, there’s no way I was spending more on the GM for similar or in some aspects lower performance than the lens half the price. For Sony to make the GM buyable again they’ll need to lower the price of the GM (not going to happen) or remake it into an 85mm f1.2 GM that’s sharper but keeps or even improves the already beautiful rendering of the current lens.
Aside from the sharpness aspect, maybe I'm seeing things. Even though the settings are the same, I think the Sigma produced slightly warmer tones as well. To me, this is just as important in a portrait lens. Granted, you can color correct, but it's nice to get that result without taking the extra step. Am I imagining the difference?
@Gap I guess everyone missed the part where I said "you can color correct" But after a while, those minutes add up. All things being equal, the Sigma renders warmer tones which is what I like for a portrait lens. Is that all right?

I own a few art lenses including the magnetic 105 1.4 and love them. With that said, sharp bokeh is not a desirable thing. It becomes a distraction. I believe Sony intentionally kept that lense soft as it is more desirable for portraits.

Since the Sigma doesn’t seem to AF any better than the Sony GM (which is a bit disappointing in that regard), I think I might have to hold out for the Sony 85 1.2 GM 😉
I wish there was more focus on rendering rather than how sharp lenses are. While sigma lenses are sharp the images produced are flat. There’s more to photography than pixel peeping. The drawing of an image overall should be what’s most important. No client zooms in 300% to see how sharp a microscopic detail is.
@@BryanKeithPhoto What I mean by flatness is a sense of dimensionality to the rendering. Some people call it micro contrast or 3d pop. While post processing can enhance the dimensionality of a photo it's not something you can really create. It's down to lens design.
@@shang-hsienyang1284 to my eye Sigma lenses don't render with a sense of dimensionality. It's a very clinical look. Just my preference for aesthetics. Sigma does make great glass. For me personally, sigma lenses are more suited for landscape photography. For portraiture and street, I'd use zeiss, voigtlander, leica (way out of my price range lol), older Nikon, and good vintage glass. 7artisans, TTartisans and some other cheap Chinese lenses have tend to have that classical dimensional rendering as well.
I have the HSM version. I guess I have to carry that extra weight for all eternity. By the way, the original HSM version is also sharper than the GM, it was the reason why I bought it 2 years ago over the GM.
I was expecting Sigma to outperform the Sony, but I'm in awe that Sony's own lenses aren't extracting the most optimal AF performance. I would buy into the Sony system JUST for the wonderful Sigma glass that seemingly pairs so well with them.
Slower shutter speeds have more vibration, in-camera non stabalized vibration that can make the shot blury. The issue is not a focus issue at lower shutter speeds. It is the mechanical shutter having more vibration at lower shutter speeds.
I REALLY hope Sigma is able to get these out for RF soon. My 14-24 for Canon EF was an excellent, albeit HUGE, wide angle zoom-it was a poor match mounted on the EOS R. As a Canon user, I'm very jealous of the Sigma FF mirrorless lenses like the aforementioned 14-24 and this 85 1.4.
After watching this review… I need some additional details in order to be able to make an *informed* decision: - To what degree is this lens able to withstand the elements, especially compared to the Sony one? - Is this lens compatible with the Lens Compensation functions [aberration corrections, taking care of vignetting, chromatic aberrations and distortions *in-camera!]* in the Sony cameras? I would also keep in mind that while native lenses can be adjusted and updated while mounted on the camera, for the Sigma *the Sigma USB Dock is needed, which is a separate purchase - let alone that it is something extra to learn how to use and take care of!* I wonder why *precious few, if anybody at all* ever mention anything of this in reviews - especially on RUclips!
In terms of focusing the GM85 is really dated. This becomes very apparent when compared to the GM24 or GM135. Those are the lens that the sigma’s focusing speed and accuracy should be compared to. I’m hoping Sony will refresh the 85 to current GM performance.
I already pre-ordered the Sigma for the L MOUNT ALLIANCE!! Fast primes are lacking for my S1 right now and this one looks like a winner for sure. I like the size too.
Great video really appreciate the lengths you go to especially to get a 2nd Copy of the lens to exclude you having a dudd copy brilliant loving the sigma 50 mm1.4 art on the R6 👍👍
Recently I sold all my Canon camera/lenses and then switched to Sony because there are not many RF lenses and all are very expensive. It was painful decision because I used Canon since EOS 5. Now I have 2 Sigma lenses, 35mm f2 and 85mm f1.4 dg dn, I really happy with them, 85 is my all day lens.
Love your work Jared! Yet again another very informative review 👏🏼 I’ve always been in favor of native glass. But man Jared & Sigma, you may have persuaded me! Amazing lens and that saving 😳 Good job Sigma!
Thank you so much Jared for the detailed comparison, did you tell that in slower shutter speeds A7R IV has issue in focusing? I'm interested to buy one but I have concerns! Will be grateful if you could help me. Thank you so much and God bless you!
I have the gm and recently rented the sigma. Yes the sigma is sharper but the look of the bokeh on the Sony is more softer/nicer. I find the swirly bokeh on the sigma distracting. The sigma not only weighs less but it also feels well balanced on my a7r4.
Could it be something to do with the IBIS being on? Maybe it interacts with the sony a bit differently than the sigma, and I've heard something about IBIS messing up tripod shot sharpness.
I just bought the Sony lens two weeks ago. I have shot about 90 pictures with it. I wish I saw this video earlier. I liked the dxomark review of this lens. The next lens I hope to purchase is the lensbaby velvet 56mm 1.6. But I enjoyed your review just the same. Keep up the good work!
Where is the new Sigma 50mm 1.4 for mirrorless. I'm happy with the Sony 85mm 1.8. I need a smaller 50mm 1.4 for my A7III. Great review Jared beautiful model.
I wonder if you left IBS “on” for the photo shoot comparing the Sigma to the Sony and shooting with the tripod. If so, that might explain the out of focus results with the Sony lens.
Just an observation... On the 3:1 views, it was difficult to determine if there was a slight difference in the focus plane because they always seemed to be zoomed into a different point. Seemed like the Sony zoom was more on areas with less depth that could be used to see if and of the perceived difference in sharpness was due to a little difference in where the focus point was. To me. it looked like the Sony lens wound up focused at the iris or a little farther and the sigma was just in front of the iris.
I don’t know which is more correct,. At @ 11:50 and 12:04 you can see in the images that the Sigma makes the image look elongated,. Check the close up shot at 12:04 Another thing is,. Does Nina wear contact lenses,.? I thought I saw what looked like contacts on her eyes,.. maybe the contacts is confusing the eye AF and causing the glare,.. “Just a thought” maybe it happened with your contacts also...
Just wondering if you tested the lens around f2-f4 ranges? & if so how was the sharpness comparison? And did you test the video AF with these too? That’s where sigma has been behind a bit, auto focus for video has always been a bit clunky & slower! I’m interested ✌🏼
For all the heavy competition being given by other companies, Sony's opening of their lens mount is a big remaining advantage. You could have a killer, complete lineup now without a single Sony lens, even if you set aside the huge Frankenlenses Sigma originally slapped an internal adapter onto.
Great review Jared. I picked up a used copy of the '85 g Master lens. I did that probably almost a year ago. If this lens had came out during that time I would have picked that one up over the g Master. I can say this I have no plans to return my gm 85. I have learned just about everything I need to learn about how it works is strength and this weaknesses. it has become my number one lens that I used in my portrait work. The vast majority of the images that I take with it are fact sharp. In my view there no difference is sharpness when you have to go win three to one to find the difference.
Sorry but I also have owned the 85mm GM for a couple years now, and the minute I look at its images compared to my 135mm f1.8 GM images I can see the lack of sharpness wide open in the 85mm GM images. at 1:1. I noticed from the beginning that you had to stop down the 85mm f1.4 GM to get better sharpness and that kind of defeats the purpose of the f1.4 lens. The 85GM was no longer the sharpest 85mm on the market even before this new Sigma came out. The rendering is nice, but I have been just waiting for the right time to sell it, and I am selling it and getting the Sigma. The 85mmGM is due for a refresh, it is slow to focus, not sharp enough at f1.4 and too expensive IMHO.. Sony managers i spoke to at WPPI show in Las Vegas, back in February, hinted that Sony may have a 85mm f1.2 GM in the works with better lens design and faster linear focusing motor. I cant wait for that sure to be expensive lens. Hey, if you love the lens be happy and keep it. But IMHO, now is the time to get my value out of the Sony 85mmGM and sell it before its value drops. Cheers

For portraiture and street, I'd use zeiss, voigtlander, leica (way out of my price range lol), older Nikon, and good vintage glass. 7artisans, TTartisans and some other cheap Chinese lenses have tend to have that classical dimensional rendering as well.
654789qwe agree
Have one coming tomorrow for my Leica SL. CAN'T WAIT!!! All I need now is NINA!!!
As a Canon user, I'm very jealous of the Sigma FF mirrorless lenses like the aforementioned 14-24 and this 85 1.4.
wait so, why don't you just get a FF camera?
Jared, you said they are the only native Sony E mount 85/1.4. Did you forgot about the Samyang AF 85/1.4? It's amazing.
When is the real world review coming out of r6 ? Really curious!! Love from india 🇮🇳
Even I'm waiting for canon r5 review
Filming soon. Taking our time.
Okay brother thank u ❤️ 🙏
After watching this review… I need some additional details in order to be able to make an *informed* decision:
- To what degree is this lens able to withstand the elements, especially compared to the Sony one?
- Is this lens compatible with the Lens Compensation functions [aberration corrections, taking care of vignetting, chromatic aberrations and distortions *in-camera!]* in the Sony cameras?
I would also keep in mind that while native lenses can be adjusted and updated while mounted on the camera, for the Sigma *the Sigma USB Dock is needed, which is a separate purchase - let alone that it is something extra to learn how to use and take care of!*
I wonder why *precious few, if anybody at all* ever mention anything of this in reviews - especially on RUclips!
In terms of focusing the GM85 is really dated. This becomes very apparent when compared to the GM24 or GM135. Those are the lens that the sigma’s focusing speed and accuracy should be compared to. I’m hoping Sony will refresh the 85 to current GM performance.
Thanks for the provided files. Crazy how far Sigma has come!!!
I already pre-ordered the Sigma for the L MOUNT ALLIANCE!! Fast primes are lacking for my S1 right now and this one looks like a winner for sure. I like the size too.
I put gaffers tape on my Sony’s [135] aperture ring to keep it locked down.
Great video really appreciate the lengths you go to especially to get a 2nd Copy of the lens to exclude you having a dudd copy brilliant loving the sigma 50 mm1.4 art on the R6 👍👍
Best camera review channel on youtube
Recently I sold all my Canon camera/lenses and then switched to Sony because there are not many RF lenses and all are very expensive. It was painful decision because I used Canon since EOS 5. Now I have 2 Sigma lenses, 35mm f2 and 85mm f1.4 dg dn, I really happy with them, 85 is my all day lens.
Oh man.... the "golden grams" (Grahams?) example/advert was the smoothest, best transition advertisement I've seen yet!
Organic lol.
I’m about to get 70-200 f2.8 GM. Sigma please release the 70-200 f2.8 DG DN.
Sharpness a little bit overhyped, especially for portraits.
i guess it depends on the aesthetics ypu're looking for, but yes i've had great portraits with both bery sharp lens and not so sharp lens
I have an S1H and honestly one of the best cameras I have ever owned.
These are some of the nicest pics I seen here Jared.
You were comparing both lenses at 3 to 1, but at 3 to 1, the sony 1.8 is sharper than the 1.4 and it focuses faster.
Love your reviews, super helpful. Love your style bro!
6:42 why do people want the intentionally out of focus details to be sharp? Sharp blur is ugly af in my opinion
It's nice to see the aperture lock switch from the Nikon AF-D lens being implemented in these new lenses. Thanks Sigma!
I'll keep my "old" Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG HSM. Great AF, sharpness, colors and: FREE BICEPS GAINS
I like everyone to see how big my lens is, so I love my original 85 art.
Props . That was an incredible review And you were actually funny this time. Excellent job FroBro
Excellent review thank you. Would you do a comparison to the Samyang 85mm f/1.4? Thanks!
Just curious... What do you guys who shoot portraits look for in a lens? Surely sharpness isn't a primary consideration?
yea, tack sharp focus on the eye is of the utmost importance to me.
That was a really nice photo of you Jared :-)
Just an observation... On the 3:1 views, it was difficult to determine if there was a slight difference in the focus plane because they always seemed to be zoomed into a different point. Seemed like the Sony zoom was more on areas with less depth that could be used to see if and of the perceived difference in sharpness was due to a little difference in where the focus point was. To me. it looked like the Sony lens wound up focused at the iris or a little farther and the sigma was just in front of the iris.
This is the video I was waiting for all weekend!
I have SIGMA 85 1.4 (Non DN) version loving it. Any chance you can do a head to head comparison for these two SIGMA lenses?
I don’t know which is more correct,.
At @ 11:50 and 12:04 you can see in the images that the Sigma makes the image look elongated,. Check the close up shot at 12:04
Another thing is,. Does Nina wear contact lenses,.? I thought I saw what looked like contacts on her eyes,.. maybe the contacts is confusing the eye AF and causing the glare,..
“Just a thought” maybe it happened with your contacts also...
And yes, the image from the Sigma, looks more pleasing to my eyes,. Or is it Nina lol 😂
Great Review
Pre order coming in soon! Been waiting for this all week! Does Allen’s camera ship to the uk?
I like that manufacturers are making lenses that are specifically for mirrorless. Look at how much smaller that Sigma is than the DSLR Sigma 85!
No RF mount yet? Will there be in the future?
Nope. Canon's not opening up the RF mount to 3rd parties.
Compare it to the Zeiss Batis 85mm
Just do it!!! Love it. Great review also by the way. Oh did I mention. Just do it. Keep up the sterling work sir. 👍🏻
The Sigma looked to have better contrast as well. Great video & lens!
That's why I bought the Sony 90mm Macro f/2.8 OSS - it has the best sharpness for this range. Still wondering if getting a f/1.4 is justified for me.
Cheers
Hey Jared! Don't know if you have tried the Sony 85mm 1.8. Wonder if the new Sigma is comparable or slower when it comes to AF speed. I own the 85mm 1.8 and like the focusing speed. Thanks!
I purchased the Viltrox 85 1.8 and am very pleased. I also have the Helios 40, which is 85 1.5.
Nice comp vid...also found my new ring tone @7:42
I was looking at 85mm lenses today and was searching for some videos on RUclips. And guess what I just found! Thank you
