Fun fact, Danny Carry used to let Tool practice in his "studio" and he felt bad for them b/c their drummers kept flaking out or quiting, so he filled in and stayed. Also, Tool and Rage Against The Machine used to have MAJOR jam sessions (Danny's place) b4 Rage became a band, Maynard used to co-vocal/write w/ Rage as well... it's Awesome you saw the connection between the bands w/o knowing any of the history.. Good on you!!

Just for some reference with the counting: the verses are counted as a bars of 5/8 and 7/8. This song has a TON of time signature changes and syncopation. Especially during the bridge. All three of them are playing in different time signatures that line back up after a certain number of rounds. Fits into the concept of miscommunication.

The reason I like this type of music as opposed to others is because it's like looking in the mirror and a window at the same time. In the mirror you are forced to examine yourself and see all of your own imperfections and hopefully realize that not only that you need to improve but more importantly, that you can. Through the window we see the world around us in all it is and in all in can be, which in turn better helps us understand it.
Other forms of music are purely about imposing your will. Which I see no value in, other than understanding that this is the crux of what some people want from life.

the part at 12:19, if you listen closely you can hear that its fast groups of three. his hands are hitting his toms in unison on the 1 of the group of three, and the 2-3 is on his bass drums. toms-bass-bass-toms-bass-bass-toms-bass-bass repeating. the sticking would be, B-RF-LF-B-RF-LF (both (hands), right foot, left foot, both, right foot, left foot, repeating).

It's surprisingly one of the easiest songs to deal with the timing though when playing. The largest amount of time changes are just the same 5/8 into 7/8 riff through the verses. If you think of that as a syncopated 6/8 riff then there actually is very little time change going on (relative to that 47 times).
      Still phenomenal though.

@Jeff T Schism is one of their easier songs, but Tool are by no means "Prog for Normies", of which I assume you mean they aren't that progressive. The way they arrange their songs and albums go beyond just being super technical and complex, no hate to Dream Theater, but Prog doesn't just mean complex virtuoso instrumentation. Otherwise, Pink Floyd and Genesis wouldn't be considered some of the greatest bands in the genre. Prog simply means to progress past the norm of music structure, usually with influences of classical music and derivatives of Art rock.
Lateralus, as I'm sure you've heard, was constructed in a way that paid homage to the Fibonacci sequence, while the underlying messages of their songs and even some albums tend to follow patterns regarding a particular concept in a way that differs from your typical concept album. Ænima is largely based around concepts of Jungian psychology, as well as the interpretations of monologues from Bill Hicks. Lateralus also holds the triad conspiracy regarding the placement of the tracklistings, in that rearranging them can make the album flow smoother, as later named "The Holy Gift". Furthermore, the themes of ones evolution of the mind have evolved throughout each album.
Undertow shows the human at it's barest and most natural traits.
Ænima Introduces the concept of evolution and mysticism.
Lateralus puts such concepts to the test, eventually unlocking the secrets of the mind.
10,000 Days is a reflection of the life left behind, as one begins to notice humanity for all it's deepest faults.
Fear Inoculum allows the mind and spirit to become one as a newly envolved being.
Admittedly, this is specifically my own interpretation of the progression, but there is a clear pattern and constant change moving throughout, as helped by the music, artwork, videos, and lyrics displayed throughout each album and song.
This is 100% a Progressive feature and the need for overly complex instrumentation is not necessary, nor the point. However, if you want to talk about that aspect, then look no further than the rhythm section. Danny Carey, as most would agree, is quite possibly the greatest relevant drummer alive today, while Justin Chancellor's bass playing is like no other in the way he can achieve his sounds and melodies. Adam Jones may not be the most talented shred guitarist, but he, like David Gilmour, experiments with his instrument to achieve unique sounds and guitar tones. I will say, off all the members, Adam is the most "Normie Prog" of the four, but combined with the rest, they are a truly unique band.

    • @dangerkeith3000
      @dangerkeith3000 4 года назад +1

@@AtticsTV That's how I always play it on guitar. And if you find sheet music for Danny Carey's drum parts, they write it out as a 6/4 riff and put the 2 bars together. It's annoying having to read a new time signature in each measure and doesn't really help with playing.

Its funny you mentioned Rage Against The Machine, because Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer of Tool, has done some work with RATM. Check out the song Know Your Enemy, you'll love it.

Every Tool song is incredible.... maybe not the interludes, although some of those are pretty good too! Just check out the whole discography.

    They sound that clean live.

The drummer is the one who made it that difficult. Him and the guitarist. The bassist comes up with the groove, and the guitar player and drummer take his groove and proceed to make it super complex. Then the singer waits till they mostly finish the song and adds his vocals.

I have seen them live, and honestly not only can they bring the studio to the live they also blow you away. If you enjoy hearing them on the album you need to see the live show to fully appreciate them. Same for Sevendust. Also recommend a reaction to Sevendust " Seasons" or " Face to Face"

Which drum solo are you asking about? If you mean the drum cam video it’s Pneuma but that wasn’t necessarily a solo - it’s just the song. As far as a solo goes - pretty much everything he does is worthy of standing on its own. :)

I wouldn’t necessarily look too much into the imagery of the lyric video; there actually is a music video for this song (though idk how illuminating that would be either lol)

When you said "solo" I think you were referring to his Pneuma drum cam video which wasn't a solo but was all footage of Danny during a live performance of Pneuma. He does have a solo on the Fear Innoculum album though called Chocolate Chip Trip which you would LOVE

I tried my best to avoid too much info into my most beloved band. Don't want to see videos or personal info. I want to appreciate them for the music only. Tool came before Rage. You made a lot of sense. It how I enjoyed my Tool.
