My favs for newer listeners outside of Sober (I agree, the live version of Sober is a must see) are Intolerance and Swamp Song. I just went through what you've reacted to so far. So much good stuff ahead for you. When you do 46&2, do some reading about what it means first and then watch the vid of the kids at O'Keefe Music Foundation who cover it brilliantly. Afaik this track is about kind of a split within Tool itself. Maynard is wel known for his multiple layers of lyrics and possible ways of understanding
Interesting
So this song is about communication in relationships. Between 2 people, or multiple people, or nations, or what have you.
Each verse talks about knowing that at one point things were good. But, things have changed. The song asserts that the reason things fell apart was largely due to lack of communication. In the end it states that the relationship can be repaired, but we have to grow, and resist the temptation to point the fingers, and instead fix the communication.
Yes it's about love, but it is also about people, humans. At least that is how I see it.

Yeah yeah, that’s what I appreciate about tool. The music, lyrics, to me they’re all about patterns. So a lot of their lyrics can be interpreted in several ways because it applies to different situations with the same like underlying human behavior or emotion. Spiral out friends

Comment for the algorithm. Many great TOOL songs, basically every song they ever released. I got into them in about 02 to 03 and really only listened to the handful of songs I had heard but loved. Then around 06 to 07 i started to get curious and branch out. Then every wekk or so I would think I found my favorite song only to find another one. And that switching kept going on for literally years. Even now if you ask me what my favorite is, it is so hard to truly pick one because they are all so special to me. My favorite album though is Lateralus which has this song Schism on it. When I bought that album it literally slowly transformed my entire outlook on life. Spiral oit and keep going!

Tool is the greatest band to have ever walked the earth. Tool’s army has their eye on you. You will want to start a playlist. Also, stay away from lyrics and just listen. The lyrics come much much later. Try “Pushit” song of Aenima album next, spiral out and let go!!
I think, I hasten to add only my personal opinion, but the song ‘means what it means to you (each of us are likely to bring our own experiences and conjoin/ superimpose on the lyrics , without further (to the band) external influence. It’s a choice, but my choice would be to go with your own interpretation - I think (only guessing here) that is what Tool would prefer …. In any event I really enjoyed your reaction ❤ take care and lots of love from Scotland ❤
To tell the truth, every time you mentioned that you liked the guitar, what you heard in the song was the bass... Both the introduction and that sort of spacey solo in the middle of the song are played by the bass e.g. .
I am a pure tool army fan. Most songs can mean a variety of things. They always have a meaning to him but usually left ambiguous enough for people to express an emotional feeling they themselves need.
I'm not a rude elitist fan that will berate you if you're misinterpreting. Always happy to welcome and share what I know. Your genuine intrigue makes me hope u continue on the tool journey.
As for suggestions I'll happily help. Want deep meanings: 46 and 2. (If you like I can even provide the Jungian theory in simple form it pertains to im comments or message. Up to you. Want angry songs with no holds barred try: Ænema. About hidden classism and the general fake nature of LA culture. Or Stinkfist (obviously a disturbing double-entendre) but essentially about how society needs more and more stimuli to actually react to things with real emotions anymore... Etc.
If you continue... I'll be one of many Sherpas that will gladly help though.
You should definitely watch the sober music video before you watch the live version. That way, you'll understand his performance better.

46&2 is a remarkable song, and thought provoking. Before you listen though you might want to get acquainted with Carl Jung and chromosomes. Currently we have 44&2 the next step is Christ conscience/46&2. But to be on the safe side for now I'd try Vicarious, Right In Two, or Aenema.
