The golden ratio is used to describe spirals, which are mentioned several times in the lyrics: "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be human", "spiral out, keep going" twice, and "spiral out, keep going." five times. Also, Keenan first begins singing 1 minute and 37 seconds into the song, which equates to 1.617 minutes (the golden ratio = approximately 1.618). But despite all that, I believe there's a prety good chance that not only the song, but the album Lateralus is aimed at the ideas of alchemy, especially due to the fact that the philosopher's stone often serves as a spiritual metaphor to evolve from a lower state of imperfection and vice (symbolized by the base metals) to a higher state of enlightenment and perfection. References to this spiritual transmutation are: "give away the stone. Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor. Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold." ~ the grudge "black then white are all I see in my infancy, red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me....Lets me see". ~Lateralus if seen in this perspective, the part from Lateralus can either refer to the four colors of the philosopher's stone during different phases of creation, or to the colors of the ingredients themselves (i.E. Black = mercury, white = salt, yellow = sulphur, red = stone). But let's not close our eyes to the infinite possibilities ;-) it is also believed that the same line refers to the order in which infants start to see colors. The infant theory is strongly referenced in the book "The Giver," about a secluded utopian-esque society with many secrets. It is suggested that all within the society are fully color blind. Slowly the main character begins seeing colors, the red of an apple, then the yellow of the sunlight, like an infant awakening to reality.

Each instrument was playing thier own poly rhythm, you jive with 1 instrument then follow the vocals and realize you get lost in another instrument. It is planned that way very specifically.

First time I heard this song I was in primary school, the music video whilst a little creepy for me at that age was intriguing as hell. Tool are masters of making you go "I'm confused but I like it"
If you're listening to it as intended, you're under headphones in a dark room in some meditative state by this track into the album. You're not bobbing your head, you're floating in the inner space and wondering at the shit your mind is showing you because of the song. A lotus opening made of light or something. Eyes.
Over 20 years later I’m still learning and hearing different messages from each song by tool. Arguably the best band. Ever. Tool takes you on a journey where you just sit back and let there music guide you through this hypnotic moment in time while listening to them. You need to check out more tool, also A perfect circle where the lead singer is the same.
This was my first song I learned how to play on bass. Played concert Saxophone for 8 years and the time signature changes still mess with me to this day. Everyone in this band is insanely talented.
This song and it's album are right at 20 years old. There are people so dedicated to the band that the music is almost like a religion. Tool is one of those bands that attracts the most dedicated audience imaginable and I'm not talking the toxic "Stans' or "Barbies". Just a huge group of friendly music nerds.
I mean the grammy's are trash. They're literally a popularity contest and artists can buy votes by taking the voting members of the RIAA on lavish trips giving them gifts etc etc. That's why someone like beyonce has 100 credits on her album, all those people can vote for her as long as they're credited one more time that year. The grammy's are a joke.

I absolutely LOVE Tool. One of my favorite bands from these last 15-20 years or so!! I've seen them twice in concert. Once in my city, and once in Toronto! The videos are artistic, as most the vids were in the 90's/early naughts. Amazeballs!!🤘🤘🎵🎵🎶🎶
A tip the bass is the closest thing you get to a beat. The guitar and bass are typically the rhythm section. They change time signatures and continuously come to points on time in unison. Tool as a whole, everyone takes leads and holds rhythms vocals included. Maynard counts syllables to keep parts in rhythm. This band isn't just a rabbit hole it is the rabbit hole.

if seen in this perspective, the part from Lateralus can either refer to the four colors of the philosopher's stone during different phases of creation, or to the colors of the ingredients themselves (i.E.
So happy you're doing Tool now layedbak. I recommend doing Eulogy, Sober, or Parabola next.
Whenever I'm talking with a big music lover, I mention that Parabola, Ticks and Leeches, Lateralus is the best 3 song stretch ever recorded. I challenge them listen to the full 25 minutes and then tell me I'm wrong.
This is what happens when everyone and their brother's introduction to Tool is "The Pot." 😂
One of their more simple songs, poor guy wasn’t really introduced to Tool correctly😂😂
The Pot is a really good song, but yeah one of their most approachable.
My first introduction to Tool was the official video for “Sober.” The 90’s was a weird time for music videos.
@@tadweird1766 same. I think it was on Beavis and Butthead? I remember seeing that video as a little kid. Not knowing what to think lol Tool, all of Maynards projects In fact, top notch amazing
@@relentlessmercy8949 In my opinion, The Pot is a fantastic intro song for Tool because of its relative simplicity. It's more conventionally hooky, which lets it act as a fantastic bridge between your more typical 4/4 stuff and Tool's rain man style of writing. Forty Six & 2 and Sober are really good for that too!
Tool asks you about what you think about life, what you think about music.... laughs and gives you the middle finger of existence
Watching you react to Tool is like showing a friend Tool for the first time every time. It makes me want to watch you react to every song they ever did. Subscribed!
💯 not only is the band collectively incredibly cerebral with their writing and lyrics, but each member brings a unique piece of talent to the equation, arguably Danny Carey on drums being on the highest level.
I love this dude cuz he has such an open mind and good ear for music. LayedBak knows good music when he hears it 💪
3:53 I fucking DIED laughing while I was eating and had to set down my food... I don't remember the first time I heard this song but I knew that part was coming, your reaction was perfect.
I can’t stop pressing this timestamp 😂
it's so ingrained in us i forgot it's even a thing. we hear it all the time and to us it's just another tuesday.
Yessss!!!! I had to go back and see exactly which part you were talking about lol!! Yes! Subtle dope parts to their music we take for granted!
His reaction caught me off guard and had me laughing my ass off too. Surprise mothafuckah!
😂😂😂
Classic Tool reaction! Thanks for not trying to fake it and being genuine about your confusion. I've watched this and your "Pot" reaction and both are great!

"Between supposed lovers"
Is honestly my favourite part, it always feels like someone wandering around an empty house, bare foot and smiling.
🖤🌌
women dont want honesty . tell them all honesty. get divorced.
it was a house. them doing that, having you. they fucked everywhere. trust me
@@tonyb7615 That depends on the maturity of the woman in question and your delivery.
@@tonyb7615dork
Each instrument was playing thier own poly rhythm, you jive with 1 instrument then follow the vocals and realize you get lost in another instrument. It is planned that way very specifically.
what a symphony of musical genius. tool up there with queen as greatest music of its genre. it just goes to show people can love music for what it truly is and not just how catchy it's vocals are.
Honestly, I like seeing people contentedly flabbergasted when listening to tool so this is right up there.
Absolute masters of offbeat or 'imperfect beat'.
Pure genius instrumental talent.
One of a kind band.
Right outta the gate I appreciate your passion. You bob your head side to side & up ' down to the music just like that.
The next one have to be 'Pneuma', the studio version, this song is a masterpiece! Also you can do the Danny Carey version in live of this music, i said do both. Great reaction bro.
Lateralus
Danny carey version 🤩
@@pratikpathak3326, Also, but after the official audio, huh?
Def do the Danny Carey version of Pnuma. It’s ridiculous. It’s called poly rhythms. He plays 4 different drum rhythms at the same time.
No live Danny Carey drum cam version
Some songs have lyrics that are timeless. This is one of those songs. At no point in our lifetimes will this message not be true.
When you have some time, definitely check out the lyrics to this song, because I think you will really enjoy the way in which Tool continues to add layers, not just sonically, but lyrically. They are a WHOLE experience. I hope you get to see them live some day because they are one of the best bands I have ever seen.
I love your reactions, man, stay blessed and thank you for sharing your joy.
Your reviews of rock music are getting me pumped on my old jams again, but with a fresh respect and perspective of them. Thanks bro!
i love the wide variety of reactions. i love that you love music and give everything a chance. I really respect that ab you. The world needs more ppl like you.
My neighbors were just introduced to LayedBak. They’ve already met Tool. 😂
Greatest comment 🤣😊
First time I heard this song I was in primary school, the music video whilst a little creepy for me at that age was intriguing as hell. Tool are masters of making you go "I'm confused but I like it"
"They not playin, Bra. They take you on a full experience." VERIFIED
by watching you reacting to the music I usually listen to makes me appreciate it even more. I love your reaction vids
Long time TOOL fan and new subscriber. It’s not just music, it’s an experience. Enjoy the journey ❤️🤘❤️
Possibly one of my favorite tool songs
If you're listening to it as intended, you're under headphones in a dark room in some meditative state by this track into the album. You're not bobbing your head, you're floating in the inner space and wondering at the shit your mind is showing you because of the song. A lotus opening made of light or something. Eyes.
That’s right and a glass of wine!!!
This is the most pretentious bullshit ever Maynard wouldn't even agree to this circus
@@senorsavage8702 what are you talking about?
Tool makes some of the most raw and fierce music I've listened to.
Fr all the people I know that are avid fans of TOOL are straight up the nicest people
So true!!
Tool's unorthodox tune changes is equivalent to a rapper switching the flow up.😂
Show me a rapper who has won a grammy in 7/21...but ya, it's similar.
Because of your Tool reactions you got a new subscriber, I recently found you and go through your reactions, just know I would like more tool songs. Great reaction
Bruhhhhhh keeps these COMIN. Tool will bring you immense joy, I cant wait to watch you through your journey!
''I think I catched it then I don't''
I died LMAO
Anyone else mesmerized by the lava lamp going through the album artwork? Great reaction, as always.
This is one of those songs where you just need to let the song happen. Try not to groove to it. Just let it consume you.
Haven’t checked in in a while! So stoked to see you being introduced to tool!
When I am stressed out I listen to this song and the world melts away. Just relax and let the music wash over you!
Bro u were on point tho, u got the feel of the music, they just play with their rhythms a lot to throw ppl off, but u got it spot on. Welcome to tool, the tool army will follow you on this journey should u want to continue reacting to more of their works.
You can always tell when it's a cold reaction and they've never heard the track...... after a thousand listens you settle into it so naturally it's like an old recliner at your grandpas house.
Can't wait from you to react to 10 000days !
Long time tool fan, love your reaction my dude. Awesome to watch someone listen to something you love and react honestly
had to drop a like and comment because this was a killer to listen to on camera for the first time. so much to process
I have never clicked on a video so fast in my life. FIRE
At 7:04 that reaction when all he said was “I’m lost, I’m lost. I think I catch it then I don’t... Bruh...” then just presses play again😂😂
React to "Lateralus", that song is going to completly blow your mind.
Yeah…. Another journey of a song lmao
Or reflection. That song is amazing. HELLL MAN EVERY TOOL SONG IS
I absolutely LOVE Tool. One of my favorite bands from these last 15-20 years or so!! I've seen them twice in concert. Once in my city, and once in Toronto! The videos are artistic, as most the vids were in the 90's/early naughts. Amazeballs!!🤘🤘🎵🎵🎶🎶
I love your reaction to Tool! You get it! Tool is one of my favorites bands, I started listening to them in 1993. Hush is my favorite song by them.
Lost keys and Rosetta stoned make perhaps the best combo I’ve ever listened to
Maybe let him ease into that stuff first
Yeah thats advanced Tool. He's not there yet. He needs to get past the radio hits 1st. Lol.
I was going to say 46&2 and Pneuma are my favorite combo but yeah maybe do Lateralus or ænema!
Dont scare him off..he isn't ready...
Haha, he's not ready.
As im sure any other tool fan would day TOOL CHANGED MY LIFE. And thats why tool fans are tools :)
Since I started watching your videos back in 2019, I was hoping for you to discover Tool. So glad to see these reactions man.. Self love and positivity!! #Firesquad
Long time Tool listener here. I saw them for the first time about 4 months ago. When I tell you seeing them live is an experience I’m not even slightly exaggerating. I shook to my core the entire time. I recommend anyone that likes them see them live.
Reason he's probably confused it's because the song literally alternates time signatures LOL
It's fucking art. Tool is so good about changing up time and using unusual ones.
I imagine looking at it in sheet music would be terrifying
47 times, they say.
Aight whatever music nerd🤣🤣
@@adultishgambino6831 not really, if you understand basic time signatures lol
When you get to the point where all you can manage is a "bruh..." a few gestures, and a couple of attempts at a coherent word, that's a TOOL song.
Welcome to the Tool Army my man. Always room for one more. You're in for a good time.
3:53.... he jumps & craps his pants lol...gotta love the real reactions 🤣 ...you rock dude!
Not advocating anyone do it but I had a life changing night with the assistance of Lucy in the sky with diamonds and this song.
