Thank you for the enlightening commentary Antony; you've helped me piece that head cannon puzzle a little more cohesively in so that it makes more sense show-wise.
If you step back and look at just what happens in the flashback scene the connection can be made that the process of turning discord into stone and banishing Luna are the same thing- they were both essentially vitrified; with the mare in the moon being the evidence attesting to it as a "statue" so to speak. It all makes sense now- maybe that'll get rid of that earache I've been having

Man, youre seriously my favorite. There is rarely a time where Im actually enjoying myself listening to someone talk about MLP head cannon and what not.
Side note.. You remind me of Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation.
Yet when a fantasy world is so intricately detailed that every aspect of the plot can be explained through the laws of aforementioned fantasy world, it becomes that much more potent a story! Take, for example, Tolkien's series (Silmarillion to LOTR). Every aspect of that world building is so amazingly and beautifully put together that everything that happens story-wise is believable (within the context of that world). Now, I'm not saying that MLP FIM has to achieve Tolkien status of world building, but I am saying that maybe head canon is the by-product of a not so cohesively written fantasy world. That's my issue with the whole elements shindig.
Another great video as always Antony. On the topic of Elements of Harmony and how they have a different affect on different foes, I've always thought of it in that because Discord is the polar opposite of the elements the reaction between the elements of harmony and Discords... Self, are that he turns to stone - the other times are used to coerce. Except when Celestia banishes Nightmare Moon!
How about rather than "the sisters were disconnected from the elements"... That the sisters were never connected to the elements to begin with? They use them to defeat Discord because in that case harmony and discord are like two opposing forces acting against each other, where harmony came out on top. Kind of like two tectonic plates rubbing against each other until one of them gives way.
But then used to defeat Nightmare Moon? Well, ever considered that Celestia was kind of... Aware of what happened when she banished Nightmare Moon? It's often implied in the show that she regretted the decision she made, in fact it was said in season 4 if I remember correctly, so would that be the decision to use the elements or the decision to banish her to the moon? Like... Actually a concious decision was made to banish her.
Then maybe, because it was Celestia's decision, the elements complied with that decision... Then maybe when Twilight and the others get the elements, their minds of pure and innocent and thus the idea of banishing a pony for a thousand years wouldn't cross their minds. Instead, they tried to have her see reason... But then is it a concious decision every time, except when you're fighting Discord?...
So did they consciously decide to turn Discord to stone rather than be friends with him?...
...And now we're jumping into head canon territory. Ugh! Why oh why oh why is there not just some spectacular grand way to make this work! It doesn't work unfortunately, and the elements are just broken... Considerably so.
But hey! They're gone now!... For now... Hopefully forever.

You know, it doesn't matter whether or not Celestia lost control of the elements at a later date because the entire crux of the issue is that she could use the elements but didn't cure her sister when she still had control of them (which in the scene where she banished Nightmare Moon, she still obviously had control over them).
Why would she even consider sending her sister to the moon, unless she thought that sealing villains away was the only way to save Equestria from them (turning Discord to stone, and sealing Sombra under the ice) and then became internally disharmonious later when she realized that there even could be another way of dealing with those kinds of ponies. (That's my new headcanon and I just made it up, right now, while buzzed.)
This explanation makes more sense to me than the Elements of Harmony being weaker now that they only had one wielder, though that would be a good headcanon explanation as well.

Here is an idea: The elements of harmony, when used by 2 powerful overlords were translated into a weapon capable of banishing foes or turning them to stone. But when the elements of harmony are given to friends that represent then, their true power was released. Celestia and Luna, who are sisters but not really friends, cannot use the full powers of the EoH because they don't know how they properly work. While her 1,000 years alone, she researches and finally figures out that a pony can represent the EoH. So, she looks for one. And then the Sonic Rainboom is preformed and that reveals the EoMagic. So Princess Celestia tries to get her to make friends but can't. She finds the other representers of the EoH but is scared of losing her EoMagic by letting her go. She only finally lets her go when the time is nearly at hand.
Keep up the amazing work Antony. You are my favorite analyst and I hope I meet you at a con one day.

Thoughts on why Celestia banished her to the moon instead of turning to stone. At the time, the stone deal was considered a permanent solution. The banishment was a temporary one till new bearers for the Elements could be found in order to cure Luna. Hence why Celestia banished her little sister to the moon instead of turning her to what seemed like irreversible stone at the time.
Also, you look better without the beard.
If I had to take a shot at the Element of Harmony conundrum. The items were beyond understanding aside from their purpose. How they perform certain actions has a form of control, but the result likely being the unknown due to how powerful they are. Beyond that, I could summise that perhaps Discord is deity of the planet much like Luna is to the moon and Celestia to the sun. So even though this is heresy, Discord himself would be trapped in a form of "earth" while Luna would be trapped within the moon.

I am still under the supposition that Celestia was to naïve at the time to save her sister from her nightmare-ish ways...but we really haven't the slightest clue how old Celestia is now, nor was then...
y'know i think that the effect of the elements depends on the pony wielding them and the pony/whatever they're being used on. However that is just my Headcanon solution

Okay, here is a headcanon, for you: The Elements Banish unharmonious power. In Discord's case, his power is tied up in his very being, so in banishing it, the Elements rendered him completely inert. In Nighmare Moon's case, the Elements were not at their full strength, so they were only able to bring down her defenses, allowing Celestia to use a modified version of the banishment spell she and Luna had used on Sombra to banish Nightmare Moon into the Source of her powers. The Moon.
Interesting side note: According to the book Twilight was reading at the beginning of the series, Celestia banished Nightmare Moon "Permanently in the Moon". There was no mention of the 1000 year time limit until the prophecy came about, To me, that means that the original spell had no time limit, and Celestia believed at the time that she was banishing her sister forever. Kind of shows Celestia's mindset and ups the ante a bit.

According to my own personal headcanon, the "magic" in Equestria is harmony and friendship in Equestria manifesting itself in a more literal form, like an energy that exists everywhere and can be channeled by some...kinda like the force. So basically unicorns are Jedi....
Plus it would explain why the elements of harmony, requiring the users to display qualities contributing to harmony, would be very powerful. Also, everything in Equestria requires cooperation, without it the seasons won't even change (except for the Everfree Forest apparently). Equestria is a land that relies pretty darn heavily on harmony.

Well, it was true that nobody knows & all we can do is come up with these unconfirmed headcanons, but IMO, this way's more fun...
Until the show explicitly & undeniably explain this particular conundrum I'm gonna adopt this headcanon as the explanation.
P.S. Don't worry, Antony, it'll grow back. All you have to do is throw away your shaving cream, lock away your razors, kitchenware, hedge trimmers & power tools for a month.
MLP: FiM seems to be Headcanon Paradise, because there are tons of moments like this where all the writers have to say about a plothole like this is "Nobody knows." I seriously think that drags down the show's quality, especially when it's done with things that even my 3-year-old brother can catch. Applejack's parents, for example. I remember seeing a questionnaire where a writer was asked the fate of Applejack's parents and how it effects the apple family. The writer responded saying that they have written the show as if Applejack's parents don't exist. The memory is fuzzy, so that might not be what exactly I saw then and there, but if it is then that is HORRENDOUS writing. It's easy to cook up explanations with magic or technobabble because humanity as a whole knows as much about magic as they do about science, but things that EVERYONE has like, say, PARENTS, not existing? You could have EASILY said that they were in Manehatten with the Orange family or something, but saying that they don't even exist? Then where the hell did the troublesome trio that is the Apple Siblings come from!? Were they mutant experiments programmed to havest apples? Did they arrive on a meteor like Supermare? You can't just leave that pothole there if there's gonna be a parade!
I personally liked the beard, but then again that's just my opinion.

Well we all have our headcanons we want to believe until the 'orders from on high' come down to disprove them. Personally I have my own dozen or so, but they're just fun reasoning's I've heard or come up with. I'm not going to declare that they're true just because I like them. And if I'm disproved I might heave a sigh and shrug, but I won't let it ruin my day.
As for the beard, I honestly think you look better without it, but that's just me. Maybe you should go for a light rugged stubble? Something like Harrison Ford had as Indiana Jones. That might look good when neatly trimmed.
Whatever you decide, just want you to know I love your videos and I do hope to see more of them in the future. Also hope to see you at BronyCon if you can make it. That would be so cool. :)
Great video, Antony. Except I for one don't believe in using Headcanon to fill plot holes and rectify continuity errors for the writers. Plain and simple, it's _their_ responsibility to look for plot holes and inconsistency in their writing, and fix any they find. One example: if all King Sombra did was conjure dark rocks and make a door leading to an illusion easily broken, I can't help wondering exactly how he could have conquered the Crystal Empire. Another example is MMC telling us that Cutie Marks establish your destiny. As everyone knows, thanks to _The Cutie Mark Chronicles,_ it's the other way around. I'm aware some fans have theorized that Starswirl's unfinished spell also affected their memories--and they know that, HOW?
Bottom line, everybody's a critic. Me, as such, when I find a flaw, I'm going to point it out, and not try to whitewash it.
There is as chance we might learn a little more before season 4 is over, because the introduce of the The Tree of Harmony (which might be based off The Tree of Life in Norse Myth). Since we now have the lock box to look forward to the season finale, ewe might even get even more lore about the magic of 'Harmony'.
Lastly just want to point out that many headcanons are very good even outside the MLP fandom

You inspired me that it was ok to have a beard *cry* Now I am without direction. Also Think about it, king sombra was banished to the frozen north, nightmare moon to the moon, and discord into a statue. If that happened to villains IMAGINE if they used them on a regular pony o.O
Okay, I got this. The elements transform the receiver into whatever form they would have to be in in order to bring harmony back into Equestira... for example, when Princess Celestia first used them on Luna/Nightmare moon, she wasn't powerful enough using them on her own to change her back, so she had to be banished to the moon until someone came along that could use the elements to their full potential, I.E. The mane six, who when using the Elements created a power that was stronger then what Celestia could do on her own, so they had the power to turn her back into Princess Luna. Discord is the spirit of the opposite of Harmony, right? So they only possible way the Elements could bring Harmony to him is to get rid of him altogether, but because you can't... really... kill someone... with Harmony... it just encloses him in Stone, making him less of threat to Equestiran society. Maybe the reason Discord was able to break out of the spell in the Return of Harmony was because the Tree of Harmony sensed that he had a possibility of being reformed so lessened it's magic grip on him. Forgive me for bringing up Equestria girls, but in that scenario the Elements also turned the bad guy into something else... or... I guess... the Element, because there was only one. I guess maybe in that one Sunset Shimmer was a very small threat compared to the other two prosecutors so the magic from just one Element was enough to turn her back into a human-pony-thingy... but maybe this wasn't a way to bring Harmony to Equestira but rather to bring Harmony to herself... when Sunset is first turning into that evil Succubus thing she gets all scared, right? Maybe there is some kind of pain that comes with being in that form, and of course we already know that her plan wouldn't have worked for a number of reasons but perhaps the Element of magic brought Harmony back to Sunset Shimmer by bringing her out of that form and fixing the horrible mistake she was about to make? I don't know... That's just what makes sense to me but, maybe my theory has a few holes in it after all.
Well, Discord was canonically awake while a statue, or at the very least aware of whats going on around him. Its possible that moon banishment was somehow less boring than sitting around in a garden for 1000 years.

The headcanon that I have come to accept surrounding the Elements are mostly based on this video, with some things removed, added and altered due to season 4:
Expanding your headcanon: "What are the elements of harmony?"
The basic idea is that the elements representing the "magic of friendship" is just Twi's own interpretation of thier power, and they can actually be weilded with any kind love like love of family, love to God, sexual love, etc. When Celestia and Luna weilded the elements they used the "magic of family" to do so. Then, when Luna became disharmonious, Celestia had to resort to the only kind of love avalible; narcissism. Being unable to draw power from anyone else to be able to cleanse her sister of the darkness she decided to banish her to the moon.
After this Celestia felt pity for her sister and guilt for what she had done. With the "magic of narcissism" neutralized by this guilt, the Elements became useless and sealed themselves in stone, while at the same time, keeping Celestia young for 1000 years so that she could find new bearers. This little idea would explain nicely why Celestia doesn't age, whilst Princess Cadence does, even though they're both alicorns.
What kept Luna young during all those years I am not quite sure of. The best answer I could come up with is that the darkness of Nightmare Moon and the magic of the Elements of Harmony are like yin and yang, complete polar opposites, and thus the "Darkness" kept Luna alive with dark, disharmonious magic the same way Celestia was kept alive with the harmonious magic from the Elements, but now I'm going off on a tangent.
Wow, this turned out longer than I had expected. Kudos to those who put up with my silly rambling for so long, but I really felt like I needed to put some of the words spinning in my head down on paper. I think I'm gonna go and rest for a while now...
I always thought that Celestia could only use half of the elements of harmony and, even if it is for the sake of harmony, the elements could never be used against themselves. Making Celestia incapable of ever using the elements again...
Well, Discord is a chaotic spirit, BUT Luna is an Alicorn. Two different speaches. So two different reactions thanks to the elements. But because both Alicorn Princesses are attached to the elements, when Luna goes bad, the power gets cut in half.
For the record, they were teasing you - we all thought the beard was cool.

On the note of headcanons: mine is that NMM is a evil spirit-thing that possessed Luna, and as long as Luna was jealous or angry or whatever it had full control over her, but a millennium on the moon calmed the real Luna down, allowing the two to be separated, banishing NNM to the moon while leaving Luna behind.
