      Antony C It's a play on the trope of the Noble Mystery Stranger who shows up, saves the day, and leaves without wanting to be thanked. You could argue that it didn't -work-, but the set up was there from the beginning, with the start in Appleloosa and CS's hat and poncho.

    10:00 "What happened to my beautiful satire?"
    Doesn't the satire have to stop once the point has been made? I mean, political satire shows can afford to be satirical indefinitely because politicians will never cease to stop giving them material. But in the case of Pinkie satirizing stock standard children's show singing, the point was already made in the first season. We saw Pinkie being a terrible singer at least twice already. In which case, wouldn't it be apt for the song writers to then try to make songs that they consider to be better than the music they're satirizing? It's easy to point out why something is bad, but it's much more difficult to improve.
    And in the case of why it had to be Pinkie Pie; well, wouldn't that symbolically drive the nail into the proverbial coffin? If the character originally directed towards satirizing and condemning cheap and lazy children's musical affair turned around and demonstrated how to pull off the same with talent then the satirization is basically complete.
    I'm fairly certain that wasn't the intention of the team. The intention for Pinkie Pride was probably "Let's recapture the awe of the Smile song". But even so.
    Unless what you mean when you say, "What happened to my beautiful satire?" is that Pinkie turning around and singing earnestly undermines the previously established satirical tones of the show, and thereby undoes or invalidates the original intentions behind making Pinkie a bad singer in the first place. In which case I am compelled to ask: "How?"

      Antony C
      I wouldn't say she does it "badly," she sings very "simply." She sings like a kid would sing, which lends them a sort of innocence.
      Her song in Over a Barrel didn't start the war by being low quality; it's because it wasn't well thought out, which was sort of the point. You CAN'T solve a complicated problem like this by throwing platitudes at it. Sure, the moral applies, but you do have to fit it to the situation. The problem wasn't solved until they sat down and negotiated, to decide HOW they were going to share.

      the collabs he does are with funny people they just don't use the same extreme type of humor that Silver and Antony do, the majority of the analysis community write pretty good scripts and try their best with editing and stuff, so they are quite enjoyable, its just when someone like silver quill or antony makes some big over the top hilarious video with really great editing and such it can overshadow the rest of them. luckily it also can serve as inspiration for future improvement, and by including them in the collabs he gives them some extra attention and they can work together to make something pretty great ^^ and of course learn from the experience. Though I do agree, Antony C and Silver Quill working together... EPICNESS!!!

    The name gag keeps in line with the whole Cowboy motif that Cheese's serious personality had going for him. The cold Clint Eastwood-ish opening, him walking off into the sunset to western music, he's even sporting Eastwoods outfit from the Good the Bad and the Ugly. Considering that Pinkie herself is quite genre savvy, it didn't seem THAT out of place...did it?

  • @TigerWolfDemon

    • @AdaMakes
      @AdaMakes 10 лет назад +2

      Yes, it is a reference to an old western but does that make it any better? Is it automatically funny because it's a reference? No, at least it shouldn't be. Now, it could have still been a reference and been funny if it was set up properly, but it wasn't and that is the key point. There was no set up, it was just there to continue the occasional western theme (the party near the beginning, Cheese's outfit, the goof off at 'high noon' etc.) throughout the episode and even then it's still just a reference that continues a gag rather than being a joke in itself.

      Did none of you guys get the western references throughout the episode? The episode itself was basically an homage to old western movies. Newcomer comes in trying to take the spotlight only to be challenged at high noon to a duel, that's this episode in a nutshell. It was even giving off a western flair at the beginning of the episode at Appaloosa. The joke comes from Pinkie Pie's ability to 4th-wall break and recognize these references. She tried to make a joke referring to the references, but no one else was aware of the setup so it fell flat, that's the joke. Of course you guys will probably take the "If you had to explain it, then it wasn't a good joke" route but there it is.

    Mr Antony.
    What are you talking about? Pinkie is a great singer. One of her songs got the whole freaking town to bounce around on the roofs like freaking bounci-ponies. And the whole "Tell me she's not" bit from the first episode is not from that Twi thought she sung bad, just that....she sung in a situation like that which they were in!
    And Pinkie DID sing in the Apples to the Core song! I don't have anyting to defend the situation in Over a Barrel, but that one thing is not enough to bash her singing in the rest of the show.
    On top of that, the bit from Rarity Takes Manehatten where she sings in the rain, pun intended, she was bleeding with her guilt and gave it to us through a beautiful song that really made clear how she felt. Some would've said that she would have looked cold if that bit wasn't in. It all works for the story of the episode AND still supports her character.
    Sorry for the rant.

    The "pinkie forgot cheese's name" joke is actually a reference to an old american western. It kind of worked because cheese had been wearing the hat and poncho, but while I enjoyed the reference, it did kind of come out of no where and broke up the scene.

    You don't have a trained ear man. If you listened to apples to the core closely you can hear the singer of pinkie pie singing the high parts and it's wonderful. And pinkie wasn't always told her singing was bad. Winter wrap up, her birthday invite song. She's not a bad singer nor is her actress. Please do note that in the case of when they were in the everfree forest i believed that they were annoyed at the time and place she was singing not how she was singing in over a barrel the lyrics are horrible as they were written to be. It was how she was singing.

    Pinkie's singing voice being enjoyable is actually the majority opinion in the fandom. The joke with Pinkie's songs in S1 was that they were completely random, not that they were bad (except the "You Gotta Share" song which the issue was that the lyrics were completely asinine)

    What exactly is wrong with Pinkie's singing? She seems to be in key and has a decent singing voice, as far as I can tell. This could have something to do with me really not liking any musicals that aren't Dr. Horrible, but I really can't see the issue with her singing.
    And this is purely personally taste, but I actually prefered the humor in Cheese episode because it was (objectively worse, yes) more creative than the cave thing. The moment Granny was like "We aint going into a cave!' it was plain as day that they would go into a cave. It was way too predictable for me to laugh at.
    Basically everything else, however, I totally agreed with, from your opinion on song lyrics and the "loyal" one, to wanting Pinkie to shut up, though for different reasons.

    There's a difference between a song that takes place within the plot of the story and a musical number from, like, a musical. Confusing homonyms, I know. The trick to recognizing it is asking yourself if referencing it would be breaking the fourth wall. Pinkie sings plenty of songs in the show to her friends' annoyance, but a musical number is different. Another example of where this is applicable is Scootaloo. The CMC's talent show performance was something that took place within the actual plot of the episode and so she couldn't sing. But in the Babs Seed episode there was a musical number where she sang just fine. She harmonized and everything.

    around 7 minutes. well its meant to be a mystery trope, cowboy meme. it could also be hinting a potential love interest. so while it doesnt make sense for the continuity, it makes sense for the audience, which is where this shows strengths lie because it lets face it, has a lot of plot holes. Some plot holes actually just add confusion which they want you to have during the story. And I think im fairly sure that there was a town like canterlot in a previous cartoon or movie which had a shield/bubble around it since when I was 6 or so I dreampt something like that just without the ponies and the planet didnt have any atmosphere (or smog perhaps, you could see the actual galaxies and such in space.) Because I doubt my mind could have come up with such a random idea unless it got it from fiction, unless its a recurring theme in dreams and therefore psychology which warrants it being in the show anyways even though it made little to no sense.
    Because I went off on a tangent I will resay, its just for the audience. Cowboys were popular, thatd garner some fans so its more profitable to do that than have a plothole-less show. People like plotholes.

    I always figured that Pinkie's satire-singing wasn't a joke on how "horrible" her voice was, but on the fact that she would even break out into song in the first place?
    Like with the giggle at the ghosties scene, it seemed more like an "omg is she really doing this?? NOW??? really??" kind of reaction rather than a "ugh does she seriously think she can sing?? BECAUSE SHE'S AWFUL".
    Even in Over a Barrel she sang a crappy song, and not even a "good" singer would have made it better?
    So yeah I guess I genuinely like her songs, mostly because they're usually so darn happy and uplifting.

    Not to mention Pinkie refers to Cheese by name later on. Yeah that line was one of the very few things I didn't like in that episode.
    I like Pinkie's singing, I never thought that she couldn't sing, the "gotta share" song was just a bad song. I was more pissed off that Werid Al was given the chance to write anything for the episode.

    I'm sure it's been done, but there are a few things I'd like to point out. Pinkie calls him boneless because that is the name of the rubber chicken, thus implying that Cheese Sandwich is a chicken.
    And, Pinkie saying "I never got that pony's name" Is a reference to old Westerns, where the hero walks off into the sunset after saving the day, without ever even introducing himself.
    As for pinkie's singing, it was never said that she was a bad singer, and any implications of such were more about the timing of the song, not the skill with which she does it.

  • @IHate4Kids

    Personally for me I like Pinkie Pride better then Pinkie Apple Pie, BECAUSE the jokes and songs were better than the latter.
    I felt the jokes in PAP were too obvious with an example being that Granny saying she wasn't guiding them through the scary cave, but actually was. The joke Pinkie told at the end about not remembering Cheese Sandwich's name actually made sense. She was making a reference to old Western Movies, (Clint Eastwood movies to be exactly) where the protagonist would wondered into a town, save the day, and leave without ever giving out their name; this made sense seeing as how the entire episode was a parody of the old movie genre.
    Also I don't think the show ever claimed that Pinkie had a bad singing voice. In the second episode, when Twilight said "Tell me she's not..." she wasn't saying Pinkie's singing was horrible, but how Pinkie was singing despite the situation they were all in. Also in Over A Barrel, Chief Thunderhooves said, "That was the worst performance we've ever seen." meaning he disliked Pinkie's message in the song, then her actual singing.

    Pinkie Pie forgetting the guy's name was a joke regarding the Clint Eastwood films where the protagonist name was "The Man With No Name." Cheese Sandwhich has the whole poncho and hat thing going on and the beginning had the whole western thing going on.

      Actually Antony C, I must raise a point.
      You targeted Rarity in Rarity takes Manehattan for saying that she sang about her feelings in the reprise of Generosity. However in Pinkie Pride, Pinkie Pie sings partially about her feelings in the song called Pinkie's Lament, which I thought was like the climax of the whole episode and the turning point at the bridge as Pinkie finds the truth that she had to go out there and prove herself as the best party planner..
      Care to have a rebuttal to this point I have risen? Because the question I have risen out of the deep think tank of my inner self is this: Was there an actual difference of how both ponies were feeling between Rarity's moment in the reprise of Generosity and Pinkie's Lament in Pinkie Pride? I know you must be very busy and probably won't see this pop up, but if you do, I would very much like to see if you, "the best of the Pony fandom's comminators," could explain this mystery before it goes south.
      Waiting Patiently,
      Adam Kaiser

      Adam Kaiser
      I can't claim to speak for Antony, but I think I have an idea. As he pointed out, the Generosity reprise was simply restating something that we had already been shown right before that, so it comes off as somewhat redundant. Contrarily, Pinkie's Lament shows us her development and realization firsthand. Pinkie's Lament helps move the episode forward, whereas Generosity slows the episode down to add an extra minute of filler.

    • @AdamKaiser1
      @AdamKaiser1 10 лет назад

      But yet again, we know that Pinkie is sadden by rejection in Pinkie Pride moments before Pinkie's Lament and lies to Twilight so she can be in peace and teary-eyed all by herself, which anyone who watches this episode can clearly see that she knows that she is sad and is singing about her feelings towards both being replaced and saddened that she will be forgotten...

    • @ChuckleheadsUninc
      @ChuckleheadsUninc 10 лет назад

      Yes, but the song doesn't stop at just telling us that she's sad; it's used to show Pinkie realizing that she doesn't need to be sad and that she can overcome her situation.

    You don't watch very many westerns do you honey? Haha pinkie pride featured a lot of Clint Eastwood references and western movie references in general. They are rather easy to miss, if you've never seen a western, or Clint Eastwood movie, but a lot are noticed. References such as the man with no name, which the end joke hit, the show down and another reference that I can't remember cause it went over my head and wasn't until a friend pointed it out to me.(something about the time I think?) either way glad you reviewed my possibly only favorite episode in the recent season. I love your videos.

    In many other 20th century spaghetti westerns the unknown hero walks off into the sunset after saving the day and one of the characters always says, "Who was that masked man?" or "I never did get that man's name." I believe this was mostly used in Zoro, but it was used in other movies too.

    This video is over a year old but i gotta point out that Pinkie saying she never caught Cheese Sandwich's name, was a reference to Clint Eastwood's spaghetti western character, "The man with no name". The poncho, hat, and even the gravelly (Or intended to be gravelly) voice he used in parts of the episode were references to this and her comment at the end was to bring it all together. The references were more intended for parents than for comedic value.
    Again i know it's old news and i don't need to point it out but with all the energy you put into stressing how her saying that didn't make sense, was unfunny, and out of character of Pinkie, i couldn't help it.
    And whether it's actually entertaining, well... It all depends on who you are.
    Keep on pissing people off by pointing out the flaws of a lovely, colorful, equine, kid's show. We love you for it.

    "Deliberately designed to be ... bad at singing"
    That right up there, that's the problem. This isn't the case. Pinkie was designed to be the character that is good at singing. Sweetie Belle was designed to be a bad singer. Smile Smile Smile was a song that everypony liked. They even joined in. I never understood that 'joke' where the buffalo hate her singing. I thought it was great. No different than any other of her songs. (Which other ponies do like)

  • @Keenath
    @Keenath 10 лет назад

    Pinkie will always remember or not remember things, whichever is funnier.
    In this case, the "never got his name" gag in Pinkie's Pride was a reference to the westerns (spaghetti and otherwise) that they keep referencing throughout the episode. About three out of four episodes of the Lone Ranger ended with somebody saying some variation on "Who was that masked man?" or "I never did get his name..." and somebody else would reply, "You don't know? That was the Lone Ranger!"
    Some of the other examples were Cheese's outfit, which looks like the Man With No Name (from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, among others), and when Pinkie declares a duel at High Noon (a cowboy movie about a gunfight) and Twilight points out that it's past noon already, Pinkie changes the time to "3:10 to Goof-off" as a reference to 3:10 To Yuma (another cowboy movie about a gunfight).

    "I never did get that ponies name" is a reference to the "Dollars Trilogy" of spaghetti Western films, in which Clint Eastwood plays a man in a broad, flat hat and poncho (not unlike Cheese Sandwich), known only as "the man with no name". This parallel to the Dollars Trilogy is also the reason why the episode begins in Appleoosa.

    something occurred to me about the Generosity reprise in RTM. While yes we saw that Rarity was distraught over what she did to her friends, but the short song doesn't focus on that. It is about how forlorn Rarity is without them and looking for them (with wet mane no less), so it did have a reason to exist.
    Not to mention it demonstrated the idea the episode had running along it: that good begets good (whole point of the Generosity song) and bad begets bad (which turned out to not be true but at the time Rarity believed her bad behavior in response to Suri's had caused her friends to run off).
