What a great alternate ending! I should stop watching right there. No, wait, then I would've been late to the blood sacrifice, and Winter.

In any case this was so enjoyable to watch
You know, I've noticed what the change to Celestia and Luna's appearance is when they give Twilight their magic.
Their manes may not change colour, but they have stopped flowing.
I just realized it would be really awesome if the box, instead of building that god damn play set, helped renovate the castle of the two sisters with magic... n' shit.
Because God-forbid the show fulfill it main purpose, right? It drives me crazy when people complain about product placements in a show designed for exactly that purpose; when they have absolutely no negative, and in this case a positive, impact on this show. I mean really, would you rather Twilight be elevated even further above her friends in the existing castle than deal with the toy promotion that was used to elevate her friends (even Spike) along with her? And if you are referring to the Rainbow Power thing, it was only on screen for a few seconds; which makes any severe complaints about it nothing more than irrelevant nitpicking.

Except it totally does, cause they pull crap like the rainbow powers and the weird library castle, instead of following what makes sense from the established narrative. TS&Co should have moved into the old Castle. Oops, marketing says no! Have a Library playset! Why the Magic Box, which is just EoH 2.0 and undermines the entire climax of the start of Season 4? So we can spin the color wheel and try to sell more plastic!
elfinfluff Once again, the Rainbow Power thing, and definitely the castle (aside from both being eyesores) don't hurt the cohesiveness of the story. The show lasted 3 seasons with a deus ex machina perfectly fine; and it was already established that they had no hope of defeating Tirek without an outside solution. And, on top of that, the Rainbow Power wasn't even a deus ex machina, as it was built up all season. And the Everfree castle vs. Rainbow castle debate is a nitpick. Explain to me a better way (logic-wise) they could have ended the episode, and then we'll talk.
Since they've been advertising "twilight sparkle's palace" playsets I thought they were going to do just that. Heck in the commercial they have twilight say "hey everyone let's go to my palace" wouldn't it make their lives easier if the toys matched the show?
That would have probably been a better move.
I kind of like to think of Celestia's plan like this... At least it didn't work! "But what?" I hear you cry. I mean, at least Ms McCarthy in all her strange writing actually kind of used the terrible plan to the villains advantage. Remember A Canterlot Wedding - I know you do Antony, don't lie to me! - remember how Chrysalis had a downright brain dead plan that shouldn't have worked... And it worked!
Fast forward two seasons, and Celestia has a downright brain dead plan that doesn't work. Sure, it eventually works when Twilight opens the box but that wasn't even part of Celestia's original plan and they could have reached that conclusion without Celestia's original plan. The very fact that Tirek found out about Twilight through the stained glass window shows that Ms McCarthy didn't miss that one. McCarthy knew where the characters were going, even if the characters themselves didn't... The same can't be said for A Canterlot Wedding, for Princess Twilight Sparkle and the Return to Harmony.
I have to say that despite all this episodes flaws... It does have some pretty darn brilliant moments and I personally felt that the pro's of this episode outweighs the cons by a huge number that I could let them slide.

Yeah, I face palmed SO MANY TIMES at Celestia's choices, sending Discord who would be so susceptible to betray them, giving their magic to Twilight but giving her nothing else to do, and of course NOT TAKING DOWN THE FREAKING STAIN GLASS WINDOW.
Plus they could of been much clever with an ending with the options they had. But over all, it's not a bad finish to a season, hopefully it sets up for greater things in season 5.
I can't stop laughing at the part where you go absolutely OFF about the stained glass window. I was waiting for you to bring it up and I was NOT disappointed. XDXDXD

So am I the only one who thought that Discord planned this all from the start? I mean he told Twilight what the keys are, went to Tirek and helped him without exactly being so serious about it, got betrayed just so he could give Twilight an item in the same way that her friends had recieved an item, which was something he already knew about!
That can be your headcanon, sure, but that was almost certainly not intentioned.

If it was all planned then the whole speech he made was artificial. He didn't really feel betrayed. He was just hamming it up in hopes that the box will believe it. It really wouldn't make much sense. Plus, it kind of throws the shows moral out the window. Real friendships? Nah, half friendships are just as good.

Finally... someone else had seen my view of things. Twilight just flat out gave Tirek the magic he needed to become all powerful for the sake of her friends. This just proves that she's willing to put her friends before Equestria. And what's worse? She didn't know Discord had the key. So she just gave up the hope of Equestria to save her friends.

The ending is just the toy department jizzing all over the episode.
Celestia's plan wasn't to keep Twilight hidden for an extended length of time, just long enough for her to gain control of FOUR freakin' alicorns worth of magic so she *might* be able to either A) defeat Tirek, or B) figure out how to open the Box.
Celestia likely could guess that any attempt to fight Tirek with the alicorn's working together, but with their individual powers being separate, would led to their royal tushes getting handed to them. Think about it, in a fight like that all Tirek has to do is get a hold of *one* of them and suck their magic to tilt the battle utterly in his favor and then trounce the remaining three. Fighting him like that would be too risky.
Now, giving all that magic to Twilight? Not to any other alicorn? Perhaps no other alicorn could have a chance to control that much concentrated magic? Celestia and Luna might have centuries of experience, but that doesn't mean their bodies are any more capable of handling ludicrous levels of magic. But magic is a certain somepony's *special talent*. Out of any of the Princeses, Twilight is the *only one* who could potentially control that much magic, and be able to do so in a short span of time.
I propose that Celestia knew that giving the magic to Twilight was a temporary fix, and that Tirek was *going* to find her no matter what they did. Discord would tell, or he'd spot the window... OR... and he's a crazy thought, Tirek could literally interrogate *any other pony* in Equestria and learn that there was a new Princess in town. There was no *hiding* Twilight forever, or even that long. So why bother making the plan more elaborate? Give Twilight the magic, trust in her student's ability to control it quickly, and then hope that Twilight could either beat Tirek, or failing that, figure out how to get the box open.
As far as plans went, Celestia went with pretty much the only one that had a ghost's chance in Tartarus of working. What *else* would they try to do against a villain that could literally make the spirit of chaos his bottom bitch?
How about using Discord as a compass to find Tirek and take him out themselves?
Discord has also been the bottom bitch to pretty much everyone at this point. Even Fluttershy.
Celestia and Luna already have ludicrous levels of magic.
Just because Twilight is talented at magic doesn't mean she can instantly control a magic she's still learning herself. Let's not forget that she just became an alicorn. So you're saying the body of a newly formed alicorn can handle the tremendous magical force of four alicorns, but a body that's been an alicorn for centuries couldn't? A body that has managed to control already ludicrous levels of magic.
Celestia taught Twilight. Celestia and Luna have mastered alicorn magic. They're more knowledgeable in magic. They're also more experienced on the battlefield. So an attempt should have been made.
Why would Tirek be interrogating other ponies if he doesn't about Twilight? Interrogations are only used to get info. He has everything he needs. He's strong enough to take down Discord and the alicorns. So there would have been no point to it.
It's not about making it more elaborate just thought out a bit better. If the plan was to hide the knowledge of a fourth princess from Tirek, then shouldn't the stain glass window presenting all her glory be destroyed? Why keep it up if you didn't want Tirek to know? We don't know how long Discord would have held that information since he didn't trust him yet. The only reason he told Tirek was because he was called out on it.

There is not evidence in the show to suggest that Luna or Celestia's level of magic is anywhere near what the combined powers of the four alicorn Princess together equated to. The situation seemed to be without precedent, meaning regardless of who they gave the magic to, it was going to be a gamble. In this case, though, I firmly believe that *experience* with alicorn magic just does not equate to the ability to possibly control it the way Twilight's innate talent for magic could. Celestia had to bet on her apprentice being, yes, better than her at quickly controlling that high level of magic, because even a thousand years of experience... really only gives Celestia skill with controlling her own level of magic, not the power of four alicorns combined.
In this case, talent trumps experience. Again, not saying it wasn't a gamble, but a gamble is all these alicorn Princesses had to go with. A desperate toss of the dice, because there were no other viable options.
Tirek could question ponies about literally whatever he wants to, or torture them for fun. Point is; Princess Twilight would get mentioned, sooner or later. It wasn't a question of keeping Twilight hidden, it was just a question of buying time.
We're also assuming there was just the one stained glass window of Twilight. There could be potentially dozens of murals or windows or tapestries or other things displaying Equestria's newest Princess. Also, wouldn't Tirek get curious as to *why* there's a destroyed window in the palace? And you know, like I said earlier, interrogate ponies as to why this is?
Again, Celestia's plan was a desperate one, but there was no real alternatives available that would work as well as giving the magic to Twilight and hoping for the best. There really weren't any other options. At least, for all the people I've seen complaining about the "stupidity" of Clestia's plan, I haven't seen anyone else come up with a better plan that would have an equal chance of defeating Tirek.
I guess you didn't notice, Antony, but pretty much everyone hated Tommy's Plinkett-inspired review because they didn't get the reference.
I rather enjoyed that review of Tommy_Oliver's it hit the nail on the head for that turd called Equestria Girls.

If Tirek was banished to Tartarus before Luna's 1000 year moon vacation, why would he be aware of Cadence?

I'm pretty sure once Cadence became ruler of the Crystal Empire, and how it returned in general after a thousand years, the news might have reached Tirek's ears, as he had been wandering weak in Equestria, slowly getting his strength back since season 2's episode "It's About Time"
Yah, that'd explain it now that I think about it.
She is the incarnation of the Chrystal Princess. I though they spelled that out for you in the Season 3 Premiere. The Chrystal Empire WAS around when Tirek first arrived, so he would know about a 3rd princess.

Your reaction to the stained glass window was exactly the same as mine. From the moment I saw it during the episode my sole reaction was "ARE YOU KIDDING ME! You create this plan to hide your magic inside a princess that the villain doesn't yet know of, but you leave him a GOD BLESSED MAP straight to it! If your going to rid yourselves of your magic, why don't you at least take down the bleeding window? If you have supposedly prophetic dreams, wouldn't you at least have had the foresight to look around your throne room for five seconds to see the window? It would have made astronomically more sense if Discord told Tyrek." But, I forget, if Discord had done that, he would have become irredeemable, and no one could forgive him. Except they would. Cause he is bleeding Discord. It drives me crazy when shows in general, this show especially, pulls what I call a PNS, Plot Necessity Syndrome. Where a character does something stupid, something they would never do under normal circumstances, but does it anyway because 'the plot needs them to.' I always found these moments to diminish the character as a whole, because for Celestia to completely overlook something so overly obvious, that it spits right in the face of her character of wise leader. And one more thing. Even if Celestia honestly did not notice it, Luna, Cadence, or Twilight were also in the room. Surely ONE of them would have noticed.

Thank you, Antony C, thank you so much. Your scathing review of the Princesses' Royal Derp-Out moment - I.e. giving up their magic, but forgetting to hide/take down/ destroy one plate glass window, not even touching how they trusted Discord - was a soothing balm that has helped me...wait... Nope. I still have an immense distaste for this two-parter. Now I guess I just feel a little better knowing that there is at least one other person out there that has put on the fire-retardant britches and waded into the burning-shite to call out this episode as the fail it is.
While I respect your opinion, I think your being a bit unfair to this finale, Celestia came up with that plan as a last resort, now that Discord was on Tirek's side, and using the Elements of Harmony is out of the question as the mane six no longer have them, they can't possibly expect to fight and win, Discord has immense chaotic powers, that even took down the mane six in "Return Of Harmony" and Tirek had pretty much absorbed magic from almost everyone in Equestria. Alicorn Magic is very powerful, and if he even manged to absorb one of the Princess's magic he would be unstoppable, and eventually overpower the other three, and come on even Celestia isn't perfect, her plans can have holes in them, especially when they come at the last second.

You know, what he said about the old castle could have been where twilight now lived. I think that would have turned out much better, I would have loved to see the box possible restore the castle even further and return it to it's former glory, and that could have been given to twilight instead. I Would have loved to see a new library built in the place of twilight's as well. I think that would have made the show so much more perfect and well built.

I was certainly disappointed when the Library was destroyed, and this monstrous carbuncle arose in its place. Something nagged at me, until I remembered a quote from C. Northcote Parkinson, in "Parkinson's Law":

I watched MLP 3-4 years ago. Parallelly I found you on youtube and I absolutely loved everything about your RIM series.
I came back to MLP recently and since your witty jokes from earlier stick with me throughout the years, I was wondering what happened to you, where are you now within youtube. Maybe you continued RIM in the same manner or maybe you expanded your animation skills and developed your own cartoon here.
I was a bit greedy and hoped that the 3.5 seasons of MLP that I missed and was about to binge watch does have a matching amount of RIM episodes ^^, but still I am very happy that you remained active on youtube and I can't wait to check all your work from the past years and looking forward for the forthcoming videos. =)

Actually, Celestia and Luna do change in appearance slightly without their magic. Their manes are still the same shape and color, but they no longer flow or glitter the way they normally do.
Yeah, but think about it, "friendship is magic." They've been telling us since day one. this episode made it cannon. Its not just a moral sentiment or a lesson, it is literal. friendship IS magic, or to put it another way, magic is friendship. The emotional connection between two beings is the source of magic in Equestria. When the baddie stole their mojo, Twilight and her friends literally made more magic from its source. in Equestria, abstract emotions are tangible. The spark is friendship-- magic is friendship. This isn't just the same moral lesson they've been repeating since the beginning, it is a fantastic bit of lore building on the root of magic itself :D
I also think it would be better if instead of the "rainbow of light" (from G1. its obvious what it is) replacing the tree with a ugly tree castle, it should have repaired and modified the ruined castle of the two sisters, and brought the tree library back to life. The old castle could have mods done to it to accomidate 6 ponies, an expanded library, and other amenities that would be needed in the future. With how much focus that castle got this season, one would think thats what they were going to do.

I would have preferred that Discord's power weakened Tirek, in the sense that he can't use its power, but he needs to seal it away so Discord couldn't betray him. Discord had always been displayed as at least an order of magnitude greater than the Alicorn Sisters, and Cadance, while showing some nifty abilities in Crystal Empire and Threes a Crowd, still didn't strike has as awe-inspiring the way Discord's has been.
Now, all of a sudden, the power of all four alicorns is a match for Discord and the essences of thousands of ponies? At least throw in the Canterlot artifact vault or something.
At least we agree, this was better than canterlot wedding :)

If Pinkie had used her fourth wall powers she could have brought Dragon from Shrek to Equestria and asked her nicely to break Twilight's stained-glass window like she broke Lord Farquad's window....problem solved! It could be repaired later and Dragon could even help fight Tirek. Awesome!
I never thought MLP:FIM was very logical at any point. And i don't mean it because "oh rainbows and unicorns are unrealistic" but i mean it because shit gets made up on the spot most of the time when it gets to magic. I mean, i do not like Season 1 episode 1 and 2 for the same reason. Im happy that i finally got to see a badass magic duel and the interaction between Discord and Fluttershy as well as Tirek and Discord was enjoyable to watch. Which is why i like mlp, the colorful characters it has and their interactions. I will roll my eyes and bear to watch the rainbow ponies, superhero ponies or the breezies and their non-sensical shenanigans hoping to see another episode featuring and exploring the characters. I guess that's why all of my friends including the oen who introduced em to the show has abandoned watching it, there isn't enough of those episodes anymore.
Yeah, That Thing about Celestia's Hair, Was I really THE ONLY PERSON to notice her hair and tail 'Ran out of batteries' as some put it. The same goes for Luna
This epsiode is seriously 20 levels of awesome on the face of it...but starts to show some cracks when you think about the logic of it
Still, the sheer rule of awesome, and the fact the logic is nowhere near as flawed as A Canterlot Wedding means this episode still passes with flying colours
It's like a Focke-Wulf 190: It was a seriously unaerodynamic aircraft, without flush rivets and even steps to get into the cockpit...but the gargantuan engine more than made up for any of the airframe's shortcomings to still make it one of the finest planes in the sky

As for Twilight, she really matured in this and I can't help but think that the plan to give the magic to Twilight gave her a sense of purpose in being a princess and finally made her a sort of hero in her own right...It showed how she could defend her subjects and her friends like the true leader she is and not give up ^^

Very good video. You have earned a new subscriber. But there one tiny (well not that tiny) mistake you made. Tirek wasn't a unamed random character thrown into the series like Cadence or Shining Armor. Even though the G4 series never mentioned him, one of the previous MLP movies/series did. I believe G1 had him as a bad guy with his brother(friend/servent in the older one) Scorpan who like Friendship is Magic wanted to rule over Equestria/Ponyland. Both generations of these characters even looked the similar. Even Scorpan in both generations didn't agree with Tirek's way. I know majority of the Brony Fandom become fans because of Friendship is Magic and acknowledge these past generations. But I don't believe many have watched them or know their storyline. So I can understand why you and other fans didn't know of Tirek being mentioned in previous series. I also know that these different generations don't have many connections to the others except for names and the show title. I believe the reason the creators of G4 mentioned Tierk was to give thanks or appreciation to the original My Little Pony. It also very possible they liked those characters as bad guys. Anyways here is link to a wiki about Tirek existence in both G1 and G4 as proof because I know someone will ask for it. Aye. Note the First: Dang, your opinion of Celestia has taken a magnificent U-turn compared to the end of RiM 3. Note the Second: I've kind of gotten to the point with the show where I just tolerate the Openers and Finales, and instead focus on the episodes. Hate to say it, but Tommy Oliver has it pretty square on the head when he said that the show excels in Slice of Life but comes up flat in adventure.
Sigh. you know what would of fixed this episode? If celestia said something like: you must find your key before it's to late, we know teric will come here first to find alicorn magic, but if you store it, you might have enough time to find the key. and then that part will be solved. The rainbow power was bull shit but, well it was short. and the box should of trancformed the sisters castle and branched it out into twilight's and her friends.

7:45 Actually, this may have been a copyright issue. Legally, a company can't use fan suggestions in their work. For example, a romance between Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, planned out by DC already, had to be cancelled because a fan sent in the suggestion that the two should date. So, maybe someone suggested that the castle in Everfree would be Twilight's, and so that ruined it.
Or not, but it's an idea.
Twilight already tried beating Tirek with pure power, and actually I think she had the upper-hoof, so to speak, because he was the one climbing out of the rubble while she was standing pretty and unmarked. I think that if the battle of attrition had continued true to Dragonball style, Twilight would have started to overpower Tirek, not only with an apparently greater source of mana, but also because she'd be able to master other spells in her usual arsenal and bring them to bear against him alongside her ingeniously-applied Teleport and Defensive Shield. And think about this: if things got truly desperate, wouldn't she have been able to 'Moon Drop' Tirek? I think that'd be able to finish him! If it's good enough for a certain Shinsou it ought to be good enough for an MLP princess.
You do realize, Antony, that if they had decided to go the straightest route, plot wise, the whole conflict could have been wrapped up in 15 minutes? Lets say Discord DOESN'T betray Fluttershy (because that's what he's doing, really) and arrests Tirek. Game over even before anything else happens. Lets say Celestia realizes that the combined might of the four princesses is more than enough to defeat Tirek in the state he was in, and they either provide Discord with back-up (in which case the episode ends just as quickly as with a faithful Discord), or they intercept him before he gets to Ponyville because they realize Tirek will get there eventually. Well, things stiil end without resolving the Mystery Chest thread, and we don't get a satisfying Discord character arc either (so many Bronies complain that his reformation seemed rushed). What if somepony had realized that they had a stained glass window celebrating all of the Mane6's victories? Maybe Discord sorta did, and wanted to protect the other members of the Mane6, because we don't get to see their victory over Nightmare Moon, which would have pointed to the existence of the Elements of Harmony... or Spike's and Cadence's victory over Sombra, which would have indicated the existence of the Crystal Heart. In fact, Discord only tells Tirek about Twilight once Tirek has seen proof of her, and he even hides the fact that he just sensed a great power shift. Discord doesn't even see fit to mention the Elements of Harmony, the Mystery Box, or the bloody Tree of Harmony to Tirek. Doesn't he think his new 'partner' would like to use all that magic? But no, not mentioned. So the plot goes all the way. We still have to suspend some disbelief as to Celestia's cobbled-together plans, and Tirek pokes holes in it almost as fast as we do.
The biggest hole, in my opinion, is believing that Discord would trust Tirek. The guy is the self-proclaimed Spirit of Deceit, and he didn't see this coming? And yet he seems sincere in his betrayal, and double so (if at possible) about his Heel-Faced Turn and redemption. The Discord who pulls puns out of his ears and drops clever clues is the one I'm used to. What happened to him? Well, at least his redemption was properly-paced. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything.
Besides, this is a show whose primary audience is young girls. Why take it so seriously?
Dammit now I gotta replay the Katamari Damacy OST!
um the " villein " was a call back from gen 1 and shining armor and princess cadence where pulled out of the blue. never before seen I think not. aside from that it was all spot on mate.
The show has driven the point that magic is the proverbial rocket fuel that powers all magic in this world. I think what they should have done is have all the magic disappear form Tiric as soon as twilight loses her magic.
Without the governing deity controlling magic, it all just vanishes. Tirec then Understnads that without magical power and without anyone left to be his servant, he just gives up on life and hands his powers back to Twilight.
This act would now be the Key that would bring back everyone elses magic and no more. Discord being in possession of a chaotic neutral alignment shouldn't even be allowed to learn a moral lesson.
I agree with pretty much everything you said, but dear lord I still loved these episodes a lot. xD
