  • Many thanks to m'chums DillonP and Matthew for help with this one.
Dillon did some great editing while Mathew and I had an interesting discussion on cutie marks which led this here diatribe. Ultimately I think the writers might be a little confused as to how they work and as such they simply end up whatever the plot needs them to be... HA-HA!
    ...Plot.

"Is this a mistake? Did it only take half the talent?"
The solution my dad offered was that perhaps it took the mark from from the other side, pulling it THROUGH the flanks and taken off with the other one, catching onto and dragging the talent along with it.

I always figured cutie marks don't just represent a talent, they are the outward sign of intrinsic pony magic (which unicorns happen to be able to harness directly). And they're directly tied to a pony's destiny (which is why when they swapped, they ended up with terrible dysfunctional destinies).
Remember when the royal sisters passed their powers to Twilight so Tirek couldn't get to them? Their cutie marks disappeared in that scene!
So yes, magic. The answer is magic. Just like zap apples.

It's good to see another RiM. I still can't tell whether or not this was my favorite premiere, but it certainly is a nominee. Either way, your shenanigans are always enjoyable when breaking down an episode and I wish I had more to say, but your large vocabulary has left me dumbfounded once again and I'm left just laughing at silly jokes you put on the screen.

I think that the removal of the cutie mark is more than just that. The spell that whatsherface casts is probably more of a nullification than a removal. The taking of the cutie mark is probably required because of magical magufins and how we don't understand how they work. The 'cutiemark' that they receive can be seen pulsing when a pony tries to do their special talent which is probably a visual representation of the nullification.

Honestly, I don't really see what all the confusion is about Cutie Marks. The concept seems rather simple to me.
Cutie Marks are a physical representation of one's talent. They appear when one realizes (for themselves) what that talent is. They can not be told what their talent is by others (no matter how obvious it may seem) because, well, they'd probably react as most humans would; by being modest and denying the praise.
    Example:
"Wow *insert name here* you're really great at singing! You could totally make a career out of it!"
"Oh, no, I'm really not that good. You're just saying that to be nice!"
Now, in answer to the question of "why does removing the Cutie Mark take away the talent?" The answer is, it does not. The spell that Starlight Glimmer cast was a repression spell, designed to take away the physical representation of the talent (the Cutie Mark), and replace it with the Equal Signs, which act sort of like the handicaps in Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron". They keep everyone the same by force. Notice how whenever anypony attempts to use their talent, the equal signs glow.
Well, that's my interpretation, at least.

    • @magpie8351
      @magpie8351 9 лет назад +3

Maggie Schubert Oops, forgot the bit about "switching the Cutie marks." Again, the answer is that the mark is purely physical. Star Swirl's spell (say that five times fast) mixed around the physical marks, as well as mixing around their memories. When we saw the colors flashing around on the elements, it symbolized not only the marks being mixed, but their memories as well. That's why every pony thought that they had always had that job. Rarity had some of Dash's memories from being a weather pony, but still retained her fashion sense. Pinkie had some of AJ's memories of working on the farm, but retained her need for fun. So on and so forth.
That doesn't answer where either the Apple family or Sweetie Belle were during those events, but, well, I suppose every show makes mistakes. Maybe Big Mac and Granny Smith were chaperoning one of the CMC's many little field trips.

I have a partial theory for how cutie marks work. Remember how, in the Tirek episode, ponies' cutie marks disappeared with their magic? I think that cutie marks may be tied to a pony's magical abilities, and Starlight's spell was twofold: first, to remove the cutie mark and its associated magic, and second, to repress the unique personality traits of that pony. Even when their marks are removed, I think ponies still have the same interests and character traits--they're still the same pony, just stripped of their magical abilities--unless something is actively repressing some part of them, such as Starlight's spell thingy. As for young ponies, it's possible that the cutie mark is within them all along, waiting to manifest under confusing circumstances relating to the thing they're best at. They have the potential; it just doesn't appear and fully develop until... something happens. That part I have no idea about, since the circumstances for getting one's cutie mark seem to keep changing.
In short, a cutie mark is a symbol directly tied to a pony's magical talents. If it is removed, the magical talent goes with it; if a pony's magic is removed, the cutie mark comes too.
...Okay, that was a long comment. I'll admit, I sacrificed conciseness for the sake of a thorough explanation. Also, disclaimer: I seriously do consider this to be only a theory, and not the absolute truth. I'm not THAT self-centered.

Regarding the rather confusing concept of a cutie mark, I'd say that the mark is symbolic of changes in a pony's body/mental chemistry and magic. This kind of assumes that getting a cutie mark is roughly analogous to reaching puberty. Basically, once a pony - consciously or subconsciously - discovers their special talent, their body/mental chemistry and magic shift to enhance that ability or ability set. The marks themselves are merely a symbol of those changes.
In this episode, Starlight didn't take away talents. She altered a pony's personal magic so that their body actively suppressed their talents rather than enhancing them. The equals sign was just a coincidence that Starlight decided to capitalize on after trying out the spell a few times and continually getting the same result.
The 'marks' that Starlight took aren't physical entities but constructs of 'magical DNA'. Without said 'magical DNA', a pony would lack their enhancements and wouldn't be as good at what they do (though they would still have a good deal of skill owing to exercise and study and the like). The equals mark is a representation of the enhancement suppression. Once the magical DNA is restored, the body/mental chemistry and magic of the pony in question returns to normal, with the equals mark gone and the original restored.
To sum up, Starlight had two spells to do her work. One of them removes the magical DNA of a pony and leaves them blank. As this wouldn't have exactly the results that Starlight was looking for, she had a second spell that induced the suppression state onto said pony. Once the magical DNA is returned, the suppression state gets reverted, returning balance.
Regarding the episode Magical Mystery Cure, Starswirl's spell not only altered the memories of everyone in the town and the nearby countryside, but altered the magical DNA of the Element Bearers to that of a different Bearer. However, the enhancements did not match the skills and personalities they were now attached to, making the Bearers really bad at their new jobs. In this case, thankfully, the memory patch job was rather poor and puncturing it was enough to revert the spell and return the magical DNA (though it apparently left a copy in the Bearer it wasn't supposed to be in... perhaps that was the body's way of compensating for a lack of a mark).

This is my headcanon on how cutiemarks work. As Twilight mentioned, it is a REPRESENTATION of a pony's unique talents and abilities. But what I feel is that rather than being tied to the talent per se, a cutiemark is tied to how a pony perceives/views their talent; that it is more tied to the pony's psychology.
P.S.: To put it out there first, cutiemarks have been linked to both a pony's talent and/or destiny. I feel these are both true in a sense that most people want to spend their lives doing something they like and are good at. Same goes with ponies. Getting a cutiemark, a pony realizes what his/her talents are and therefore, what they are meant to do with their life i.e. destiny (because what is life without meaning right?).
Now that that is out of the way, this is how I think it works:
    1. All ponies are born with a latent talent. As a filly, they do not yet realize what their talent is. Therefore, they are blank flanks, the blank representing the unknown.
    2. When a pony realizes their talent (like Twilight finding out that she has a talent with magic) or destiny (like Applejack finding out that what she was meant to do is to run the apple farm), they will get their cutiemark signifying that they have achieve awareness on their talent/destiny. The mark represents their awareness.
    3. So in The Magical Mystery Cure, when the cutiemarks are switched, it did not change the latent talents each pony had because they are still themselves. However, because their cutiemarks were swapped, each pony kept perceiving their talent (and thus their destiny/what they were meant to do) as something else. So for example, Rarity (bearing RD's cutiemark, still showed a latent talent (and had a penchant for) for (weather) patterns, however, because of the changed cutie mark, she kept thinking that she was meant to do something about the weather. However, as this was latently not even her talent to begin with, she was not very good at it.
    4. However, in Cutie Markless, it was different because rather than being switched, the cutiemarks are replaced with the Equal Sign. So what most probably happened was that, each pony, seeing that their cutiemarks were equals signs, perceived their talents to be limited because they were 'equal' to every other pony. Like how in the episode, Sugar Belle, who had a flair for baking said I know I am not a very good cook..., at least not any better than any other pony in this town. Meaning that it is not that she lost her talent for baking but rather she just can't do it any better than the worst pony in the town (no wonder the muffins were terrible). This also explains how at the end when RD tries to fly faster, she could not fly/move any faster than the slowest pony who bore the Equal Sign (i.e. the rest of the Mane 6 who walked). The ponies still had a penchant for their latent talent (Sugar Belle tries to bake, RD tries to fly fast, Fluttershy tries to talk to animals) but were not able carry it out because they were supposed to be equal to the worst of the lot (ponies who cant bake, fly or talk to animals). The flashing Equals Sign when somepony attempts to use their special talent is an enforcement of the equality. They cant be better or worse at doing something than anypony else.
Okay, this is a bit lengthy but I hope it makes sense. I am not a good analyst tho but I had fun thinking about this and I hope you guys had fun reading about it too (:

    ANTHONY IS BAAACK!!!!
I wasn't at BABScon, but I STILL LOVE YOUUUU!
I heard/read some call you a tryhard, but for me, your attempt really pays off. You're hilarious in your reviews and I cannot wait to see your next one. I missed your reviews. Almost as much as I missed having an MLP episode to watch every week. Almost. You're number two after the episodes, sorry but despite your sense of humor and your... way of doing these which are fantastic, nothing can beat the ponies'actual adventures. Sorry, but that's the way it has to be...
ANYWHO, what I'm trying to get across is... DO MORE OF THIS PLEASE! because it pleases me.
PS Pinkie Pie is best pone and this episode proves it once again.
PPS. You mentioned communism. Which is something this episode was all but about. But I can forgive you that, since you probably realize that this episode wasn't about class equality. I'm assuming you just went with the popular, albeit wrong impression that plagues most of this fandom for laughs.
Kinda makes it hard to see the difference between those who think this is about communism, or those who see that it isn't but continue calling it that for humor's sake.
PPPS this comment's gone on too long already, time to stop typing I think. But not before I say one more thing: ANTHONY C IS BACK ON THE SCENE! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! (\^.^/)

Something I've noticed, not only with the premier but with this new season so far, is that they are really going all out with facial expressions.
Where as before a goofy face was rare, with really only pinkie doing it, I've noticed that all the characters are being way more expressive.
It's like the shows creators have gone 'fuck it, they buy the toys anyway so we don't have to make them cute, goofiness all round'.

The spell discount Marx used did remove the symbol and the talent and stored them together. When one was taken, both were taken, when one received both received. When cutie marks were switched talents weren't, just the ponies memories and sense of self. Blank flanks do have a talent, the cutie mark comes when the discover it in full.

I think I finally figured it out. Now it's just a headcanon solution, but I do think it makes a lot of sense. The reason a cutie mark has to be removed is that once it exists it cannot ever be destroyed, as it is a part of a pony that is every bit alive and full of magic as the pony it belongs to is. Sure it's not a sentient being but, but it's alive the way plants are alive, in a sense. That's why cutie marks disappear when Tirek steals a pony's magic. As for other cutie mark related shenaniganary, because a cutie mark is a part of you that stems from deep within, it can never be fully untethered from you. As such, ponies who've had their marks swapped by magical means will still be naturally good at the special talent which earned them their cutie mark, and those who have had their marks removed all together will always feel a tug at their hearts leading them in their mark's direction, which is what the equal signs are suppressing with a feeling of hollow numbness.
But that's just my take on it.

I think that the Cutie Mark was a representation of the talent, but it also goes wherever the talent goes, so removing the talent, like what Starlight was doing, also drags the mark along for the ride as a side effect.

My theory (wip) about the cutie mark thing, is that,
When a pony realises their special talent, his or her cutie mark appears as a physical representation and reminder of their talent, the cutie mark holds some of the actual talent, and the longer the cutie mark is present, the more of the talent is transferred into it, after a few years, most of the talent is held in the cutie mark, and that bond that we saw being severed is created. This is why the ponies strength has ebbed out of them with the cutie mark gone, after a while of being without a cutie mark, their strength would return to the same level as the others in the village. The replacement mark is put there to hold the position of the old cutie mark, making it easier to place the original in storage. This would explain why in that episode with the newspaper and the CMC (its name escapes me), snips and snails' cutie marks are only on their fur.
TL:DR: cutie marks hold some of the talent, the amount of which increases over time.
This is just a theory though, so don't take it too seriously.

Out of the reviews of this episode that I've seen, you are the only one to have even mentioned the 'you can't have a nightmare, if you never dream' line from the song. And for some reason actually mentioning it just made me enjoy the review a bit more.

5:25 To be fair, Anthony, Fluttershy has been shown to be too timid to fly in some cases. Heck, in one episode her wings actually locked themselves to her sides when she was scared, so it fits that she wouldn't think to take the fastest route when she's forced to do a task that terrifies her.

I always thought that the Cutie Mark was a representation of ones special talent, and that the equal sign was suppressing everything linked to that talent, and the returning the symbol banished the equal sign.

Ponies have two cutie marks, huh? My Twilight plushie would like to say ''no'' to that theory. Other than that, this was still a funny review as usual, and i agree, i really like this season premiere too.

for the blank flanks, it could be that the mark is hidden inside of them when born, and the mark itself only appears when the talent is discovered.
