Watching this video has given birth to a new theory in my twisted brain. Starswirl's unfinished spell turns people into alicorns... but he couldn't finish it because he is PART of it. From one to another, another to one... so from me to you and you to me. A mark of one's destiny singled out alone, fulfilled. The mark of your destiny is now fulfilled. What if when he cast the spell for the first time, he became the magic which allows regular ponies to become alicorns? But in order to become an alicorn you have to finish the spell with a second half... you have to respond to Starswirl. His half basically boils down to "I want to make you an alicorn, prove you can handle this" and it puts into motion some crazy challenge which tests your ability to handle your particular brand of magic. The "new" magic Twilight created? The magic of friendship. It's like Starswirl's unfinished spell is one half of a wedding vow. Nothing happens until you say the other half. The other less fun but also logical explanation of what his spell is supposed to do is he wanted a spell to give ponies cutiemarks. Makes sense, that's why it messed with the mane six's cutiemarks. And I could see it, the earlier a pony gets a cutie mark the sooner they can start contributing to society. From one to another, another to one (again from me to you and you to me) a mark of one's destiny (a cutiemark) singled out alone (yours) fulfilled. So basically from me to you and you to me I grant you a cutiemark. It's unfinished because we all know "not even magic can make a cutiemark appear before it's time" Or he could be using it to give other ponies HIS cutiemark and Starlight Glimmer is using another version of the spell to take cutiemarks and replace them with an equals sign... it's fun to speculate. Great video, gave me new food for thought and good entertainment value. =]

The reason for its creation, the intended effect, why it involved cutie marks, how it "fulfilled" anything before it was "fixed". And how did Twilight actually understand how to "fix" the spell? It didn't seem like she understood what the new spell would actually do, and she was already confused about the original spell when she first read it.
You know, I wonder if Starswirl made that spell to switch Luna's and Celestia's cutie marks. They were the previous bearers, and a shift in perspective might have prevented Luna from turning into Nightmare Moon. What if it wasn't unfinished, but just made for two ponies who needed to fix their friendship. After all, understanding each other was what fixed the spell for Twilight and her friends. Maybe Starswirl died before he could enact it, and thus couldn't prevent Luna from becoming corrupted. I think it makes a lot of sense actually.

I like to think that Twilight’s “new magic” is friendship. She literally made friendship into a form of magic that can be used and manipulated, and since she was surrounded by friendship that was very powerful (combined with her incredible magic power) she was able to turn herself into an alicorn. There are a few elements (get it) to this theory: 1. You can only become an alicorn/princess if you have something to preside over. Celestia has the Day, Luna the Night, Cadence.....love. And now Twilight has friendship. (Ignore the baby alicorn. She doesn’t count) 2. Starswirl’s spell was supposed to turn him into an alicorn, but he had nothing to preside over so it didn’t do anything. 3. Celestia didn’t turn Twilight into an alicorn. I’m actually pretty sure this is already canon because the little energy magic doodad that starts the transformation comes from inside her (the magic was inside you all along, twilight.) This furthers my idea about her literally turning friendship into magic, and that becoming an alicorn is something that happens when you find what you are meant to preside over. Please please ignore the baby for all this to make sense.
I'm pretty sure Lauren Faust wasn't fired. If I recall correctly, she willingly left the show to pursue other projects. Further (as you kind of alluded to), I kind of give the writers a break on this one, because there was so much executive meddling going on. They made the best of what they had to work with. Just like they did with Equestria Girls. Hasbro gave them a ridiculous premise, and they did their best to make it work.
in the 360º animated spin (0:53) there is Josh scorcher's, Keyframe's, Ponyville Critic's, ILoveKimPossibleAlot's, Sweetie Bloom's, James the pony theorist's, Viva "Imatoonlink"'s, Toonkritc's, and Eliyora's OCs in the front row of the group of ponies. :P that was a nice touch to have those ponies in the vid.
Here's the whole thing about Celestia having divine/godly status: There was never really anything in the show that said that explicitly. All we knew about her in season one was she was at least a thousand years old, was a royal figure, and could raise the sun (and moon). Looking back, it's easy to see where people could have made that connection (that description does seem pretty godly) but since we never actually saw her do that much in that season, crisis situation or otherwise, it was hard to get a good grasp on her, for lack of a better term, "power scaling." Especially since season 2 established that anyone could raise the sun and moon with enough raw magical power, it just took an entire tribe of unicorns to do it thousands of years ago. Hell, look at Nightmare Moon, Celestia's equal, whose mighty powers in the season 1 premiere included turning into mist, destroying a cliff side, and upsetting a sexually ambiguous dragon.
Regarding problem #2, hang onto your britches, because I've got the solution: HEADCANON! You see, Celestia is a divine figure, but she is also mortal at the same time. How, you may ask? Well, if you mosey on over to another favorite show of mine, Avatar: The Last Airbender, you'll see that the concept of a mortal immortal being has been done, and done well. For although the physical body of Aang is regularly placed in mortal peril, the Avatar is a being which exists across space and time, and the show easily convinces us that Aang and this Avatar bloke are one and the same. So I put the question to you, viewers: is it really so unbelievable that a magic pony princess with control over the heavens can be immortal, while having a mortal body at the same time? I think you'll find that such an idea meshes well with the canon-at-large, all things considered.

Magnakay Violet Bingo. And when Celestia and Luna transferred their physical bodies' magic over to Twilight, they severed their ties to their immortal selves. If Tirek had been able to take Celestia's and Luna's magic directly from them, he would have gained access to their immortal selves as well, and then Equestria would be all kinds of fucked. But by transferring their magic over to Twilight, they ensure that, even if their magic is then later stolen by Tirek, he'll never be able to get at that boundless treasure trove of power. So, even if the worst-case scenario happened, and the mystery box was unable to Deus Ex Machina our heroes out of their predicament, Celestia had already won the long game. Their mortal bodies would die, but their immortal selves could still continue to devise a means to put Tirek down once more. Twilight and friends would never live to see victory, which would be an unfortunate consequence, but the world of Equestria and the reign of the royal sisters would endure regardless. But again, this is totally headcanon.

From now on I picture starswirl the bearded's voice as Christopher loyd. It's there. Permanently. Forever. Thank you Antony C. As for princess twolight? I hadn't even seen the show until 3seasons in and I was like, 'when does she become a princess' when I got into the show and saw the elements for the first time my thoughts were 'so she's gonna be a princess. Right?' Seriously the surprise of the fandom was truly baffling when she became a princess. I saw before I even became a brony.
Actually as we see in a later episode, 'For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils', that strange location Twilight is drawn into appears to be an ethereal plane of sorts since Luna uses it with Sweetie to traverse dreams. For what it's worth, here's my theory about much of this. Let's start with Star Swirl... Star Swirl was a great magician, but much like the fabled Merlin, he has great power but was never one to use it to rule. he created but his spells were never really meant for him. (And as an interesting side note, twilight refers to him as 'Father of the Amniomorphic Spell', which roughly translates to bowl shaping using clay. Forming pots. And being bearded, that quite literally makes him a 'Harry Potter'...) Star Swirls spell may be incomplete, but we also know he was prolific in his studies like Twilight. Therefore he may have been making several spells at the same time. And we know his specialty was time magic. So it's possible he may have simply never finished this spell because he got lost in time. Or maybe some other spell simply changed him and messed up his mind (*cough*Discord*Cough*). Now as for how Celestia knew it would work, it's shown in the episode Twilights Kingdom that she foresaw the return of Tirek in a dream. A vision. That's how she knew Twilight would succeed. Perhaps long ago she had a vision that Twilight would become an alicorn and did her best to help shape and guide her towards that future. Lastly I'd like to point out that the Elements off harmony have been defined since day one as the most powerful magic in Equestria. If they have that level of power, who's to say they haven't been influencing Twilight from the start, and when she finished the spell that was enough to send Twilight to a realm beyond reality, a world of dreams, where logic and reality is shape-able. Hence why Celestia could only transform her there. And as the elements and the tree have some sort of goal they're still pushing her towards, thanks to the castle, and the map she now has, it's clear she /and/ her friends still have some higher purpose they're working towards little by little.
And once again with his review of a season 3 episode, Antony C shows that he is the king of relevancy. We should all just go back and rewatch the whole show. Hey Antony, since you've found yourself going back in time why not review the first two episodes and see how they hold up as episodes of the pony show now? Meanwhile I loved Kung-fu Panda and all my friends failed to realize this is why but also I couldn't explain it. So thanks for that. Are you already working on the next one or are we gonna have to wait two years for the season five mid-season finale/every other episode of this season almost, review that I alone personally want to see. I really want to know how this is holding up with it's whizbangery and such. Do you spend all of your time editing, writing or finding a random tandem of handsome fandom companions to hold for ransom? I'll call him on this one, pacing was not evident in this one. The jokes in these videos have always made me laugh but that hymnal bit legit made me stop the three things I was doing, stare in disbelief at the screen, and ponder how this funny British man conjures these seemingly unrelated things out of his brain and form them into pure comedy.
It's interesting that everyone compares the horse tent parade to Disney, whereas you pull a very magnificent parallel to its ex-rival! Nice. Also, The LEGO Movie gave us a similar message.

At first, when I saw this episode, I didn't really get mad at the "alicoronation" of the protege purple pony, but I was a bit surprised at the songs strummed in the episode. I feel that episode was butchered too much, and because of it, got the treatment and response that it received. Good points were raised, and I for one of many, has received the point and message of the video, and I commend you on your words and framing!!
I loved Magical Mystery Cure, but even I knew it had issues. Thank you for talking about it in a way that really got down to the meat of the episode, and didn't just spat "wahh, it was rushed! wahh, twilight gets wings! wahh, I'm a baby!" like most critics of this episode have.

Yeah, my biggest issue with the episode is that she was rewarded with a title and breed/species upgrade basically for filling in the blanks on someone's unfinished work. Doesn't really seem like grounds for such a huge character change, doesn't it? A lot of what you brought up basically helped to reaffirm that. Good to see you again, ol' chap!

The main problem with this episode: IT'S TOO FAST. Everything is on fast-forward, and it doesn't stop to catch it's breath. It's a shame, because the concepts they're toying around with are golden, and there's a lot you can do with it. The concept of your cutie-mark overwhelming your will opens up all sorts of possibilities. Why do the cutie-marks make the mane 5 a sort of zombie, unable to do anything but the job that was unwillingly assigned to them? Do cutie-marks have a will of their own? Maybe being swapped unceremoniously "irritated" them and caused them to ruin the ponies' lives? I'M JUST RIFFING HERE! IMAGINE WHAT YOU COULD DO WITH THIS! PUT *ME* IN THE WRITING ROOM!
WAIT.... Wait just a minute. Elements of Harmony, Friendship is magic.... Did Twilight create the first and only spell revolving around friendship?... Ok so Starswirl invented a spell thats only use seems to swap cutie marks around... for some reason...And Twilight finished it... somehow... turning it into a spell preaching how they all became one or something? Or rather how the marks of their destinies became one... Hang on.... "The elements of Harmony may have been what brought us together but it is something much deeper that binds us." The marks of their destiny are obviously their cutie marks... Eureka! I think Ive got it! If what she says in Rainbow Rocks is true then she only helped finish a spell which means you have to combine both spells. Now Starswirl's spell is talking about a mark singled out and fufilled. Was he trying to unlock the true power of a cutie mark? Twilight finishing it turns it from a mark being singled out to them combining. Combining like the elements of Harmony to form the element of Magic! She created new magic alright. She created magic capable of binding the elements of Harmony to her and her friends! Thats why the crown was able to effect the Human 6 because all the elements were tied to the crown by this spell and why rainbow power is a thing. Its not something the tree decided to give them its something it had to because the elements of harmony are bound to the mane 6 eternally because of this spell. Shes not the Princess of friendship. Twilight Sparkle is the Princess of Harmony. Or my brain short circuited and I have no clue what it all means.
I'd have preferred only the talents and cutie marks be swapped. But not the memories. It would have made better sense. Applejack would be bucking apples, then notice she has Rarity's cutie mark, and isn't good at bucking apples anymore. So then she runs over to the Library and says "Twilight what in the hay happened to my ass!". lol

I think what ended up happening with the Mane 5 is that their soul's memories (as opposed to purely mental memories which the memory spell fixes) are what got muddled. And her plan to fix it was that, by playing on their urge to help their friends, they'd get hit by the odd familiarity and enjoyment of the tasks... which would be enough to cause the soul's memories to "autocorrect" themselves... or something.
You know what else might have been better? A destiny lesson along the lines of the one taught in Megamind. It would have been interesting if the reason why the 5 of the Mane 6 were so bad at their switched destinies was because it wasn't what they wanted to do in life. Rather it was what they settled for based on how the world saw them growing up with their switched cutie marks. The daily struggle of wanting to do something even when society makes it hard (think glass ceiling, and prejudice.) is a good thing to expose kids too. Especially because this episode could have taught both the lesson of the value fighting against the grain to do what makes you happy and the lesson of the reality of how hard that really is. If someone already had the cutie mark for the destiny you wanted, how would that change they way you behaved? Would you be miserable like Pinkie? Or trying to make the best of a bad situation like Fluttershy? It the same idea presented in Megamind, and you could absolutely have a friendship lesson thrown in there. I guess my main point is that Dreamworks really has their stuff together. It also could have been better if the spell had been designed by Discord instead of Starswirl! Thank about it. this is exactly the sort of magic that Discord would be into. We could have had an awesome origin story for the creation of the Allicorn Race stemming from Luna and Celestia's attempts to overthrow Discord! Maybe they weren't originally Alicorns either. This would explain why there were non-Alicorn rulers in Equestria before the Reign of Discord (See the Hearths Warming Eve Play). Even more, if the act of undoing the spell was what made you an Alicorn, then Twilight could have become an Alicorn because she restored Harmony to the Elements rather then creating new magic. This is a much better test for Alicorn-hood in a land all about Harmony then simply new magic.
Maybe "magic" is like a fuel of some kind, and a "spell" is just what it is used for. So Starswirl created spells but he didn't create the magic for them. But in that case, how did Twilight create magic just by writing some random shit on a bit of parchment. Someone once asked of this episode "did any of this really need more time?" FUCK YES!!! I'm glad you just said "maybe" to the idea that the pacing is bad, because to me pacing being good or bad is all subjective. It's like asking "is this jumper the right size?" it depends who is wearing it. I think Twilight and Celestia are in a dream world, kinda like what we saw with Luna earlier on in the season. I still like A Canterlot Wedding BTW, a lot of your problems are not really big issues, or not to me anyway, and the ones that could be, I'm not sure I really agree with.
NiGHTS music! Nice review! :3 I just really like how most of it is a musical and how it builds up. Very simple but I kinda had a pretty straightforward experience. I marathoned the the show up to the early season 4 episodes(not even knowing what people were saying about it or anything) so I was completely swept by the hype and mood. I enjoy seeing reviews and reactions to it though. Star swirl really needed some luck. I'm still a little salty about that _1 time use_ Time travel spell. Oh... but I *did* enjoy that episode
I seem to remember a mantra from the Princess Tutu anime: there is contentment for those who accept their destinies; there is glory for those who can defy them. I don't know if that adds anything to this, but, that's just some brain droppings.
There was a really good argument I saw concerning the Mane 5's memories. It said that the spell literally changed their pasts, and removed the rainboom. Rarity never discovered gems and needed a job to pay the bills (weather), Applejack stayed in Manehatten and tried to fit in (fashion), Pinkie Pie stayed on the farm (farming), Fluttershy never saved the animals and continued to be bullied, so she thought the only thing she was good at was being laughed at (clown), Rainbow lost the race and needed a job (vet). It was literally their true selves, and a memory spell wouldn't have worked, since that was what temporarily happened. The True True Friend song then fixed the timeline itself, so the ponies were back to the versions Twilight knew. Or Hasbro just didn't give enough time and energy to the episode.
I'm hoping that maybe, MAYBE, the season 5 finale with Starlight Glimmer will be like what you were saying, using traditional magic and smart wits rather than FRIENDSHIP CANNON HOOOOOOOOOOOH We're getting closer to it, the season 5 opener was very much the best example, where there weren't any friendship beams that turn all enemies into your friend, but instead having to be quick witted and thoughtful to get out of situations (fluttershy spying on Starlight being the best example) Plus, the fact that the Mane 6 WEREN'T the ones to save the day says a lot about it, having to rely on others instead. Starlight Glimmer isn't a powerful demonic creature like every other villain, she's a simply unicorn that has a different way of life and found dark magic that let her act on that way of life, a more down to earth villain that I hope and pray they don't ruin in the finale by giving her PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER, or something.

Celestia's Magic song room is probably an astral projection, Twilight's physical form being summoned to it could be interpreted as rite of passage to becoming an alicorn. But in reality the writers didn't think that far ahead.
starswirl the bearded was the pony that coronated the princesses and was their advisor slash/senpai in magic. (at the time they were fillies twilights age) he also invented a working time spell (not the one twi uses) created the spell to move the sun and moon which subsequently makes alicorns immortal and empowers them instead of just long lived. so yeah he's a big deal, if it weren't for him and the tribe leaders celly and lulu would never have been princesses. oh and he was directly responsible for the princesses getting their cutie marks. also Celestia helped make that spell so she is to be blamed to for it failing. As for why twi was worthy it was her understanding of friendship that ultimately made her teleport to the twilight zone. alicorns are the embodiments of friendship, love and harmony. celestia's defeat at chrysalis's hooves could be attributed (maybe even her defeat by nmm) was due to not getting her sun moving buff(starswirls spell of celestial body moving rejuvenates and empowers practically making the user immortal through constant use) and chrysi had her love buff and promptly beat the not a goddess celestia. alicorns are basically akin to j.r.r tolkien's elves.

Star Swirl's spell is certainly mysterious. The reason for its creation, the intended effect, why it involved cutie marks, how it "fulfilled" anything before it was "fixed". And how did Twilight actually understand how to "fix" the spell? It didn't seem like she understood what the new spell would actually do, and she was already confused about the original spell when she first read it.

You know, I wonder if Starswirl made that spell to switch Luna's and Celestia's cutie marks. They were the previous bearers, and a shift in perspective might have prevented Luna from turning into Nightmare Moon. What if it wasn't unfinished, but just made for two ponies who needed to fix their friendship. After all, understanding each other was what fixed the spell for Twilight and her friends. Maybe Starswirl died before he could enact it, and thus couldn't prevent Luna from becoming corrupted. I think it makes a lot of sense actually.

I really like the idea that the divinity of the princesses is manufactured to keep order.
I like to think that Twilight’s “new magic” is friendship. She literally made friendship into a form of magic that can be used and manipulated, and since she was surrounded by friendship that was very powerful (combined with her incredible magic power) she was able to turn herself into an alicorn. There are a few elements (get it) to this theory:
1. You can only become an alicorn/princess if you have something to preside over. Celestia has the Day, Luna the Night, Cadence.....love. And now Twilight has friendship. (Ignore the baby alicorn. She doesn’t count)
2. Starswirl’s spell was supposed to turn him into an alicorn, but he had nothing to preside over so it didn’t do anything.
3. Celestia didn’t turn Twilight into an alicorn. I’m actually pretty sure this is already canon because the little energy magic doodad that starts the transformation comes from inside her (the magic was inside you all along, twilight.) This furthers my idea about her literally turning friendship into magic, and that becoming an alicorn is something that happens when you find what you are meant to preside over.
Please please ignore the baby for all this to make sense.

Further (as you kind of alluded to), I kind of give the writers a break on this one, because there was so much executive meddling going on. They made the best of what they had to work with. Just like they did with Equestria Girls. Hasbro gave them a ridiculous premise, and they did their best to make it work.

Here's the whole thing about Celestia having divine/godly status: There was never really anything in the show that said that explicitly. All we knew about her in season one was she was at least a thousand years old, was a royal figure, and could raise the sun (and moon). Looking back, it's easy to see where people could have made that connection (that description does seem pretty godly) but since we never actually saw her do that much in that season, crisis situation or otherwise, it was hard to get a good grasp on her, for lack of a better term, "power scaling." Especially since season 2 established that anyone could raise the sun and moon with enough raw magical power, it just took an entire tribe of unicorns to do it thousands of years ago. Hell, look at Nightmare Moon, Celestia's equal, whose mighty powers in the season 1 premiere included turning into mist, destroying a cliff side, and upsetting a sexually ambiguous dragon.
Regarding problem #2, hang onto your britches, because I've got the solution: HEADCANON!
You see, Celestia is a divine figure, but she is also mortal at the same time. How, you may ask? Well, if you mosey on over to another favorite show of mine, Avatar: The Last Airbender, you'll see that the concept of a mortal immortal being has been done, and done well. For although the physical body of Aang is regularly placed in mortal peril, the Avatar is a being which exists across space and time, and the show easily convinces us that Aang and this Avatar bloke are one and the same.
So I put the question to you, viewers: is it really so unbelievable that a magic pony princess with control over the heavens can be immortal, while having a mortal body at the same time? I think you'll find that such an idea meshes well with the canon-at-large, all things considered.

Magnakay Violet Bingo. And when Celestia and Luna transferred their physical bodies' magic over to Twilight, they severed their ties to their immortal selves.
If Tirek had been able to take Celestia's and Luna's magic directly from them, he would have gained access to their immortal selves as well, and then Equestria would be all kinds of fucked. But by transferring their magic over to Twilight, they ensure that, even if their magic is then later stolen by Tirek, he'll never be able to get at that boundless treasure trove of power.
So, even if the worst-case scenario happened, and the mystery box was unable to Deus Ex Machina our heroes out of their predicament, Celestia had already won the long game. Their mortal bodies would die, but their immortal selves could still continue to devise a means to put Tirek down once more. Twilight and friends would never live to see victory, which would be an unfortunate consequence, but the world of Equestria and the reign of the royal sisters would endure regardless.
But again, this is totally headcanon.

I hadn't even seen the show until 3seasons in and I was like, 'when does she become a princess' when I got into the show and saw the elements for the first time my thoughts were 'so she's gonna be a princess. Right?' Seriously the surprise of the fandom was truly baffling when she became a princess. I saw before I even became a brony.

Actually as we see in a later episode, 'For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils', that strange location Twilight is drawn into appears to be an ethereal plane of sorts since Luna uses it with Sweetie to traverse dreams.
For what it's worth, here's my theory about much of this. Let's start with Star Swirl...
Star Swirl was a great magician, but much like the fabled Merlin, he has great power but was never one to use it to rule. he created but his spells were never really meant for him. (And as an interesting side note, twilight refers to him as 'Father of the Amniomorphic Spell', which roughly translates to bowl shaping using clay. Forming pots. And being bearded, that quite literally makes him a 'Harry Potter'...)
Star Swirls spell may be incomplete, but we also know he was prolific in his studies like Twilight. Therefore he may have been making several spells at the same time. And we know his specialty was time magic. So it's possible he may have simply never finished this spell because he got lost in time. Or maybe some other spell simply changed him and messed up his mind (*cough*Discord*Cough*).
Now as for how Celestia knew it would work, it's shown in the episode Twilights Kingdom that she foresaw the return of Tirek in a dream. A vision. That's how she knew Twilight would succeed. Perhaps long ago she had a vision that Twilight would become an alicorn and did her best to help shape and guide her towards that future.
Lastly I'd like to point out that the Elements off harmony have been defined since day one as the most powerful magic in Equestria. If they have that level of power, who's to say they haven't been influencing Twilight from the start, and when she finished the spell that was enough to send Twilight to a realm beyond reality, a world of dreams, where logic and reality is shape-able. Hence why Celestia could only transform her there. And as the elements and the tree have some sort of goal they're still pushing her towards, thanks to the castle, and the map she now has, it's clear she /and/ her friends still have some higher purpose they're working towards little by little.
And once again with his review of a season 3 episode, Antony C shows that he is the king of relevancy.
We should all just go back and rewatch the whole show.

The jokes in these videos have always made me laugh but that hymnal bit legit made me stop the three things I was doing, stare in disbelief at the screen, and ponder how this funny British man conjures these seemingly unrelated things out of his brain and form them into pure comedy.
It's interesting that everyone compares the horse tent parade to Disney, whereas you pull a very magnificent parallel to its ex-rival! Nice. Also, The LEGO Movie gave us a similar message.

At first, when I saw this episode, I didn't really get mad at the "alicoronation" of the protege purple pony, but I was a bit surprised at the songs strummed in the episode. I feel that episode was butchered too much, and because of it, got the treatment and response that it received. Good points were raised, and I for one of many, has received the point and message of the video, and I commend you on your words and framing!!

I loved Magical Mystery Cure, but even I knew it had issues. Thank you for talking about it in a way that really got down to the meat of the episode, and didn't just spat "wahh, it was rushed! wahh, twilight gets wings! wahh, I'm a baby!" like most critics of this episode have.

Yeah, my biggest issue with the episode is that she was rewarded with a title and breed/species upgrade basically for filling in the blanks on someone's unfinished work. Doesn't really seem like grounds for such a huge character change, doesn't it? A lot of what you brought up basically helped to reaffirm that. Good to see you again, ol' chap!

The main problem with this episode: IT'S TOO FAST. Everything is on fast-forward, and it doesn't stop to catch it's breath. It's a shame, because the concepts they're toying around with are golden, and there's a lot you can do with it. The concept of your cutie-mark overwhelming your will opens up all sorts of possibilities. Why do the cutie-marks make the mane 5 a sort of zombie, unable to do anything but the job that was unwillingly assigned to them? Do cutie-marks have a will of their own? Maybe being swapped unceremoniously "irritated" them and caused them to ruin the ponies' lives? I'M JUST RIFFING HERE! IMAGINE WHAT YOU COULD DO WITH THIS! PUT *ME* IN THE WRITING ROOM!
WAIT.... Wait just a minute. Elements of Harmony, Friendship is magic.... Did Twilight create the first and only spell revolving around friendship?... Ok so Starswirl invented a spell thats only use seems to swap cutie marks around... for some reason...And Twilight finished it... somehow... turning it into a spell preaching how they all became one or something? Or rather how the marks of their destinies became one... Hang on.... "The elements of Harmony may have been what brought us together but it is something much deeper that binds us." The marks of their destiny are obviously their cutie marks... Eureka! I think Ive got it! If what she says in Rainbow Rocks is true then she only helped finish a spell which means you have to combine both spells. Now Starswirl's spell is talking about a mark singled out and fufilled. Was he trying to unlock the true power of a cutie mark? Twilight finishing it turns it from a mark being singled out to them combining. Combining like the elements of Harmony to form the element of Magic! She created new magic alright. She created magic capable of binding the elements of Harmony to her and her friends! Thats why the crown was able to effect the Human 6 because all the elements were tied to the crown by this spell and why rainbow power is a thing. Its not something the tree decided to give them its something it had to because the elements of harmony are bound to the mane 6 eternally because of this spell. Shes not the Princess of friendship. Twilight Sparkle is the Princess of Harmony.
Or my brain short circuited and I have no clue what it all means.
I'd have preferred only the talents and cutie marks be swapped. But not the memories. It would have made better sense. Applejack would be bucking apples, then notice she has Rarity's cutie mark, and isn't good at bucking apples anymore. So then she runs over to the Library and says "Twilight what in the hay happened to my ass!". lol

I think what ended up happening with the Mane 5 is that their soul's memories (as opposed to purely mental memories which the memory spell fixes) are what got muddled. And her plan to fix it was that, by playing on their urge to help their friends, they'd get hit by the odd familiarity and enjoyment of the tasks... which would be enough to cause the soul's memories to "autocorrect" themselves... or something.
Antony is always so fun to listen to.

You know what else might have been better?
A destiny lesson along the lines of the one taught in Megamind. It would have been interesting if the reason why the 5 of the Mane 6 were so bad at their switched destinies was because it wasn't what they wanted to do in life. Rather it was what they settled for based on how the world saw them growing up with their switched cutie marks. The daily struggle of wanting to do something even when society makes it hard (think glass ceiling, and prejudice.) is a good thing to expose kids too. Especially because this episode could have taught both the lesson of the value fighting against the grain to do what makes you happy and the lesson of the reality of how hard that really is. If someone already had the cutie mark for the destiny you wanted, how would that change they way you behaved? Would you be miserable like Pinkie? Or trying to make the best of a bad situation like Fluttershy? It the same idea presented in Megamind, and you could absolutely have a friendship lesson thrown in there. I guess my main point is that Dreamworks really has their stuff together.
It also could have been better if the spell had been designed by Discord instead of Starswirl! Thank about it. this is exactly the sort of magic that Discord would be into. We could have had an awesome origin story for the creation of the Allicorn Race stemming from Luna and Celestia's attempts to overthrow Discord! Maybe they weren't originally Alicorns either. This would explain why there were non-Alicorn rulers in Equestria before the Reign of Discord (See the Hearths Warming Eve Play). Even more, if the act of undoing the spell was what made you an Alicorn, then Twilight could have become an Alicorn because she restored Harmony to the Elements rather then creating new magic. This is a much better test for Alicorn-hood in a land all about Harmony then simply new magic.

Nice review! :3 I just really like how most of it is a musical and how it builds up. Very simple but I kinda had a pretty straightforward experience. I marathoned the the show up to the early season 4 episodes(not even knowing what people were saying about it or anything) so I was completely swept by the hype and mood. I enjoy seeing reviews and reactions to it though.
Star swirl really needed some luck. I'm still a little salty about that _1 time use_ Time travel spell. Oh... but I *did* enjoy that episode
I seem to remember a mantra from the Princess Tutu anime: there is contentment for those who accept their destinies; there is glory for those who can defy them. I don't know if that adds anything to this, but, that's just some brain droppings.
There was a really good argument I saw concerning the Mane 5's memories. It said that the spell literally changed their pasts, and removed the rainboom. Rarity never discovered gems and needed a job to pay the bills (weather), Applejack stayed in Manehatten and tried to fit in (fashion), Pinkie Pie stayed on the farm (farming), Fluttershy never saved the animals and continued to be bullied, so she thought the only thing she was good at was being laughed at (clown), Rainbow lost the race and needed a job (vet). It was literally their true selves, and a memory spell wouldn't have worked, since that was what temporarily happened. The True True Friend song then fixed the timeline itself, so the ponies were back to the versions Twilight knew.
Or Hasbro just didn't give enough time and energy to the episode.

We're getting closer to it, the season 5 opener was very much the best example, where there weren't any friendship beams that turn all enemies into your friend, but instead having to be quick witted and thoughtful to get out of situations (fluttershy spying on Starlight being the best example)
Plus, the fact that the Mane 6 WEREN'T the ones to save the day says a lot about it, having to rely on others instead. Starlight Glimmer isn't a powerful demonic creature like every other villain, she's a simply unicorn that has a different way of life and found dark magic that let her act on that way of life, a more down to earth villain that I hope and pray they don't ruin in the finale by giving her PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER, or something.

Lauren Faust was not fired nor were her ideas scrapped. She left the show of her volition and her ideas were still used throughout the show.
Celestia's Magic song room is probably an astral projection, Twilight's physical form being summoned to it could be interpreted as rite of passage to becoming an alicorn. But in reality the writers didn't think that far ahead.
starswirl the bearded was the pony that coronated the princesses and was their advisor slash/senpai in magic. (at the time they were fillies twilights age) he also invented a working time spell (not the one twi uses) created the spell to move the sun and moon which subsequently makes alicorns immortal and empowers them instead of just long lived. so yeah he's a big deal, if it weren't for him and the tribe leaders celly and lulu would never have been princesses. oh and he was directly responsible for the princesses getting their cutie marks. also Celestia helped make that spell so she is to be blamed to for it failing.
