An older man would have the skin thick enough and the wisdom to call people’s BS and be able to navigate it .. but here we’ve got someone who’s not quite experienced and weathered enough to be able to cope with an onslaught from multiple fronts (employers, family, life itself). He said $37K that's $18 an hour, why are you worried about a messily job like that?...in Dallas Tx you can probably find a job that will pay you that tomorrow. Step one go get another job, step two the day before you start the new job, walk in to the persons office who called you in to meet with their attorney and simply say I quit effective immediately I'll just swing by HR on my way out and make sure they know. Don't tell them anything at all about your new job if they ask, don't even tell them you aren't going to the other company just let them spin their wheels trying to figure all that stuff out on their own. These people don't run your life, you are 21 and thinking about getting married and trying to tackle some debt, as soon as you are settle in your new job go get some part time work stocking shelves at Walmart or something, now have you girlfriend hustle and do the same thing you can both work 60 hours a week, just let all your employers know you need a particular day off and you both sync up your work schedules so you have one day off together so you can have a set time together each week...with sooooo many jobs out there you should not feel trapped in anything....if you guys hustle for the next couple years you can set yourselves up for success you can make $50K easy if you really wanna hustle

He is twentyone comes from a culture where the young are expected to respect their elders (resp. to shut up). Likely he got the fear of being unemployed instilled into him (no matter what his employment chances are, and likely they are good). He works for a SHADY company that got lawyers involved. Over a 38k job. Even IF he had signed a non-compete clause, it would not hold up in court.
He could of course get a lawyer involved and HE would have to pay for those services. I does not sound like he can ask his parents for advice or like he has an attorney in the family that could tell the company on his behalf that they can f**k themselves.
I do not think he parades victimhood around - he is obviously taken advantage of. The worst offenders are of course his current employers.
His family seems to be useless as backup.
Then there is the collegue that should have planned better (she knew the company culture and SHE got herself a job and convinced him to leave with her. By the other company that could have told him the legal details (there are always ways to circumvent legal traps, they just could not be bothered to help him out NOW that there are unexpected problems - unexpected for him).

It's 38k a year, you can make that as a McDonald's shift lead. What's the issue?

The only thing bad about the situation is the job and he can get another one anywhere (temporary or permanent) rather quickly. If he's about to move then he should already have 1st months rent and security deposit paid, so another payment isnt due until next month. Student loans are still on deferment (i think). Fiancee should understand your situation or you need a new one. Listen to dave and BOOM, you're stress and drama free. The only way he doesnt do this is that he likes the "status" of his escro job over anything else he can get thats comparable or pays more. I bet he can get paid more if he gets out of his comfort zone, stop letting companies punk him and stop playing victim.

Bro….dude makes less than $40k and they’re threatening him with legal action if he leaves?? I don’t buy it. Something’s fishy here. But even if it’s all above board, you can make $40k with part time work. Stop being a victim in your own story kid.

I think this pandemic has taught people the importance of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn't mean security rather having different investments is the real deal.
