Johnny Ramone hated this song. He was actually super right wing and didn't want to record a song criticizing Reagan, who he was a big supporter of. He and Joey argued about this song a lot.
Funny fact, Joey and DeeDee were anti Reagan, Johnny and Marky were pretty conservative and supported Reagan.........they never intended on releasing this song in the 🇺🇸
It was more a protest over the visit to Germany. The irony that this was done in Germany and the reference, let alone the fact that it was the inspiration for the song, was missed means either they are unaware or toning the reference down for their German audience. You don't tone down punk, it's implicitly rebellious!

I listened to the music because I loved everything about it and now that I’m In my mid 40’s I find it quite disturbing that bands still try to get a political point across to the young and fragile developing minds of the youth. When I cover this song, I make a joke about how “their point of view” about Reagan not being liked but I’ll add that he was still their president for 8 years just like president Trump will be. IT REALLY FUCKING PISSES PEOPLE THE FUCK OFF!! 😂😂 Fuck em!
“he wasnt that cool as an actor or president so the ramones wrote a song about him.” uhh pretty sure he wrote the song cause he did like him, and him visiting bitburg is when he started feeling different towards the president. i think like half the ramones were reublicans.
Not very cool as an actor or a president? This is how these guys sum up Ronald Reagan, one of the greatest US presidents who survived an assassination attempt, presided over the demise of the Soviet Union, and ushered in an era of economic prosperity and national pride, and international respect. Not that cool? Reagan was Awesome! By the way how many hits have these clowns had?
Too bad the singer knows so little about history that he doesn't realize that compared to the last three Presidents we've had, Ronald Reagan was friggin' great!
I agree, mate. Imagine If Reagan was a Democrat. Then those who get their political knowledge from pop culture, satire TV programs, would probable have a more favorable opinion of him. You can really tell when someone knows jack shit about politics as soon as they open their mouths on the subject.

Reagan didn't end the USSR, the USSR ended the USSR. They got in a war with Afghanistan, which did them in financially. They weren't prepared for how much influence the outside world in terms of society would have on them and like any empire, it fell. Reagan had nothing to do with it whatsoever. All he did was give speeches and pose in photos as if he had something to do with it.
+Brian Blueskye It wasn't really Afghanistan either, the USSR couldn't really be bankrupted in the traditional sense, because the economy was completely resistant to recession, and there couldn't be unemployment, so it just kept creaking along. Every year since 1970 recorded 1-2% growth, in a permanent crawling growth, it just slowed down a lot compared to the 5% growth of the 60s, or the double-digit growth of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. When Gorbachev introduced perestroika, he introduced a reform to make the state industries more competitive, which meant that instead of judging by top-down state-quotas, internal prices were let float, and the industries were judged by whether they were profitable. The hope was that this would lead managers to be more efficient, as similar reforms led to restructuring of heavy and light industry in the West (the mechanism there was corporate takeover and junk-bonds--- this forced corporations to become very profit-driven). But what it led to instead, due to the monopoly position of Soviet industry, was to a perverse incentive to REDUCE production! The reason is that when you stopped delivering your stuff, prices would go up, becuase you were the only supplier, and it became easier to meet your profitability goal. So in the first years of the Gorbachev reforms, the industrial output actually SHRANK (this never happened in the history of the USSR, despite Afghanistan, and all that, they never had a year with less production than the last), and suddenly there were shortages of toilet paper. There were no serious postwar shortages before this. This made Gorbachev extremely unpopular, he was only more popular than the hardliners behind him. The point is that at this point, the middle-management could see a path to acquire ownership of these state-owned monopolies, and become billionaires. So when the power-structure rearranged itself around these future oligarchs, they just took over the parliament, and dissolved the state to reform it in order to allow them to take over all the industries, as they duly did, and only then did the Soviet economy completely collapse.
