Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice comes to us from Ninja Theory, who also made Heavenly Sword. I expect their next game to be called Limbo Katana. It's a story about a Celtic woman fighting imaginary Northmen, so of course it has a lot of sins.

I don't agree with the comment 'she could just go over the bridge but she keeps finding obstacles.' That is how mental illnesses work. For example, getting out of bed is something we all do but to some people its exceptionally hard because their brain won't stop. Symbolically, walking over the bridge is difficult for some.

I'd have to defend the marriage thing. It's not uncommon to Schizophrenia to fully develop in later stages of life, usual age for "enlightenment" is c.a. 20 y/o. In society like this, it's possible to step into marriage earlier, so Senua's Father could be unaware of his wife mental state, as the symptoms could not appear before.

The reason the game "takes liberties" is because it's not necessarily one massive hallucination. She IS being attacked by Northmen. Etc. not necessarily everything that happens is her hallucinating. That's up to the gamer to decide and interpret for themselves. As for your connection to your father, there are varying degrees of psychosis-we're meant to believe Senua's is very deeply engrained, and was made worse from watching her lover be sacrificed by the Vikings.

@@MayHugger yeah im with ya, unfortunately some fools take these things way to seriously. I mean, game/cinema sins aren't trying to be real critics, they're comedy/entertainment, and usually it's a complement to sin a game. Bad games generally dont get sinned because its just too easy, but the occasional times they do, it can be pretty good. But it's similars to comedians having roasts.
But one of the best parts of game/cinema sins is messing with the butthurt fanboys who take thing way to seriously. Generally, I'll rile them up even more, because it's kinda fun ngl. Some people need to go outside and touch grass.

the point he is trying to make is the game solely relies on the characters mental illness being her obstacle, which is fine except you take into account later him pointing out that the impact of her mental illness is being stretched far beyond its limit to justify the barriers put in front of her. Its very difficult for a game to present the struggles as logically consistent when its put itself in a position where every single literal issue the player character comes across must be tied to the mental instability of the character especially for a concept as involved as human hallucinations. As he said later this game relies on the main character basically never ever having a proper lucid moment throughout the entire thing which is just very unlikely to say the least.
Now of course you can say its a game its supposed to be out there and exaggerate certain struggles but 1)this is literally the core concept of the game and 2)the channel itself is game sins, the whole point of the sins genre is to be a mixture of unnecessary nitpicks/genuine commentary framed for comedic effect.

There are people that have best friends that live with them, go out with them, even sleep with them that dont exist in reality. Even when the person gets help and understands that the "friend" is not real, they can still see them everywhere. They go through their whole life having to learn to ignore that "friend."
I will admit that a case like Senua wouldnt be able to function at any capacity on her own. But it is possible to be as gone as she is. Sometimes they never become lucid. Besides, this whole game took place in only a couple hours.

People. Psychosis can mean ANYTHING. Various mental health illnesses can CAUSE psychosis. Schizophrenia is not the only mental illness that can cause psychosis. Illnesses like bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, PTSD, drugs and even sleep deprivation can cause psychosis. The fact that she sees and hears things is irrelevant because THIS IS WHAT PSYCHOSIS IS. Psychosis does not automatically equal schizophrenia, OK? I understand that this is due to the lack of proper education on mental illnesses, but this really annoys me.
There are also various RUclips videos of individuals recounting their experience with psychosis and MANY of them did not have schizophrenia. I've gone through psychosis myself and I do not have schizophrenia; I have bipolar and if my mania is bad, I see things that aren't there and hear things that aren't there. If my depression is bad, same thing. The world looks visually contorted and surreal.
Look at paintings of Vincent van Gogh (who had bipolar disorder). The odd visual distortions are a great example of how your perception can go off.

Hi Dart. I'd say you either didn't get or didn't want to get one thing about this game ( I take the latter into consideration, because your job would have been pretty hard if you would have included that:) Apart from the very ending all of this is happening in Senua's head. Her already damaged psyche cracked when she lost her lover to a viking raid. Remembering the stories Druth told her about the norse gods, she imagined herself going onto a rescue mission to resurrect Dillion. ( In celtic religion the soul of a person is inside his/her head. That's why taking Dillion's head with her was so important to her.) It was all one big hallucination with some flashbacks thrown into the mix until through some almost-miracle she got over Dillion's death and snapped out of it to throw his head into the sea.

I'm surprised Dartigan didn't sin how historically inaccurate the buildings and Norsemen looked, whilst you can explain it with it all just being how Senua imagined it to look, the giant stone structures and people with horse skulls for masks did not look any thing like real Vikings. Plus Garm was supposed to be a giant evil dog covered in blood, not a zombie warthog.

There is a Celtic Goddess named Senuna (alternate spelling Senua is attributed to her). A shrine to her was unearthed in 2006 and little is known about her. My head canon would have made your job harder still. I like to think of Senua from the game as essentially the first chapter in her rise to Godhood. (Goddesshood?) combine her "curse" and trauma with mysticism and maybe a dash of ritual botanical ingestion---there are tons of directions the narrative could be taken which enrich the experience beyond "it was all hallucination."
I really hope Taneem Antoniades and the rest of the team drew some bit of inspiration from that discovery, even if only the name. perhaps wishful thinking.
    Like I said Head canon.
Can't wait to see where they take the sequel.
oh and I may be repeating something from one of the other critical comments (I get the series is comedy, and the sinny-ness is all pretty subjective, and I am one of those rabid fans who mostly agrees with a lot of the critique in the comments---I take things with a grain of salt and wanna play nice) the game nor the devs truly specify her mental illness, or the severity. Yet another way they leave the door wide open for interpretation. The experience begs of us at every turn to suspend disbelief.
I for one believe this a step in the evolution of the medium, and how it interacts with narrative.

    This counter argument contains spoilers.
    These fall into three categories:
    1. would be a sin, if you weren't wrong.
    2. not a sin even if you're right.
    3. an actual sin
Note: Sin implies an inarguably negative trait. Tropes and cliches are not inherently sins. They are tools to build stories, and how they're executed and used determines if a product is good or bad, not whether or not they are used at all.
    1-Enslaved: Odessy to the West
    2-Celtic Triskelion, Senua's Celtic
3-Didn't want to mention the story, characters, acting, secret mechanics? Didn't think so. But yeah, the cutscenes are also impressive.
4-They aren't breaking the fourth wall. You are playing one of the voices/personalities in Senua's head. She's not impervious to dying, she's just not in real danger.
5-Not a sin, just good sound direction.
6-I think it's a long intro, too. So... 1 sin. Congratz.
7-11- B-b-b-bullshit. Also, while Senua's behavior is not rational, it is understandable.
12-Darkness is a code word for "mental illness". My significant other suffers from bi-polar mood swings and also refers to her depressive episodes as "dark places". It's apparently a common way to refer to that side of one's mental health.
13-Not a sin. You just literally related to the protagonist.
14-If you think it has no connection to the plot, you aren't paying any attention. It also doesn't pad the length as you can ignore them. Like the story with the Sword Gram, Druth's stories all relate to Senua. Be it not everyone mourning for a fallen hero, or Ragnarok.
15-Yeah. That's the point. We are not just trying to get to Point B, we are traipsing around through Senua's mind more than the island.
16-Not a sin. This is the first game where FMV has felt appropriate to me. These spectres represent real people that Senua has met through her life. They are both real actors, and real people in the story.
17-I agree, this was a good attempt to communicate a common symptom of psychosis, but the execution was fairly poor. 2 real sins, you're on a roll!
18-While easy I found the combat enjoyable when I discovered hidden mechanics, as well as when the game introduced focus in combat, and new enemies.
19-Throughout the game, the voices promise that Senua will die, repeatedly. They aren't trying to be subtle with this. Senua wants to die, but is barely pressing on.
20-So you add a sin anyway. This is the best irrational fear that they put in the game, and I've seen people freak out about dying too much. Ultimately it doesn't affect the game, just how you play it.
    21-See #15.
22-There are only three sets of puzzles with the gates, not a dozen. Maybe they aren't real, or maybe they are real and just have significant cultural value.
23-Not a sin, just an inversion of a game mechanic trope that is still effective.
    24-Literary references aren't a sin, they're culture.
25-Still not a sin. Different symbol though.
26-Still not paying attention to the game, huh? Doesn't happen that often, most cutscenes are intricately directed and not categorizable.
27-We will often remember things involuntarily, in this case Senua's memories are uncontrollably being recited by her voices. Clever, not a sin.
28-You took a way a sin, well done!
    27-See #18.
28-That's what you've been told by Senua and Druth, two non-norsemen. This may not be a burial ground, it may not be used anymore, it may only be used for certain funerals and not on a daily basis.
29-Not a sin. And there are two big talking heads that I remember, both Galena's.
    30-See #21
31-This is a continuation of #30, not a separate sin.
32-She gets up, she's not dead there.
33-Andy Serkis is expensive, and Steven Hartley did a fantastic job. Why don't you hire Harrison Ford to narrate your videos?
34-Bear with me here, but "Soul" and "Home" do not rhyme.
35-Did you watch the cutscene, he hits her with the weapon. Luckily neither he nor the weapon are real, so it doesn't do any real damage. How are you supposed to do this if it's a well written game, you ask? Maybe you shouldn't. No one is forcing you to riff games. Also See #30.
36-The scene is in her head just as much as the weather is. If Senua thinks something bad is about to happen, it'll rain and get dark. These things are the same, not separate.
37-The bridge did not break, she was knocked off. The sword might have broken in the fall.
    38-Not a sin.
39-Was your father put in a hole for hours or days as a child? Was his village destroyed and wife brutally executed? Was he blamed for every stroke of badluck or illness? My little brother suffered from psychosis, and initially it was constant auditory and olfactory hallucinations (ie smelling dead bodies, and thinking our parents were trying to poison his tea). Admittedly complex visual hallucinations are rare, but this is ultimately a 7-8 hour long episode. It's not like we see Senua sleep or anything.
40-Indeed women would not have become warriors. However, these people did not think Senua was mentally ill, just that she could commune with the dead.
41-43- If you want to complain about too many XYZ you can't give a tally for each one. That's just being desperate to get your number higher.
44-We don't know if these stories are genuine, or figments of Senua's mind. It doesn't really matter. For all we know, this is the sword we thought broken in #37. Now let's try to listen to what Senua said: I need this sword, it's important. This is the core dellusion and her mind grabs a mythical sword story (there are plenty) to fill in the details.
45-The sword has at least double the strength. Also these four trials are ALL DIFFERENT including an alternate worlds puzzle, blind puzzle where you rely greatly on your hearing, a chase maze, and a labyrinth. The only puzzle up to this point were the match the symbol puzzles.
46-Senua was leaving her birth village, and traveling to Dilliion's separate village. Zynbel is telling Senua that she is going to be a threat to Dillion. After spending time with Dillion, Senua THEN goes into the wilds because she thought she caused the plague and that her father might have been right!
47-You're angry at the game for giving you lots of cool puzzles? Get bent. If these were the same puzzle over and over you'd complain about that too.
48-The loading screen is hidden before the animation starts. You're seeing a glitch.
49-Short beards are easy to keep when your village has access to KNIVES. Look, his beard isn't trimmed, it's short but messy.
50-It took you 20min to solve this one? hah! You missed the point if you were stumbling around. The point is to use the binaural sound to figure out where you should be going or avoiding. This is a novel idea, at least I have not seen it in a video game before.
51-You're blaming a dead person, and completely missing the point yet again. The point here is to unconditionally trust people who are genuinely trying to help you. To someone with psychosis, following a sane person's advice can feel like a terrible idea, but you have to do it!
52-The entire game is meant to feel claustrophobic, like you're a passenger on Senua. Stop inflating your numbers.
53-Again, possibly her old sword, and she cauterized her wound with an unbroken sword. Or maybe it's a stick, who knows.
54-Does what it says on the tin.
55-This is basically a fever dream. Also you repeated another sin.
56-It's pretty fucking empowering after the puzzles with no sword.
57-Gave a sin for something you liked?
58-Sounded like a hellish voice in a hellish landscape. Also, Senua's father, the demon voice, created this hell inside her.
59-Those shadows weren't guarded by a Darkness Monster.
60-Aw, poor boy, have a pitty sin: 3
61-Perhaps these ruins have not been used in a long time and fell into disrepair. That explains why we don't see any vikings 'round here.
62-I agree, this was poorly done. Sins up to 4!
63-64-That's not a warthog, it's more like a hyena, with fully articulated legs, and a bigger front. Traditional boss fights are "damage sponges" now. I guess the time-to-kill on bosses should be comparable to COD. Also inflating numbers because you're desperate.
65-See #4. Inflating numbers by repeating the same sin.
66-With the upgraded sword, you cut through them like butter.
    67-Repeat.
68-OK, I asked myself this too. The answer is based on a bad assumption, that Zynbel knew they were sick or mentally ill or even cursed. In Celtish culture, mentally ill people were thought to be communing with a higher plane of existence. Thus, peacful mentally ill people could live in their society. They thought Galena could talk to their ancestors. After marrying her, Zynbel felt this was a curse, not a blessing, and tried to torture the "Darkness" out of both Galena, and Senua. The reason why Zynbel killed Galena is said explicitly: Galena defied Zynbel, and he killed her for it. Senua says "It's not the god's will, it's your's". Why didn't Zynbel kill Senua when she defied him? Because she had a fucking sword.
69-Impact and thoughtful writing. Now a sin!
    70-Repeating the same Sin.
71-Surtr was a Fire Giant, not a God. Fjallraven is not a real mythological figure that I can find, possibly not a God, at least not with a capital G. Hela is the daughter of Loki, however. High blood.
72-Boss rush. It happens in some games to show how powerful you've grown.
73-Celts had tattoo technology. It doesn't look like a particularly skillful tattoo.
74-I agree, I think this scene would have been better if Hela stabbed herself. Six whole sins.
75-76-Still not fourth wall. Also, ending on "I have more stories to tell" is a satisfying finale. The point being that Senua will live on with her mental health problems instead of giving up. Padding numbers.

I will admit, I haven't played this game yet because I suffer from schizophrenia and I found that the portrayal of voices in media to set off my own at times, though after this video (oddly enough) I might buy it for the switch. Also, going over a bridge for a non mentally ill person may be easy, and I can only speak for myself here, going over that bridge is extremely difficult most days when you have voices telling you it's impossible and paranoia that makes me believe the bridge will collapse under the weight I carry on my shoulders at all times, so I'll add a sin for a (albeit, understandable) lack of understanding, but remove that sin because of your own experiences with schizophrenia in your family, though you may or may not experience psychotic symptoms of your own, cheers mate!! Melina's voice acting removes all of these "sins" in my eyes, though this video was surprisingly humoruos at times

Dartigan, I admire you reuploaded it after either catching the mistake or it being brought to your attention. Sucks people have to be so nitpicky that you would need to correct yourself. Regardless of your mistake your videos are always professional and well made. I look forward to ever upload! Best of luck!

Gideonite Productions Saying that Andy Serkis played a character, and basing 20% of the sins on this, when he didn't is a pretty big mistake.

Fun video, but this game is a masterpiece. Also, I imagine the circles pans and closeness of the camera is meant to feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic for the theme of the game, more wide pan shots would go against the theme of the game and feel too spacious.

Why do you keep bringing up schizophrenia? It clearly states that she is psychotic at the beginning of the game

    • @sonofkabisch

Schizophrenia is the form of psychosis that causes people to hallucinate. Dev's didn't say they were using "schizophrenia" specifically so they could have some artistic license.

I like that the comments are taking the video more serious than the creator himself.

So...we know Druth was a real person. But the question is, is Druth's voice in this game his actual soul guiding her , or is she imagining a dead person talking to her.

If this is only about mental illness and psychosis, like schizophrenia and every foe is an hallucination, then I don’t see how this game is so interesting to so many. It’s sounds a little boring and yet creepy to me.

From what I gather it wasnt her mother that had the "curse". It was actually her father who gave it to her. I thought that was pretty obvious to me.
