I have. I once saw a professional comedian (live) react extremely poorly to a drunk audience member who was being a bit disruptive, but not really heckling. The comedian got angry and ranted at this drunk old bloke, who I hadn't even noticed before that. It tanked the whole event, not just his set. When it was over I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
It’s a tough gig…and unfortunately I really believe it just wasn’t the proper choice for him to host for that night. However, I could only imagine the pressure that gives to someone else who doesn’t have the courage as JoKoy. I looked at his performance with a curve and he didn’t disappoint. But he was walking on the shoulders of Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey/Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers. He just wasn’t of caliber to host. But I think at a curve, he did ok. Awkward. But ok.
Let this be a lesson for people who don't act like themselves. You will do something regretful. This performance was clearly unlike JoKoy. He already has a strong fanbase, so he didn't need to bend to the liking of others. Ricky Gervais is proof of that.
I think his jokes are okay. I think people got a list: one- funny jokes, 2 - people's straight faces/someone punching the host 3. winners ... Its just the same every year. Anyway, i like jokoy
He'll be fine. He's one of the only comedians for the Filipinos. They love him so much and there's loads of them. Even if the rest of the world don't support him, the Filipinos will.
Sure, but a comedian's sole purpose is to be funny. The next time you hear his name will be on the interveiw circuit where he will take the "Gig" of being a bloviating apologist for his failure to make people laugh. With his attitude, you'll be able to catch him Tuesdays and Thursdays at Ned's laugh bucket in Willow Creek in Idaho, with a show at 3:00 pm after he's done with the dishes from the lunch rush.
So I don’t think anyone here is familiar with Jo Koy. If you’ve seen his shows you’d better understand his humor. If you haven’t, well, then of course you’d be at a loss and I get why you don’t get him. Keep on rockin’, Jo! Don’t mind the ignorant hype.
okay, for those of u hating and calling him weird and other shit, shut up. if you don’t know jo koy, like i and his other fans do, then yall don’t understand these are the jokes. he’s dirty-minded, he’s known for his spot-on impressions of his filipino mother, his entertaining stories of his son, his witty comebacks with his audience and his perverting sexual jokes that has the crowd howling in laughter in their seats in a sold out stadium. i’ve been to one, and they’re amazing- he’s amazing. so, yeah, with people nowadays, these jokes are considered “insensitive” & “mean” while he’s categorized as “creepy” & “indecent” when these are just the jokes. he’s weird. he’s goofy. he doesn’t give a fuck about what people think of him. doesn’t care if his jokes “hurt your feelings”. he’s a comedian. this is his job. you pay him to say these things. this is just who he is. but most of all, he truly loves his fans. he loves his career. he loves his mom. and he loves his son. that’s what matters.
STRONGLY doubt that, his jokes were brilliant - YOU are just not his target audience that night. Example, I don't find Katt Williams funny but IM not his target audience when he does his skits and shows. This show isn't for you it's for the actors, joking about fangirling them, reading a bad script having to imrpov is all brilliant but common people wont understand it since YOU are not the target. :)
@jacobburns3515 actually the jokes are for the home audience, not the actors. It's a tv show. The actors most don't like getting made fun of but everyone at home does.
He should have played with being in awe of his audience like his mom/ a typical filipino would… make jokes about how fanatic Filipinos would be roasting him right now. Another angle would be to talk about how refreshing it is to see Asian film and actors being nominated etc. He could have also made a joke about how many Australians are playing iconic characters like Barbie, Princess D and whatever Jacob Elordi was.
I thought that’s the route he was going to take (your first sentence)…because then he would have really stuck to his brand of comedy and represented his culture at the same time
Someone tweeted, "Reducing barbie to a movie about ‘a doll with big boobs’ for a joke... Did you watch the movie with your eyes closed??? How did you miss the whole point? Barbie could’ve given you SO much material for clever jokes and you came up with *checks notes* big boobs?”
I get it. Hosting a show like this is intimidating especially when you've got to stand in front of Hollywood A-listers. But some of this jokes were rather distasteful. And we thought Ricky Gervais was brutal.
It’s not that they were distasteful, it’s that he didn’t write them well or deliver them well. Ricky Gervais is the rudest comic alive but he delivers with full confidence.
jokes are only distasteful when they're offensive but not funny. Gervais never got called distasteful because end of the the day no matter how offensive, he landed them well

It spoiled a lot of the jokes esp the "what? That's hilarious!". Maybe it's not content but the delivery because he just sounded so desperate for approval it was too cringy.
Ricky Gervais had the advantage of really being in the Hollywood circle (and having the time to develop material and not giving a f*ck). Jo, on the other hand, shouldn’t have taken the gig - his style of jokes was to make fun of himself, his son, and his mother. Being inexperienced with hosting, he probably said yes thinking it was like winging it as a stand up and an opportunity to branch out/represent Asians. BUT he doesn’t have enough experience in that world and know enough people in the audience to crack Gervais-level jokes. This is probably the first time he’s had to work with writers where he does not have the final say in the material that gets used. Add to that the fact that it usually takes months to test material in smaller audiences before bringing it to a stadium. I feel bad for him. Hopefully he’ll be able to shake it off and use it as material for his future Netflix specials.

The comedian got angry and ranted at this drunk old bloke, who I hadn't even noticed before that. It tanked the whole event, not just his set. When it was over I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
Jo was cool and real! Funny guy. No one is unique like him.
I’ve seen it but it was amateur night
It’s a tough gig…and unfortunately I really believe it just wasn’t the proper choice for him to host for that night. However, I could only imagine the pressure that gives to someone else who doesn’t have the courage as JoKoy. I looked at his performance with a curve and he didn’t disappoint. But he was walking on the shoulders of Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey/Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers. He just wasn’t of caliber to host. But I think at a curve, he did ok. Awkward. But ok.
I wish they asked Amy and Tina to host again.
That has nothing to do with it - no one was comparing him to anyone else - he just wasn't funny. He's good at Philipino jokes, that's all.
jimmy fellon? you serious?
@@MorbiusBlueBallsnope, Jimmy was never accused or found guilty of a felony.
Chris Rock and Steve Martin were great together too
Let this be a lesson for people who don't act like themselves. You will do something regretful. This performance was clearly unlike JoKoy. He already has a strong fanbase, so he didn't need to bend to the liking of others. Ricky Gervais is proof of that.
I think he missed the point of the Barbie movie.
Imagine if Will Smith was there
Huh?
@@yorocco1 Oh I mean if he made fun of Will Smith's wife 😏

Bring back Gervais! Seriously!
They would if they could. These smallfry awards are beneath Gervais
Should've had a lone voice in the auditorium mournfully cry "Where's Ricky?"
I didn’t even really like the Barbie movie, but I still understand the point and message behind it. This guy obviously did not.
de Niro's face.. he's like : "How does once prestigious award show turn into this.."
Very low. Didn't know who he was until the shitty joke. He's now like the "oh the barbie joke guy?". He just proved the whole point of the movie.
If David Letterman could survive the Oscars, I'm sure Jo Koy will be fine.
I think his jokes are okay. I think people got a list: one- funny jokes, 2 - people's straight faces/someone punching the host 3. winners ... Its just the same every year. Anyway, i like jokoy
Also, this is a tough gig and they didn’t really set him up well and they went with a safer option than yes, gervais.
@@chachi9525 I'm sure he's already booked weeks or months in advance. He'll just shrug it off and move on to his next gig.
Ricky Gervais. Whatever they paid you, It wasn't enough. 😬...
“I don’t want to sound like a creep” makes you sound like a creep
Jo Koy should've known that he got called only TEN DAYS before that gig because NO COMEDIAN WANTED TO.
IM FILIPINO AND ALL I CAN SAY IS YIIIIKES!!!!
This is his unknown territory. He’s not funny wake up
Well, now everyone is familiar with him and how much he sucks. Good job! You're a fan boy for a jackass

'big boobies'
This is comedy for 15 year olds
"hahaha yes, since Barbie has big tits, Oppenheimer has the most blood on her hands" it's real, that doesn't make it funny
After the second Barbie joke you can see Selana Gomez (I think) just disappointed 1:09
okay, for those of u hating and calling him weird and other shit, shut up. if you don’t know jo koy, like i and his other fans do, then yall don’t understand these are the jokes. he’s dirty-minded, he’s known for his spot-on impressions of his filipino mother, his entertaining stories of his son, his witty comebacks with his audience and his perverting sexual jokes that has the crowd howling in laughter in their seats in a sold out stadium. i’ve been to one, and they’re amazing- he’s amazing. so, yeah, with people nowadays, these jokes are considered “insensitive” & “mean” while he’s categorized as “creepy” & “indecent” when these are just the jokes.
he’s weird. he’s goofy. he doesn’t give a fuck about what people think of him. doesn’t care if his jokes “hurt your feelings”. he’s a comedian. this is his job. you pay him to say these things. this is just who he is. but most of all, he truly loves his fans. he loves his career. he loves his mom. and he loves his son. that’s what matters.
I've never been more confident that I could do a better job
You better keep your day job at Mcdonalds LMAO
STRONGLY doubt that, his jokes were brilliant - YOU are just not his target audience that night.
Example, I don't find Katt Williams funny but IM not his target audience when he does his skits and shows.
This show isn't for you it's for the actors, joking about fangirling them, reading a bad script having to imrpov is all brilliant but common people wont understand it since YOU are not the target. :)
@jacobburns3515 actually the jokes are for the home audience, not the actors. It's a tv show. The actors most don't like getting made fun of but everyone at home does.
@@SuperJay12jay Good thing the show tapes at night
He should have played with being in awe of his audience like his mom/ a typical filipino would… make jokes about how fanatic Filipinos would be roasting him right now. Another angle would be to talk about how refreshing it is to see Asian film and actors being nominated etc. He could have also made a joke about how many Australians are playing iconic characters like Barbie, Princess D and whatever Jacob Elordi was.
I thought that’s the route he was going to take (your first sentence)…because then he would have really stuck to his brand of comedy and represented his culture at the same time
yes maybe you
should apply to host the next GG , you have great ideas!
Wiig and Ferrell shouldve done hosting

@@markbaker330 mate he was making a joke and people are allowed to find jokes unfunny. Comedy is subjective.
My brain can not comprehend how these jokes can still be made on live tv
I can't comprehend how people are this offended. As far as comedians go, this is very tame.
If he knew how long it takes to prepare than why take the job, jokes on him. Keep chasing that money Jo. WOMP WOMP WOMP
and he got that money brotha
@@ND-OPSmoney AND this that will be the shadow of his career forever
Where's your money? You broke little kid with sunglasses. Nice one 👌
I think it’s more about representing asians. He didn’t do a good job, but the intent was there.
Why you don’t want any money?
I think it was a great monologue, going off script and making people laugh, heck he made DeNiro laugh, that’s all you need
not funny and cringe... feel sorry for him not having enough time to prepare
..
Are you kidding me? That’s his job. If he couldn’t do it, he shouldn’t have accepted.
@@yorocco1 that's exactly what I said... he got the job less than 10 days ago and he didn't do well
I can't even watch the video I'm getting second hand embarrassment 😭
@@yorocco1 Exactly. Koy’s jokes didn’t land not because they were distasteful, but because his delivery was awful. And they just weren’t that funny.
I know right? They just wanna diss because he's not fully white. 😂 Although the jokes sounded more true than funny. 😆
What was distasteful? They’re jokes
jokes are only distasteful when they're offensive but not funny. Gervais never got called distasteful because end of the the day no matter how offensive, he landed them well
On JoKoy's defense, like he said, he only had 10 days to prepare, which means no one wanted the gig. Howard Stern made a good point about this.
How is that in his defense? If he couldn't do it, he shouldn't have done it.
He have 10 days man. 10 whole days and couldn't even make a decent joke. He should only stick to Filipino, accents and his story jokes
I agree! He did fine with short notice. If you can do better, why they didn't select you?
@@SuperJay12jay Lol if you have to defend your jokes during your performance because no one's laughing, you didn't do 'fine'.

“Barbie is about a plastic doll with big boobies” no its not.
He’s talking about the toy doll. The movie is based on the doll.
@@blinksstayfresh2524 barbie is based on real life. No it's based on the toy. Without the toy there would be no movie. You're welcome
Listening to that barbie joke...what even..
It's disappointing the way this went down. Jo Koy is legit funny as hell. I can tell by this performance he was nervous and frankly out of place. These aren't his type of jokes or his type of crowd. A fish out of water.
Edit: He legit made DeNiro chuckle. Screw everyone else. That's a win.
He bombed. He was truly shit. All he did for the barbie movie was tear it down. They wherent jokes, they where slurs.

About the writters, it was part of the joke. He wouldnt say "i wrote the once you were laughing" if it wasnt for entertainment. For me, its brilliant.
It spoiled a lot of the jokes esp the "what? That's hilarious!". Maybe it's not content but the delivery because he just sounded so desperate for approval it was too cringy.
The irony of this as this is tame compared to Ricky Gervais ripping them apart for years and getting laughs
Ricky was brutal, but honest, which is why people can't help but laugh. This was just mean trying to be edgy.
FACTS! The Golden Globes is the winner in this situation with 50% more viewers increase by picking JoKoy to host. Everyone is so critical about Jokoy's performance but Jokoy brought his supporters and added viewers to the Golden Globe. Well done Golden Globes and Jokoy. The numbers don't lie. I don't even watch the Golden Globes. Good or Controversial publicity actually helps JoKoy in this scenario. Everyone actually knows him now. Thanks to everyone who has watched the videos and commented.
Honestly so glad the comments are pretty much in agreement that his presentation was an absolute car crash
Being rude and being funny are different
Sadly, a second stringer can't cut it.
Access Hollywood: Jo Koy's performance was controversial
Ricky Gervais: Hi, remember 2020?
Gervais was funny though.
Shock? Controversial? It was way too light if anything. He did fine.
It’s crazy to try and make “jokes” like this with so little hair 😂
“Dying is easy, comedy is hard” Edmund Gwenn.

The good, the bad, and the Jo Koy.
I’m an Independent Latino. Oh No Jo Koy you cater to Hollyweird. Just like KINGS PBD and Joe Rogan said - you have to be like Rick Gervals “Don’t give an ef” be a comedian not a pleaser.
I still love your art Jo Koy!!❤
You can tell how uncomfortable everyone was, there wasn't a lot of laughter, especially for his really bad jokes and like yeah. no.
Absolutely terrible choice.
Jokoy was funny and some of the jokes were hilarious. It's Hollywood who doesn't want to be laughed at. Just because when the camera panned and nobody was laughing, it doesn't mean that the joke wasn't funny, it's just they were offended at some point. Who cares?
