^THIS. The [Hollywood] audience just weren't Jo's kind of audience. The reason for his shot in popularity is because his material is something that the average/common man can relate to. In the case of the Golden Globes, these are elite/elitist high-brow crowd whose lifestyle is something that Jo really has little to no experience of or isn't familiar of (despite him now being a multimillionaire), so of course his jokes and punchlines aren't going to land like Ricky Gervais', who not only has already hung out with a good number of Hollywood celebrities but also has lived their life for quite a long time.

Jo Koy has been in bubble for a while now. He performs in front of these arena crowds where theyre all there to see him but as a comedian you need to perform in front of different crowds or else you can't crossover. Jo is too specific for a particular crowd.

It wasn't his best night and this crowd didn't know him so there's that added critical eye. I'm glad comedians are backing him and he was panicked when the jokes weren't hitting. I believe him when he says he'll make it right with the writers. The problem with these shows is there's so many rules for the TV network and for GG. It's a hard for a comedian like him to be himself. Schulz would be great in this setting plus all the comedians have a lot of notes of what to do and what not to do when their chance comes up. Hopefully whoever hosts next year will be given more than 10 days!

It's not just Ricky Gervais. Tina Fey and Amy Pohler did three years in a row and killed it every year. Then Gervais did it for 4 or 5 times and destroyed. There was continuity for like a decade where Golden Globes opening bits were the hottest thing in Hollywood awards nights. J Koy didn't continue that, so it seemed especially disruptive. Jo Koy does best in front of people that can laugh at themselves. All of his specials is him poking fun of people in the audience, or making jokes that apply somehow to those sitting in the audience. For a comedian to try to succeed in a room full of people that CAN NOT laugh at themselves bc they're so up their own a$$e$, and on top of that have probably the bottom 25% of sense of humor, is a tall order.

I completely disagree. The ONLY thing that might be arguably difficult was that he was given 10 days. That's it. Now, in my mind, I believe the best comedians can easily slap something funny af in 10 days, especially with a room full of celebs with so much history. Take for instance Gervais, all he did was call out every celeb. Shit was funny for the viewers and most of the shocked celebs.
Jo Koy was, plain and simple, not funny. To top it off, he started blaming the writers. Pathetic.

I completely agree. But in addition, I think 10 days is more than enough to prepare for an event like the golden globes, in my unpopular opinion. I just think it bombed for reasons like the type of audience. Furthermore, Taylor Swift was completely uptight and unpleasant for no reason, and made herself look worst than the night she got snubbed by Kanye. That was the funniest joke of the night.

The hard part of roasting celebs in front of celebs is everyone already knows who each other is fucking, what they do for a living, what they do off camera, how much money they make, where they came from, etc. NOW think of the last scene of 8-Mile when Em roasts himself and let's everyone know his personal shit. The other guy had nothin left to make the audience laugh because they already laughed at it. Any further jokes is just old news.
When Andrew roasts people at a show, we don't know anything about them, so when he says something like "why is this brotha covering his face, you know you the side chick, right?" The audience goes ape shit because we all just found out some funny shit at the same time.

Honestly, got tired of his Filipino accent jokes long ago bc they are all variations of the same jokes I've heard before... Me Asian. And discounted his success from his cast Filipino bandwagon.
