I live in Alabama, and I am so happy to see Dettling getting the love it deserves. I have the 49 month expression of the single barrel cask strength and it is easily one of the best bourbons on my shelf.
I also live in Alabama, and I completely agree. It’s also nice to have routine access to a good bourbon, in a state where that typically isn’t the case.
As soon as you said Holladay I rejoiced, that bourbon is so good. I live 40 minutes from the distillery and get to see all of the special releases in my area. It’s sooooooo good.
Thanks for keeping the bourbon hunt alive, Jason! Will definitely have to venture outside of NC to find most of these, unfortunately due to state control, but videos like this keeps things fresh in our never ending pursuit. Cheers, brother!
First off, as an Ohio native and an Ohio State grad, love that you’re in CBUS. As a resident of the Gulf Coast for many years, great seeing 2 Gulf Coast based brands on this list. K.Luke from the Maisano family from Ocean Springs Mississippi is excellent. Dettling out of Atmore Alabama is producing some great bourbon, especially the cask strength single barrel. Would also like to know your thoughts on your 1915 blend behind you.
Great reco's! I've had 13th Colony on my radar since you did the video of the Double Oak a while back. And I recently picked up a bottle of Found North 17-year Batch 6 after I watched your side-by-side with batch 5. I've only had one pour - but you're right. It is a flavor bomb! Definitely glad I picked it up even at $140. Can't wait to have another pour and share it with some friends.
Great video. Thanks Jason. Over in the Uk and I’ve got a single barrel, barrel pick driftless Glenn rye from the British Bourbon Society. This stuff is amazing. Found it similar to wilderness trail rye but slightly sweeter.
Spot On on your Driftless Glen review Jason. Will have to drive up from Florida to get more, but well worth it. Interesting side note, Sand County, Wisconsin was the home to Aldo Leopold ("Sand County Almanac") and John Muir ("father of our National Park system". two of our nation's most influential conservationists/environmentalists. I'm told they are up only 13 miles apart. Must be something in the Wisconsin water!
Great list! I’m in Indiana can 100% vouch for Hard Truth. The malted and caramel top notch, chocolate is good but comes across more coffee. Recently had 13th Colony Bourbon and loved it. For a 4-6yr thats crazy good.
While not a "new" distillery (founded in 2017), I think Milam & Greene is one to keep an eye on. Their triple cask bourbon and their port cask finished rye are really good. So good I plan to buy these again. Texas whiskeys are making their mark. Great channel! Your perspective is much appreciated.
I'll never understand why some people look down on sourced bourbon. Here's the deal... most bourbon is pretty similar when it goes into a barrel. Sure, the fermentation and mash bill can vary but many stick to pretty safe mash bills. Koval is one of the few who really just do whatever with their mash bill. Since most distillers color within the lines when creating their distillate that means your biggest influences are going to be barrel, aging/climate conditions, and finishing. MGP has a good base distillate and that gives a good spirits company plenty of space to create a unique whiskey. Sourcing is also a great way to get age stated whiskey on the cheap - you can buy time from someone else but you can't create time without actually waiting. It is very expensive to start from 0 and get to 10 year old barrels as a new venture... you know because you have to survive 10 years selling something (probably Gin and Vodka). All those bottles of non-whiskey you are making don't help you make better whiskey or build a whiskey following - It just allows you to generate income while you wait... and wait... and wait... and pray nothing happens to you barrels... and wait. TLDR: Sourced whiskey is perfectly fine if you are actually doing something with the sourced whiskey beyond just throwing it in a bottle with a label. Some of the better value whiskey you can buy is sourced because it's far cheaper to buy an aged barrel than it is to start from zero and build the inventory and infrastructure to create a good bottle. A smart company will do both - see New Riff.
I dont have an issue with sourced bourbon per se. I have an issue with these NDP purchasing barrels, finishing it with the new flavor of the week barrel, slapping some BS marketing story on it, and then charging $70 for a 3-4 year aged product. There are hundreds of bottles out there that fit this premise. I completely understand the rationale or why of it all but as a consumer it muddies the water IMO, even more so if there is no value added to it. Another point which you didnt call out is that sourced barrels are incredibly subjective. The product can have a different taste profile year to year if the same age, placement, and mix of the barrels isn't replicated. Looking at you Willet. None of their own distillate products have the same age or taste profile as when they sourced barrels, but they have the same label.
I can’t buy them all….. I stay away from most NDP, it’s just marked up and somebody else’s art or….. many brands we could insert here…. Adulterated and or flavored…. Pass
1000% agree on 13th Colony. Had a friend bring up the shelf offerings from GA and they're all so good. Gonna restock on way through GA on vacation this summer. Chattanooga is my other go to. Love just about everything they produce.
One of my favorites is Starlight distillery out of Indiana. They do amazing finished bourbons and my local store gets lots of picks from them. My personal favorites being the cigar batch, VDN finish, and their rye
Thanks for the hunt list Jason! I just visited the Rebecca Creek distillery in San Antonio and they have an excellent Double Barrel CS for only $55. Must buy.
Great Northern in Stevens Point Wisconsin has one of the best ryes I've ever had. They use malted and unmalted. They just moved into a new space, so I'm hoping their production can match Driftless Glen eventually.
I've jumped on board the Penelope wagon. So far, I've been able to find the cask strength, Architect, Toasted and just picked up the Rose-finished. All have been fairly easy to find in Ohio and the price isn't bad. Not sure I had seen anything from them this time last year.
Have you tried any of the Heavens Door series? I hound Heavens Door, straight bourbon whisky, last year @ Sams Club for like $ 37.00, 92 proof, I loved it!! I recently found Heavens Door straight bourbon cask strength, single barrel select @118.2 proof . Omg possibly the best bourbon I've ever had!! at least one of the best, LOL.!! Rick
This is a very informative video. Is it possible that you can post the entire list of the Bourbons you mentioned? This will be very helpful when shopping.
Don't sleep on Middle West (Ohio) and Cedar Ridge (Iowa), if you get a chance. Great pours and extremely reasonable pricing. In Texas, Devil's River and Still Austin are doing good things.
This is a great list. I've tried several these just trying to expand to lesser known distilleries. The best of these that I've tried is driftless glen. I had heard good things and while in Wisconsin for work I made it a point to check out the distillery. It was a small but really enjoyable tour. I enjoyed it enough that I figured I would buy a bottle just to add to my shelf. After the tour there was the quintessential tasting. I loved their offerings so much that I ended up walking out with four bottles! I can honestly say that this bourbon (and rye surprisingly) is worth the hunt. I'm currently drinking out of one of their glen Carens that I bought as well as a souvenir because I enjoyed the experience so much. If you can find driftless glen in your area, it is definitely worth a try. Great video and recommendations!
Drinking the 13th Colony, Driftless Glen, Ben Holladay, and Found North. Will keep an eye for the others. Few other favorites of mine are Chattanooga, Union Horse, and Stil 630.
Nice shout out on driftless glen. They make fantastic stuff, I will be at their distillery and restaurant this weekend. J Henry makes amazing bourbon as well, worth checking out. Don't forget about wollersheim and dancing goat distilleries in Wisconsin as well!
Glad you highlighted Ben Holiday. It’s a strong pick…..And driftless glen is underrated. Period!! And Dettling….forget about it…. So good…And Found North,,,one of the best that’s actually transparent. And don’t forget about ASW
Being from Wisconsin, Driftless is staple...and those single barrell, barrel strength offerings just check all the boxes....a worthy inclusion in any collection
Hey Jason, great show topic. Let me throw my local distillery Laws Whiskey House into the ring. Grain to glass, truly craft whiskey, with all the transparency. Their bonded bourbon is up 8 years old now (up every year) and the bonded rye is at 7 years I think. They do “experiential barrels” aka finished products, I’ve tried most and they’re all phenomenal! The guys on Whiskey Vault love their products, I’d be interested to hear your review.
Great list, J. Henry is one i'm really enjoying. Also Corbin Cash and Prideful Goat. I've been holding off on trying the Ben Holiday... will have to give it a try. Cheers & Have a Great Week Everyone
Love me some J Henry but it’s only on Wisconsin & Minnesota. They’re releasing a Rye this summer. 👀 also pull the trigger on Ben Holladay, you won’t regret it.
@@OutsideTheStar they are available through Seelbach's, got Patton Rd, La Flamme (which is amazing), and just got the Bellefontaine in this week. I'll keep an eye out for the rye. Cheers
@@mrjiggs8 heck yeah I got all those bottles! The Bellefontaine is my favorite. I’ve sampled the Rye and my goodness it’s outstanding. Happy you can find them online. Cheers🥃
Middle West has some pretty nice whiskeys. Their Ported Pumpernickel Rye in particular is a great winter whiskey. Their flagship Wheated bourbon is a solid pour as well. For a budget pour, American Distilling Co. Bourbon is a liter bottle for under $20 that is fantastic for its price point. There’s so much flavor for an 80pf crusher that I’m actually suspicious they secretly use caramel or toffee flavoring on the down low.
Love the list. I was able to pick up a 127 proof Single Barrel at Hard Truth last weekend. It's so good. I just popped my Found north 17 year last night and it is very good too. Going to keep an eye out for some of the others you mentioned.
Reiger in Kansas City has come out with some great 6 year BiB Bourbon and Rye the past 2 years. Their bourbon is really exceptional. Woodinville out of WA is also one of my favorites. They do some really great single barrels as well as some nice limited finished bourbons.
Great review Jason. While I feel the legacy distillers make the best bourbon & ryes and always will, it’s nice to recognize some good craft distillers or sourcers. One I like that unfortunately is only available in CA is Corbin Cash. They’re a 100-year old working farm who do grain to glass distilling on the side. Their Barrel Proof Merced Rye is good.
Been fortunate to attend two events where Corbin Cash was present. Theirs is one of the bottles that turned this "I am not really a rye guy..." around. They have a great story too, of how they got into distilling. Hope to visit the distillery soon.
Thank you for this video. Some I had never heard of and will keep an eye out for them. I recently had the Buzzard's Roost for the first time with pours of the barrel strength bourbon, toasted barrel rye and the char #1 bourbon. I was surprised at the depth of flavor and I definitely looking forward to the others in their catalog.
Solid list. Not necessarily a new “brand,” but maybe more local in NC. Olde Raleigh is blending some amazing bourbons In beautiful decanter style bottles and you have to give them a try
I have many of the bottles you reviewed, but some I may now pick up. I like Ben Holladay BIB, but have seen the Soft Red Wheat BIB, which sounds interesting. Buzzard’ Roost Barrel Strength is pretty darn good. Have not tried Driftless Glen, but may need to pick one up. Found North batch 006 is phenomenal. I am impressed with Fiddler Georgia Heartwood and Fiddler Soloist. 🥃
Union Horse Distillery in Kansas is my secret sleeper. Recommended to me by an alcohol distributor in a famous hotel bar here in Colorado - It’s not available in most stores around here, but all I need is one. They make and age their own product onsite, so it’s not sourced. I love their Four Grain whisky (Rolling Standard), but their bourbon and rye are also great for the price.
Great video. I haven't heard of a few of these, so I'll definitely be on the lookout. As far as Found North, I've had batches 3-6, and they are freaking delicious. Cheers Jason!
Watched this excellent vid when first released & was reminded recently about Buzzards Roost. I`ve heard they do a peated rye which I think is a terrific idea. While I`ve got no chance in trying it myself I wondered if you`d had the opportunity to try it? I know you enjoy peat & I`d like to have got your opinion as to whether peat & rye work together or not. I`ve seen a few reviews which suggest it`s very lightly peated which for me sounds sensible as you don`t want to crowd the spice notes. Perhaps if you haven`t tried it you might consider reviewing a sample?Btw, isn`t that Ben Holladay soft red wheat label incredibly distinctive?!

This was very timely. I'm traveling from Alberta to Nashville next month so I will add these to my shopping list. Curious about the song used as background music, I like it. Cheers.
Have been trying to get Found North since day 1 and it's doubtfull I will ever see a bottle despite living in Ontario. At east somebody is properally blending and finishing Canadian distillate and not letting it sit in the warehouses here gathering dust.
Jason, can you pin the list of your recommendations? Love listening to it while driving and would be good to add them to my Hunt List notes on my phone.
Are these around your area? In northeastern Ohio we seem to not get many unicorns or off label products not meant as a bad thing. Kind of stuck with a grocery store as our liquor store. Beer and wine are everywhere bourbon not so much. Not a fan of online shopping for bourbons. May have to rethink that but I certainly don’t want to get in a club that has fees.
Really like Green River's offerings, especially for the price. I see Pursuit United pop up on my feed quite often. It might be good, but man what a boring and ugly label; never attracted me to even check it out. They should step it up with something more appealing/eye catching.

Cedar Ridge single barrels 🔥
Hey Jason have you found anything like your Driftless Glen barrel pick rye from a couple of years ago. It’s my favorite bottle and I’m running out!
non chill filtered Green River vs Green River?
Have you tried Nearest Green?
GREAT video, but WHERE would one find these "gems" for purchase if they're not available in your specific locality, anyone? 🤔🙏

Ain't no liquor stores around here that are cultured enough to carry any of the brands that you speak of 🙄🤨
Really like Green River's offerings, especially for the price. I see Pursuit United pop up on my feed quite often. It might be good, but man what a boring and ugly label; never attracted me to even check it out. They should step it up with something more appealing/eye catching.
