Being a Midwestern resident I echo the Cedar ridge and Driftless Glen sentiments. I was blown away by the DG offerings. Great work recognizing these hard working folks. Cheer!🥃
great video. ive been on that frey ranch wagon for a while thanks to my brother. great gift a while back that i had to gift him a bottle of eagle rare and i dont think thats an even trade. lol
I have always said the true whiskey flex isnt pappy or btac but is finding that gem of a bottle from that small distillery that either has only very small distribution area or only sells out of the distillery itself. Just search distillery near me or by your state and start driving! Its really fun and you can get some amazing stuff! I did that and literally found one 10 minutes away i never heard of in orlando of all places.
Leiper’s Fork! They’re such an amazing hidden gem in Nashville. Been going to their distillery for a few years now and their stuff just keeps getting better.
So glad to see Frey Ranch get a shout out here! As a Northern Nevada resident I was fortunate to take a drive out to the ranch last month and was not disappointed. They are currently offering complimentary tours and tastings and after having visited the distillery it really sparked an interest in bourbon for me. Love to see the sustainability and true farm-to-glass operation from them as well.
No offense to M&D, but I am so sick of hearing the marketing term "Small Batch". It means nothing, and either the juice is good or not. I really don't care how big the batch is as long as it tastes good. Oh, and every type of bottle of OYO I've had have been disgusting. Sorry, just my opinion. I haven't tried Middle West yet, but with my history of OYO, I probably won't.
I didn't like OYO either at first. Since the rebrand and there stuff getting older it's gotten alot better. Yeah and small batch isn't going anywhere...you can say the same for barrel proof. No technical term either. You can still water down barrel proof.
Love this list and the stories behind the distilleries. We’ve only tried Leiper’s Fork which is definitely great. Had 60% of the others on our “buy on sight” list and will be adding the others we weren’t as familiar with. Great video Jason!
Me being from Georgia it was great to see ASW in this video. I have 12 different bottles from ASW and they are great. If you can not find something you like from ASW with all of their different expressions you probably shouldn't be drinking!!! I currently am in love with Soloist, Georgia Heartwood, and Druid Hill.
Have you ever tried Spirit Hub? I have 3 bottles coming from them this week. Looking forward to them. Spirit Hub Select Single Barrel Third Time Bourbon by Three Rivers . Single Barrel Spirit Hub Select Spirit of Oak Bourbon Whiskey by Dark Door Spirits. Spirit Hub Select Single Barrel True Blue Corn Whisky by Balcones . Cheers!
Honey, pack up the mini-van. We have to visit several states to buy niche bourbon that can't be found in or near NY. Don't worry, we'll find stuff for the kids to do. It'll be fun, I promise. 😁
The Middlewest secret is out. I picked up their wheated when I was in the area. Really good. I should have looked for that rye. It sounds perfect for me. Now I need and excuse to go back to Obio.
Great video, if your ever in Arizona check out adventurous stills and del bac! They have a lot of great stuff they just have smaller distribution. We have a few videos up regarding them and will have a few more up in the near future.
Hey Jason, I'm a Columbus native and was there in June visiting. I picked up a bottle of Middle West and High Bank cast strength. Even the Russells 13 was sitin on the shelf at Krogers! Can't wait to go back. I actually thought The Mash and Drum was a local bar that I could got to. LOL . Could you do something on High Bank and their cast strength?
I just opened a bottle of the law's house Sam is oz house Saint Louis straight rye and I have to be honest I was disappointed the material actually was good but the new make characteristic was still dominant which of course is not pleasant and simply was not aged enough anymore than the new make a malted barley used for scotch is pleasant and it's always a disappointment when elements of that Is characteristic or still present in the material that supposedly has been properly age. It's not sure if the law's house 6 year rye has completed the aging process since I have not tried that expression....fingers crossed
Literally got my shipment notification from Frey Ranch this morning for both core bottles...excited! Toured Still Austin in November (it has a great parking lot neighbor in St. Elmo Brewery, a fave of mine)...love the Cask Strength, but so far, I am the contrarian that may prefer the Straight Bourbon to it...but I will keep testing. I normally am not a huge fan of Texas whiskey, but I love both bottles. I still need to try Iron Root Harbinger, but it can be hard to track down.
Great list. Big fan of Driftless Glen and Still Austin in particular, with Cedar Ridge following close behind. (haven't had much exposure to the rest yet)
Had Driftless Glenn while at Wisconsin Dells and I enjoyed it ,a little young but it's been years ill have to pick up another one, your choices lead me to believe you're a midwesterner, Besides Cedar Ridge (Iowa) Cody Road does some fine work and so does Whiskey Acres ( DeKalb Illinois) Few From Evanston not bad and Koval has some interesting juices but not always Bourbon but interesting nevertheless, They're from Chicago Cody Road has a pretty decent rye if you like the occasional rye, have a great weekend.
I have the Mattie Gladden from SoFL. Gorgeous and unique whiskey. Sweet tobacco comes through on the nose continues through to the palette. Amazing and worth a try. 🥃
Happy to see someone tackle this subject this way rather than the usual "been burned on this one, burned on that one" diatribe we get from the whiskey media. SoFL is the 🐐! Love Driftless Glen, Cedar Ridge and Frey Ranch. I also enjoy Finger Lakes. The others you reviewed I've been looking for for a few months. Home run on focusing on the good little guys and gals out there! 🤘🥃
Great video Jason! Loved the information and stories on each distillery. Have tried 5 of those on your list and have enjoyed all of them and keep going back to purchase and keep them on the shelf! Look forward to trying the rest on your list. Cheers!
Jason you dont have to make us all feel inferior with that b-roll. Also great list. Personally i feel like oppidan doesnt get all the credit they deserve, but im not sure how their distribution is.
Being from Columbus, I have yet to try anything from Middle West. Now I feel that I HAVE to check them out. Thanks for the informative content as always.
I was saying Frey Ranch like "Fry" too, til I called them and they told me it is pronounced like "Fray." I've only had a neck pour but looking forward to drinking more.
Beautifully shot and edited video. Great content and you have put me on the hint for a few of these. Another one I am fond of is Legends Bourbon from Spirits USA out of Cumming, Georgia. The Legends Barrel Proof Wheated Bourbon is amazing... Bringing home best Wheated Bourbon in Fred Minnick's Ascot Awards this year..
Was catching up on the summer vPubs on Whisky Central. Decided to hop over to your channel. Love the content. I need to get you a Dettling SiB. Crazy good stuff from here in Alabama (Daniel, Rex and Fred Minnick agree!). It's not often Alabama gets to be fancy
@@TheMashandDrum Thanks! We will be in Reno soon, but a bit far from there to visit. Maybe we can pick up a less common offering from them in the area.
I would like to hear you review for Wright & Brown Distillery out of Oakland, Calif. Is anyone familiar with it? I recently tried it on visit to the Bay. I was thoroughly impressed w/ their Cask Strength Rye as well as their standard. I haven't tried the straight bourbon yet.
The Driftless Glen has a decent bourbon, their Rye is not as good as I had hoped. North Carolina has some decent selections with the Southern Star and Conviction brands. The Southern Star is a high rye bourbon,it’s a little pricey, but very drinkable . For a bourbon aged less than 2 years, the Conviction is surprisingly good, their Double Oak is really good.
Just tried the rye and American Single Malt from Corsair Distillery in Nashville. Nice little distillery and the single malt is called Triple Smoke. It was surprisingly good.
Great review Jason. Any favorite bottle or company of all these listed? I agree with most all of these being awesome. I’m really digging Wilderness Trail, and I’ve also had some solid rye offerings from Catoctin Creek-Private Triple Cask(Virginia) and McClintock-Bootjack (Maryland). Cheers! 🥃🍻
Excellent video buddy! I absolutely love what Middlewest has been putting out lately, next time I'm in the area I'm going to have to hit you up and grab a pour!
I know you are giving us (the viewers) great content but, sometimes videos like this give me anxiety. Why? I really don't want anyone to find out about something or talk about bottles that are known 'secrets'. Shhhhhhhhh.... lol
Great video man! Lots of things here I need to try. I was just looking for some Spirits of French Lick the other day, but couldn't find it at a particular store. Will have to go down to Total Wine soon and grab a few things. Also love hearing some love for Starlight in there!! You gotta come over here and do a pick there sometime! That pumpernickle rye sounds interesting af!! Cheers, buddy.
Have a bottle of Middle West and agree with you. A fine product with good depth of flavor. I've had chances to pick some Cedar Ridge and haven't yet...it's from Iowa. Guess I'd better give it a shot. Great review of some great craft distilleries.
Fantastic video, Jason. Many of these are new to me so I'm going to have to seek them out. I see that Middlewest Dark Pumpernickel Rye is on sale at my local shop so just placed an order for it. Can't wait to try it. Cheers! 🥃
I've only had Frey Ranch. Actually it's a barrel proof store pick, 5yr 126.36%abv. The oak notes are impressive for the age\youth. Yes it's a little hot but once you get past that it's a solid BP bourbon. Would love to try this with another 3-5yrs age on it. I've seen some Driftless Glenn Rye store picks I'd like to try. But I've not seen any of these other whiskeys in NorCal. One of our local breweries, Bear Republic (Racer 5 IPA), apparently has a 12yr bourbon they've been working on! I live about 10 minutes from Redwood Empire but that cats already out of the bag! Cheers!

You should try Indian Creek over in New Carlisle. Was there on Sunday they are making some really great juice.
I purchased frey ranch last September. It was good, but not a $50+ whiskey.
Midwest four grain straight bourbon whiskey showed up in North Carolina, and it is delicious.

Any thoughts on Koval out of chicago? Great people, but the bourbon gets lots of hate on Reddit.
Just opened a bottle of the straight wheated bourbon from Middle West. Nice to have a good distillery so close to home.
Here in Northern Nevada at Lee's Liquor in Reno : Buy one Frey Ranch get one for 1 Penny!
Trying to get my hands on the Still Austin Cask Strength, and now look to get that Liepers Fork, sounds awesome!
Old 55 is another Indiana whiskey to check out.

Thanks for the Leipers Fork. It's impressive stuff.
Does Seelbach pay you? If not, stop plugging them. They suck! 😉
Lol. Do they not ship to you?
@@TheMashandDrum haha….how’d you guess??…😆
Found A driftless glen single barrel in jersey good stuff
Got me jonesing for that Middle West Dark pumpernickel rye. Great video!
Not sure if Westland is still considered craft but it’s one of my favorites
We love reviewing smaller distilleries for our channel. Just added three more to our list. Thank you. Cheers!
Spirits of French lick my favorite distillery at the moment. The Maddie Gladden!
Great information here. Surprised to not see Leopold Bros make the list.
Just havent had enough of their stuff yet. Only that 3 chamber rye,
Let’s go leiper’s fork. They just released their first batch of bottled in bond bourbon as well

Finally, something cool coming out of Wisconsin! Thanks for the heads up!
Great topic. Good stuff

French Lick hands down
I live close to french lick.
This would be a great video to revisit. Give an update and then some more new craft options.
It's happening! Working on it

Visited Spirits of French Lick last week. Really like the William Dalton and Lee W. Sinclair. Good price point too! $45 - $50.
Watched this one when it came out, but found it again when looking for Frey Ranch. Two years later, do you think it is worthwhile?

Have you tried Westland out of Seattle. You mentioned Woodenville and they are good. But the cask releases and limited releases are amazing of Westlands. Owned by the big guys now, but I always grab a bottle from them on release day.
Just cleared the shelves at Starlight (IN). Their stuff is pretty complex and refined.
A few others that I would suggest are Distillery 291 and Mythology Distillery
Cedar Ridge was a good call. They make an excellent wheat whiskey that is really bready and a lot more flavorful than Bernheim's, and their malted rye whiskey is an unusual product that actually tastes very good and is not just a novelty whiskey, which is frequently what I feel is a shortcoming with some of the oddball whiskies put out by Koval and other craft distillers.
