@@kennyb1588 I loved the representation but I also think what happened to Owen is very realistic, especially with also having two white boys with RAPE ALLEGATIONS just walking down the hallways like nobody’s business. @@youngmoney2217 THISSSS>>> Fr though, every school I went to or just visited always had a dance team rather than cheerleaders. They serve the same purpose, but your more likely to see a school in NY have a dance team than a cheerleading team. And if their were cheerleaders, they weren't "popular" on the social hierarchy moreso just known as the-- cheerleading team lmao. And I heavily agree, the idea of cheerleaders in teen shows is becoming more and more antiquated especially because these shows try to paint cheerleaders as a monolithic part of the high school experience or assume that anyone who is on the cheerleading team has a higher standing in the HS popularity hierarchy, when that isn't the case for all schools (and when it is the case, it's only for small town high schools/upper class suburban high schools/or schools where poc students aren't the majority)

i loved that the characters were good looking in a believable way. they didn't have victoria secret models walking around trying to convince us that 16 year olds look like that. the characters were pretty in the way that actual teens are, with still some awkward-ish features because they're going through puberty.

The thing I liked about the show is that they captured PERFECTLY how black kids are treated and punished compared to their white peers. The two black boys got a 60 day suspension, and I believe Owen got transferred to another "school" (basically a prison), for throwing a wallet full of money down a staircase, which they later PAYED BACK while the two white boys who ⚠️trigger warning⚠️ r*ped a girl got to go back to school in a shorter time span than their black classmates!!!

Schools don't recognize that their students make mistakes and how they discipline them will affect their future (esp nyc academic public schools). It's a 'wash my hands off of you, i'm done' approach to save their ass in the media and to avoid having to actually do their job WHICH IS TO TEACH KIDS HOW TO BE ADULTS!! The fact that Owen doesn't have much screen time in the show just highlights the reality that the system doesn't care nor do they follow up on the black kids that they fucked over (even if their record was as stellar as Owen's). It shows to me that his life is never really in his hands from the suspension and all state down to even having his own perspective without it being dependent on Jayson's plotline

I hated her in the beginning exactly for that. She never called out the real problematic behaviour from her friend group; did that free the nipple thing right after mocking Leila's outfit the day before and still laughed (after a quick call out) when George was bad mouthing her for not making him cun; she had to do a madness to get called to attention for going braless while they illustrated that black womens bodies get sexualised only for existing.
Also liked how they made the boys wear the free the nipple shirt and act supportive when joey showed them the nipple ring- only to then procede to do what they did and use the picture to make her look like she was willing.
And don't get me started on race. She only knelt after looking at Dom because of the comments about white feminism; she felt the need to constantly centralise herself as with the wallet situation; she doesn't understand privelage; and she's struggling with understanding how to be an ally, but instead of asking POC, she asks her racist friends that call themselves "apolitical". This is why I distrust white straight men that call themselves apolitical, more times this just means they hold reactionary thoughts they never really considered to be political.

I love how they had Dom and her family have full on scenes in Haitian Creole. I feel like bilingualism from immigrants and 1st gens gets watered down so the American audience doesn’t have to rely on subtitles. But that also dilutes the authenticity. I lived in Flatbush, BK (heavy Haitian population) and I know they don’t speak English in their households so if they had portrayed Dom’s family as English speakers with the occasional creole word, it would have been so inauthentic. We need more of this authenticity on tv

The police and the detective asked if I’m sure it wasn’t just a “ sex thing “ we did and the police made a joke that “ boys will be boys “. The man who assaulted me got away with it because they threw out my case.

(I used to daydream like that with my friends too) Just like Sid getting into Harvard was a big deal and Meera was in charge of the drama club, she even held an art exhibition for indian girls/women to showcase their work at her parents restaurants. 😅

I feel like the reason Ana found it so easy to turn on Joey was bc she had a crush on her and it went over my head the first time I watched it. And I feel like this bc of how she was acting when Joey told her she wanted to mess with Tim
