DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FATE AND OG WINX CLUB
    - “otherworld” was actually supposed to be a different universe entirely, solaria was its own planet
    - there were 3 different schools: Red Fountain (Specialists), Cloudtower (Witches)
    - musa was a music fairy and not a mind fairy
-there was a 6th fairy (Tecna) who controlled technology
-Aisha was a whole PRINCESS (Andros) and that planet had mermaids
-Bloom is a long lost princess of Domino (a dead planet)
    - the fashion was very y2k inspired
-Flora (who was replaced by Terra) was latina coded and the og fairy of nature
-Beatrix was THREE different characters and not fairy. They were witches: Icy (Ice), Stormy (Storm), and Darcy( Darkness)
    - The witches’ group name was the Trix
-Riven and Musa were in a relationship
    - Each Winx had their own specialist boo
    - There 6 main specialists paired with a Winx
    - Sky = Bloom, Brandon=Stella, Helia=Flora, Timmy=Tecna, Riven=Musa, and Nabu=Aisha
    - Stella was never a bitch, maybe a bit sassy not to the level of her fate counterpart
    - Every fairy at Alfea could transform and there different levels of transformation
    - Only girls could be fairies and witches
    - Only boys were specialists
    - Aisha actually wasnt in the 1st season, she was introduced in season 2 (but i’m glad that changed)
Those were the main differences from fate but I really liked the show overall but fate did whitewash musa (asian) and flora (latina) and completely got rid of tecna who was supposed to be coded as autistic representation

In teen groups this happens a lot. It easier to see you problems from an outsider perceptive and the solution seems simple however when your in it it your whole world or you fall in too deep. Plus people tend to ice out the individual from a group who do not align up with there own thought or codes for friendship, it immature but it happens. Most people are the cause for there own undoing.
My mum always says as parent the hardest thing is to watch me do things wrong or trust people i shouldn’t but she had to watch me fall to learn, and she couldn’t cuddle me because then I’ll make the mistake with not support system to rely on. My point is Aisha is an outsider to the problem and not emotionally involved so to her there’s a simple solution, however that person (bloom) didn’t listen and therefore had to find her own solution to the problem. All her friends were yes man her or looking at the problem from bloom perceptive. So from the group perceptive she the villain. In addition, some people may just apologise to avoid further problem which what I think is what they did here. Hopefully season 2 her character develop a spine.

It's so sad bc back in the day it was cool that how ethnically diverse this show was for the 2000s, and they took that out. And it's sad that people who never saw the cartoon don't understand why we r mad. Y do minorities need to beg for representation especially when that was in the source material. And people say well the made "flora" (I know her name is the show is terra but she is flora, or at least her replacement) plus-sized y do u hate plus-sized people. No I love that, that is actually something I'm so happy they changed, but r u telling me there was no hispanic or latinx actors that r plus-sized? And I know everyone has talked about this but I must be said, why are the costumes also bad. Like in the original show they literally had designer brands help design the outfits and now these people look like they're about to go on real housewives. But these actors don't deserve hate for doing their job, tell the executives what's wrong with it.

    • @victoriaadaini
      @victoriaadaini 3 года назад +81

Completely agree with this! It’s honestly so upsetting. Another thing that really upsets me is the decision to make the show “darker” and explicit. This Netflix adaptation is basically saying that there is something inherently weak about femininity. Which is the opposite of what the show represented. Also I’m really sad about the removal of all the love interests. Especially Helia and Timmy because I like that Helia was in touch with his femininity and Timmy was a good example of the “nerdy” guy trope done well. Also in the original how the male love interests treated the faeries was so sweet and it made me so happy. They literally not only took away the ethnically diversity of the characters but also the diversity of the personality types. They were in no way stereotypical in the original which was so refreshing. I just don’t think they needed to use the winx name if the were not going to keep the things that made it winx. I’m honestly so tired of Netflix doing this.

Same for when they never explore Aisha's issues with her powers (i.e. being a natural fairy, being less rigid with its form). They just present it and let it die. Just goes to show how much consideration they gave her character. And even say the same goes for Musa, whose story mostly revolves around Sam, but she at least has her 'always on powers' issue.

Here's my entry for comment section essay on the failures of this as a winx club adaptation.
The biggest issue for me with this show is that every change they made seems to be rooted in misogyny or racism. With racism everyone already knows that Musa was whitewashed and the latina character flora was replaced by a white girl named Terra that's big. The other big thing with racism is how they changed Aisha. I loved her casting I love her actress and I was actually hesitantly excited for her arc in this show however all of her personality and story was stripped in favor of making her blooms babysitter. In the original she was an athletic no nonsense tomboy with a soft side hidden under her somewhat harsh exterior. Shes the Princess of one of the largest kingdoms of the galaxy, Andros, but she struggles with the role as she has so many expectations placed on her by her parents. I expect that the majority of her story is going to be given to Stella. In the series she was introduced as having run away from home and befriended a group of Pixies who she has been singlehandedly protecting from the Tyrant ruler of the underground for months. After meeting the other winx club she slowly begins to trust people again and joins their group as one of the most powerful fairies in the series. She also has arcs where she struggles with an arranged marriage and her conflict between what she wants to do and her duty to her kingdom and I love her very much. I didn't see any of the Aisha i grew up with in Fate which sucks because I love her actress Precious.
In terms of the misogyny oh boy. In the original show the girls weren't always best friends all the time but they were extremely close. Even when arguing or even insulting each other there was always one other winx girl trying to stop them and no matter what happened they felt like a really close group of friends. They never fought about boys they only insulted each other's clothes or choices playfully but the show threw all of that out in favor of making the girls rude to each other at first for realism points. Stella was especially bastardized from her original counterpart who certainly didn't shy away from snarky remarks but when push came to shove stella was always the one most protective and caring of her friends. Fate to me seems to have little to no respect for it's source material. Not only does it not include many aspects of the original show like the outfits, music, or fun atmosphere but it actively mocks those things at every opportunity. It claims to be for fans of the original show but it also seems to mock us for wanting to see things like glittery fairy forms which was a big part of the draw to the original show for a lot of people.
I was a kid who had parents that didn't let them watch anything like spongebob and Hannah montana were BANNED from my house but winx club was allowed because my mom thought that it had positive women role models and that while there were always elements of misogyny and racism the overall message of the show was incredibly positive such that it was one of three cartoons I was allowed to watch. I hate the phrase "ruined my childhood" but personally I feel like Fate took a beloved aspect of my childhood and ruined everything that made me like it. To the people who like Fate I'm honestly not mad at you I'm just disappointed they insisted on making this a winx adaptation. I've said quite frequently that the series W.I.T.C.H. which was airing at the same time as winx and had mostly the same fan base would have made a much better basis for this adaptation. Anyway it's a bad adaptation and I'm sorry to those who like it but I can't stand it. If you can enjoy kids shows I recommend the original cartoon (4kids dub tho. This is important) and if that's too girly then W.I.T.C.H. is also good.

ok girl, lemme be that essay. The original show was so loved due to its diversity, fashion and characters designs and personalities. The two characters who were practically erased were, Flora and Tecna, and they completely ignored how much Musa's asian heritage affected her character. Many people were upset because Flora was something that hadn't been represented in media prior to the release of this show, she was a latina who was calm, soft and outwardly caring, refreshing when media has only portrayed latinas as sassy and fiery girls. While, they replaced Flora with Terra who was supposed to be plus-size representation which is fantastic, they could've done that to any of the characters while keeping their ethnicities. Removing Tecna is actually alot more upsetting than many people say, because she was supposed to represent women in S.T.E.M. in a positive light, which is an even more under-represented character archetype. This is merely scratching the surface of the issues i personally have with this show, like how the dark-skin black girl and the plus-size girl are the only ones without love interests, and how they gave aisha no personality, or how the stella in this show is a disgrace to the cartoon, or the fashion. the fashion. do not get me started on the god-awful fashion. There is so much to delve into like lack of sexual orientation representation, or the erasure of Musa's asian heritage but Netflix doesnt want to talk about that. :( the show on its own wouldve been fine, but to completely shit on what winx is supposed to be is really upsetting.

Here's my attempt at the paragraph (from someone who watched the Winx as a child! )
    Problems:
there's only one (dull) "transformation" (in the original, the fairies would unlock new "forms" which would lead to these beautiful transformation scenes),
they whitewashed two of the characters (Musa is Eastern Asian coded and Flora is Latina coded) took out Techna (the technology fairy). They turned Aisha into the token POC.
the fashion isn't good at all (the original fashion choices in the show were designed by fashion designers if I'm not mistaken, inspired by Y2K)
They turned the damn lights off (lacked a vibrant color pallette) Why can't we have fun magic shows instead of another Riverdale or Sabrina the teenage witch. sigh. The showrunners only made it darker because they wanted to appeal to young adults this time around. It's kinda frustrating because why can't we have FUN. Not everything needs to be this brooding, dark, story for adults to like it.
NOW, I think the show on its own is fine on its own. It can be a good dark magic fairy/witches show. If it wasn't the nostalgia baiting and the whitewashing, this probably is an enjoyable show! This will probably have a good following BUT It's not faithful to the original at all.

I was so embarrassed that they were getting mad at Aisha for “snitching” on Bloom huh?
The school is under attack and u are being selfish and because of her selfish actions the headteacher died that one guy got arrested and the school completely changed.
I also hated the fact that they took the premise of a pg and made it edgy as if I cared for that
AND WHY THE HELL DID THEY HAVE TO WHITEWASH THEM like what did that bring to the story
Also also they casted all these characters like riven but he didn’t end up with musa. I hated riven anyway so it’s not that bad
Also watch sky’s dad disapprove of bloom which will lead to their relationship drama in s2 watch this happen
Why did they have to replace flora ?!? And if you’re going to replace her with her cousin why make her whoty
And I hated the performative feminism eg when bloom says lord of the flies and her dad corrects her with ladies or when idk his name comes to apologise to Terra and she has this mini monologue to the men in the room about patriotism. I wanna be shown this feminism not have a 5 minute speech on this it just feels forced
Also also why give musa another storyline (her mum dying) when my girl Aisha is still out here being blooms black best friend
    However I liked musas storyline
    I also liked Stellas development
The plot was good but it’s the fact thst they dragged winx into it annoyed me cuz u have two veryyy different stories but merged the characters

I just finished the entire series and it was definitely interesting. Bloom got on my nerves she was so stuck up and did not understand that everything that happened was her fault. I disliked Aisha character they always make stereotypes of dark skin women and girls. This girl can literally control water she is not Bloom's side kick. The original winx cartoon was way better than this show because the characters was flushed out, the plot was good, it was way more diverse in characters. Also all of the characters had their own personalities, stories lines, character development, etc. It was also very evident in the series that all the girls were powerful and none of them side kicks to bloom.

Also, let's be real... they went the white-actor route with Terra (who was originally Flora) because having to find three Latino actors to play Flora, her father, and her brother would have been too much work for them. Sigh!

  • @nas7416
    @nas7416 3 года назад +52

I don't know if someone did the essay already but there are a few big issues that a lot of people have with the show when coming from the perspective of it being an adaptation of the Winx Club.
The biggest is the whitewashing of Flora (whose role was given to Terra in Fate) and Musa. When it comes to Flora/Terra, the situation is really weird and funny because the people behind the show were well aware that people were going to be mad that they made Flora white (she's a brown-skinned Latina in the cartoon and her design was based on Jennifer Lopez), so they changed her name to Terra and presented her as a new character in a desperate attempt to cover up the whitewashing. We know for a fact that Terra was originally written to be Flora because the actress for Terra had it on her portfolio that she auditioned for Flora in this show.
When it comes to Musa, her design in the original cartoon was based on Lucy Liu and a lot of her outfits and clothing had Asian designs, which is just evidence that Musa is supposed to be Asian. The actress for Musa is apparently a quarter Singaporean so a lot of people assume that means she's racially a quarter Asian but she's definitely a white-passing/white woman when the role should be for a visibly Asian actor.
The second biggest problem people have with the show is the fashion and the aesthetic. The cartoon is famous for having a clear focus on fashion with each member of the Winx Club having their own distinct styles and multiple outfits throughout the series. The show even hired actual fashion designers to help design the outfits of characters, proving how much of a staple fashion is to the show. I think it's obvious then why so many people have issues with the look and costuming of Fate.
There are other problems people have like certain characters being left out of the adaptation and key elements from the show (transformations in particular) being minimal in the adaptation but I think I covered where a lot of the original fans are coming from pretty well.

Also Aisha is literally the princess of Andros in the original cartoon, so hopefully they explore that or give her some substantial plot line in s2. Ok so I am going to be the one to write a long ass paragraph essay on this topic. Disclaimer: I have not and will not watch the series due to my personal attachment to the original series. I am going to do this character by character +other issues.
Tara: while it is amazing that a plus sized character was cast to play one of the most beloved characters from the original series, whose name was Flora, there still lie issues with this. Flora, who the character of Tara was based on, and originally named after, was a latina. As we can see in the series, this has been removed. This is a huge issue, as the character of Flora was already whitewashed in the later animation adaptations. The series couldn't allow a pluz sized latina to play the role, it was either plus sized or latina.
Musa: Again, whitewashing occurs in the case of Musa, who was originally Asian and based on Lucy Liu. In the original series, there were multiple references to East-Asian culture in the character of Musa and it was overall an important factor of her character. This has all been removed and a racially ambigious, if not white, actor ws cast to play thw role. This is yet another erasure of diversity.
Aisha: It is amazing that a dark skinned black woman was cast for this role, and I honestly think that Precious was an amazing choice. However, as the diversity of the original show has been removed, this casting seems to be a distraction of the other factors of white washing.
Bloom: In the case of Bloom, I'm not sure of any major issues.
Stella: In the original series, Stella is the first one to befriend Bloom and they seem to be the closest throughout the series. This friendship was not complicated by a love triangle, as Stella fell in love with Sky's servant. This was a major part of her character, as she learned to look outside of her own royal class and accept everyone as they are. Stella's styling is also a major issue, but I will return to this later on.
Techna: Techna was one of the original winx in the original series. She was a technology fairy, which might be a reason for her removal, as it was outdated. However, the removal of Techna also took away amazing possibilities to develoo this character and add diversity. You see, Techna displays many traits of autism and though asexuality could not have been a thing in the original series, it would make sense in the case of Techna. This would also offer an amazing development and retelling of this character in the time and space, in which these aspects of the character could be done justice to.
Styling: The original Winx had amazing styling, in fact, actual designers were called in to create to look for each girl. The girls had style and were colorful, which is definitely not the case here. Stella, for example, was a very fashionable girl in the original series, but now she is dressed like a 30 year old woman. A big reason to this is that the stylist that was hired, had never worked with teenager costuming. The show could've utilized the rising trend of 2000s fashion or for example in the case of wanting to make the series darker, dark academia or something similar.
Lack of LGBTQ+ representation: In thee original series, there were many plots that could be developed into a more queer direction, for example, in the case of Flora or Tara. This however, was not done.
Profiting on nostalgia and not actually caring about the original material: The original Winx Club has loads and loads of room to develop, which, if executed correctly, could've produced and amazing show to watch. However, the creators fail to recognize their main nostalgic audience, who are in late teens and in their twenties. The show wss not made with care for the people it tried to profit of off, and doesn't offer development to our beloved characters.
I am sorry if this is confusingly structured, but my main disappointment was the fail to utilize the amazing world of Winx and bring it to life.

If anything, Techna would fit perfectly in today's age. Even if Techna wouldn't be the only one with technology, she could be a computer programmer and/or have powers which affect technology in a special way.
