In 2001, I was 14. I remember seeing the Brittney Spears/Bob Dole (THE 1996 Vice Presidential Candidate) Pepsi commercial when it came out. If you haven’t seen it, don’t bother, it’s AWFUL. Anyway, I remember being utterly repulsed and asking what other people, especially women and girls thought of it at that time. I heard a pretty resounding “Meh”. For years, I thought my discomfort with that commercial was my fault. I was being sensitive and prudish. They’re adults, they know what they’re doing. It took a long time for me to change that thinking. I still struggle with it now. I fight for females of all ages to never look around and see what I saw. They don't destroy the florest to sell the wood, they destroy so they can grow soy and raise cows for the meat industry. And yes the forest can restore itself, but there is a point of no return of destruction and will become a savanna. At that point the industry can plant 1 million trees and won't make a difference.

People talking about kids mental health is getting really bad when kept out of school. I certainly understand this but imagine how much worse their mental health would be if they spread COVID and lose their teacher or parent(s). In person instruction is not worth making kids into orphans.

Yes thank you! Iti s incredibly hard on kids (and adults) mental health, I have a 3 yr old and it is has been a sad year where she has barely seen another child. But I'll be damned if me or my child is going to be part of the problem. I wish the US were a place where adult could act like adults and follow precautions properly and maybe we could have actually gotten these kids safely back to school at some point in the last year instead of this sh*show we are still in.

@@julybeicy as i said you are not going to hug or kiss any strangers you meet on the road so if someone doesn't wear the mask correctly (although mask are completely useless in the first place) it doesn't affect you. Also some people are exempt from wearing it and those people are not obligated to give an explanation of why they are not wearing a mask just because someone else paranoia, live and let them live and you will last 100 years.
I dislike so much when other minorities come for black people and BLM. Like I’m latina and I know the struggles of the latin community in the US but that doesn’t invalidate the struggles of other minorities. I feel like we have this stupid idea that other minorities having movements will diminish the impact of ours when that’s not true. If we all unite and fought the opressor instead of our minority brothers we would accomplish so much more.. but as they say.. divide and conquer 😕

I'm from Texas, and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you keeping us in your thoughts. my family has been lucky enough to have power, but a lot of my friends and family have been without it for multiple days and we know a lot of people who have had severe damage to their homes bc of pipes bursting. it's been a really hard week to be a texan and see so many of my neighbors across the state suffering and in pain while not being able to do much about it, but seeing people I follow send support and love our way has been really encouraging! so thank you! your prayers and well wishes don not fall on deaf ears

I'm basically a dinosaur at 31 and I think Gen Z is bringing goals for the future of humanity. About the Asian American anti-blackness bit: there is an Asian American dance crew named the Kinjaz who are hip hop based dance crew. And during the BLM protests they had a round table discussion about how to be allies and they had only one black guy at the table and were kind of trying to force out of him what they can do to be an ally but he didn’t budge as he should. The next discussion they had about this they replaced the black guy with an Asian American woman who would essentially tell them what they wanted to hear. I just thought this was interesting that a community that uses black culture, who also discussed about having ant-black sentiment in the Asian community, need someone from their own community to show how to be anti-black. It doesn’t make sense to me and has made me side eye them. Anyway that was a long tangent.

I..... want to make a case about the Asian attacks part of this video because I don't want such a complicated issue to be misconstrued by people who may not be as aware of where we are coming from. I'm looking at the comments, and not one person I see is mentioning it, so I feel like I need to explain.
As an Asian myself, seeing the videos of my elderly being attacked is incredibly shocking, and amplified at a level that is unique to our culture. In Asian cultures, we revere our elders. It was the first time I truly empathized with how the black community must've felt seeing George Floyd's murder.
Although I personally have not felt these feelings of "jealousy" myself, I think younger members of our community who are confused why these attacks are not receiving the same response BLM had are experiencing for the first time what the Asian community has been experiencing on the down low for a long time. It is not a perceivement of "hierarchy" but a sense of abandonment when last year's movement provided a sense of unity for those who believe in the cause. I personally struggle with bringing this up because it is black history month, I am surrounded by performative activist email threads and meetings (I go to a predominately white christian school), and I hesitate out of (for lack of better word), consideration (yes, very asian of me)... despite the fact that I am very, very, hurt and angry.
And that is part of the issue, our culture is often seen as passive and our elders/victims tend to not speak out for themselves, so rarely is the discrimination we face realized in its magnitude. Not to mention the model minority myth does not actually work in our favor (which is another long discussion). Only recently have we been able to speak up more (and on behalf of our elders), and the younger generation who have grown up in a culture where speaking up is the norm are probably just confused as to why things have been so quiet and unnoticed for so long.
Of course, there will always be bigoted, racist pigs. I definitely am not here to make a case for them. But there is a danger in being lumped together, especially when the Asian community as a whole are not as well understood in the general public here in the US.

I agree with this, but being anti black out of “lack of understanding” is still being anti black and it sucks. Black people are tired. Our movements got traction because they are centuries in the making and I get that people didn’t really understand that and thought it was some new trend. Not to mention that all the noise we received for George Floyd has done very little for black people in the long run. Breonna Taylor’s case was a tragic disappointment and police brutality is still killing us minorities. We need to stand together for once and save our communities
The issue is that instead of boosting your own issues you bring up issues with other minorities. There are a lot of black people who would support and help spread awareness but the Asian community has been very anti black and then to compare the two is an extra insult. The two do not compare because BLM was a thing for over 10 years and it’s just now “getting attention” but nothing has actually changed. So it’s extra insulting that it’s being compared. We got no results so saying it is you saying you want attention but not help.
Black people and BLM owes the Asian community nothing so we shouldn’t be mentioned when your issues are brought up.
Now I find this issue abhorrent and I would love it if the communities that are trying to organize and create solutions got more help and their message broadcasted which should be the conversation instead of your hurt feelings. It should be how we can combat this.
@@xxyyywumpx I definitely see your point, and you're right in that the Black community doesn't owe the Asian community (or anybody for that matter) anything. I hope I wasn't coming off in a way that it made it sound like they SHOULD.
I was just trying to provide context of an emotional process that may be coming from a more younger and less emotionally/intelligently aware part of our group that is dealing with these attacks. It was a bit hurtful to hear Amanda harshly blame jealousy as the root cause, when I personally see it as misguided hurt (which I do believe shouldn't be given a pass, education is necessary). I don't think for a lot of these people, anti-black is their intent, but I can see how it can come across in such way. Only recently has our community been more open about these things, and the news of the scope of these things are new to some of us (especially when it comes to 3rd, 4th generation Asian American youths).
And I'm not sure what everyone else is seeing, but I personally don't see my community specifically attacking the Black community about spreading awareness about these attacks... I see more a frustration towards the general public because of the difference in response, when the nature of the crimes are what they are (which sheds light to issues of the Asian community and US society as a whole, which is a completely separate conversation). I do want to emphasize I see a great presence of support in the Black community for us during this time and I feel really encouraged, even if, at the very least emotionally for the time being. Nonetheless, I personally am not looking at the Black community specifically for anything when it comes to this, because I understand these incidents can hit close to home, and people react differently and we are super drained.
I do understand the frustrations that BLM has done little for the Black community in the long run. It's tiring for all of us who believe in the cause, but I imagine especially for the Black community. But we are all in a process of trying to figure things out to do better, and I believe the Asian community is a part of that. Contrary to how the general public seems to see it, there's is a strong support for the BLM movement in the Asian community, especially from the youth. I do believe PART of why the BLM movement is as big as it is now is because we hope for a trickling effect; for lack of better word, "BLM walked so other racial equality causes could run". It doesn't help to be knocked down and told that issues like this are "abhorrent" when those types of things are partially contributing to why we can't cooperate as a group.
I genuinely believe it's not necessarily attacking the Black community, but frustration towards the media and the white libs, and the people who were loud when BLM was "trendy" out of desperation and hurt... I mean, yes, did all the attention help BLM? Not really, but what else are we to do? We're clamoring for answers and solutions, but in the meantime, the tens of thousands of the rest of us still see a bunch of people constantly saying they didn't know about it (and that is a critique towards the media and comparing their response to the multiple Black murder videos that went viral last year).
I honestly think all of this: Amanda's comment, my comment, your response are all a result of unsolved problems and unhealed wounds and people lashing out and being defensive. We're just trying to find a way to be respectful, but emotions are high and we're all dealing with very personal issues. I just want to end this by saying, if possible, please understand that a lot of us in the Asian community are hurt and angry right now, and we're just desperately trying to figure out how we can protect our elders and vulnerable. Most of us don't have any ill intent towards the Black community and the BLM movement, and I for one am making sure I have my internal checks and balances so I don't hurt others in the process. (sorry for the long response, I really don't want to leave things on a sour note)
When covid was first getting announced and there were hate crimes against Asians, all communities rallied around Asians to show support. Then a black woman set up a helpline for Asians something black people don't have. Obviously a helpline isn't going to solve everything but there was a response to what happened. So I have no idea why they're now comparing.
It took a black man to be the 'perfect victim' (no resisting arrest, no chat back, long video with no one needing to see context first, calling for his mother, begging for his life before actually dying) and a complete global lockdown for BLM to blow up the way it did, don't forget that. It's going to take a very extreme situation for Asians to get the same attention too and I don't why they think it will be any different for them and that's a problem.
It's awful that this is happening because of propaganda.

im a highschool student and my school is FORCING kids to go to school unless they have an underlying health condition.. and when i went to my counselor yesterday expressing my concerns abt how students should have a say in whether or not they attend in person school or not, he just told me he disagrees, that its harder for teachers to teach to kids both online and in person, and that i have to get a note from a doctor w/ the right qualifications to stay home... im so angry abt this all. people are literally dying. kids at my school are running around w/ COVID and not telling the school. im so done.

Honestly it just breaks my heart, how traumatic a lot of these behaviors are to people, and to groups of people. Racist Rhetoric can be subtle, and the people its aims towards can recognize it, but are blown off when they try to speak up about it. Comparing one struggle to another in such a way is a very negative, and even abusive, behaviour, and it *is* emotionally damaging. Stop pitting two struggles against each other - it serves no purpose but to help those who benefit from privilege. It is honest to god just mind boggling to me, how this has been going on for freaking generations. Someone is always trying to say that black people have "enough" attention. I don't see this rhetoric done anywhere near this scale as it is done for blm and its predecessor movements.
What is so hard about including more than one movement, more than one cause? Attention is not finite. We can give our time to multiple causes. There are enough of us to do that. God.
