My favourite part of Grand Army was seeing black teens just being black teens. Involved, kind, hard working in healthy relationships(for the most part) be it familial, platonic or romantic relationships.

As someone who was a freshman a couple months before the show was on : I personally felt bad but mostly angry at her because of the validation she felt she needed, but I also don't really try to intentionally judge her because I've been told many times that I'm crazy independent and like a wall that can't be broken by people and kind of a social outcast thats still social so I can see why I don't need their validation, but others can't. I also feel bad for her because before Covid-19, when I was a freshman I saw it happen with many girls needing validation from guys and it's really disheartening that this is a reality.

as a latina/hispanic it was so refreshing to see minorities in their actual light because usually it's so SO stereotypical ie Leila being an asian woman who is NOT extremely smart or "abg" and although it's unfortunate how fast Dom is required to grow up to just live it's very realistic. A lot of minorities specifically black women are always thrown into adulthood way quicker than they should be. As well as Sid being thrown into coming out. Joey still gives me white, performative feminism, and each time she was called out either online or in-person she would scroll past it or ignore it. Each time one of her bummy friends would be plainly sexists, misogynistic, and bigoted and she'd act like it didn't happen, wouldn't even correct them. She plainly annoyed me. I felt really bad for her though when she was assaulted. I was pissed when Tim said "that's just joey" after she reported the incident like he was an eyewitness and didn't support her when he was questioned...like dude you watched her cry as she was assaulted. Anna PISSED ME OFF talking bout some "she'll regret this", like bro, that's your Best friend! Everyone failed her. But unpopular opinion, I still think I can feel bad for her and still not like her. I want the best for her though, but I still just don't like her. I think that's why her character is great, it creates a conflicting feeling.

Unfortunately free the nipple doesn't apply to black girls and woman and other poc bc of racial based fetishism. They won't get celebrated for their bravery like Joey, they will only get slutshamed due to society sexualising their bodies and that's why we should stop spreading awareness for feminism from white woman's pov!

@Taylor R'stephens I don't believe that's entirely true. Joey was so loud and was radiating such loose energy in the cab, that in some parts I almost forgot if she is actually enjoying or is just too hammered. Either way, the two boys should be locked away because it was just a vile and disgusting behaviour, but joey was throwing herself at them, like riding them, hooking up with them and stuff which I feel like led to that. Also, I could see how her character changed as she couldn't let the boys touch her but still hung out with them, she was traumatized for shit. Tim, I don't think it was his fault, he was literally telling her to stop and he didn't want to see that shit.

That was an opportunity meant for Owen that Jay took but didn't even fulfill. That performance could have landed Jay a college scholarship and even though it was to support Owen and highlight the differences in punishment towards black students he messed up a huge opportunity for himself. All everyone cares about and was talking about in tiktok was how much “potential” joeys guy friends had even though they were bad characters from the beginning and the writers of the show made it very clear. When it came to Joey, Jay, and Dom's breakdown analysis you literally took everything that I felt and turned it into a functioning sentence scratch that a Paragraph. The scene that really hit me was Joey having that "talk" with her friends after everything went down. They could CLEARLY see that the only thing that she wanted from them was an acknowledgment, just inkling that they were aware of what they did. But of course, they knew that and by admitting it would force them to confess to themselves that they are rapist point blank because even though it's widely talked about in today's culture its's still taboo in the sense that an association with the word alone true or not alienates you from society. And when Anna tried to act like she was just hearing everything for the first time when Tim finally confessed not because it was the right thing to do but because he wanted to silence his guilt... BOY BYE. Don't even get me started on Dom and Jay

The thing about Dom getting mad at John (and later at her friends) for seemingly minor and obviously well meaning things was honestly a great illustration of the breaking point that she's at and the anger that she's been keeping under the surface for so long.
She hasn't been able to catch a break for even a moment for so so long it's no wonder she's a lil snappy.
Personally those moments made me love Dom even more because they were so real and so human.

There was a brief scene where Joey and her friend are talking in a gender neutral bathroom then a transgender (ftm I assume) student walks in and they laugh. Joey permits her friends to these things while being an "activist." She doesn't even follow her own rules but I began to like her more near the ending. I hope to see her develop more, especially when it comes to her and Dom's friendship.

I didn't see this series, but I can relate to the topics so much. Here in Mexico, where I live, we have a serious problem with femicides, misogyny and machismo. At the beginning of the year, before Covid (in my country), I was the main feminist activist on my highschool, and I still believe the same things I fought for. I am just tired and angry of seeing the same situations repeat themselves over and over again and being blamed for things that aren't my fault. I want to do more, and I am surely going to do more

Joey is the Embodiment of the girl who we all wanted to be in high school. Beautiful, confident, sure of herself, developed physically as a woman, has hella friends. As a young girl still trying to figure things out, I can see why Leila became somewhat fixated on her... but that jealousy is supposed to waine as you grow and begin to see that everyone is beautiful in their own way. Not to mention that even the people that seem to have at most to go there are sometimes struggling as well. If you have Main character syndrome, it will definitely shake you inside when other people can so easily take the attention from you.

I think that was intentional though, is probable that Sid's parents came in the US around 20 or 30 years ago, with time one could lose the affinity that they have previously with one language. And unlike Dom's family i think Sid's parents never wanted to teach to their children Hindu because they want to appear as good American citizens, to have their kids more Americanized then them.
