Beyoncé is the entertainer of my life, and I thank (the majority of) you so much for understanding that it is possible to both celebrate her incomparable artistry and call attention to areas of ethical disappointment. 🐝💖 The polarity of this comment section is very interesting! On one hand we have those saying Beyoncé IS relatable off the strength of her human qualities such as being a multilayered woman with complex emotions (which I thought went without being said but onward we move)... and then we have others saying because of her wealth and status, it's beyond presumptuous for us to even think her lyrics/image (though marketed toward the working class) would ever be within reach for us normies anyway. 😕 If you've watched the whole video, what are your nuanced thoughts? Also, thank you to those of you who kindly corrected me about what vogues are! I will not ever forget it again lmao.
After watching the video again, I think you made a great point with the implication that there seems to be an association between wealth and worthiness. The attitude some have towards the poor is one in which they are seen as failures and undeserving of grace. As if they are lacking God's favor. This is the basis of the prosperity gospel so many preachers are pushing today. We are bombarded with the idea of lack. Beyonce doesn't say it but she is part of the machine that implies that because we may not have her wealth, and connections we are less than.
Really fantastic prompt for further discussion! IMO as more of an observational viewer of this topic (as opposed to being a longtime fan, not that I dislike her music or deny her talent) it’s quite interesting to ponder the exchange of power within parasocial relationships with wealthy elites. It’s not lost on me that this is due to a plethora of underlying elements regarding social identity, celebrity culture, and longstanding systems of oppression/exploitation of specific groups. I’m fascinated to witness (in the comment section) such intense personal defenses of a superstar, as though she’s related to these fans on a familial level. I know this is not a necessary dynamic for someone to identify as a super big fan of Beyoncé (in other words, an unhealthy parasocial dynamic is not an inherent part of seriously enjoying an entertainer’s work and even their public persona). It seems that you, Tee, exemplify this yourself. The very comment I’m responding to is a great description of your personal understanding of your “reasonable fan status”, if you will. The “reasonable” is referring to the impact on YOU, not in the view of others. I think that’s the key to this topic: to what degree does a celebrity’s influence within individual fans’ lives remain healthy and reasonable? And beyond this, what agents are at play in the over-influence, aka manipulation, of billionaire elites among average consumers? And finally, what are ways for furthering effective discussion on separating our individual identities from our entertainment media enough to determine if we’re being taken advantage of in some ways? I think the god-complex granted to certain public personalities is undeniably dangerous. Every single individual must be accountable to fellow humanity. No one is above critique. This opinion should be obvious, not controversial.
@@danispriggs7818 yes. And I can’t help but see exploitation in a superstar singing about these themes as though they 1) get it, 2) personally care, or 3) aren’t taking advantage of that very system to stay wealthy while their loyal fans remain content to pay them.
God is a vast vast vast vast being, when people say you shouldn't say certain things I get it bc negativity towards God isn't the best way to connect to them but most of these people police other people from there own ego. Not an actual connection
@@danispriggs7818 Most parents can’t even say their own parents would quit a 6 figure job & take a gamble on their child . Beyonce comes from a family who clearly took risk something many people don’t do anymore . Then they sit up online & complain about how they can’t relate to someone . Beyoncé lyrics does speak to regular people & class even if herself can’t relate to it . It’s idiotic to say you can’t relate to a singer lyrics or music because they are rich . Somehow people could relate to single ladies even if they weren’t single . Relate to crazy in love even if they weren’t crazy in love , but Beyonce singing about quitting a 9/5 is unrelatable . You can’t relate to Beyoncé until you can invest in yourself. That’s where y’all disconnected . Beyoncé also came from a middle / upperclass. She has built the generational wealth by investments in her say it with me SELF.
All I know is that Beyoncé owes me money cuz I dislocated a knee dancing to Love On Top in 2018 and I still can’t afford to pay off that ambulance bill 😭
Beyonce is pretty and rich like I've never found her relatable beyond the fact that we're both Black women. I didn't realize that people found her relatable like that.
They don’t. Most people do not. They literally drag her for not getting on social media to clap back at folks or talk to her fans. I’ve been a fan since I was a child and I’ll never understand why people want to relate to celebs. NONE of them are relatable. They’ll put on a front though, I don’t feel like Beyoncé does that personally. She releases her projects and go.
You know I think some Black women's need to see Beyonce as relatable says more about the intense suffering we are going through. Some of us need to live vicariously through her to feel free and whole and beautiful for those 3 minutes or so of that song. We just have to realize that same freedom after the song is over.
When the pics of celebrities at Beyonce's birthday party came out and people were shocked the Kardashians were there, I went on a little tangent that Beyonce had more in common with them than us. And if Beyonce is willing to overlook her husband saying clueless rich people shit then it's no surprise she willing to overlook the Kardashians bs. People did not respond positively lol.
@@ThaSweetHart What you know is that regardless of how she feels about what he has said, its not such a big enough ethical dilemma that its a deal breaker in their relationship. "We don't know what she feels.." not precisely but her actions and not actions are much more impactful than any words that she can say.
She's a businesswoman. She isnt a social worker in the hood who personally drives ppl without transportation to the pole to make a real difference in the community on her dime. Of course she is friends with the kardashians. Its what ppl call networking. Networking always involve making relationships with bad ppl who ultimately make you money. "Just business" is a quote for that reason. We DONT PRAISE POC WOMEN WHO ARE RAISING THEIR KIDS, GOING TO SCHOOL, STARTING THEIR BUSINESS, RUN FOR OFFICE enough. We just mock them bc they dont have gucci on. 🤧 we mock them bc their baby dady left them and thats somehow her fault. We mock them bc they raise their kids instead of abandoning them too. We tell them they are supposed to stay and clean up everyones mess. We dont tell them to that its ok to be childfree...single...ambitious...dismissive of leachy men. We just say give give give, work work work, fight for street mens lives, raise future minimum wage workers and stay quiet. Get fixed. Dont date. Become an insured housewife. Graduate school. Open a business. Stay home and raise kids. DO WHAT YOU TRULY WANT and make sure you have money to fall on otherwise its slavery. You cook n clean n nothing is in your name your a slave. You have a career n pay half the bills despite making less n yet have to cook clean n raise kids once ur home...slave. Make sure whatever path YOU choose YOU come first. Bc to a guy...its him first his boys his mom then you. On gawd its tru. Thats how poverty works. By not paying the worker what shes worth.
Totally agree. Why does EVERYBODY need to be 'relatable' and be palatable for society to vicariously live through them? Brand Beyonce was strategically placed to mimick as sense of perfection (to a certain point). She has never sought to place herself as a 'girl next-door' type. We don't need a 'Get Ready With Me' from a Beyonce TikTok account or a series of coffee images from her social media. I (personally) would prefer THIS Beyonce. I dont want to know anything about her private life at all. I want to look at her from her work ONLY.
That’s how marketing and artist imagery works. Artists are supposed to represent the archetype of a type of person or be so weird they create that archetype.
"Marrying Beyonce is the best thing Jay-z did"...FACTS! In a lot of ways I always found Beyonce as aspirational (sans capitalism). The way she took command of her career, builds teams and delegates task AND protects her privacy is pretty remarkable.
I love Beyoncè so much and her branding as well is done so extremely well. We need more talking about how excellent some BLK Artist are at branding and marketing.
@@Redd91ful yeah but Emphasis on the fantasy part b/c majority of us won’t be rich no matter how “hard” we work. That’s not how our society works. There’s a reason why rich people make up “1%”. Someone’s “gotta lose” and it’ll be 99% of us 🤦🏽♀️
Not I. I appreciate black women in every station in life. I love my black womeness no need to fetishize another. That’s why I love her. That’s her message.
Y’all are fighting so hard in these comments to prove how you are so relatable to Beyoncé which is probably more delusional than her trying to pretend she relates to US. 😭
Beyoncé is a human being at the end of the day. I think others find her not relatable because she seems perfect. She challenges your own perceived inadequacies about yourself and when you look at yourself in all of your ordinary splendor and then compare yourself to Beyoncé, the grand entertainer, you fall short. And to that I say, that’s y’all problem. If she was out here spreading her business y’all will just talk about her and speculate like y’all do now. She ain’t about to be another Jada and Will spilling the beans about her personal business just to prove she is human and relatable. Please. She worked to get where she is today, it definitely wasn’t given. And you too can channel the energy and drive that she has to be your own version of the bad b*tch you want to be in your life. This album has so many messages and some of y’all are still sleep. But I digress 🤷🏾♀️
If even the mega-wealthy Oprah go through things like Karens refusing to serve her at clothing stores, some of us can relate even a little with all Black Americans.
@@Darkempress45 atp people just wanna hate/harshly criticize her for everything but her music. Like idc if Beyonce relates to me or not, I like her music and her performances. All this extra stuff about her personality is unnecessary
Most of Beyonce's Power comes from PRIVACY. Many people today want to publish ALL their business on Social Media. Just because You have fans it doesn't mean that you have to air your business out there. Beyonce understands that and Beyonce is a Virgo (A perfectionist by nature) so she monitors Herself in ALL directions. That's Her Power. The Ability to be Silent when EveryBody is disrespecting You. That's Beyonce. You gotta be a very Tough Woman if you are going to be Beyonce. It's Not Easy but she sure does Make it look Easy.
Exactly. She keeps an air of mystery which is intriguing- guessing about her keeps the media entertained and paparazzi chasing to uncover clues for clout.
I personally am more curious and interested by celebrities/stars/ public figures who are NOT relatable. It’s different for me, its intriguing. MJ for example was far from relatable or princess diana; yet I LOVE them. We don’t all only have to like those who we relate to, different is good and should be celebrated as well
MJ's life as a child star and his wealth are not relatable but I relate to him on a personal level, of having a traumatic childhood, not trusting adults as a result of people taking advantage of your trusting nature, being aware of injusticies and trying to help, wanting the world to be a better place and others ruining your efforts, misconstruing your intentions and taking things out of context, enormous stress ruining your physical health, being a caring person swallowed by greedy and apathetic people
Right… idk why people even try to make her relatable or not. It’s strange, we all saw her age in this industry and achieve what she has today. Her latest album is amazing, I do hope other artist last as long as her as we get older.
I didn't realize a lot of people related to Beyonce. She grew up sheltered which her own mother admitted, never had to work a 9 to 5 as far as we all know, and grew up middle class and republican. Not saying that she does, but she probably sees the world in a whole different light because she has the choice to.
im almost crying because nobody has ever agreed with me about her kinda cosplaying middle class. she has no reason to so it just baffles me why she does... its not a diss its just confusion.
i have the same annoyance about beyonce cosplaying bein “hood” as i feel about drake doin it 🙆♀️ lol! like why?? just be RICH & privileged….it’s ohhhkaaaaay lol
Church Girl- this reminded me of Megan Good, & while being married to her ex husband who is a preacher. Megan Good is a beautiful woman with effortless sex appeal- she’s very body positive and it shows in how she models and in her acting career. The level of shaming the church placed on her, the expectations of being the perfect preachers wife, the expectation of her even giving up her career to meet the “Christian Mold” made her anxious and depressed- she questioned her self worth so much her mental health literally deteriorated. The church would disrespect her while her ex husband was preaching live right in front of her…. But she never gave up on her faith even though she was constantly feeling the need to prove herself
I had no idea she was supposed to be relatable. I thought she was an inspiration for various forms of art: ie; music, fashion, dance, self-confidence. I seriously thought that was her whole persona. She's a multi-billion dollar individual..how in the world would she be considered relatable?
@@khusizwane7590 I mean... she not wring tho!! If we (average worker) would push back against the American workforce and take a stand, we might actually make some change, but ppl are too scared to hop off the hamster wheel because of fear. I get it, but I've quit jobs before because it was too much for my sanity and I moved on and I was fine! Sometimes, it's not always about money. Sometimes we have to take risks if we really want to be happy.
@@khusizwane7590 that statement a lot of ppl can relate to. You know how many ppl that’s not billionaires leaving their jobs because of the work environment? Literally has nothing to do with being a billionaire. Y’all think too deep about some stuff you may not relate but the next person will
Sometimes, Beyonce's appeal for me is her unrelatability. As an Asian/Eurasian woman, I have a fairly different heritage. I learned a lot picking through the cultural references in Lemonade. I also like the fact that she didn't bother to explain all her references. We as audiences should also get practice consuming art/media that we don't immediately understand. Life is so much more interesting that way!
Piggybacking off that. As a sea woman born and raised in my native country, I enjoy watching commentary videos/ channels of people from other countries, races, cultures, etc. The insight on their culture and niches is very interesting. I mostly watch American and english channels/videos. Ive noticed that Americans are concerned with race while British people are concerned with class because of their monarchy. It was also interesting how in england micro agressions and discrimination can happen to scots and irish people by brits.
I agree. Especially the she keeps up with the popular things. I remember when brown skin girl came out. It was all about black girl power. And black women empowerment.
You know I always interpreted "I'm letting go of this body" in Church Girl as Bey removing herself from the church (for the night), since the church is known as the *body* of Christ. So it was a bit of word play/double entendre of liberation (getting loose, AND freeing herself from the confines of church doctrine).
I’m a black woman who grew up in the Church. My family is very religious. For years, I felt ashamed of my body especially after I was m word by my stepfather. I blamed myself and thought I must of did something for a grown man to prey on me. I was also SA’d by my guy friend at 21 which I also blamed myself for as well. I had a lot of negative feelings about my body that took me years to unlearn. I felt trapped in my own body. Even when I decided to get intimate with my boyfriend, it was difficult at first but he was very patient and helped me worked through it. Church Girl really hit me and I really appreciate Beyoncé for making this song.
As a person who has been through sexual trauma as well, my heart goes out to you. I am glad there is a song which can help you channel and redirect your energy...
I've never really told this to anyone but i was sa'ed by 2 different pastors in when I was 11 and 15. Thought it was normal since a friend told me about hers (friend attends the same church and is 2yrsyounger than me) the chruch i attend pre-11yrs pastor cheated on his wife bev she couldn't bare children 😬 I used ro see them as mentors but all pastors I've know my entire life have been shit so I couldn't care less. Now 23, I still go to church and try to be faithful to God. I feel irritated whenever i see these men...1 of them is a friend's dad so we still like see eachother. When I heard church girl, I don't know, I don't have friends and I don't party but church girl gave me this sort of freedom that I can't explain like... I felt happy for other church girls who get to be so expressive of their sexual side. Tbh we don't know what these sisters go through especially those who are 'old enough to be married' I genuinely hope everyone finds happiness in their lives because we deserve it!
my 2 cents : people needs to stop being so desperate to relate to celebrities , enjoy their work and mind your business . Not even other people in Hollywood can relate to Beyonce , let alone a random person with a 9-5 job
I believe in God and I hate it for those who don't. So let's say I live my life according to God's word (the bible) and I die and find there's no God, then I've lived a good life and that's the end. Her lifestyle, wealth, and current way of living is not relatable. But her will to work, perfect things, and give her all can be related and inspiring. I feel like people don't see Beyoncé as a human being. They either see her as a machine or this God figure. She is human! She can make mistakes and try new things. Geez! I love Beyoncé and how she has preserved her career and made such a name out of herself. That right there is inspiring. Especially to black girls all over the world.
"Beyoncé is beautiful, super talented, sexy and a multimillionaire, yet women find her so relatable. I don't get it. I'd never look at Dwayne The Rock Johnson talking about his struggles and go 'you tell em Dwayne. Tell em about the struggles of guys like us". Michael Che I must admit, before I heard Che say that, I lowkey think I did delusionally find Beyonce relatable so he was definitely talking about me, an average African woman 😂
Also my thing with the whole “she married Jay-Z for money” is kind of ignoring how, to me, it seems like she had to grow up a lot faster than usual… like yeah it was her dream to be a singer, but the way her Dad seems to have been working his ass off to make her a super famous star seems… toxic? Idk… but also like, the girl was literally 20-22 when she married him LOL if anything, I would’ve been side-eyeing Jay-Z…. He’s literally 20 years older than her? And speculatively and ALLEGEDLY was interested in Aaliyah before that… also, in her wedding vows she told him, “you taught me how to be a woman” so… idk how people come to the conclusion that she was gold-digging when it’s a rumour within entertainment how predatory older men can be??
@Amariie my apologies for the age discrepancy for when she got married but weren’t they dating when she was only in her early 20s? Still, if anything, I’d definitely be looking at him before judging her, but it was a different time.
love you and love Motha Beyoncé of the House of Capitalism. this album is a sonic masterpiece in every sense of the word. it’s not just disco, it’s house, dance, EDM, pop, R&B, hyper pop, ballroom music etc. it’s a body of work that in my personal opinion allowed her to be free of overthinking and i can relate to that.
I love it too. Choosing not to participate don't increase black wealth or black power or black presence. So, I'm vogueing all through this capitalist continent. Im going to let the socialists do their work though.
Completely disagree. All she did was find a niche culture and steal from them creatively without doing any crediting at all. House music is a distinctly black and LGBT space. I love "break my soul" but beyonce doesn't even credit the queer black person (big freedia) doing the background vocals. Really Beyonce? BTW stealing from a subculture and using your platform to rebrand it and sell it to a mainstream audience is LITERALLY what white people have been doing to black people for 100 years. so we are really out here congratulating beyonce for using the same tricks that have been used against black people for a century? I mean I guess. We love the yassification of exploitation. Beyonce is literally 0% relatable. The fact that millions of working class people disagree with that statement is a testament to the fact that branding works.
I love the fact that you called out the community for the power we can give these people. You’re right, I never would have been lifted by your insight if Beyoncé hadn’t been the topic. Sure the algorithm played its part (and that says something in itself) but I’m here listening because while I’m disinterested in over glorifying any celebrities status, in a name power lurks. Thank you for sharing your open, honest thoughts which can allow deeper conversation
Some of these commenters didn’t watch the video. She isn’t saying Beyoncé has to be relatable. She’s saying she cosplays sometimes through her lyrics as being understanding of poor black people but can’t relate at all. And actively underpaying employees. Plus clearly the creator loves Beyoncé and is being considerate. She’s very kind in her critique I think.
I’m here for it being normalized but I’m against poor hygiene because poor hygiene does in fact cause skin/inflammatory issues so if the hair is prone to irritation from sweat, shave it off sis. You never hear about women who keep their hair and the actual maintenance (shampooing/exfoliating) of their arm pits or pubic area or what’s used to reduce odors
"It's really up to us to decide for ourselves what contradictions we choose to ignore and forgive". And that's really it for me 🤷🏽♀️ I don't have to relate to an artist but I do need to be moved by them. The discussion around "Church girl" had me in my feels as a woman who was a church girl, grew up in church, loved church so much but grew up to be a woman who realised that church won't let me love my whole authentic self. Cryin, pissin & throwin up 😄 indeed. Thank you for the introduction to DonnellWrites.

Haven't finished the vid yet, but the section about being a church girl resonates with me. I grew up in the church, but I've never really felt completely comfortable or safe in the many churches I've attended. The older I got, the less comfortable I feel being active in church. Imagine trying to engage in something as emotional and deep as religion in a space were you don't feel safe at all. I'm still a believer, but I prefer to worship and pray in solitude because that when I feel safe. Funnily enough, I feel the most accepted and loved in spaces unrelated to religion.
I feel the same way. I have god in my hear but yes I admit I’m not a perfect Muslim, but there is no such thing as a perfect Muslim, or Christian, or Jew etc, but everyone around me in my community act is if they are perfect and they are so judgmental to their own who isn’t as religious to them or just different in general. I have never been comfortable being around my own, because I can’t be myself around them, because I’m not very cultural and religious like them. I was born and raised in America and I have been around Americans more than my kind. So of course odds are im going to be different. I’m Arabic and Muslim, but I don’t have friends who are Arabic and Muslim. All my friends are black, white, Asian, Latino, Jews, etc because they don’t judge me and look at me in a weird way for being different. The older I get the more I get pushed away from being around my own, and i only feel comfortable and accepted when im around people who are outside of my religion and culture. I also have friends who are atheist, but they never judged me like my people do.
When I first heard Church girl it made me cry. Honestly the entire album wrenched out a sense of freedom in me and liberation I didn’t fully understand that I needed. The liberation this album brought me will never be forgotten.
I have an idea to add: What if Beyonce is a modern myth? It is better to maintain the mystery of her as an art figure if you don't know too much about her. It allows to work on the myth and have a lot of variantion of it. Weather this is good or bad, you can see how the "story" around Beyoncé remains relatively vague and still she always reinvents herself with every new album. What do you think about this? Can artists be a myth?
i think the issue with “relatability” is that we think of material things lmao. u can relate to someone’s way of thinking, way of creating etc. i think when ppl stop trying to relate to “having money” then u can probably see past peoples privileges
That is so true. I noticed a lot of people are using the fact that she's rich as to why they can't relate to her. Which is true from a financial perspective. However there are other ways you can relate to someone besides money . Also if someone relates to a artist I don't necessarily makes them delusional
I likes this take 🙏🏾perception, opinions, morals and values are also factors in which people take into account when forming relationships. Why can’t it be the same for artists they support?🤭
This might be one of my fav videos of yours. I don't listen to Beyonce or even know much about her but I was engaged the whole time and every single point you made had me thinking about it and relating with my own experiences of things like celebrity power, worship and allyship vs exploitation, religion, etc. I especially loved hearing Donnell's point of view because I related to his way of thinking about religion but I never see anyone talk about it like that. Also the part about giving celebrities the position of allies for doing the bare minimum gave me a lot to chew on.
I know this video is old, and someone prob pointed it out by now- but Vogues are (car) tires... not sunglasses! Other than that, really enjoying your channel and perspective! (You are witty and funny too) Keep going!!
I’ve been waiting for someone to talk about Church girl on its own. I’m from the Deep South and grew up Baptist and that song hits very differently and very deeply for me
I definitely relate to that song. My mother grew up in the church and left but brought us back to that whole white Jesus indoctrination around age 7. I don’t enjoy the misleading interpretations that are often presented in Baptist church spaces. It made me hate my natural self. Church Girl was a whole sermon for me.
We actually know little about Beyoncé which I don’t mind and I’m glad it’s that way. She does her job / passion which is to entertain us via art. Kind of reminds me of Sade, we literally know nothing about the woman yet she’s recognized globally and has been loved for decades. You can admire and appreciate someone and not relate to them.
@@BriaBarrows I do as well... In some type of way, especially based on someone having a massive fan base and people naming a fanbase collective off of you (bey- hive, barbz, etc cetera)...
Also why I LOVE Frank Ocean, he gave us the artistry and work and found joy in it then went about his day! I feel like that TO ME is what makes an artist an artist, they stay authentic to themselves.
Okay first, I love the two different looks and change of scenery! Almost offers a shift in perspective along with retention of the audience. And finally, “She could not have done this alone” 😭 We need to hold ourselves accountable
i agree we kinda created a monster. but with her type of talent and showmanship, i do not blame myself or others for being captivated and mesmerized, she’s so hypnotic 🌀😵💫
I can say im honestly surprised that people actually thought Beyonce or any celebrity were relatable. I think because a ton of people are chronically online they form these parasocial relationships so when you criticize an artist then they take it as a personal attack. This is why I personally think parasocial relationships are a bit dangerous.
The way you structured this vid is straight up artful and the commentary and analysis is astounding. I had mix feelings/opinions about the album when it first came out which kept me from listening to it in it's entirety but I just listened to it in its entirety yesterday with my mom. You mentioned things that I hadn't even picked up on and ofc inspire me to think about this, and her, in new ways
Okay but I didn't get as much disco from this album as I did house and club ?!? I mean disco is Doja's "Say So," Dua Lipa's "Levitating", Lizzo's "About Damn Time" and disco has been peppered in pop music all over the radio the past few years. I felt like Bey took the next logical step to bring back late-70s house to the masses 🤷♀️
I totally agree, I feel like she's late to the party, she study the new artist, revered them, jock their style, it's good but not authentic.....and I'ma Beyonce fan
Shoutout to you and everyone understanding the nuance in Church Girl. I guess you truly have to have experienced it or have knowledge of the black church to understand it. Tee is so intentional and exact with her words. The way she speaks is how my mind operates if only I could express this well verbally. This is very true about Beyoncé and how she puts together albums that are soul-soothing but I just cannot relate to her. She is certainly a free soul. Something tells me her trips around the world were more than just vacations ESPECIALLY Africa. She's another level of confident and free even while being shy and graceful.
She’s always been a favorite just because of how she continues to do what she was put here to do. Through with love on the last DC album is what opened my eyes to the fact I was in abusive relationship. 48 hours later I was out and on the road driving from Ohio to Michigan. She will always hold a special place in my heart.
Oh girl. This is my favorite video of you THUS FAR. I am a huge Beyonce fan, but there’s certainly a current renaissance (if you will) around the interrogation of her class status and how she clearly prioritizes that above her Blackness. This was chef’s kiss!
Black Americans are disproportionately poor in the USA, where Beyoncé is from. Acquiring wealth is a means of survival for us. She’s a mother to three children…in the USA. People never seem to place these things in their proper context.

Say I don't believe in the word of God and I live a sinful life. And when I die I find out there is a God. Now I'm screwed and get to spend eternity in hell! So, I'm gonna live for God!
@@QueenOfHearts-zuzh That’s one fucked up way of thinking, implying you only “live for god” out of fear of possibly burning and suffering for all eternity. Also to claim you lose nothing by “living for god” is just not true either. You possibly lose yourself in the process, the ability to live freely, the ability to not judge and condemn others for their “sinful” ways… what kind of life is that? P.s. what did this comment have anything to do with god to begin with?
When Beyonce talks about quitting her 9-5 job, like girl wth 😭😂 Edit: The people taking this comment seriously are goofy, no one is trying to attack your queen...stans are annoying😂😂

Just want to say: thank you for having underarm hair! Ive been struggling with the idea that I could dress "feminine," have underarm hair, and be confident/feel beautiful. As a black woman who teeters between dressing fem or masc and has waivering self-esteem, I thank you for this representation. You look beautiful ❤️ ❤
As a beyhive Stan… I loved this video. It was so educational. I too have thought about the sincerity of Beyoncé messages in her albums through these recent years. Great Video !
@@n.a.199 that’s not what anyone said. They’re in agreement that it’s not going to be possible to genuinely relate to someone so private. Not a dig, just a factual observation.
I appreciate you for acknowledging that this criticism can be valid and exist at the same time as the sheer bliss and joy that this album is. It shouldn’t take away from anything, just an addition to a complex conversation ♥️
Great video. Your so articulate and honest which I really love. But Speaking of Beyoncé and profitability, I wouldn’t say she is just profiting off of blm, queerness or etc. (current cultural trends) because whenever she is vocalizing her stance or calling attention to these movements through her music she is taking the time to do immense research. For example, I didn’t know how deep lemonade went in terms of the history she included and the deeper meanings of the lyrics until I sat down and listened to the Dissect podcast. Also when accepting awards for lemonade she called attention to the people she was trying uplift. Also prior to that she was involved in the blm movement (marching & charity). For this album she said this was personal for her due to her relationship with her God mother, uncle Johnny who sadly passed away from HIV and who introduced her to a lot of the music that is included in the album. Also one thing I noticed is that she gets a lot of flack for the immense credits on her albums. Which Is just something people do to take away from the work that she personally put into her music. But her “over crediting” more so then a lot of other artists is very intentional. For this album alone she credited over 300 people. Some who have never gotten their proper credit for helping curate the genre along side all the queer artists featuring in the album. So I thing it was more than just a cash grab and more so a renaissance and celebration of this genre, of blackness and queerness. I feel like I type too much lol but I just wanted to state my opinion on the subject.
I’m kinda glad you brought up the exploitation of queerness and political tensions, I really struggle with nuances when it comes to “death of the artist” type stuff and sometimes opinions seem so polarized, it’s hard to express that both feelings can exist without being paradoxical! Also you look so beautiful as always ❤
everything you said rang sooo true! i’ve always found it weird the level people hold celebrities, especially those of the status similar to Beyonce, with such reverence. i’ve definitely evaluated my own feelings towards well known people and how weird parasocial relationships are. a great video overall!
you're one of a few creators that actually spark some sort of intellectual chain in my brain, even when my identity and experiences are the opposite from the people you discuss in your videos. like, you make it much easier to understand certain concepts, so thank you for that.
the way you include to say “i gotta work on that” when talking about your flaws makes my day. seeing other people verbalize bettering themselves helps me so much🥹♥️
That discussion on Church Girl really hit home as a black woman, raised in the church I felt every part of that conversation. I also feel like this video as a whole gave me a renewed appreciation of the album and I can listen again through a new lense
Keep it up, she gon help usher yall to a lifetime with Satan if she doesn’t repent. People who turned their backs on the church just simply had 0 relationship with God. They put what the church wanted over God. They didn’t get to know Him. Y’all can be liberated if y’all want-been there done that. But what God expects from us has nothing to do with meeting low standards. Y’all just want to do whatcha wanna do and cry later. See how many people were scared when COVID hit? Now imagine a life without God and no possibility of getting Him back. Wont be able to handle that. But go on. Let Beyoncé -a satanist-trick y’all to “liberation.”
I never thought Beyoncé was relatable and idc to. Her relatability doesn’t subtract from the footprint she’s left on the culture as a whole AND black culture specifically. She is really is a once in a lifetime artist and performer. She’s an outlier and that’s totally fine
too true, on the mainstreaming of ballroom culture and its profitability . there's an uncomfortable gap between Azealia Banks interpolating vogue moves and ballroom beats in earlier singles, in a time where "queer rap" was sort of figuring itself out, and Beyonce returning to some of those same leitfmotifs post-"Pose" or "Legendary".
I don't think many people are capable of the objectivity that you've done in this video and WE KNOW how much you love Beyoncé. But please know it was nothing short of amazing. And yes honey that wig is GIVING!!
I love that you can be critical about Beyoncé even though you love her the house down. While I call her a queen, queens are never innocent or untouchable. They are still human after all. She's been in this industry almost her entire life and everything is most certainly about strategy in entertainment. Sometimes I wonder if she'd be as successful if she were everything she is but darker skinned. There's something that bothers me about the pedestal we put celebrities on, enough to truly disrespect other in their defense as if pedestals can't get knocked over, cracked, etc. I think Beyoncé has really shaped stan culture too. Or maybe she's just the first one I noticed it about with the rise of internet. And we don't actually know too much about her personally. I love her alot but I would never call her fully relatable, especially when she's not always the one writing her lyrics. She just knows how to play the game.
Well said. The mention of potential colorism is interesting, especially if you consider how her physical appearance, certain features in specific, changed over time. I’ll just leave it at that, those who are curious can search.
Beyoncé would have had a very different career if she were dark skinned, and it's hard to say if she'd have reached the same level as success. People struggle to attribute her career success to colorism because she does have the talent, work ethic, creative control and artistic brilliance to back up her accomplishments. The other side of that coin is that a dark skinned entertainer with the same attributes would not likely get the same shine.
She is soooo talented and I love Beyoncé. But no, if she were dark skinned, she would not have obtained the same level of success. Her being lighter skinned played a huge roll in her success. Her dad said the same thing, you can look up his interview.
Exactly. they r entertainers. they r supposed to be selling an ideal and art. not relatability. when they started the whole "relatable" schtick, particularly being all on social media and enticing the stans to feel like they are "just like them" , that really lost some of the star mystique and its bullshit cause they clearly are not just like the average person anymore
@@allanascott9512 I don’t think they joined social media to be relateable with their fans. Have you seen what majority of celebs post on their media page?
She's not relatable at all, I agree. But please put some respect on her craft. Beyoncé is not just a celebrity, she's an artist. Known for her art. Not her reality show. Not her instagram posts. Her art!
Did you watch the video all the way through? It is okay if you don't have the language to participate in this discussion but throwing out cherry-picked responses to an argument Tee did not even make is not going to be a strong enough deflection for the conversation here not to be had.
I only ever payed attention to her music, it was a pay-for-service kind of thing. Some time ago I went to her Instagram and to me it simply screamed “billionaire”. Watching her felt like watching an extraterrestrial being. lol. I personally don’t understand the adoration and devotion that some people have for this lady, but as long as I don’t have to pay for that, I couldn’t care less. If people are peaceful and happy in the ‘beehive’ then more power to them
10:10 she cannot say "I didn't want this power" lmao. Her dad and she planned for it since the itsy bitsy beginnings. Stealing song credits, marketing herself as a "triple threat" and so much more we can't see.
The song Church Girl is so powerful and liberating. Lots hate it but don’t really look and analyze into the lyrics. The message it brings really got to me. Confidence is a huge part of it, not feeling shamed, guilty nor judged. Such an emotional and empowering song. Edit: I’m not a part of the hive.
I definitely understand it. The church is definitely responsible for a lot of repressed feelings with women and even low self esteem. It’s ok to love who you are and feel sexy and confident.
People were pisst off, and a whole Pastor did a sermon calling her out. In my opinion she was being too nice. She should've called it CHURCH H0ES. Because the majority of Church members do more fu(cking than a porno star.
Tee Vogue’s are high quality tires. 🤦🏾♀️ And dudes from the South back in the day would get old cars and trick them out until they rival that of modern luxury vehicle in prices. Thanks for the breakdown. 🙏🏾 I’ve been waiting for this one.
I often don’t assume the best intention with celebrities because they are so far removed from regular life so I do feel like Beyoncé aligns herself with causes in a manner that is calculated rather than caring and exploitative for her own financial gain. But I also accept the fact that I don’t know her personally and don’t know how she truly thinks or feels, just like the next stranger. It is just funny to me how, because she has the platform she is able to profit from really anything she chooses. I wonder if I had the platform would I do the same? I love what you said about labeling celebrities advocates and allies though. Whether they truly believe in the cause or not, if they don’t have the proper experience and dedication we should be more careful who we as regular folks make the face of our issues…
Eh, I don’t pretend to be living a multimillionaire lifestyle or know what it’s like, but I am sexy, talented, and beautiful. Do people really feel like Beyonce is relatable though? I’ve always thought part of her appeal, especially in the past few years, is the fact she’s inaccessible and still has some of that mystique celebrities used to have.
The reason we have all these personalities doing dumb s*** is because everyone is trying to be relatable. The constant need to find things you relate to at times can be indicative of insecurities because you always need some sort of validation to confirm thoughts about yourself, interests, etc. I often see in the comments section people saying oh my "oh my gosh I love that you don't flaunt your wealth, you are so down to earth", which can be translated to you make me not feel bad about my circumstances and watching you allows me not to confront my reality and do something about it. This is why we have a lot of jealous people, all my friends are different from me some are more successful, prettier, fitter than me etc. We are all secure in who we are and don't need to play to certain ideas in order to relate to one another. YOU DO NOT NEED TO LIKE THINGS YOU RELATE TO ONLY, SOMETIME YOU JUST LIKE SOMETHING, AND THATS IT!
The accuracy in this comment tho . People aren't ready for such conversations . A lot of people are living in a way that is inauthentic because they're trying to be a vibe . Whether Beyonce is relatable or not , I'ma still stream the music because I like her songs
the desperate need for relatability and outside validation is insane to me - it's like people have zero desire to develop a rich and interesting life on their own so they turn to entertainment and celebs instead.
Love your content. Kudos on the hard work you put into your videos. This album of Beyoncé's is NOT disco. As a musician who has lived through the era (and loves disco btw) the rhythms and style(s) simply are not disco. Disco is a type of dance music, but not all dance music is Disco. Some examples of disco are The Bee Gees (credited with creating the genre on the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever), SalSoul Orchestra, Donna Summer, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Heatwave, A Taste of Honey, Lipps Inc., and Amii Stewart as examples. It's killing me you're calling this album Disco.
Lool i thought the same thing as soon as she said it was a disco album…and I didn’t even listen that deeply to the album! Dance music/EDM influences, very much yes! But straight up disco? Nah

I just wanna take a moment to give a full standing ovation to @Tee Noir for not only the wisdom...but for the sheer progression of thought happening here and that is encouraged. Pure beauty and inspiring! Such a great job of holding us older ones accountable too! Beyoncé is the entertainer of my life, and I thank (the majority of) you so much for understanding that it is possible to both celebrate her incomparable artistry and call attention to areas of ethical disappointment. 🐝💖
The polarity of this comment section is very interesting!

Same . I'm just here for the music . Reliability is non of my concern

Millionaires are unrelatable too. I have no clue why y’all think being extremely anti-Billionaire is doing something.

You know I always interpreted "I'm letting go of this body" in Church Girl as Bey removing herself from the church (for the night), since the church is known as the *body* of Christ. So it was a bit of word play/double entendre of liberation (getting loose, AND freeing herself from the confines of church doctrine).
Right
Actually no.

I'm so sorry that happened to you and I appreciate you being open enough to share your experience.
I hope you are doing better I wish you peace love and tons if support ❤️
Same here I grew up around that as well I had to except of myself that I loved NOT the image everyone expected of me.
As a person who has been through sexual trauma as well, my heart goes out to you. I am glad there is a song which can help you channel and redirect your energy...
I've never really told this to anyone but i was sa'ed by 2 different pastors in when I was 11 and 15. Thought it was normal since a friend told me about hers (friend attends the same church and is 2yrsyounger than me) the chruch i attend pre-11yrs pastor cheated on his wife bev she couldn't bare children 😬
I used ro see them as mentors but all pastors I've know my entire life have been shit so I couldn't care less.
Tbh we don't know what these sisters go through especially those who are 'old enough to be married'
I genuinely hope everyone finds happiness in their lives because we deserve it!
my 2 cents : people needs to stop being so desperate to relate to celebrities , enjoy their work and mind your business . Not even other people in Hollywood can relate to Beyonce , let alone a random person with a 9-5 job

I must admit, before I heard Che say that, I lowkey think I did delusionally find Beyonce relatable so he was definitely talking about me, an average African woman 😂
That’s kinda the same thought I have when people say that about Chapelle. Like HOW?!?!!?
Also my thing with the whole “she married Jay-Z for money” is kind of ignoring how, to me, it seems like she had to grow up a lot faster than usual… like yeah it was her dream to be a singer, but the way her Dad seems to have been working his ass off to make her a super famous star seems… toxic? Idk… but also like, the girl was literally 20-22 when she married him LOL if anything, I would’ve been side-eyeing Jay-Z…. He’s literally 20 years older than her? And speculatively and ALLEGEDLY was interested in Aaliyah before that… also, in her wedding vows she told him, “you taught me how to be a woman” so… idk how people come to the conclusion that she was gold-digging when it’s a rumour within entertainment how predatory older men can be??

love you and love Motha Beyoncé of the House of Capitalism. this album is a sonic masterpiece in every sense of the word. it’s not just disco, it’s house, dance, EDM, pop, R&B, hyper pop, ballroom music etc. it’s a body of work that in my personal opinion allowed her to be free of overthinking and i can relate to that.
Not the house of capitalism 😂💀
😂😂😂 yess

Yeah. She is all marketing.
i think the issue with “relatability” is that we think of material things lmao. u can relate to someone’s way of thinking, way of creating etc. i think when ppl stop trying to relate to “having money” then u can probably see past peoples privileges

Also you look so beautiful as always ❤

too true, on the mainstreaming of ballroom culture and its profitability . there's an uncomfortable gap between Azealia Banks interpolating vogue moves and ballroom beats in earlier singles, in a time where "queer rap" was sort of figuring itself out, and Beyonce returning to some of those same leitfmotifs post-"Pose" or "Legendary".

@@Ruby-kr6fh Exactly. like ryan destiny
i literally said this shit in the beyonce subreddit and somebody reported my account for s*icidal comments/post
😂😂😂😂
Wow, that’s crazy. You weren’t being disrespectful, right? SMH with these hardcore fans🤣‼️
Not every celebrity need to be relatable, they’re celebrities for a reason
I agree
Exactly. they r entertainers. they r supposed to be selling an ideal and art. not relatability. when they started the whole "relatable" schtick, particularly being all on social media and enticing the stans to feel like they are "just like them" , that really lost some of the star mystique and its bullshit cause they clearly are not just like the average person anymore
@@BriaBarrows Indeed sister. That’s what makes this a great song.
People were pisst off, and a whole Pastor did a sermon calling her out. In my opinion she was being too nice. She should've called it CHURCH H0ES. Because the majority of Church members do more fu(cking than a porno star.
Church girl is a ratchet song
@@RiseAwakenedOne and…?
Tee Vogue’s are high quality tires. 🤦🏾♀️ And dudes from the South back in the day would get old cars and trick them out until they rival that of modern luxury vehicle in prices. Thanks for the breakdown. 🙏🏾 I’ve been waiting for this one.
Your make up … your whole look is absolutely beautiful. YOU LOOK STUNNING DARLIN
Thank you so much!
I love how she broke down Church Girl. She vocalized my almost Exact feelings I felt when I first heard this song.
"where is your wife" lol so true and so funny, damn well done
Nah
You are my favorite content creator. Hands down.
And a big thank you for releasing this precious content on your RUclips channel for those of us who don’t have it to be a Patreon member ( yet!).
You are appreciated!!!!
Just wanted to comment regarding the Vouges - they’re a company that manufacture luxury tires, wheels and car accessories. Typically, you can distinguish Vogue Tyres as they often have a colored (mostly yellow or red) stripe on the tire!
Love your commentary per usual "10 10 10s across the board!"
Great info, thanks!
I just wanna take a moment to give a full standing ovation to @Tee Noir for not only the wisdom...but for the sheer progression of thought happening here and that is encouraged. Pure beauty and inspiring! Such a great job of holding us older ones accountable too! I see no issues with the way Tee Noir addressed the time before they were born, especially since the actions (and inactions) taken in the past impact the present! This video just has all the things. PREACH!
you went off Tee! shoutout for highlighting the Black southernness of this album, and Beyonce herself.
this video is amazing and honestly very healing as a fan who loved her a little too much, and went through the grieving process when her stance on izrahell was NOT reflective of the message in her music.
Girl, not you having Donnel on here. I LOVE the both of you *screaming*🥹🎀🫶🏾
Auntie checking in; Vogues are tires. Basically part of the uniform for classic box Chevys and Cadillacs.
