We aren't wrong. I lost count of how many times I saw them. My Glastonbury 92 ticket was just to see The Fall and my mates thought me insane. I got to see Tom Jones too, so bonus in the surreal dept. I miss Mark too and was recently asked to explain the 'Wings' video to a female friend, who - on seeing the link I sent - asked what was going on? I explained The Fall weren't so much a band you saw, or listened to, but rather 'experienced'. She still didn't get it. The Fall the Marmite of British bands. You either love them, or hate them. Especially those sorta "stream-of-consciousness" interludes; "...where have all the lithe smooth-headed youth gone with their bags of sub-quality bugle and their girlfriends with coffee-stain tans..." (I'm paraphrasing but they have a real elegiac and wistful quality to them). Both The Hanley Bros. books are well worth a read too especially if you like recording minutiae...I love Steve and Paul's differing ways of describing the gestation of "Iceland" in the studio, it makes the hairs on the back of your neck tingle, like the song! I'm still not convinced as to what "roll up for the underpants show" means though tbh!

All due respect to Scanlon, Hanley and the rest ... but this final lineup of The Fall might have been their best because they stayed together so long. The communication here is almost telepathic, they could turn on a dime.
No I don't agree, this lineup is incredible, but remember Scanlon and Hanley recorded Grotesque to This Nations Saving Grace. These tracks don't overpower them albums.

I know it's a gross generalisation but to my mind virtually everything the Fall recorded after Extricate were were degrees of "drunk bloke shouting in an underpass".
I think the Fall shifted in 87 from the dense lyricism of NWRA or New Face In Hell or Garden with a million words to sloganeering and catchphrases ‘I’m a latch key kid/I’m a 50 year old man/we are Sparta FC’’ I like the second version better - without it The Fall could be compared to new order or wire but by evolving the form where in a few words he could be simplistic and direct he made The Fall the best rock n roll group of the 2000s

This is magnificent. The opening track is... action-packed, it has "brillliant movie theme" written all over it. The Fall should have done all the Bond films, I think, same with Eurovision song contests. The Fall are Britain, at its best. I guess I should say 'were Britain'. RIP MES, the band, that Britain. God knows, we need you now.

Saw this band in Edinburgh (Picture House) MES did 4 songs then fucked off and an audience member took over for a few songs before the bouncer threw him off stage. Then MES came back after being retrieved from the pub across the road (Shakespeare Bar). One of the best gigs I have ever been to. The Fall, always different but always the same...Peel.

True version is - stage lights came up during a gig and the soundman was eating a salad Smith had given specific instructions about the light show, and rightly felt for an hour or two a night he had to work he should focus on his job. Much like the 'brown m&ms' story which is used to call rock bands divas with ridiculous riders, but the reality was explained later by David Lee Roth - "Van Halen was the first to take 850 par lamp lights - huge lights - around the country,"Roth said. "At the time, it was the biggest production ever." In many cases, the venues were too outdated or inadequately prepared to set up the band's sophisticated stage. "If I came backstage, having been one of the architects of this lighting and staging design, and I saw brown M&Ms on the catering table, then I guarantee the promoter had not read the contract rider, and we would have to do a serious line check" of the entire stage setup, Roth said.
Kinda like an 80s90s version of Trout Mask Replica. The underlying structure is similar but the time scale is different and more suitable to the period.
