The thing that makes Pearl’s monologue so profound yet terrifying is how relatable it is. I found myself almost tearing up at her monologue because I saw parts of myself in her, even though she’s done extremely violent things. It gave me chills! This movie is so masterfully done.
I know it's such a small detail that doesn't matter but Pearl actually DID tell the projectionist that she was married since he asks her a question about her having a husband and she tells him he's overseas. I feel like the farm works as a prison that Pearl was condemned to for her actions. With Howard serving as both her warden and also her enabler. The fact that she never leaves even after 60 years either essentially no friends or family aside from her husband, really highlights that fact.
Mia Goth is a modern day Scream Queen in the X Trilogy. I like how Dead Meat is covering this film to expose this film to a new audience who hasn't seen it or heard of it.
So her Marine most likely survived the hell of Bellau Wood, only to come home to the most nightmarish dinner scene outside of the trenches - and yet he still stayed with her!? Now that’s love!
I personally have it that Howard had as much of a taste for blood and cruelty as Pearl did, but since he was an early 20th century soldier he was able to hide it for longer. He was probably just surprised to learn Pearl was like that too.
That long monologue was truly chilling. I was on edge the entire time, just waiting for it to flip back around to show Mitzy. The fact that it's a still shot on Pearl shows her mindset, I think. She's not thinking about Mitzy, or Howard, or really anyone but herself. It sticks to your ribs long after the movie ends. I love it so dearly.
I love how Pearl names all her farm animals after famous actresses at the time. Theda (the alligator) was named after Theda Bara, one of the earliest sex symbols on film. I LOVE THESE MOVIES.
It's amazing how much this movie is an adaptation of the Wizard of Oz without actually being that on purpose. Mitsi is the cowardly lion(wears fur), her dad is the tin man(is basically rusted from is disease) and Pearl is both Dorothy and the Wicked Witch. It's like Dorothy never got blown away as a child so she grew up to learn the hard way that "there's no place like home."
A fun and oddly accurate fact about the Loony tunes ending is Porky Pig’s stutter is an example of revision which is when someone with a stutter can’t get a word out so they change it. He’s actually trying to say “the end” but gets stuck, so he switches to “that’s all folks”

Pearl is such a well made movie. An actual good attempt at Disney styled Horror instead of "uhmmm what if mickey mouse but he had a chainsaw?" And Mia was robbed of Award Noms. She killed it, that monologue is so good.

One of my favorite parts of this movie is how you feel sorry for Pearl despite her being murderous. It almost makes you want her to be able to leave, even if you don't condone her murderous behavior. It made me feel sorry for her in a way "X" did not. I also like how Mitzy was portrayed as friendly towards Pearl. Rather than being a stereotypical rich girl who looks down on Pearl for being less fortunate, Mitzy is nothing but kind and endearing to Pearl, even offering to listen to her at the end when Pearl delivers her monologue.
this is not only one of my favorite horror movies, but one of my favorite movies in general! Wait! It's 1918 and Pearl goes to a talky? That poor bastard. Imagine going off to the worst war in human history and the only thing that keeps you going is the thought that your family is safe back home. And when you finally return and you think it's all over you walk into your home to find your in-laws rotting from injuries that remind you of the trenches and your wife smiling and acting like nothing's wrong.
20:20 I'll bet there was some inspiration from the last shot of The Graduate, when Mike Nichols was too busy to shoot what was basically just pointing the camera at Katharine Ross and Dustin Hoffman at the back of bus, so he had somebody else do it and told them, "just say cut". The guy forgot to do it, which is why it's a long lingering take instead of a freeze frame, but the show of them looking so happy in the beginning is tough to hold for a long time and those smiles start to fade, leading to one of the most iconic shots in Hollywood history.
I definitely can. my 10th grade year I was determined to get a role and had studied the character and thought about all the ways I wanted to personalize my performance as her. and the thing is, I initially DID get the role, but then our director changed his mind and gave it to someone else. I cried for two class periods
I was really hoping the "to the numbers" bit would have the scarecrow suddenly come to life as Zoran when James kissed it and start to say "Your kiss has transformed me back into-" and have James just go "No, not doin that" and walk off screen. Idk I thought it'd be funny.
What's especially harrowing is that even though Howard is clearly shown to be horrified by what Pearl's done, they've still somehow stuck together as a couple by the events of "X", which take place decades later. Did Pearl blackmail him into keeping what happened a secret between them? Did Howard already know that there would be no use in trying to bring her to justice? Imagine how long he had to live with her knowing the shit she pulled.
The dialogue that Pearl has at the end of the movie was genuinely amazing, but also insanely uncomfortable because of how it stuck on Pearl’s face for the entire duration. Which was also probably the point so, yeah.
I think this is the greatest theater experience I ever had. Completely empty large theater, during the slower first half I was pacing around, doing jumping jacks, sit ups and pushups because you never get to do that while watching a movie in theaters. Admittedly I was enjoying it but felt the slow pacing. I figured Id just walk out and watch it on streaming where I could watch at my pace and as I was walking down the steps the dinner scene happened and the Mother said “you want to leave don’t you” and I laughed so hard and found a random seat and laughed some more.
“uh oh, took off a little scalp with that one” in response of pearl brushing her mother’s corpse made me laugh so hard i had to stop the video for a little
10:10 I KNEW I RECOGNISED THIS!! I live in Whanganui and have my whole life - I've spent many hours in that theatre and the alleys around it. Downtown Whanganui is full of beautiful art deco buildings and I love when they feature in movies.
I loved the amount of thought that went into background props/set pieces. A few favorites was framed picture of an Ivory Billed Woodpecker in the farm, a now extinct bird. You see the mom walk in front of it in the hallway in one scene, and I thought it was interesting comparison, like the parents way of life is going extinct. And if you look in the wall of the projectionist's room, theres a panting of a man seducing a woman, with another man (who looks like a solider) in the background. You can see it at 11:05
9:45……you expected a poor, lonely, “stressed to the max because she has to care for her ailing husband AND a farm virtually by herself”, German immigrant to be a pleasant character in the midst of WWI?
My grandfather was born in Danzig in 1889 and the family moved to America in 1890. He would later go on to work as a farm manager in the area they lived, thankfully that's where the similarities end. But still, this movie had an extra fascination to me to get a glimpse of what his life was like. He died when my mom was 4 so she didn't have stories to tell me about him. All I know is what I can find in historical records, what he did for work, and that he was an artist.
"I know what I've done, the terrible things, the terrible awful murderous things" and "I want what they have so bad to be perfect, to be loved to make up for all my time spent sufferin" I felt that on so many different levels (no I didn't kill anyone but you know what I mean)
19:15 I feel like mitsy told pearl that she did get the role to let pearl hear what she wanted, in attempts of making it out of there alive lol knowing what kind of person pearl is, but sadly her kindness was what got her killed
What Pearl goes through with her parents is the polar opposite of what Amber from “Elemental” does, Pearl can’t wait to leave the farm and follow her dreams despite of what her parents think or how they feel about it while Amber is willing to give up on her dreams to make her parents happy because she knows how badly they struggled and the sacrifices they made to give her the good life she has, and while Pearl’s mother couldn’t be less supportive Amber’s father told her he just wanted her to be happy and follow her dreams
Mia Goth already making herself a damn legend alr with the X trilogy and alr becoming a phenomenal scream queen. Decades from now she’s still gonna be an inspiration to many in the genre
I live in Whanganui and saw a lot of the set for pearl as they were setting it up. Whanganui has a lot of very old buildings so most of the buildings stayed almost the same, they just added a few props and new signs. The theatre still has the ticket booth used in the movie and the alleyway by the movie theatre remains almost identical. Both my mum and sister met multiple actors from both movies and my mum even supplied some props for both movies, overall really cool experience
Ti West is such an amazing director both Pearl and X were amazing movies I love how Pearl has so many similarties to Carrie I am really excited to see Maxxxine because Mia Goth is such an incredible actress and very talented I loved that 8 minute speech monologue and the way she held her smile for 5 minutes straight the "I'm a star" is such an Iconic line and I am really happy that these movies were created

LOVE THE PART WHEN PEARL YELLED
"NOOOO PLEASSEEE IMM A STARRR NOOO"
I know your script writing has always been amazing, but the line about the Rockettes at 16:59 is so well done. Love all of the amazing details!!
“If only they would just die.” Genuinely horrifying
19:00 "Ha ha, she's in danger!" gold lol
This film feels like mia woke up and asked: "Imagine wizard of oz but terrifying."
Do you have ADHD, don't you? Lol
?
X and Pearl may be my favorite horror movies of the last 5 years. I'm super excited for MaXXXine.
i lost it at James screaming I'M MARRIED!!!! at the scarecrow
“uh oh, took off a little scalp with that one” in response of pearl brushing her mother’s corpse made me laugh so hard i had to stop the video for a little
13:35 man that table should go on this kill count.
10:10 I KNEW I RECOGNISED THIS!! I live in Whanganui and have my whole life - I've spent many hours in that theatre and the alleys around it. Downtown Whanganui is full of beautiful art deco buildings and I love when they feature in movies.
Mia Goth not getting nominated for an Academy Award for this is absolutely criminal! Horror has transcendent performances too!!!
You can see it at 11:05
0:13 it's WHAT??
what? i dont get it
a sequel to X
These videos just get me so excited for Maxxine
MaXXXine*
FINALLY!!! I'm glad that James is covering Pearl on the Kill Count!!
My Friday ritual: Coffee and kill count
@14:19 'We fade into a 4 x 3 Dream Theater (hold the Portnoy)'...
When I tell you I screamed I probably woke up a suburb in New Zealand.
I noticed that too. Cool shoutout
Pearl’s monologue near the end alone made this movie great 👌
The ending monologue is amazing!
Okay, whoever wrote that, "2020 vision" line, time for a bonus/raise.
9:45……you expected a poor, lonely, “stressed to the max because she has to care for her ailing husband AND a farm virtually by herself”, German immigrant to be a pleasant character in the midst of WWI?
14:18 Amazing band jumpscare! Almost scared me as bad as the movie!
19:50
I don't know why, but "Mitsy is splitsy" got a real good giggle from me. Well done James!
Congrats to James and the kill count crew for being the funniest people
The ending with her smiling is just so incredibly done, Mia Goth deserved an Oscar
I will never get sick of James sponsor bits
Yesssir they’re so entertaining
Just recently found this channel and I can't stop watching.
Welcome and enjoy!
@@DeadMeat hello I know you're covered pearl and I just was going to cover it but my bad I guess so I'm @moredeadmeatcontentfan so enjoy your life
James "IM MARRIED" scream is so hilarious
Oh yea more dead meat. Honestly this channel is more than just a channel for me. It’s fun, relaxing and thrilling. Best horror channel ever
19:15 I feel like mitsy told pearl that she did get the role to let pearl hear what she wanted, in attempts of making it out of there alive lol knowing what kind of person pearl is, but sadly her kindness was what got her killed
“Hold the Portnoy” is the best Dream Theater joke I’ve ever heard. Good one James 😂
I’ve never actually thought of comparing a horror film to an animated kids film, but I can see your point.
Mia Goth already making herself a damn legend alr with the X trilogy and alr becoming a phenomenal scream queen. Decades from now she’s still gonna be an inspiration to many in the genre
17:25 PLEASE EMMA STONNNEEEEE!!!!
So excited for Maxxxine, Ty has made something incredible with X and Pearl
Ti West is such an amazing director both Pearl and X were amazing movies I love how Pearl has so many similarties to Carrie I am really excited to see Maxxxine because Mia Goth is such an incredible actress and very talented I loved that 8 minute speech monologue and the way she held her smile for 5 minutes straight the "I'm a star" is such an Iconic line and I am really happy that these movies were created
Loooooove this movie- it feels like a classic.. and it’s so cool that they had Mia goth write pearls backstory… she is incredible
Fun fact: Crocodiles and Alligators can live up to 70+ years. So there’s a chance that the gator in X is the same one from Pearl.
y'all have given me some great movie suggestions THE HUNT,TOTALLY KILLER AND ANOTHER i can't remember thanks again
I didn't even know David Corenswet was in this until I saw the KC trailer. I'm happy that James mentioned David's upcoming role as Superman.
James you’re a STAR
Pearl is one of the best horror movies I've ever seen, the monologue at the end is absolutely haunting.
How is this man not a billionaire he has had a sponsor for every single kill count since 2022
He may not want to flaunt his wealth.
Because he pays his employees.
@@shiftybea Unlike some jobs 👀
still blows my mind that mia goth wasn’t nominated for an oscar for this movie
