    This movie is the definitive example of how going into a movie knowing almost nothing about it can be hugely beneficial.
    I love how the biggest twist is that Keith wasn't the bad guy. Too chivalrous for his own goid, yes, but he was trying so hard not to make Tess uncomfortable. He's fully aware he is the more threatening party, and is trying to come off as unthreatening as possible. But he's clearly at a loss of how to handle the situation, and it just comes off as awkward. Those first scenes with Keith and Tess were very well-written and acted.

      I felt that this was for sure a man's viewpoint on being a woman and knowing that men are physically stronger and that they know it too. She didn't do any of the things real life women do in case they re murdered, like giving friends her location and calling to have someone to loudly talk to or make sure he knows she's paying for half so he doesn't try to pull a 'you owe me so strip' thing men use. Watching the movie I remeber thinking it was for sure made by men but that twist still got me good! What a weird movie

    I know the horror mother is overused but this film is the one I will not complain about because it makes sense for the plot. Since mother is not actually the main monster and she’s just a victim of inbreeding, isolation, and other traumas. It really helps her have an empathetic depth that other monster naked mothers lack. It’s also crazy that the biggest villain is an old man who un-alives himself and has such a small role in comparison.. I feel like a lot of people put emphasis on mother being the main villain overall but for me the beauty of the movie is how she isn’t a conscious villain

    Was definitely my horror movie of the year in 2022. You could really tell that Zack Cregger was dipping his toes in the water with Barbarian but I’d argue it worked flawlessly, it’s a movie that quietly makes comments about the dynamics of men and women’s differences in the way they approach situations. Like you look back on it and say “Tess should’ve been MORE trusting of Keith” or “That lady in the flashback should’ve been LESS trusting of Frank” but the sad truth is you should always be as cautious possible because you never know who a stranger really is

    • @undeadarmy19
      @undeadarmy19 11 месяцев назад +9

      There is def some truth to that. At the same time, you shouldn't be overtly prejudice towards men simply because some of them are bad.
      Something that everyone seems to miss here is the fact that Keith went out of his way to let her stay there, gave her the bedroom, made her tea/shared his wine with her, etc, all in an effort to make HER feel better, while not focusing on him or what he needs whatsoever.
      I think this is what victim culture has led us to: a society where large portions of certain groups are made to feel demonized and "bad", all because some people have had bad experiences, or have seen others have bad experiences with people that belong to the same group as you. Now you're forced to walk on eggshells because you're afraid of offending them or making them feel uncomfortable.

      @@undeadarmy19Calling it victim culture shows that you've missed the bigger picture of what the original comment meant.

    • @undeadarmy19
      @undeadarmy19 11 месяцев назад +3

      @Nothereorhere How so? That's exactly what it is. Prior to social media, the internet, and the constant doom scrolling that people do nowadays, especially younger generations, women were a lot less worried about these sorts of things.
      This modern victim culture has made it to where people not only view themselves as being more a victim, but they feel more justified when they mistreat people that belong to an "oppressor" group, such as white ppl, males, and straight ppl.
      Notice how she says "men just get to blow through life while leaving messes behind them, but women have to be more careful".
      That mentality right there is the fundamental issue with victim culture, and the content that feeds the confirmation bias of those within the culture.
      Men have objectively more difficult lives. They're more prone to being victims of violence, they work they do is much more dangerous, dirty, and physically demanding, they constantly have things blamed on them/they're demonized on a regular basis, they have much higher rates of homelessness, depression, self-delete, mainly due to the fact that it's much more difficult for men to find a companion, especially one that will pay for them. Men literally even face grape at similar rates as women, especially when you factor in prison crimes.
      Women think they have life more difficult because they deal with *checks list from She-Hulk* catcalling and "mansplaining".
      Social media, the internet, and Hollywood, have brainwashed people into believing that men are these bad victimizers that are constantly looking for any way they can to hurt women. Meanwhile, women are perfect and if they do say or do anything mean or harmful to a man, well, he probably had it coming. Look no further than Cardi B admitting to drugging and robbing men, only to have nothing happen to her, while her fans all justified her actions. But imagine if a male performer admitted to drugging and robbing women. Well, we don't have to wonder, because men get attacked and "cancelled" for even looking at women for too long. Look no further than the thousands of videos online where females put up cameras in the gym and demonize every man that so much as glances at them.

      @@mask938 Keith didnt do anything wrong. As for everything else, is it acceptable for white people to be prejudice towards and afraid of black people then? Seeing as how 83% of interracial violence between white and black people is black-on-white, while only 17% is white-on-black. On top of the fact that less than 10% of the population (black males) commit 36% of all violent crime and 52% of all murder.
      I thought as a society we were supposed to be getting away from these sorts of mentalities where people think its ok to be prejudice towards and demonize an entire group of people simply due to the actions of a few.
      Also, at the end of the day this is just a movie. While some of the interactions are realistic, not all of them are, and def not within such a close time and the same people. Thats one of the issues with many movies nowadays that spend so much time formulating these heavily one-sided depictions of certain groups of people, then trying to make it seem like this is what "group x has to experience all the time".

    I watched this with only seeing the first trailer and was shocked at the plot turns. I really enjoy how they treated the characters. Especially Justin Long. As you start to gain sympathy for him and think the woman possibly lied. Before you’re able to really get on his side that bar scene automatically strips all of it away. Then later in the film, you start to gain sympathy for him again, based off his funniness and actions he takes. Even self reflecting with the homeless man. Once again, just to strip it away when they get to the top of the water tower. It is some good writing. I also really enjoyed the first half and it was just entertaining to see the characters navigate the awkward interactions. It really was surprise knockout film that has its funny moments, gross moments, but also serious moments.

    There seems to be some misunderstanding about why Keith is viewed as threatening/sexist even though he means well and I'll try to explain it at least from my point of view: Say you're at a friend's house and they offer you a glass of water. Normally if you're not thirsty at all, you decline the offer, the friend says "okay", and that'll be the end of it. What Keith does is basically the equivalent of having the friend who offered you water badger you so much about it that you're practically forced to take it even though you already said no many times. It gives off the vibe that you and only you knows what's best for someone in a situation and that everyone around you should do what you say without hearing what someone else says. And Like I said, Keith is not a bad dude at all, but he lacks the social skills to properly read the room and because of that, he comes off as threatening/creepy/etc. Also this kinda applies more on an individual level, but I definitely understand how hurtful it is to have someone make assumptions about you based on who you are especially if you won't do anything bad, but my advice for that is to not take it personally because it's not your job to change someone else's mind about you. The cold hard truth is that there's always gonna be a version of you that will only exist in someone else's head, so if someone doesn't feel safe in your presence even though you're completely harmless, then that's their problem, not yours. All you can do is try to understand where that person is coming from, but at the end of the day only you know who you really are, so just keep living life and not take things personally.

      @@samanthakoller533 Actually, bomb shelters are kind of common depending on the age of the house, and Tess's house would DEFINITELY be the type to have a bomb shelter, being made around the 1940s, according to the flashback to the late 60s. Keith is, sort of, in the right with that. If Tess said there was an extra room in the BOMB SHELTER, that would be panic "GET THE ABSOLUTE FUCK OUT OF THERE" time. Like, the moment Keith saw the staircase down to the weird dungeon, he should have fucking booked it with Tess out of the STATE. If I saw that, you'd be seeing my ass in the dead center of Japan by the next day.
      Edit: Nevermind, forgot the fucking tunnel. Going to evacuate the planet right after discovering THAT, then.

    I know that the ending song choice, 24:14 - Be My Baby by the Ronettes, is obviously in reference to how the Mother treats her captors like Tess, but perhaps it also has a double meaning for the theme of misogyny, considering the relationship between the lead singer of the Ronettes, Ronnie Spector, and her abusive/murderer husband, Phil Spector? Just a thought, as this makes it such a deep and thematic song choice.

    The title of the film is great because of it's ambiguity. You think the mother is the Barbarian at first, but then it becomes clear that AJ and Frank are the true Barbarians. I can relate to your gripe against the city of Detroit being used for a back drop in horror. I feel as if It Follows is the only one that truly uses the area as a back drop, and doesn't necessarily capitalize on the decrepit nature of the city and outlying areas, apart from some key set pieces in the film. I feel like It Follows actually captures different aspects of living in Michigan, with depictions of colleges, lake front areas, and well populated suburbs, along with abandoned areas. But I'm a native Ohioan, so what do I know.

    That scene of Justin Long talking to [the director] in the bar was probably the most gross and disturbing experience I've felt from a movie in a while. And it's a totally different kind of disturbing than what you would normally expect from a film like this. I think one of the strongest directorial choices here was all the stuff he didn't show on screen, but made you feel like had to be in the scene off-camera.
