this movie is literally the definition of one of those iconic wattpad y/n fanfictions. you've got the 4'2" brown hair, blue eyes, messy bun, "guys don't fight this isn't you!" main character and her 8'7" bad boy/delinquent, older than her, drives a motorcycle, probably should go to therapy for anger issues, harry styles-esque love interest. it could not get more cliche
Elle’s mother is the best character. She at least had the good sense to die in the first five minutes so she didn’t have to be in this trash fire of a movie.
Too bad the dad stayed, he is my favourite character y'know, he knew how trash the movie will be but he stayed to watch over his daughter and son And you see he is suffering for it, it really isn't fun and he isn't going to fake it like the others, but he is doing it for his kids, a true inspiration for all men, fathers and humanity in general Hope we see a movie about him
the most concerning part about the kissing booth is that it was based on a wattpad novel most likely written by a 14 year old girl that believed that all these abusive and violent behaviours were something u were supposed to be attracted to/long for, and the novel got so popular in the site that it was picked up by netflix which is even sadder
This movie would've been better if it had turned out that Lee explicitly wanted to keep El from his brother because his brother is an abusive maniac and he was just worried about her, and maybe they could tie in her mom dying to her being reckless and impulsive so at first she's into how *wild* Noah is, and after she's convinced he's bad for her, she throws herself at Lee, but Lee doesn't like her that way and only sees her as a friend, and the movie ends with El going to therapy and Noah, I don't know, dying or going to jail.
Definitely better but I'm not sure about Elle throwing herself at Lee and going to therapy. I think that would make her character quite empty and promote the idea that there's something wrong with someone mentally if they end up in an abusive relationship. That is sometimes true but also it comes down to the manipulation of an abuser. Perhaps the film could have took a dark turn and depict domestic abuse quite graphically but accurately. I'm not certain what would be best in terms of Lee's role but I agree Noah facing the consequences of his actions and Elle learning would be a much better outcome. Dying seems to say that death is an appropriate form of justice rather than reformation or that death from a perpetrator can help a victim move on, which I don't think is a helpful or productive message but prison seems fitting. I suppose the issue is that it's a difficult story to write and unless it is genuinely well done, it wont sell. To accurately but also sensitively depict real world crimes is a very fine line and requires not just excellent writers but also very good actors. No matter how crap this is, I imagine it would do well enough to make some money from an American audience.
@@maks7355 Perhaps. Something about selling therapy as a solution feels off to me but I might be wrong. Therapy does help a lot of people so I’m not sure.
You know within the movie is a kind of compelling story bout this kid, Lee, whose watched his brother grow up with a very violent temper and manipulative tendencies using this list of rules he and his best friend came up with as a joke when they were ten to keep her away from Noah because Lee has no idea how to even explain the extant of his brother's absue/toxic behavior. Not only because he's afraid of loosing his friend but for her physical safety. Basically this movie should have been a psychological horror.
I agree completely, I found the scene at 16:23 really interesting, Lee really seemed like he's seen Noah do some really fucked up shit behind the closed doors and is desperately trying to protect his friend from his own abuser. It would be a really interesting story.
Judging by how it only took an “I’m sorry” written on a piece of paper for Elle to forgive a guy for groping her and agree to a date with him, I think it’s fair to say her taste in guys isn’t very healthy
That's not all he did, Danny didn't include the whole thing. He dressed up in a skirt to embarass himself in front of the class to get Elle to forgive him. It's still NOT a good message that Elle accepted a date from a guy who groped her, but it's more than an I'm Sorry note.
I love how in almost every other movie, a man slamming his hand on the hood or roof of his car as he shouts at a woman to "GET IN THE CAR!" is universally recognized as a massive red flag. Meanwhile, this movie is like "Oooooh, he be so passionate! What a catch!
The brother immediately asking "did you do that to her" when he saw Elle's wound should be the biggest red flag ever, but this movie just subscribes to the the-badder-the-boy-the-better narrative so much and I'm so sick of it Anyway, I appreciate you so much Danny, thank you for this video
THIS!! Like i feel like even Danny overlooked it dude, Noah seems to be mentally ill or just abusive in general, why is no one talking about the fact that his own brother focused more on him than her? He was prob just trying to make sure she was safe
Yeah. If the first thing your family ask when seeing someone theyre close to is injured is "did you do that? " means they just know how prone to violence they are.. Mega red flags
The fact that Lee was 100% convinced that his goblin monster brother fully attacked Elle is deeply concerning. With how rich the Flynn family is, they seem like the kind of people that cover up their insane children that murder women and just pay off enough cops to keep everyone out of jail.
for real it seems to be that his concern is not 'don't date my brother ooh icky' it is 'this dude is physically dangerous and potentially abusive' like that's. that's a p real concern!!
this is a horror movie. its a story about girl dating a possessive and violent guy despite obvious warning signs. the scene where noah yelled at her to get back in the car was TERRIFYING.
I absolutely despise the "He's violent and angry and dangerous but not around me because he loves me and I can tame him" trope because it just fuels the fantasy instead of helping spot abusive traits in a person. This normalizes abusive relationships at an enormous capacity
@@LunasofficialMum I am 15 now growing up I was never really into the idea of crushes and I still don’t get them that much, I’ve liked like two people in my entire life 💁🏽♀️ and I’ve actually been working on my own 3 books
I think it’s really telling lmao, some 15 year old was going through a phase of “I want a bad boy who’s terrible to everyone but me bc I can fix him” and then some weirdo adult man saw that and was like “this is so perfect and there’s nothing wrong with any of the dynamics in this movie”
@@g0ref4iry48or he saw that it was popular with young girls & didn’t care about the message as long as it sold to its target audience (which it did), I highly doubt anyone behind this was super invested lol
Aside from Noah, Lee is also extremely creepy. They could have made his disapproval of Noah dating Elle be about caring about her well-being because he knows his brother is an abusive asshole. But instead it boiled down to "you were the one thing I had that Noah didn't have"; like it's a rivalry game of who gets to own Elle as if she's an object. I really, really, really hate this movie
i dont think lee was creepy, i can see your view but, i feel like the main reason he wanted to keep her away from her brother was because of his brothers godaweful personality. he says stuff like "she doesnt know what shes gotten herself into" which i believe somewhat is code for noah mistreating women he gpes outwith (sorry for bad english)
@@trvhal eh the line "you were the one thing I had that noah didnt" really kills that idea for me, that combined with other weirdly possessive stuff Lee does esp in the sequels suggests some serious jealousy from lees end, if he was really concerned about elles safety he wouldn't even have suggested that elle belonged to him or anything like that
I watched the movie like two years ago and I also forgot how scary Noah is. But I do remember him slamming his hand in the car and me saying “what the fuck?!”
She literally jumps when he does it too. I know the controlling aggressive dude is already a popular trope, but that just felt like such cut and dry abuse, idk how the writers couldn't notice that
The scene where Noah slams his fist on the car and yells at Elle to get in always made me feel sick to my gut. And the fact that the movie just disregarded it and Elle got in the car anyway just to fuck him an hour later was so incredibly concerning to me. In a single scene, this film has taught young girls that if an angry guy who has just been in a physical altercation yells at you to get in his car, you just should, cuz he probably just wants to take you to a romantic secret place and have sex with you. It’s such a dangerous message and I was so disappointed that the opportunity to teach young people how to spot red flags was THERE and they chose to do the exact opposite. And combined with Noah’s behaviour throughout the rest of the movie and the general response to his character from fans, it paints a pretty scary fucking story
the way lee sees elle with a wound near noah and immediately assumes that noah did it to her too “she has no idea what shes getting into with you” this is a horror movie
Fun fact: going near the Hollywood sign is extremely illegal , usually the closest you can ever get to it is if you're above it on the hill, you can absolutely be arrested for being infront of it, sometimes even police officers are there to guard the sign incase anyone tried to go up and vandalize lr loiter near the sign, so if this movie was realistic Elle and Noah would be arrested and the credits would play
The movie implies that Lee doesn't want Elle dating Noah because he's insecure, but if his IMMEDIATE reaction to seeing Elle hurt was that Noah did it... I think there's another reason why
Honestly, as a sibling, you'd know your sibling best. If Noah was that violent as a child, Lee probably had some experience getting beat up by him too. Also, Noah doesnt really hide his violent personality
@@gram7354 Given that Noah didn't really hesitate when it came to trying to attack Lee all over an accusation, I would say Lee probably does indeed have experience getting beat up by him.
Totally. And I guess maybe you're supposed to think Lee is trying to manipulate her into breaking up with Noah due to his insecurity, but even if that is the case the point still stands. We constantly see Noah being aggressive throughout the movie and I wouldn't have been shocked if he hit Elle at some point in a fit of rage (like during the car scene).
Not really when you realize it was probably just because he thought it'd be gross for his brother and best friend to date. They were kids when they made the rules and he didn't act like the rule was made out of concern. He said that he's never talk to her again, you wouldn't say that if you were actually concern about your friend being in a toxic situation. Every character in the movie sucked honestly except elle but she was extremely flat for a main character.
@@nutellacelery8830 Stop acting like not being abre to kiss a single guy who she barely talks to is a horrible task. @@jonzinizin5498 i think it's pretty fucked up to tell someone who they can or cannot have feelings for. like, who the fuck do you think you are? and why is it in your best interest to STOP someone from falling in love or even just having consensual fun? not only do i think it's weird to tell your SIBLINGS who they can't have sex with (why do you care? they're your sibling. please butt out of their sex life), i also think it's very strange to act like you hold ownership over someone else's body even if you've been best friends for life. you do not have ANY right to try and guilt trip and shame someone for what they choose to do, consensually, with THEIR body, in a way that has literally nothing to do with you. unless YOU'RE the one they're trying to have sex with, you are in absolutely no position to say "no" to them. no matter how badly you wanna exert some fucked up form of control over another human being. if a friend of mine told me that they had feelings for my sister i would just stay out of it. because i have no opinion on who my sister dates unless she's in danger. i do not give a fuck who she fucks and i think only the absolute weirdest people on the planet would concern themselves with that. the only way that i would ever insert myself into someone else's sex life is to prevent them from being hurt. i would totally be behind Lee if the reason he was against their relationship was for the sake of Elle's safety due to Noah's anger issues, but that wasn't the case. he literally said that the reason he didn't want them together was because Elle was "his", and not Noah's. he was viewing and describing her as property. and if that behavior is something you support then please re-evaluate your moral code. and if you have siblings please leave them the fuck ALONE.
honestly I would have preferred the annoying trope where she ends up with her best friend because at least he wasn't constantly violent and didnt threaten to break anyones nose if they went on a date with her
There’s a love interest in the second one called Marco who’s actually the best choice in every way and she still chooses Noah:/ (I watched the Elvis the Alien video on the movies)
As an ex-teacher, can confirm that there is no way this would ever fly, especially in a fancy-arse school like theirs! Also, their ties are way too loose for private school 😜
@@salem-01 cool, I'm an Aussie as well, though my experience is mostly private schools 😁 there is no he king way students would be allowed to even get that close to each other!
Making Noah a violent psychopath the main Love interest was such a bad idea. It's far from a Healthy relationship, but they potray it as "He just loves you too much" That's basically textbook emotional abuse, the only thing missing was him ACTUALLY hitting her.
100% agree with Danny's assessment. Noah's character was completely off the rails, violent, and controlling --- qualities that are not okay in any relationship.
Fun fact about the little sister thing, friends you grow up with often have the same connection in your brain as siblings so the fact that he acts like she is a little sister and still wants to get with her in the end means Noah got even more issues than the obvious ones
If that nonsense is true then why do so many people fall in love with their best friends? Even ones from childhood? It happens all the time. You don't always see friends as siblings and even if you do that can still change and there's nothing wrong with that.
@@astralGrenade but clearly he didn't actually mean that. He saw her as a woman he was romantically interested in. Him saying that was just yet another way to cover up his true feelings. Anyone with a brain knows that most men do that.
@@truthseeker9249 I believe they were more referring to how older siblings will often view the close friends of their younger brother/sister as another younger brother or sister. One of the close friends of my younger brother sometimes calls me "big sis" and he is like another little brother to me. I'd never view my brother's friends as potential romantic interests because that is weird as hell. especially since they are younger than me.
This is the only movie where the "she falls for her best friend who was the right choice all along" cliche would've been better. Like at least it's not his abusive brother so sure
So many romance movies glorify and romanticise abuse, but this one stands out to me. You can see how violent Noah is super early on and they just excuse it. Lee automatically assuming that he's abusing Elle is treated like it's ridiculous, but just based on his behavior, it's super valid. Noah is an obvious abuser and yet she gets with him anyway and that's supposed to be a happy ending? Wtf.
I know everyone's already said this, but seriously SUCH a red flag that Lee immediately thinks Noah hurt Elle, and he actually does push her out of the way pretty harshly while trying to get at Lee, and yk instead of having a conversation about the relationship Noah and Lee get into an actual fight. Noah is constantly acting extremely abusive and the movie just ignores that for the most part.
Right, they make it seem like we're supposed to believe he would hurt anyone but her, "oh look he's so protective!" When in reality, a man with a violent streak like Noah's isn't going to be like "oh but this person is off limits." He clearly has serious anger management issues, and a relationship won't just make that go away. Lee didn't just not want El dating his brother because it'd be weird, he didn't want her dating someone so violent and toxic.
Maturing is realizing why lee really made rule number 9- to keep Elle away from Noah because he’s scared me might hurt her (mentally and/or physically) not because he doesn’t like the thought of his brother dating his best friend. I’ve seen lots of stories a lot like this in other comments but I was watching the movie with my 11 year old sister and she wouldn’t stop talking about how much she likes Flynn and how he’s “exactly her type”.
The fact that Lee IMMEDIATELY thought Noah hit Elle was a red flag that I thought she might’ve noticed, considering Noah is violent and scared Elle into coming back to him/stop walking away(slamming his fist on the car hood scene). And her dad not caring that his daughter was dating a much-larger violent dude was a wtf moment for me. Like, you don’t care that she could get her ass beat if they have an argument?? He’s the poster boy of abusive boyfriend.
you’re so right! what gets me is jacob elodie also plays nate jacobs another abusive asshole, i feel as though he’s been type casted as violent abusive boyfriend #1 in all of these media for teenagers. it’s so weird how this is portrayed as love, having your boyfriend verbally intimidate you/ hurt objects around you to intimidate you isn’t romantic. and this narrative thats being pushed is insane.
Yeah, if in the end Elle either got killed or badly abused by Noah and Lee was sad because he saw it coming and tried to warn her. The movie could've actually had a valuable life lesson: look for red flags.
I said this in another Kissing Booth review: Lee immediately thinking that Elle's cut came from his brother hitting her is a terrible sign. That his first thought is that his brother would do that to a girl he has known for most of his life shows how Lee views his brother's violent tendencies. If your bff thinks his own brother is capable of doing (and likely to do) that, take that as an important warning about the guy you are romancing
@TheKitKatLizard Agreed. Not to mention that with how Noah has acted throughout this movie, I don’t find it at all unreasonable that Lee would immediately believe without question that Noah is abusing Elle. Also, in my opinion at least, that should’ve probably shown Elle that dating Noah is an absolutely horrid decision. It’s one thing that outside sources have been giving her the signs to press the eject button on this relationship, but one that specifically came from her bestie since she was a child? Girl, open your fucking eyes. For this entire movie Elle was essentially going, “He is an entire garbage truck of red flags, but good thing I’m wearing my rose tinted glasses”
The way Lee went about it was pretty toxic though. "Hey no dating siblings!" How about you just outright tell her "My brother has anger issues and I strongly advise you don't date him. I'd be concerned for your safety
I get the "I see you as a little sister thing" and having them kiss later was supposed to be a 'showing not telling' thing where he SAYS how he feels but actually reveals his true feelings later, but I'll be damed if it isn't gross as hell. He could have said: "You're my little brother's best friend, I kind of feel this obligation to protect you." Which would display the fact that he apparently doesn't view their relationship as close and only by association with his brother and they could do the whole showing not telling thing later as they kiss, WITHOUT that weird little sister stuff
The fact that Lee actually expected Noah to be abusing Elle says a lot about Noah’s character. He’s obviously done some terrible crap to make his own brother expect him to abuse his long-time friend.
The way he immediately jumped to that conclusion was really a shocker for me just because normally you don't blame your family members unless they did something really shitty to you. Lee also grew up with Noah so he knows his habits and his limits so it just makes me wonder if Noah really did something to Lee :(
You know it’s serious that when, without any evidence, your own brother immediately thinks you abused his life long friend. It’s seriously fucked up how some girls think that he’s still hot even after all the clear red flags
Another thing that really bothers me about this movie is that Noah is super controlling over Elle dating other men and tells them not to date her, but he’s seen kissing other girls at their school. I really hate the trope of the possessive bad boy with anger issues who attacks any guy within a six mile radius of the main character because he’s “secretly in love” with her but he’s somehow entitled to hook up with other women. It’s so stupid and a huuuuge red flag.
@@LuvFearlessly Makes Heather's a breath of fresh air, and that story is from the damn 80's. The violent, dangerous bad boy loner turns out to be *gasp* a violent and dangerous romantic partner!
I watched this movie when it first came out. I was still young then and I'm ashamed to say that I liked it and was obsessed with it for so long. How could I have been so blind? I even liked the 2nd movie when it came out. Mostly because of Marco but I now hate him too. Anyway by the time I became an adult, I had watched a whole bunch of reactions on RUclips just like this one completely slandering this movie and that's how I came to finally understand. This movie is terrible and sends so many bad messages to young girls. Messages that I took to heart, still being the young girl that I was and I ran with them. I had already experienced abusive relationships before I saw this movie but this movie didn't exactly help me with learning my lesson about trusting and dating the wrong men. I think it made it worse. Cause again this movie reinforced in my little mind that this stuff was normal. By the time the 3rd one came out not too long ago I was an adult and had finally learned my lesson. My boyfriend is not into romance movies like I am so he never saw any of the Kissing Booths. He never even heard of them despite having Netflix until I told him. I didn't give him any details and watched the first one with him to make him see. Immediately he thought the same as everyone else. Cringey, cliche and bad messages for young girls about relationships AND friendships. Then I made him suffer through the 2nd one with me that was a sh*tshow. Rachel was the best part of it even though she was stupid for being with someone like Lee. Then we both suffered through the 3rd one together when it first came out and we did it out of sheer curiosity. "How could they possibly make this story any worse?" Uggggggggggggh. Honestly he and I are kind of on the fence about whether or not we should let our children watch these movies, especially our daughters. I definitely intend to warn my children about this movie and tell them to not think that any of what is going on in the movie is a good thing. Hopefully they listen to me. And honestly hopefully we can all watch together so we can talk afterwards.
Why is no one talking about the Abe Lincoln joke Danny made about how "he hasn't had good luck with booths in the past"? That joke was singlehandedly better than the entirety of the Kissing Booth trilogy.
14:57 i know danny’s just joking, but this is a common thing abusive people do. they’ll hurt you and then “take care of you” to make you think they still love you
Yeah, it’s basically a tween Wattpad fantasy which is fine if it stays a fantasy, but it’s really disturbing when it’s presented like a cute love story
If I had a nickel for every time Jacob Elordi played the role of the psychotic, violent, and abusive boyfriend of one of the main characters in a show or movie, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice
Love that Elle’s two romantic interests in this movie are A. The guy who sexually assaulted her on the first day of school and then victim-blamed her or B. The guy with crazy anger issues, manipulative tendencies and a controlling nature Wow! Tons of dreamy guys at her school! 😍
@@newjeansslayy because its not a funny joke, and trying to defend your joke after people call it out for being weird? idk, maybe dont make jokes ab stuff like this?
This could’ve genuinely been a fantastic movie, they set up all the groundwork for Noah to go full psychopath, kill someone, then kidnap Elle as a twist horror movie off of some basic teen romance movie with hints at his psyche beforehand, all to show the dangers of violent and unstable men. It’s like they had the setup for meaningful parody and then didn’t capitalize on it
It's horrible too how Noah's anger is treated as completely normal and romantic. The fact that Lee saw a cut on her face, IMMEDIATELY assumed Noah had done it, and that was a COMPLETELY BELIEVABLE assumption from what we'd seen of Noah implies that maybe he wanted to keep her away from Noah because he genuinely believed Noah could/would be physically violent towards his partner. I know these movies don't go deep, but it just feels so irresponsible to release this to teens as a romance when it reads more like a slow burn horror movie with Elle as a future victim.
this !!! I remember my (much younger) cousin made me watch this with her and she wouldn't stop rambling about how dreamy Noah is and how he was her ideal man... It clearly wasn't just about looks either so I got worried, I tried to explain to her the clear red flags she shouldn't ignore in real life but man, it kind of scared me ngl. Writers should be A LOT more careful with violent characters in movies made for kids and teens. Not saying there shouldn't be any violence, but we should be aware of the way they're presented / viewed / how they're redeemed etc.
THANK YOU!! As a victim of DV I was literally watching this thinking "If someone told me he'd been violent to his partner before, I'd believe that" Yet it's so fucking romanticized in this movie to be this "he's just a bad boy who needs someone to help him".
honestly that would be such a better movie Lee trying to protect his firend from abuse he's suffered through for years and Elle falling for him due to media as terrible as this being what raised her though I'm looking far too into it
That scene should have been a moment where the story turned real and we addressed the fact that Noah is a toxic horrible person and El does have a reason to be afraid of him but then it just…didn’t go anywhere. SO CLOSE to self awareness from the movie
It so is!! It’s dark, she’s mostly alone, she’s already been harassed and now this guy who’s already known to be aggressive is following her. I think I’d shit myself. It’s not fucking romantic, its abusive and manipulative.
i know, that's so terrifying especially considering the type of man noah is. honestly the only realistic reason i can see anyone in this situation actually getting in the car is fearing their own safety if they didn't. which is completely disregarding that he also could have been telling her to get in the car to beat the shit out of her, or something even worse. honestly this entire movie was a mistake and i'm sick of producers using movies to essentially promote abuse towards children and teens.
@@cl0wn.k0dx that is panic attack material right there oh god. I cry if people raise their voice at me and seem upset, if that happened I would probably shut down
This movie reads like a story about a touch-starved teenage girl who doesn’t have a positive female figure in her life to help her understand how to live life as a woman, and a pair of abusive codependent brothers who can’t adjust to life outside of their home because their absent parents essentially forced them to care for and punish eachother to compensate for the lack of ANY adult role models in their lives. Noah is an abuser, but he’s also a victim. Lee is a victim, but he’s also an abuser. Elle is just a victim who’s being forced to *believe* she’s an abuser.
You said it all perfectly except with Elle. She is not an abuser but she is not innocent. Remember, she cheated on Noah. And she did because she THOUGHT he was cheating on her. And instead of trusting him or trying to work through her feelings through the conflict with Noah, she pushed him away and then started an emotional affair with another guy which culminated in her kissing him. In front of thousands of people. And the whole internet. Then she proceeded to continue spending time with the guy she cheated on Noah with, leading him on in the process while also disrespecting her relationship with Noah by letting him seduce her as well as provoke Noah. Never thought I'd say this but Noah changed for the better as the movies went on. Elle demanded 2 important things of him when they got together. No more fighting and no more telling her what to do. And he complied. Aside from the scuffle with Lee at the end of 1st movie he never fought anyone again, not even the guy who kissed Elle and then actively tried to steal her from him. And he stopped controlling her life, the only thing he ever asked of her was to not let Marco back into their lives. While Elle cheated on Noah and then still continued an emotional affair with the same guy and allowed him to sabotage their relationship, blaming Noah for all of that, all while prioritizing a friendship with a guy who definitely just wants to control her. Noah got better, Elle got worse and Lee just stayed the same selfish, whiny brat he was in the beginning.
Jacob elordi (the love interest) legit got so lucky with euphoria tho. If he wasn’t given the chance to play that intense character everyone would forever see him as the kissing booth actor. So props to him for breaking free from the “Netflix orginal acting.” Stereotype.
@Wynn the difference is, euphoria actively paints him as an abuser. you know he’s an abuser. they don’t romanticize him being an abuser. you are SUPPOSED to hate nate jacobs, not fawn over him as a love interest.
Elle’s dad needs his own spinoff movie. It turns out, Elle’s mom got ill from being a test subject for an illegal experiment, and the dad has to track down all the Umbrella Corporation scientists that were involved.
That is a way better sounding conflict that this cliche hole that we got Like maybe the dad is rlly pressured, his daughter isnt doing the best and she has problems of her own and he needs to comfort and help her (hmmm, problems like an abusive and unhealthy relationship?) And all the while the people who tested her are trying to block him from the truth in anyway they can
Knowing that this movie is based on a Wattpad story is genuinely so on the nose😭There is something to be said about our early exposure to thinking toxicity is cute because of that content as kids
@@briaweea02 and after is supposed to be a fanfiction of Harry styles 💀, I can't- , like I can’t, "being aggressive, possessive, and violent asf is hot "
It's insane that a character who slams their fist on a car and screams "GET IN THE CAR ELLE" to a girl trying to walk away from a violent situation is treated as the love interest and not a violent psychopath. Man's got anger issues and is violent and it's treated as a plus.
I know it's been said, but jesus Noah is the biggest red flag I've ever seen. He isolates Elle from other romantic options, orders her around, shouts at her, calls her "kiddo", says that she's like a little sister and his own brother immediately thinks that he hurt Elle. Clearly if his own brother doesn't trust him, why should the audience, why should Elle??? It's wild that this script was read my multiple people who all thought it was fine to show an abuser as a "hot dreamy man who just loves you"
elle choosing to go on a date with a man who made her humiliated and uncomfortable by sexually assaulting her in public is by far one of my least favorite parts of this movie. he literally had no redeemable qualities and it’s so unrealistic
It could be explained as her being misguided or manipulated. I can understand that. But Lee encouraging her to go on said date?! I thought he was her best friend?
Dude, the trope of violent guy and the girl who calms him down was always kinda off with me. It seems to romanise abusive relationships. Like, in regular abusive relationships, victims don’t think of themselves as victims, but as good people helping out a troubled individual aka their abuser. They think themselves as the only ones who can help their abuser and become trapped in their relationship. The victim can’t leave easily because the abuser would threaten their own life or the lives of others if the victim leaves. The victim thinks they still have power because they can calm the abuser down, but really they’re just following the cycle of abuse. Get abused -> Get apology -> Forgive them -> repeat The trope kinda romanize this concept, but ignoring the abuse part.
Noah Flynn literally did the "GET IN THE CAR" yell which is a narrative shorthand to show an abusive boyfriend or spouse. And Elle proceeds to... Sleep with him!?
I've been struggling with depression lately, and OH MY GOD i found your channel today and i don't think I've genuinely laughed this much in years!!! you literally made my day!❤️❤️
This genuinely actually scares me because when the movie came out all the girls in my class absolutely loved it (I never watched it because I don't really like teen romance movies) and we were all quite young at the time 11 or so and it just scares me so much that they could have internalised all these horrible ideals because that'd be absolutely detrimental for any of their future relationships
I have a friend who loves those kind of toxic-ish movies... I'm worried about her but she at least recognizes toxic relationships when she sees one... I just hope she doesn’t get into one herself
Fun fact: the kissing booth was actually a wattpad story made by a 15 year old. Netflix thought it was going to be the next big thing so they used it as a loose script for the movie
@@dan-ch8kr yeah wattpad promoted it on their website for a while if i recall correctly idk if they still do i haven't touched that site in years (the site feels like a big public playground that's flooded with 3 year olds)
it's funny how while all this teenage drama is happening Elle's dad is the protagonist of a separate movie with guns, drugs, explosions, and corrupt rich men. Like when Noah went to him for advice, dude looked like he just got back from a meet up near a lake that went wrong and resulted in (at least) two men dead.
Coming from a sexual abuse victim, it's super gross that they treat her being groped as a cutesy minor little thing. That sort of thing is very traumatic and the fact that she immediately forgave him and even almost got with him says a lot about the movie.
Literally this whole movie triggers my SA ptsd I watched it with my friends as a 16 year old and felt widely uncomfortable and sad bc they had this girl act this shit out like how harmful to her and also it's so gross anyone took his role. He is a bad character and it was obviously written by someone with a childish mindset on sexual interactions and the reality of consent and how ptsd works.
For real, I had been in 2 really bad ones (physically, sexually, emotionally, mentally) it was hell,… this whole movie and everything doesn’t sit right with me.
@Ava-nx2jy first of all , I'm sorry for everything you went through and I hope things got better for you :) 💕💕💕💕 And your emotions about this movie are valid , as someone who didn't go through any kind of abuse but I know many family members in toxic/abusive relationships , I can say that their relationship is not stable and even if a person who didn't go through any forme of abuse will know this relationship is toxic Btw this movie was originally a wattpad story written by a 15 year old girl , so I guess it makes sence why it isn't great but the fact that grown adults choose to make this a movie is dumb
I thought the exact same thing, and also the whole film is around her falling in love with a really violent guy who shouts at her to "get in the car" really aggressively. This movie is so weird, and it just triggers me so much.
The abuse side with Lee jumping to conclusions actually never stood out to me, which is kind of terrifying. Him immediately assuming Noah hurt her, then threatened her to cover it up, then saying that "she doesn't know what she's getting into with you" along with Noah just slamming the car and ordering her around is awful, I wonder now how many girls Lee has snuck out of the house to avoid Noah's wrath.

Noah is abusive. And another thing that looks like a lot of people just skim over or forget is the fact that Noah slut shames Elle RIGHT AFTER going to the principal's office for defending her from assault. It's disgusting and the fact that people tend to forget that is troubling.
It's interesting to see that Noah is very similar to Nate Jacob from Euphoria (played by the same actor), but in the context of Kissing Both he is considered romantic, while in Euphoria we know that he is falsely romantic and that in reality he is toxic. It's dangerous to value characters like that, like Hardin Scott or Christian Grey, who play the card of tortured guys who just need love when in reality they need therapy. Because it sends a very dangerous message (not just for young people). It's not okay to be abusive, in any situation, even if it's for love
Intellectually I 100% agree with you. BUT there's just something about sad boys tho 😍😍I feel like most girls are really into guys that have this tough bad a** exterior with everyone else but are soft sad boys with their girl only. Ugh I can't help it sad boys are so attractive it just does something to me 🤣🤣 completely overrides any and all common sense.
@@WhitneyDahlin there’s a difference between having depression/being sad and being abusive. also weird as fuck that you romanticize depressed men as well.
@Whitney Dahlin I think what you mean is opening up, showing vulnerability. Although, sad boy is not an aesthetic. I feel that it becomes an aesthetic when they make being sad their entire personality, which sounds really obnoxious to me. But I do like it when people feel they can be vulnerable around me. It shows they trust me.
The fact that Lee warns elle saying, "you can't date my brother" and then when he catches them the first thing he assumes is that she's being abused is not a great thing to show in a movie where Elle eventually gets together with Noah? Like, this is a blueprint for teenage girls to find abusive behavior romantic. Yikes, Scoob. edit: I understand it was based on a story by a very young writer, but the production team and editors are there for those things. I also understand this movie is important to a lot of people. It just feels like confusing romance and controlling, aggressive relationships is far too common in media aimed at young people.
I don't think so. I think Lee is worried about his brother's violent behaviour but I don't think he think that he abuses his girlfriend. The whole "You can't date my brother" thing was probably because he thought the concept would be gross, he never seems like he's actually concerned that Elle would be hurt. He doesn't try to warn her or anything and says he'll never talk to her again if she hooks up with him. That's not how you react if you're worried your friend is gonna be abused. The assumption thing is concerning but considering Noah has been violent throughout the movie and even to Lee, it's not that far fetched to think that he was just worried because Noah is just a typically violent person.
Like actually dude it's fuckin abysmal the message they're implying here, they literally imply that Noah is a manipulative abuser and that's why Lee is shielding ell from him

11:05 I'm sorry but her "running home" while barely recreating the minimum animation and speed for light jogging is the funniest scene in this movie, like girl, WHY ARE YOU SO SLOW, WHY AREN'T YOU JUST WALKING INSTEAD
In one of the sequels I remember there's a point where Elle's aunt sits her down and goes "which college do you wanna go to" and Elle is like "well Noah is going to Harvard and Lee is going to this other college" and her aunt is like "No like, Elle, what do YOU want to pursue as a profession/passion and what do YOU want to do with your life and what college do YOU wanna go to wtf" like the way Elle's life is controlled by men and she just does what makes other men happy is just-- bro
This also sort of gives off the message that Elle has literally no plans for her future if it’s not revolved around the opinion of a boy. Girl doesn’t even consider what she wants to major in if she gets into either of the colleges Noah and Lee are going to, she just wants to go because they’re going. Girl, grow some damn self respect. There is no higher indication of horrific failure than pursuing something for somebody else’s benefit, especially for somebody like Noah.
I remember that and it was like she just wanted to please Noah and Lee, but she couldn’t do that since they were both in different places. I’m glad she went to USC for gaming and no one told her to do that, she went for herself and that’s some growth.
@@jendowden I feel like it was the writers realising how harmful the messages of the movies could be to a younger audience (i.e. middleschool/highschool girls) and then they tried to reel it back in last minute
Normally I'd try to make an argument about it being specifically about men (because love interests/friendships are powerful regardless of the sex), but I find it hard to justify this time given how she literally tried to date the groper dude 💀
In the second movie it was literally so dumb that just like in the first movie Lee decided to ice her out again because she broke another rule and thought about going to school where her boyfriend is instead of with him it’s like dude her college choice is not up to you she is not a possession and you can’t force her into things if she wants to go to Boston let her and if she wants to go with you let her it’s not your choice
That scene where he punched the car and yelled at her to get in, and she flinched... THIS is what teenagers are supposed to believe is sexy? It's not sexy to be scared by your partner. Who tf wrote this screenplay. Someone should tell them that sometimes, what works as a fantasy to help you climax is actually a shtty idea for a scene in a romcom.
@@gram7354 wait did they follow everything in the novel or did they made some changes? Depending on the answer this would say a lot about their writing.
I feel like we aren't mentioning enough the fact that Noah threatened and blackmailed all of the guys at their high school into never asking L out or even showing interest in her. he actively isolates her from every other possible romantic option from the very beginning, and that's supposed to be cute somehow
The biggest yikes for me is when Elle got hurt from the garage and Lee’s first thought was that Noah did it. Like fully implying Noah is an abuser and maybe even hurt his brother or other girls in the past.
My personal theory is that while the main story was happening the dad found out the moms death was a murder so he has this gritty crime plot where he tries to find the culprit
The get in the car scene was *terrifying*. If my daughter thought of that as an acceptable behaviour from a partner, I would've known I failed as a parent. Teen romance movies, the hell are you trying to teach young people here??
@@Jesusbloodissufficient9434 Nah, Lee is as posesive as Noah, if you watch the movie you'll find out that the sole reason why Lee didn't want Elle to date his brother was because according to him he loses everything to his brother and he only had Elle left. So basically Elle can't make her own decisions because he's too insecure. And at least in the sequel Noah changes his violent ways and actually kinda puts more effort in the relationship than Elle does, Lee doesn't have any character development and still wants to be around Elle all the time.
@@showtime1235 He did, the rule about dating is ok due to the circumstances, but he has other rules that he uses to gaslight Elle in other movies. Like that one rule about studying in the same university, when Elle didn't follow it, he trew a tantrum and tried to make her feel guilty. Even with the rule about Noah, if he was really that worried about her safety, he wouldn't act like a crybaby and make her feel guilty, but rather talk with her or something.
"No boobs are worth a broken nose." "My boobs are fantastic. In fact, some might even say they're breathtaking!" Easily the cringiest dialogue from the entire trilogy. The writers must think that humans actually talk like this! 🤦🏽♀️🙄
This reminded me SO much of all the stories I would read as a teen on wattpad. This screamed "And my mom sold me to the alpha king of wolf kingdom" male love interested to me. Low and behold this was originally a wattpad story. For those who don't know, yes absolutely all these things are red flags. However there was a section of wattpad filled with teen girls drooling over fictional men who would treat you like this. I was apart of that section of wattpad. As a teen I didn't register these things are red flags, I had been conditioned into thinking it was hot. I and I am sure many others have grown up, moved on, and become PAINFULLY aware of how dump and naïve they once were.
wattpad is ruining their own reputation at this point. I've been on the app for four years now and I've always avoided the "big name" books like the plague. But one time I got curious and read a random popular book I could find and it was literally like a ten-year-old had written it. And everyone was praising it! Like?? I just don't understand. Why put THAT on your front page? There *are* some genuinely good writers on there, but they're overlooked.
Yep, was the same. I loved that shit as a tween. My relationship with my partner is nothing like that thank god, but it's weird that I thought that kind of relationship is normal. Any behavior like that should have a safe word.
@@bumbabees FR. I’ve read some really good books on there, but I only found them because I was reading on another site (tapas) first. You weren't dumb in the slightest IMO, you were a developing brain that was encultured around a culture with some issues, that happens to all kinds of bright people : ). Your brain learns from its environment, you can't help that really. I'm glad your idea of a healthy relationship is has evolved as you got older, and hopefully you can use your experiences there to help the young people learn how they can be respectful parners with good boundaries and empathy
it makes me go insane that teen romance movies about abusive relationships like this are really popular and mess up young girls' perceptions on love like... noah is scary as fuck!!! he shouldn't be a love interest!
"Scary as fuck" clearly becomes "hot as fuck" when the guy is over 6ft. I mean, if an ugly and/or short guy was scaring off every guy that was interested in her, this would be a psychological thriller, but since it's a super tall hot guy, it's a romantic comedy. Just like in real life
I would’ve just passed this off as just another hilariously stupid Netflix movie, but what they did with Noah and his character in this movie was just so dangerously irresponsible. Now having a violent and manipulative character like Noah isn’t always an awful thing in tv shows/movies, but it’s the way that that type of behavior is portrayed that really matters. Having behavior like that be seen as normal or romantic is horribly wrong and dangerous, especially to the age range of people that this movie is made for.
Netflix seems to have some issues with choosing quality content. They seem to just put anything on. There are more bad choices than good ones and it's a chaotic mess trying to find what to watch. No wonder they are losing customers. They don't care about the quality of programming. What a mess. I might switch to Disney+, don't want to, but they have National Geographic documentaries that look good.

the most concerning part about the kissing booth is that it was based on a wattpad novel most likely written by a 14 year old girl that believed that all these abusive and violent behaviours were something u were supposed to be attracted to/long for, and the novel got so popular in the site that it was picked up by netflix which is even sadder

We should put you in charge of writing movies
I love how when it comes to what happens to Noah at the end, the only character development he deserves is death or imprisonment.
@@jaymercer4692 I didn't think Elle would be in therapy because she got into an abusive relationship but because she needed to heal from it

It kinda makes his "dont date my brother" rule seem way more reasonable if his brother is just this super violent asshole tbh
Yeah, like while the friend is kind of crappy...it's easy to interpret as his brother being SUPER dangerous and that's why he tried that rule.
The fact that Lee was 100% convinced that his goblin monster brother fully attacked Elle is deeply concerning. With how rich the Flynn family is, they seem like the kind of people that cover up their insane children that murder women and just pay off enough cops to keep everyone out of jail.

It’s such a dangerous message and I was so disappointed that the opportunity to teach young people how to spot red flags was THERE and they chose to do the exact opposite. if a friend of mine told me that they had feelings for my sister i would just stay out of it. because i have no opinion on who my sister dates unless she's in danger. i do not give a fuck who she fucks and i think only the absolute weirdest people on the planet would concern themselves with that. the only way that i would ever insert myself into someone else's sex life is to prevent them from being hurt.
i would totally be behind Lee if the reason he was against their relationship was for the sake of Elle's safety due to Noah's anger issues, but that wasn't the case. he literally said that the reason he didn't want them together was because Elle was "his", and not Noah's. he was viewing and describing her as property. and if that behavior is something you support then please re-evaluate your moral code. and if you have siblings please leave them the fuck ALONE.

Fun fact about the little sister thing, friends you grow up with often have the same connection in your brain as siblings so the fact that he acts like she is a little sister and still wants to get with her in the end means Noah got even more issues than the obvious ones
omg i didn't even think about that
If that nonsense is true then why do so many people fall in love with their best friends? Even ones from childhood? It happens all the time. You don't always see friends as siblings and even if you do that can still change and there's nothing wrong with that.
@@truthseeker9249 they said often, and you missed the part where noah literally compared elle to a little sister

Wtf.
@Wynn You dont need to consor abuser. it doesnt matter.
@Wynn At least they don’t really glamorize the abuse in Euphoria.
its honestly a little concerning that lee autimatically assumes that noah hit elle. it just shows how violent noah can get
Maybe that’s why he didn’t want el to date Noah because he didn’t want her getting hurt, which would’ve made more sense
@@corkythehippoman its becuase a lot of social media apps tend to delete comments that contain words like 'porn', 'abuser', 'suicide' etc
It's kind of irritating that they try to portray Lee as a "antagonist" for the whole movie who is trying to separate two "lovers"
and ofc the "GET IN THE CAR" scene...
@@dhampir_days THAT exact scene did NOT sit well with me at ALL 😭😭

Maturing is realizing why lee really made rule number 9- to keep Elle away from Noah because he’s scared me might hurt her (mentally and/or physically) not because he doesn’t like the thought of his brother dating his best friend. I’ve seen lots of stories a lot like this in other comments but I was watching the movie with my 11 year old sister and she wouldn’t stop talking about how much she likes Flynn and how he’s “exactly her type”.
omg talk some sense into her
The fact that Lee IMMEDIATELY thought Noah hit Elle was a red flag that I thought she might’ve noticed, considering Noah is violent and scared Elle into coming back to him/stop walking away(slamming his fist on the car hood scene). And her dad not caring that his daughter was dating a much-larger violent dude was a wtf moment for me. Like, you don’t care that she could get her ass beat if they have an argument?? They made this movie ages ago with Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon, I think.
I said this in another Kissing Booth review:
Lee immediately thinking that Elle's cut came from his brother hitting her is a terrible sign. That his first thought is that his brother would do that to a girl he has known for most of his life shows how Lee views his brother's violent tendencies. If your bff thinks his own brother is capable of doing (and likely to do) that, take that as an important warning about the guy you are romancing
@TheKitKatLizard
Agreed.
No
Especially when he’s so worried about her dating Noah.
@TheKitKatLizard I don’t think he’s 4 years younger, but he is way smaller than Noah. Other than that you’re totally right.
He could have said: "You're my little brother's best friend, I kind of feel this obligation to protect you." Which would display the fact that he apparently doesn't view their relationship as close and only by association with his brother and they could do the whole showing not telling thing later as they kiss, WITHOUT that weird little sister stuff
exactlyyy like they never had to introduce the little sister line of thought in the first place
Aaaaah, I seeee, so that's why he put there this weird rule No.9 🤔😣
no wonder he didn't want her dating him
Honestly true
Another thing that really bothers me about this movie is that Noah is super controlling over Elle dating other men and tells them not to date her, but he’s seen kissing other girls at their school. I really hate the trope of the possessive bad boy with anger issues who attacks any guy within a six mile radius of the main character because he’s “secretly in love” with her but he’s somehow entitled to hook up with other women. It’s so stupid and a huuuuge red flag.
I feel like this trope has been SO common in teen content over the last 20 years. Always the “damaged,” “bad” boy 🙄

It’s like they had the setup for meaningful parody and then didn’t capitalize on it
I would watch that
It's horrible too how Noah's anger is treated as completely normal and romantic.

Now that we look at it that way the rule 9 does makes sense now

This movie reads like a story about a touch-starved teenage girl who doesn’t have a positive female figure in her life to help her understand how to live life as a woman, and a pair of abusive codependent brothers who can’t adjust to life outside of their home because their absent parents essentially forced them to care for and punish eachother to compensate for the lack of ANY adult role models in their lives.
Noah is an abuser, but he’s also a victim.
Lee is a victim, but he’s also an abuser.
Elle is just a victim who’s being forced to *believe* she’s an abuser.
such a great way to sum it up
If Elle whole arc was like that, it would definitely a lot better
if someone took this exact premise and portrayed it for what it is and with the gravity it deserves, it would make for a killer drama/thriller movie

Get abused -> Get apology -> Forgive them -> repeat
The trope kinda romanize this concept, but ignoring the abuse part.

I'm actually concerned about the girls who liked this movie when it came out or even the boys who identify with noah
I have a friend who loves those kind of toxic-ish movies... I'm worried about her but she at least recognizes toxic relationships when she sees one... I just hope she doesn’t get into one herself
Omg i was like 18 when this was released
Ok I looked the release date up and we were 10 aparently so oops close enough
@@greatape8019 Unfortunately, you can see other toxic relationships but it’s very hard to see that you’re in one. So anything can happen.

17:00 If you focused on the dad for the whole movie, it'd be a movie about him figuring out the supernatural forces at hand behind his wife's death.
it's funny how while all this teenage drama is happening Elle's dad is the protagonist of a separate movie with guns, drugs, explosions, and corrupt rich men. Like when Noah went to him for advice, dude looked like he just got back from a meet up near a lake that went wrong and resulted in (at least) two men dead.
I’d rather watch that tbh

And they made more than one movie off this shit wtf🫥
For real, I had been in 2 really bad ones (physically, sexually, emotionally, mentally) it was hell,… this whole movie and everything doesn’t sit right with me.
@Ava-nx2jy first of all , I'm sorry for everything you went through and I hope things got better for you :) 💕💕💕💕
And your emotions about this movie are valid , as someone who didn't go through any kind of abuse but I know many family members in toxic/abusive relationships , I can say that their relationship is not stable and even if a person who didn't go through any forme of abuse will know this relationship is toxic
Btw this movie was originally a wattpad story written by a 15 year old girl , so I guess it makes sence why it isn't great but the fact that grown adults choose to make this a movie is dumb

Then saying “she doesn’t know what she’s getting into with Noah.” Along with Noah slamming the car roof and ordering her around is horrible. I wonder how many women lee has snuck out to avoid Noah’s wrath.
Noah is abusive. And another thing that looks like a lot of people just skim over or forget is the fact that Noah slut shames Elle RIGHT AFTER going to the principal's office for defending her from assault. It's disgusting and the fact that people tend to forget that is troubling.
"aaaAAAAHHH SHE SAID NO. Leave her alone."
Lmao top 5 Danny moment
@@WhitneyDahlin Are you a bot?
@@WhitneyDahlin there’s a difference between having depression/being sad and being abusive. also weird as fuck that you romanticize depressed men as well.
@@chlomentine wtf I'm not romanticizing depression sad boy is an aesthetic/lifestyle thing.

She runs like a sim
Not to mention her choosing to “run home” in her cute day outfit, which literally no one has ever done when they could just as well walk.
Right it’s giving episode character run😭
Considering how Noah acts, I think that Elle’s dad acting like a grizzled crime detective is just him preparing for the inevitable.
Probably hahaha
That’s dark

Bro imagine if there was a Black Mirror episode about how movies like this one romanticise abusive relationships.
That scene where he punched the car and yelled at her to get in, and she flinched... THIS is what teenagers are supposed to believe is sexy? It's not sexy to be scared by your partner.

We get movies like this because the men who act like that are the ones doing the writing.
