Farmhouse Dining Table design by: Ana White, but with a removable top (Z clips and wood inserts)

- Hey Everyone!
Welcome back to my channel! As most of you know, I have been talking about building a table for my dining room. I wanted to do this right and keep it as simple as possible,, so I went online and found plans from Ana-white.com (link below) The design was definitely what I was looking for in a table. Simple, rustic and "easy" to make.
In this video, I show you how I built this table and the changes I made along the way. Ana Whites plans are great, but I wanted to be able to remove the top of the table if we ever moved again. So I reached out to one of my wood working friends, Matt @mmcc_woodshop6288 and he was able to give me some tips on how to accomplish this task. I highly recommend that if you want to see a real wood worker, go over to Matt's channel and check out all of his awesome builds.
Things not mentioned in the instructions:
With any wood you get from a box store, you are going to have to do some prep work. You will encounter issues with your wood that is not shown or talked about in the instructions. If you are anything like me, you do not have a large, flat, leveled surface to work on. Or have an extra pair of hands. Clamps are your friends. use them. and even though you are going to glue and use pocket hole screws for this table top. I highly recommend that you make sure all of your wood is flush and the joints are secured. So do your glue up. Clamp your project and allow to dry before you secure it with screws. You want to make sure your boards will sit flush with the next board. Having a planer and a joiner is HIGHLY recommended. You can't buy wood off the shelf and build this. These are things not mentioned in the instructions. You will have to make adjustments as you go. Cutting off excess wood to make everything even. If you do not have access to untreated 4x4s, you are going to have to make your own like I did. I also highly recommend that you look up this process on whatever video platform you are using. I have never done this before and even though it worked, I want to make sure you do it the right way. not my way. Lastly, dowels. USE THEM! They make a real difference and looks SOOO much better than just seeing screws.

Very nice! After taking a class on dove tails I learned I don't like to chisel very much. I'm going to try the coping saw on my next notches like that.

Looks very nice. No issues with wood movement/cracking for the breadboard ends? I know alot of "experts" dislike pocket hole joinery especially for breadboard ends. It makes it so much easier though.
Thank you! And, thank you for watching! At first, I didn't notice any movement on the ends, but when we got ready for the next event in there I noticed shrinking. But from the middle. So now the end boards are a tab bit longer than the center. I don't like it, but no way of fixing it. So I'm learning to "love" it. I keep telling myself, it's my first table and it gives it character LOL!
Can someone explain in simple terms what this means please?

Oh okay., happy to help. Because of the humidity in my house, the wood expanded and contacted through the years and has made the inner boards smaller than when I started, which made the end boards seem longer. I'm not sure how to prevent that from happening, unfortunately. I guess the only thing I can say is to make sure the wood you use is fully cured, no moisture in the wood. You probably can find something on YT about wood warping after awhile, that should help. I hope that helped a little. My pocket hole jig is from WEN. I use to have an off name brand for a single pocket hole but couldn't fine it after the move, so I ran to Home Depot and my only option was a kreg...too expensive for me taste LOL!
