I have a comprehensive, detailed set of plans for this table for sale on my Etsy page here:
www.etsy.com/l...
Shaker inspired furniture is timeless and classic. I recently designed and built this table out of solid walnut, employing both sliding dovetail and drawbore mortise and tenon joinery. I used a hybrid combination of power tools and hand tools for this build.
I designed this table myself based on a classic shaker style, with tapered legs and a bevel on the underside of the top overhang to give the table a lighter, airier feel. The primary wood is black walnut, while for a secondary wood I used poplar.
The top is held to the frame with clips that allow for seasonal expansion and contraction of the solid wood top. The aprons are joined to the legs with drawbore mortise and tenon joinery. There is a central poplar cross member which is held in place with a sliding dovetail joint.
The table is 72" x 36" with a table-top height of 29" off of the floor.

David.... My e mail address is on my pitiful ancient, soon to be overhauled, web site..
contact me if you like..
PS I finally realized I have not up thumbed and subscribed. Consider that done.
I´m going to be making a very similar table, I´m curious how long it took you to finish this project?
@@nickmagma7745 Good question! This build took me two weekends.
Muy bonito el proceso, ...quizá 2 pulgadas de espesor en el canto del sobre hubiera quedado un poquito mejor, ...o sea para tu próximo proyecto prueba y compara, jeje
you inspire me to have my shed one day for some woodworking diy project man!
No routers, no domino's, no epoxy, no noise and no dust. Just good old planing and dowels. I love it.
Thanks for the encouragement Tjerk I’m glad you like my style!
He did use a router but your right about the domino
Did you miss the parts where he used a table saw and router table, or the circular saw with no vac attached? But I do agree with your sentiment I think. It's nice to see someone blending hand tools and power tools without all the trendy hype stuff. Just whatever's simplest to get the job done well. And the lack of talking excitedly to the camera is refreshing too, but still with the information in subtitles.
Real joinery !!! No Pocket screws or dominos. I knew someone could still do it. Great Build!!
Thanks so much Patz I'm glad you appreciate the effort!
Oh give it a rest. He uses a drill press and a circular saw. At what point do you draw the line?
you didn't say a word and did better at showing how things are done than some of the other guys. bravo my man. it's even funny 😂
Thanks so much Kirby! Glad you liked it :)
Nice to see that Zelensky still has time to work on his woodworking projects on the side
😂
🤣🤣🤣 That explains the underground bunker vibes for the workshop.
@@psuryava 😆
I was expecting a poor man's knockoff, but it was the real thing!
😂😂Ha, ha, my first thought 😂😂
Great to see you showcasing your tools that aren't all the big name expensive ones. Gives hope for us who can't afford it all! Great work.
I agree, you don’t need the fanciest tools to make great furniture!
Thank you for including the step where we stare at the wood for a long time until it speaks to us!
😆 Thanks Charles! I had to cut out like 15 minutes of footage of me doing just that. It's a critical step!
Nice job, thanks for showing the leg drop on the floor. We all have our moments!
Thanks Craig! It pains me to rewatch it 😂
Absolutely magnificent, it will be some family’s heirloom. Incredible craftsmanship, and what a blessing to have access to such sublime wood. He did not lose his temper when the nearly finished leg fell to the floor from the bench.
Wow those are some very kind words, thank you for sharing. I’m so glad you liked the build!
These little hacks you use on your work it seems that you are a Pro. Wonderful video . Thank u.
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate you watching and commenting 😊
Beautiful table and work. I love the Shaker design. It never goes out of style.
Thanks for the kind words Chris, glad you like it!
Amazing work. I love seeing talented builders use basic or inexpensive tools. I have a couple Wen machines and they haven't let me down yet.
Thank you so much for the appreciation Jeffrey! I love my Wen drill press, oscillating spindle sander, disk sander, and air filter!
Oh how I loved the “ find my happy place “ when the leg went south. We have all be there. Love and respect for anyone who make the efforts with hand tools.
😂 thanks for the support Stephen!
Outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail. And without Festool
Thanks Phil I appreciate the support!
Nice... very few fasteners an a lotta hand work. Love the simple lines. Love that you are not jabbering all the way through it. Love the bits where you are dropping things and making fun like we all do:)
Thank you for the very kind words! I'm glad you liked it :) I appreciate the comment!
It’s refreshing to watch you work. No wall of clamps worth more than all my tools, same lunch box planer I use. It helps folks like me realize we can make beautiful things with what we have. That a $1000 Festool track saw isn’t needed for these kinds of results.
Thanks so much Jeff, it's always tempting to save up and try to buy the expensive stuff, but it's important to question if you REALLY need it... IMO you rarely do, it's just more convenient. You can build an awful lot with an awful little if you are patient enough. Thanks for watching!
@@dkbuilds yeah but how much are those planes worth tho? >.< Just a little jealous.
I like it I'll use a lot of this on mine. I've already done my chairs in walnut and this matches really well. I really like how well maintained your tools appear to be, all your planes look sharp and well cleaned!!!! Good Video, Thanks Again.
Thanks HB, glad to see another walnut fan. Best of luck on your build!
The whole process was mesmerising to watch. The simplicity of the design, coupled with your attention to detail equals perfection. What an exquisite end product. Well done.
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you liked it!
Wow loved the end result and the wood ASMR! 🥰🥰🥰 I'm 65 years old and I've been exploring wood work ASMR content for over 2 years now. My old bones are still getting used to this new tech😂. This is the best I've found. Good job(:
awww your so sweet i hope you have a great day 💀💀
It’s a nice change without a voice over it’s so therapeutic to watch. Great build it looks stunning I love the delicate legs it sets it off
That's awesome Bradley I really appreciate the feedback!
No bells and whistles, just the pure and simple design of shaker style, my favorite ! Thanks for sharing, you're a great inspiration for me !
Thank you so much Colonel, glad you liked the video! Super proud to inspire you!
Thanks for putting that many details and hints to this video. I love such style in woodworking video.
Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you liked it! I'll make similar styled videos in the future!
I just found your channel and watched this video. You drew me in! I had to subscribe. It's nice to watch someone take the time to work with wood the old fashioned way and turn out such a beautiful table. What you do takes skill and patience. No hurry...you get there when you get there. It's a great life lesson that you obviously take to heart (centering after watching the leg disappear off the table...🙂). Great video...I'll be watching more. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the kind feedback, Douglas! Welcome to the channel!
I really appreciated the asmr style while also having narration available via closed captioning - excellent build and great content
Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely make more videos in this style in the future!
I absolutely love your style of video - just the woodworking audio and the explanation over Close Captions. It really is the best of both worlds. You have my vote for keeping this style of video! And amazing table too :)
Heck yeah, thanks for the feedback John! I'll try to keep making more videos in this style in the future. Cheers!
Gorgeous table, simplicity is the essence of elegance. I am about to embark on a similar project using mahogany, which is more affordable but harder to work with due to grain structure. Thanks for posting!
Mahogany is cheaper than Walnut? I had no idea. I only use lumber from local logs I take to the sawmill, so I'm completely out of touch on lumber prices. Btw are you using African or South American Mahogany? Cheers!
Good luck on your project! Yes I used mahogany for my hand tool cabinet and boyyyy it was frustrating to work with at times. At the end it is worth it though, such a beautiful wood!
Ha the pencil sharpener was brilliant! I’ve been a professional woodworker for 30 years and I never thought of that. Thanks very well done video.
Thanks Dy, I'm proud to have showed you something new! Thanks for watching
Love the use of simple but elegant designs and the mix of power and hand tools! Give an Andy Rawls feel to the video and workmanship! Subbed!
Thanks so much Greg! I'll have to check out Andy's channel, thanks for sharing!
Good work. The beveled edge provides a remarkably graceful line, coupled with the recessed skirt and tapered legs.
Thanks so much Hacker! I spent a lot of time deciding all the bevel angles and proportions in SketchUp before building. It definitely paid off!
Love the hockey stick wrap on your mallet. Great job and keep it up.
You must watch a lot of Paul Sellers?
Thanks! I do watch a lot of Paul! I learned the hockey stick wrap trick from Rob Cosman
Tbh the most impressive part for me is the flattening by hand. You did a great job. Nice clean design, no over the top stuff.
Thanks so much Thanos I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I love the simple elegance of that table.
Thanks for the kind words Rob, I'm glad you like it!
Wonderful stunning piece of craftmanship so wonderful to watch yep i know how frustrating it is when stuff falls on the floor !!!!
still a master piece to be proud of Nice work !!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you liked the video!
Wow I love your dowel making method. The pencil sharpener is genius!
Thanks!! I’m glad to have shown you something new!
Beautiful,hard work and devotion pays
Thanks so much Seth!
Aside from building a beautiful table, your production quality is top notch. Your use of closed captions to provide additional details throughout the project was brilliant and made it that much more enjoyable to watch in my opinion. I hope more woodworkers see this and follow suit. I’m fairly picky when it comes to who I subscribe to, but with absolutely zero hesitation, you just earned one more follower. Excellent job man!
That's great to hear, thank you Cody and welcome to my channel! Really glad you like the format and I appreciate the feedback. I'll try to make more videos in this style in the future, I've only recently started experimenting with it. Cheers!
Good to show the offset draw boring method when pinning the legs at the mortise and tenon joint. Often misunderstood but good old traditional joinery and it has a purpose. Nice job and outstanding traditional woodworking!
Thanks for the kind words JD! I really appreciate it!
I very much like and enjoyed the video and the end result. Very pleasing design, beautifully crafted. Good on you. Cheers...
Thank you for the kind words Robert! Cheers
"Simple", elegant and strong. What a beautiful timeless dining table you've built! Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the kind words Andrea, I’m glad you like the table!
Great video! I wish all woodworking videos were like this
Thanks so much James! I'll try to make more 😇
I'd be happy if most 'build' videos were like this one. Really well done. Great table too.
Thanks so much James! I’m glad you like the video style, I’ll be making more like this in the future for sure!
Simple and elegant design! I hope you enjoy it for many years to come. Beautiful work!
Thank you so much jc, I will!
Laconic and harmonious. Job well done.
Thanks so much!
Very elegant and timeless design and great execution. Turned out lovely.
I used drawbore halflaps in my last video to join 8 foot 2” walnut boards on end! It’s a magnificent technique!
You rock. Thanks T
That's awesome! I've never done end-to-end joining before, I'll have to check that out!
I learned so much in 21 minutes. Awesome video and beautiful table!
That's awesome, thank you so much! I'm glad it was useful for you!
Excellent video. I agree with other comments: it's great to see some serious woodworking done without a workshop full of Festool and other expensive tools and machinery.
Thanks so much Peter, I appreciate the comment and the feedback!
This was really well done thank you. I enjoyed that you left in your overgluing
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed me leaving that in!
Gotta love screwing something in from the back like you did with the bracers. Youve eyeballed and checked the depth to make sure it wont burst through the face edge but you always give a little rub to make sure afterwards anyway. Heart in mouth.
Haha also with the clips through to the top of the table. Scary every time!
Good job! The Shaker simplicity has always been a favorite of mine!!
Thanks so much Tim I'm glad you like the build!
fantastic videography, no voiceover, brilliant work... CONGRATULATIONS
Thanks so much Helder, I appreciate your feedback!
Great work. Really nice table.
Thank You Sir,
Thanks so much Ricky! I appreciate the support!
Awesome video! Very inspired. Just what I was looking. Thank you
That's awesome, I'm proud to have inspired you!
Beautiful table~! Will have to check out your plans as this design is perfect for my son who is getting married in April and will be needing a dining table. Great job~!
Awesome Andrew, thanks so much! A custom dining table is a great gift idea!
I really enjoyed this video! Very nice table, and very cool to see projects like this done with some handtools! Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching tringsby! Glad to hear you appreciate the hand tool use!
The nail on the floor tip is awesome 🎉
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Magnificent! I’m getting ready to build a small hall table from cherry (my first attempt at using quality lumber) using only hand tools. Your video was a big help in determining how I will go about building it. Thanks!
That's awesome Pit! Cherry is a great place to start with hardwoods, it's a joy to work with. Good luck with your build!
Beautiful, minimalist table design.
Thank you very much!
The Shakers built distinctive trestle tables. What you have built is a very nice table of "Danish modern" or "mid-century modern" to design
Beautiful!!! Very skilled craftmanship and inspirational!!! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for the kind words and for commenting! Cheers!
Thank you for not ruining the video with music 🙏
No problem! I don't think I'll ever make a video with music again haha
@@dkbuilds 😅.. thank youuuu 😁😁😁
Beautiful table. Impressed by your clean workshop too!
Thanks so much for the kind words Wolverine!
Beautiful Table, Quality Build‼️ Vinny 🇺🇸
Thanks Vinny! Glad you liked it!
❤. I dont speack English but I love this table and the way yo do it. Excelent Job. Congratulations.
Thank you so much Silvina!
Brilliant, I don’t normally comment. The use of hand planes alone is a dying skill, keep it going
Thanks for the kind words Manj! I will definitely keep it going -- hand planes are my favorite tools to use.
Great vid. Beautiful table. Would suggest considering finishing both sides of top to help alleviate cold and warm weather stress on unfinished side.
Great tip Jerry! I totally agree. I did actually finish both sides but I don't show finishing the underside on the video. Good catch!
Outstanding work. Love the use of so many traditional woodworking principles! 🙂
Thanks so much Matthew, I'm glad you liked it!
Absolute beautiful table and elegant video. Just started a pair of shaker nightstands. Similar classic Shaker style/shape, much smaller but with a drawer.
Awesome Kevin! Shaker night stands are one of my favorite things to build. Hope yours turn out great!
Perfect mix of hand tools and electro tools :)
Thank you!
I think the support part use walnut will be perfect 😊
Thanks for the feedback Douglas!
Classy little ending, excellent build video!
Thanks for the kind words Matthew!
Thanks for the great tips and guides. Excellent table.
Thank you for watching and commenting, I’m glad you liked it!
Hello @dkbuilds I hope that all is well in your world! Lets see you build a humidor! You are incredibly talented, and you create beautiful work pieces! looking forward to the next project.
Thank you so much Berry! A humidor is a fantastic idea, I'll take that into consideration! Stay tuned for another build soon :)
I can learn a lot from your videos, subscribed!
Thanks so much Andy, welcome to my channel!
Beautiful shop, sure beats working on the floor lol. Good video with nothing but work being done and no dribble about preferences or useless information. Straight to the point and I love that. Subscribed and looking forward to more content! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Heck yeah! Thanks so much UUC, I appreciate the comment and especially the sub! Welcome to my channel :)
The timing of your video is amazing. Just picked up some Sapele today to make an almost identical table (size is a little shorter, to be determined later) and was making notes about plans and how to build it. It's my first attempt to building a table. Your video is perfect, even the tools you are using are the same as what I am going to use. Bought your plans and looking forward to building this. Thanks!
That's awesome! Thanks kp! I'm excited to hear how your table comes out. If you have any questions about the build or the plans don't hesitate to email me and I'll respond ASAP. Cheers!
Beautiful job!!! I loved the look on your face when the leg fell over - we've all been there and had tto steam out a couple of dents, buut it's all part of the process. Great style, keep them coming!!
😂 Thanks for the kind words David! Appreciate you watching!
Nicely done. Your table was almost identical to one I made a few years ago with the only differences being I turned my legs and I used locally grown air dried walnut with one board resawn and book matched for the top. I wanted to mention that you can buy a japanese saw with the teeth set on only one side so when you cut off dowels you won't scratch the wood These saws are called Kugihiki.
Thanks Lewis, I appreciate the tips! Your table sounds beautiful, I'd love a bookmatched top. Thanks for sharing the name of the saw, I've known I need a flush cut saw for years but now I know exactly what to look for. Cheers!
Proof that you don't need top tier tools to do top tier work.
True that! Thanks for watching Don :)
Like your style of video production and especially like the table. It is stunning and will be a welcome addition to the room it will live in. Well done!!
Thank you for the kind words Pinta, I'll try to keep making more videos like this one!
Beautiful, i love such a highly experienced works like this. Keep it up!
Thanks so much Akos, I will!
Fantastic.....no goddam**d music......just the sound of woodworking.
Thanks Richard! Glad you like the format!
That is a gorgeous table, cheers!
Thanks so much! Cheers!
The table is very beautiful, great work!
Thanks so much!
Great idea using the wood shavings to clean up the glue on the table top
Thanks Nail!
Beautiful table. Loved your video. I just made a table top 24x48 with approx 70-90 1/2" oak dowels. Lost count! Lol--- Solid like a tank. I will be doing more projects with just dowels of all colors. No biscuits just dowels. But my table top has an slight cupping after glue up and I'm trying to fix it. It was perfectly flat before glue up.😢
Thanks! Sorry to hear about the cupping. Did you use cauls during the glue up like I did? Also if it is cupping upwards (like “U”) you can use the clips that hold it onto the table frame to help keep it flat.
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you for making the video!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Good job & video, mate ! I work the same way...
You just gave me some nices ideas, thank you for sharing !
That's great, I'm proud to have inspired you. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Nice to see some hand tool love! Great result
Thanks Wouter, I'm glad you liked it! Cheers!
Great video , enjoyed every minute off it
Thank you! That's the best comment I can hope for!
This is a beautiful table.
Thank you so much!
I’d bet Paul Sellers would be proud, man!
Heck yeah I'd hope so! He's a big inspiration. Cheers
Absolutely a pleasure to watch mate 👍🏻 top notch
Thanks for the kind words Patrick!
Very nice video and the table is gorgeous. From the trailer I wondered if the legs would be too skinny for a table that size, but they turned out great. Really focuses on the top a lot more. - Chris
Thanks so much Chris! I thought about the legs a lot and modified them over and over in the sketchup design, I'm also happy with how they turned out. Cheers!
Love your stuff man! Great dedication to hand tools. I bought and learned how to use a rabbit plane bc of you!
That's awesome James! I really appreciate you watching and commenting!
This whole video is a weird flex on how sharp his planes are…..😂😂😮😮
Nice work, looks great
Lol!! All sharpened by hand too ;) Thanks for watching!
I love work. I could watch it all day. 😊
Thanks 😊
Amazing build man. Looks great.
Thanks for the kind words, Jonathan!
Beautiful Table. Excellent Video. Subscribed!!
Thanks so much! Welcome to my channel!
very high quality built! enjoyed watching it!
Thanks so much Max, glad you liked it!
Nice project. Can you make a videos about your dust collection? I have a small place and I need ideas thanks.
Thanks! Maybe I'll make a video in the future. In general I have a powerful dust collector bolted to the wall with an upgraded canister filter, and a large cyclone which drops the larger dust particles into a trash can. From there I have a direct connection with a blast gate to my table saw, and a second connection with a long flexible hose (and blast gate) that I carry around from tool to tool.
