    Howdy Mr. 731..
Dug up this gem of a video from your early days..
Father's day is coming up and my wife wants me to build her dad (I call him Pops) a patio table for the porch umbrella we just bought him for his birthday a month ago.
Little did we know or even think about...those umbrellas, even with the 50lb base we got, is NOT a stand alone umbrella. The slightest breeze knocks it over.
Soo...It needs a table to be inserted into.
Quick search on RUclips and found your video...AGAIN (I've watched it several times before. But now, I'm looking for ideas.
So, I'm gonna incorporate aspects of your build along with some other tables I've seen...tweak them a bit and build my Pops an umbrella table.

Thanks again for your easy to follow build on the farm table. I just finished the table for thanksgiving. My wife loves the look and we went with a black stained base and a gray stained top made from 2x12's. My table is counter height and 72 inches long and 44 inches wide. Best part is I made it for half of what it would cost and built benches for it for that price.

First of all…your channel is awesome man. Lots of great info. I’ve been doing woodworking for a good while and I’ve learned some new techniques that work great alongside my current techniques. I’m new to furniture builds though. My question, is it possible to use 4x3’s instead of 4x4’s? I’ve got some kiln dried white oak that’s 4x3’s and old barnwood that I reclaimed myself. I’m sure it’s possible to do this same project with the 4x3’s however, if it’s a much more tedious approach then I’ll break down and purchase some 4x4’s. Appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thanks again.

I do have a question. I am currently building this table and my wife asked the question about moving the table. I am using Zclamps to secure the top to the base. I know it is not recommended to lift the table by the top to move it. So when you move your table how are to carrying it? Should a customer remove the top to get it into their home?

    • @731Woodworks

    • @patrickhenry240

    Hi Matt,
One thing you mentioned about the 4 inch screws not having much grabbing power in the 4 x 4 but plenty strong with the glue. Couldn't you just counter sink a little deeper with a larger bit after drilling the pilot hole to get that screw a little deeper? Just a thought. I'm sure it's plenty strong as is, especially with the generous glue. I was just curious as a novice if there may be a reason not to do that. Thanks again for the great videos.

Hey Matt - I'm making your table (downsized by 20%) for a playroom table for my grandkids. Went to Sherwin Williams and asked for "Bisquit" white. They have something only called "Bisquit" so I got it. Ended up being a very light peach-like color. Is this the same as you used on your table? Yours looks 'white' in the videos. Thanks

Do you have a tip for the exposed cut edges on the feet so that they look neat? Is it just sanding well and depending on the type of wood used?
I paid someone to make me a table out of fir and 6 months later it is cracked and boards have pulled apart. It appears he just used lumber from the box store. We are in the process of rebuilding it. The feet we have just look like stained saw cuts and I want to make it look nicer. Maybe that isn't possible with pine? Will look for fir but just in case it isn't available.

Sanding with high grit will help. If the boards cracked, then you’ll need to rebuild it with new wood

I am about to build two tables for a customer, both will be built from 4X4's. Is there anything that you have learned since this video that you would do differently? I am thinking about trimming the rounded edges for a cleaner look, also wondering about the joinery, 3 screws and glue enough to last? I am wondering if heavier lag bolts are needed. Any help is appreciated.

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  4 года назад

Trimming the edges would give it a cleaner look. You could use lag bolts but be sure to pre drill so it doesn’t split the wood. I’ve had my personal table built just like this one in the video now for 3.5 years and we haven’t had any issues.

I just used 4x4 and pocket holes to secure them to each leg on each end. Then used the upright braces attached the same way between them. I set the pocket hole jig on the same setting I would for a 2x4.

Hi matt - at 17:30 I am having issues with the stretchers. You have the plans to cut them at 25 in but it is way to short. I was wondering how long your stretchers were? I went by the plans but mine do not look right.

You could make a jig or something similar to a track saw and use a circular saw like this video ruclips.net/video/ukM0rz0GwBY/видео.html then with the new jig you can do this ruclips.net/video/eCIovD2kdoM/видео.html

I'm just checking in to see 'if/when' you're planning on a paint-booth? I know they can take up quite a lot of space.
Or is it your experience that for 'Farm-House-Style' decor, it just isn't necessary. I plan to focus on smaller, high profit, quick sell, quick easy make.

Hope you all won't mind if I pass along a tip: When gluing end grain, first apply a light coat of glue to the end grain and allow it to dry. Then go ahead and apply fresh glue to the parts you want to join and put it together. Once the end grain is sealed by the first coat of glue, you will have a good strong joint.
