This is a great era of Superman comics, it's basically Superman, The Soap Opera. Every issue is a done in one and you get a comic filled with a huge supporting cast and the subplots bleed over from title to title. Its something that I don't think modern comics can do at all, its like forgotten knowledge. DC need to reprint this whole era, 1986 - 1999 into omnis!
100%!
Wish they made Byrne man of steel omnibus
It was super impressive what they did back then. The comic "52" got a lot of praise for being a weekly book, but for whatever reason people were known to the the "Triangle era" or Superman that lasted 11 years.
Exile is amazing. One of a handful of Superman stories that completely showcases who the character is. Superman isn't perfect, he feels the burden of his powers and his moral responsibility so intensely that at times he's a liability to himself. In a lot of ways, he's the most decent 'human' being in DC Comics. Kal-El isn't a hero because he's Kryptonian... Clark Kent is a hero because he was raised by Ma & Pa Kent.
Those early Mike Mignola pages in Superman 23. Awesome stuff!
Before World War Hulk was Superman Exile.
Always makes me happy to see the Superman love. I’m finishing up the Byrne era right now and then I’m excited to jump into this Omni!
When I was a kid in the Netherlands in the early 90's, you did not have as much Superman comics as they had in the United States. But they did release collections in a omnibus format. So I had two paperback Superman omnibus comics (still have them) that had about half of the stories that are in this Exile edition, but sometimes out of order and missing parts. I've ordered this new hardcover and I am looking forward to finally reading the complete story in the correct order. Incidentelly, one of those Dutch omnibuses uses the exact same cover as this collection, so I really like the cover choice!
“Like I said Lex Luthor tryna lose a couple LBs Im not really mad at em” that had me rolling for some reason 🤣
I've always have been a HUGE fan of the OG Superman. When you want a genuine superhero comic you grab Superman.
I had no idea this was "less popular". I LOVE the early years of post-Crisis Superman, so many great stories, a true supporting cast you cared about, and genuine stakes. The Exiled storyline is an absolute classic. I've been reading the Man of Steel HCs collecting the Byrne reboot, and with vol 4 being the final one there is a big gap between that and this Omni which I hope gets collected.
Still on my list of my omnibus' to read, currently reading volume 2 of 3 of the Man Of Steel HC leading up the material in Superman Exile. Be Excellent.
I totally remember parts of this from my childhood. Especially the ripping off the chest reveal.
Reading the 4 John Byrne HCs will increase enjoyment of this omni. Great and severely under appreciated era for Post-Crisis Superman.
I’ve got this gem 💎 need to read it I’m on any superman omnibus that comes out 👍👍
Back then warworld Supe always gave me sean connery zardoz vibes : P
This has been on my want list for awhile. I need to pull the trigger. The cover for Action comics annual #2 should have been the cover to the omnibus. The "Gladiator" superman by George Perez is fantastic. So many strong stories during this time period.
This story and "Day of the Krypton man" is essential to understanding the death and return story.
Loving the omni reviews!!
I'm part of that crowd that hasn't read this. It's always cool to check out the older stuff to see it's influence in more recent runs.
This was one of the earliest Omnis I bought. Death and Return hadn't been reprinted yet and aside from the old school Golden Age stuff, there were literally no Superman books. Picked it up, read it almost right away, and like you, I loved it. Just good, wholesome story telling. Very enjoyable and underrated. Loved the art and even the supporting character stuff was very good. Glad to see these Omni reviews return. Yes, I totally understand loosing the fire to read them, it can come and go for sure. Phases.
I love the in depth breakdown when you do these videos g
Great video as always dude, I dig the silhouette sups happening throughout this omni. Cool story thanks!
Awesome video, love that you’re back to basics!
It's great you're back doing this kind of reviews. That was thirty minutes of nonstop goodness.
Great to see these! Thanks for sharing!
Super happy to see you doing omni and collected edition reviews man, It's what brought me to the channel!
I love these reviews, keep on making that epic content,Gem! You are epic and an awesome unboxing youtuber!
I wasn't familiar with this era of Superman. Thanks for the detail!
Loving these review Gem. Your knowledge of the characters, and honesty are great and really make the reviews great. They don't feel as long as they actually are.
I didn't know this Omni existed, it has to go on my list. I wish I could have snagged the Death and Return of Superman when it was reprinted but I just missed out.
Don't worry. Death and Return is literally being reprinted for the fourth time next year.
Thanks for the comprehensive review, Gem. I'm SOLD. Will be it at my LCBS. Thanks again! And, Happy Holidays!
Nice, thorough review...I have to say I am also a sucker for later 80s/early 90s art and this stuff looks clean and detailed with good storytelling. Might have to check this out at some point.
You need to get the 4 John Byrne man of Steel hardcovers as they lead directly into this omnibus so im waiting to read this omnibus until I've read the 4 Byrne books
Great review. I might have to check this one out. I am a huge fan of Bronze Age stories. I can’t believe we haven’t gotten any Bronze Age Superman omnis yet (like they did with Justice League and Brave & Bold).
I remember diving into this omnibus when it first came out knowing that it threads into the death and return omnibus and I loved it. I agree it’s an overlooked book for sure and maybe it is because of the title.
Gem is back to OG form with new omni reviews yes! 🙌
Awesome, love the Omni reviews 👍🏼
Loving the return of the Omni videos! Originally what I subbed to your channel for!!!
You give negative real reviews unlike some other reviewers!
WWH took from Superman on WW in this story. Great omni. Great Superman run that kick off the beginning of the end of his death. But we're still missing one more omnibus in between this and Death & Return. "Panic In the Sky."
Awesome. Thanks for another great review! 🙂
Looks like an interesting read. I gotta start picking up some Superman stuff I’ve always avoided it for some reason.
Looks cool, I was never the biggest Superman solo stories fan, but I love him in the Justice League stories.
Great video!!!! I like your reviews of the omnis. This Superman Omni looks awesome, i didn't know it is so good.
Gem got the fresh T on. One of the best records of all time in my opinion.
Yea elementary school summer vibes
I bought that Omni when it came out and haven't gotten around to reading it yet, was planning on reading it after the Superman by John Byrne Omnibus that got announced and got cancelled in favor of regular trades. Glad you liked it!
Another awesome video thank you for doing this awesome video I like what you do all the time talking about the omnibus Superman I like this book so much and I hope you and all your family members are having a wonderful day and night thank you so much for showing this book off for us
I did go down stairs and pulled the DJ off to check it out lol. I’m on Batman ZS and GC Omni 2 right now. But I might have to jump into that one next. When you got so many Omni’s it hard to pick which one you want to read next lol. But hey that !zombies Omni I got off you yesterday on whatnot. You should do a overview on that haven’t found shit on that book. I just bought it off you because it was a DC book 😆 even if you have to review the one I bought before you ship. Great review
Love it. We need all of these in Omni format.
I just bought this book from OPB because I love the era and the lead up to DoS. Love Jurgens.
I’m a huge Superman fans but truly overlooked this omnibus. I will search for it, now. Thanks for the video.
I wasn't going to get this but now I will thanx for this review
Man, I live these in depth Omni reviews. Especially books I may not get a chance to read. This story sounds really good.
Great Review dude. Hellblazer Omnibus!!!!
Need to collect this one.
Great review. Do more please
I’m gonna buy the Death and Return of Superman omni in 2022. It’s on preorder in January in DC Connect.
Amazing information
This was either the first or second omni that I ever read and I loved it. Underrated book. Just wish there was another omni or two between this and the Death and Return of Superman since the cliffhanger at the end of this omni really leaves you wanting more.
great review
“Sabotage “😂🔥
Another great omnibus review.
Cowabunga Geminites 🤙 150k here we come 👊DOOKIE!🤘
Best Superman storyline imo.
Am pretty sure it was Morgan Edge. This was really good work, glad that it isout .
On my list!
What happened to the Matrix? Read Peter David's Supergirl. It ends with one of my favorite stories, "Many Happy Returns"
I think it's an omnibus that's a bit difficult to recommend because you truly have to have context in order to appreciate it. You can't just jump in: if you haven't read Byrne's run and Invasion, there are so many subplots in this omnibus that you'll get lost and give up. However, it makes it a very, very good omnibus for people who enjoyed the stories that led to it!
Exile was the first superhero comic I‘ve ever read. Got me hooked for 30 years so far. 😁
You literally just sold this omnibus to me. Im always looking for some good Superman to read
Im the same way. I think theres certain comics that read better as a omni or just a regular trade or hard cover.
This is my favorite Superman arc. I have the original TPB but I really want this Omnibus. Also I stinking suspicion that Superman: Exile inspired Planet Hulk. But I've never heard any confirmation of that.
I like the reviews I just hope the views are good enough for ya gem
The art is nice in this
Yo gem, this might be a big ask but I’d love to see you review the dc crisis stuff, I’m curious to see what you think of each event.
Dope video, you’ve made me want to buy this omnibus!
I own this Omni. I am waiting to read all of the Superman man of steele HC volumes before reading this.
Definitely now want to find this Omni of superman exile it looks so and I'm not a big Superman fan at all
I had a lot of those comics at least 10 I'm going to give that a read
Man, when are they going to do a Geoff Johns or Kurt Busiek omnibus?
Superman 23 Mignola pencils Russell inks whaaaaaat
Before Hellboy, Mignola was pretty in demand as a freelancer around this time. He did a lot of work on Batman and Wolverine too.
You should read Sleeper.
Own it. Love it. Best period for superman.
Looks to be a good Omnibus. I really never read that story.
Definitely a period that gets forgotten in the wake of Death.
Not the huge Superman fan. Really only dig one story. All Star
I love this Omni, agreed it is kind of a cult following. Great review and great book!
I recognize these plots from Superman TAS and a bit from Smallville.
Did anyone else noticed very minimal glue on the binding?
Dope
The story was good, I loved it but the thing is the "oxygen tank, when he hovers in space on earth like why. The "small piece of kryptonite" is another thing like really
U think we ever will get ultimate spiderman omni vol 2??
I don’t understand why they can’t do original covers on one side and on the back the cover with no titles or text etc.
Expensive Paper!!
Do you know how many volumes of Superman Byrne it would take to reach the death of Superman? Also is that the correct order. I think there are 4 hardcovers right now. Might be wrong, there might be 9 haha
Now THIS, is when writing, was writing!!
Love this era
This book leads directly into the Death of Superman, that alone is reason enough to get it.
Actually it leads to "Panic In the Sky." Then into Death & Return.
Not Superman or DC related but, since the movie came out this year, have you read the Dune comic series? I love the books but am unsure about getting it.
Never read it. Did watch the new movie though
I've noted that only 1 other commentor corrected you that the character you keep mentioning is "Morgan Edge", not Martin or Mike! I'm guessing that you were just checking to see how many people would catch your "intentional" wrong character reference!
Getting them comments up! Lol
Morgan Edge! Morgan!!!!
🤩🤩👏👏 great brow
hey guys, just a quick question. Is this omnibus new reader friendly ? Haven't read a lot of superman.
I think it’s the best for new readers
@@GemMintCollectibles Thank you ! I will buy it then. Love and support from France.
👍
READ JOHN BYRNE 1986 MAN OF STEEL 1986
3:31 It didn't age well because that's every woman in 2021 🤣
