Man, between this review and you guys's weekly Last of Us reviews, it just makes me so happy I discovered KindaFunny. Watching these historic moments in video games adaptations with you fellas, who you can tell have so much love for the source material, it's just fantastic!
The immediate facepalms from everyone when Greg brought up the OKC bombing absolutely took me out, lol. That and Andy’s reaction to the Jurassic shirt reveal. Everyone at Kinda Funny is some version of a class clown, but Greg brings an off the rails energy that really puts him in a different category :)
Not that I did want Kevin to get hurt, but when he ran off set with the bucket of popcorn, did I want to see him trip? After all we hear about his legendary clumsiness.... you bet your ass I did.
Mario doing power slides on the rainbow road straight away was everything to me. In me head I was thinking, "That's some pro moves right there!"
About Mario's dad, he looks almost exactly like Talon from Ocarina of Time, which funnily enough was a reference to Mario in that game. Brilliant.
TIM! Andy didn't mess up the last sound - he just went down an octave for the last three notes, which threw you off LMAO

My 5 year old loved this movie. It was perfect for her. And it hit all the nostalgic points for me great time. 8 out of 10.

I know Nick sounds kinda nictpicky but he’s right that the story telling behind some references was lacking. For example the drifting boost doesn’t mean anything to a viewer. It’s not explained but fan get that like pop of like he hit the purple boost! It doesn’t teach new audiences how that’s exciting
Meanwhile, I‘m watching the OG Super Mario Bros Movie on German Netflix… (available until end of April)
I think the biggest compliment that can be given to this movie is just how excited kids are when they see it. Hearing kids excitedly name off the various power-ups, characters, or even references was something that I wasn’t expecting when I went to see the movie. Then when the post credit scene came on some kid excitedly yelled out the name of the character and told his parents about what it is before immediately asking when the next one would be out. The same way that Shrek and Toy Story dominated my generation growing up, I think the Mario movie will have a massive impact on the current generation

I'm in between Greg and Nick and everyone else. I enjoyed it bc of the nostalgia, but the writing wasn't great and that did negatively effect my experience. Overall I liked it tho.
Cinemascore is it's own company, the rotten tomatoes audience score can correlate but when you said it's 98% audience score gives this an A+ I was confused as they haven't released the cinemascore yet. And 2, when you say critics didn't like it, that's not exactly true. It's mixed. A 53% means half of critics liked it. That's not bad reviews, that's mixed.

Hard agree with Greg.
The best kids movie are entertaining to everyone, so when kids grow up, they also get a kick out of them. That's why Puss in Boots 2, early Pixar, Teen Titans Go, they all shine. If you like the IP, you will love it, if you dont care much for it - this wont move the needle at all. If any, it's a shame how unambitious it is. I just hope Illumination doesnt touch Zelda at all, they work for shallow plot like Mario Bros, but Zelda has so much potential it would be a shame if they were to adapt it themselves
Jack Black's Bowser was easily the best part of this movie.
That's how it always goes, though: The villain _always_ steals the show.

A correction to the note Tim brought up about Kazumi Totaka, the Yoshi voice actor retained for this, that is in fact the one who hides a song in most of the games he composes. It is Totaka's Song, not Tanaka's Song, which I presume you derive from Chip Tanaka - known for Earthbound, Metroid, Kid Icarus, and numerous others - who is still an amazing composer, but not this particular one!
Tim: "It's shocking how much this looks like Nick."

I dont understand, did people want a character study from this? The plot was fun and what it needed to be- hero’s journey, fish out of water, family centric. I think the quick pace through it was great, got where we needed to go and didn’t linger on anything for too long to make it boring
I don't know if it was the gamer in me but I absolutely love this movie. Especially with the amount of references in the first 10 minutes. Jack Black is the man.

What happened to doing a mini 2 movie in review series with the old mario bros movie and this i thought tim said that was the plan a while ago?
I went in expecting to like this fine but I was pretty disappointed. Maybe I was just in a bad mood but it didn't give any of the feelings I get from playing the games. Significantly worse than the one from 30 years ago.

Saw this last night in 4dx. Enjoyed the movie but I will never watch another movie in 4dx. It sort of ruined the experience 🥺 But the movie was exactly what I expected and the crowd LOVED it 🎉
This is hilarious because Tim tweeted that he loved this movie in 4DX yesterday 😂 I think 4DX works best with dumb action movies where you dont care about missing some things, like Ambulance, or really cool "vehicle" movies like Top Gun Maverick

Anyway, amazing intro as always. I enjoyed the movie. I'm with Tim, I liked it more than Sonic for similar reasons. Reminds me a lot of why I generally disliked the Transformers movies and stopped watching them after the third or so.

This movie is a masterpiece from a visual perspective. The writing and plot could be a lot better, but if movies like Avatar can get a pass from being a beautiful, boring story, so can this (+ this has the benefit of all the nostalgia).
Mario has every reason to be as empty story wise look at marios track record we all play those games for the gameplay
