  • @langleymneely

This film and fans forcing themselves to “like” it at the time is a prime example of geeky genre stuff being adapted for live action by people with no respect for the source material. Like superhero films of the era if you were around when this came out it was like drinking feted sewer water after being in the desert for days! It’s toxic, rancid shit but you were so thirsty to see the things you loved adapted that you had to appreciate it and take what you could get. I hate being THAT old guy but ‘kids’ today have it SO much better with adaptations across the board. When I see people ragging on the MCU losing a step here and there all I can think is “we are so goddamn spoiled as an audience”. As a kid I had to get excited for shit like this or Meteor Man because it was so rare for this kind of shit to get green-lit. So glad things have changed!

  • @ieyke

So, here's the thing....Tim, Blessing, Nick, and Kevin are right about this movie.
Tim mentioned the SMB Movie Archive. I'm not affiliated with them, but if there's anyone who's on the same level of expertise as the guys who run that website, it's me.
I've literally taught those guys some stuff about this movie. So, without exaggeration, for some reason, I can genuinely claim to be one of the foremost experts on the subject of this movie. 🤷‍♂
And the thing is that Tim is right when he says that "This is what Mario WAS back then."
He's not just right in the sense of "Oh, this is what we THOUGHT Mario was"
No. This literally IS what Mario was back then. And the kicker - this IS STILL what Mario IS today.
Almost everything in this movie is pulled straight from the games.
It's not EXACT 1 to 1 translations, but more than anything that's because this movie is actually a COMBINATION of:
    1. Mario Bros
    2. Super Mario Bros
    3. Super Marion Bros 2
    4. Super Mario World
    5. Super Mario Land
    6. Super Mario Kart
Between those 6 games you can find virtually EVERYTHING in this movie.
The ONLY major difference in this movie is the visuals.
If you reskinned this movie with traditional Mario visuals, everyone would LOVE this movie and no one would question it being faithful to the games.
Broadly speaking, the movie's plot is the plot of SMB3.
The Mushroom King has been turned into a plant/animal (fungus) using Magikoopa wands (Devolution Gun).
Bowser is assisted by one of the Koopalings, Iggy and another Koopa prominent in SMB3, Spike.
It should also be noted that the original premise of the Mario games is that all those bricks and blocks and coins and stuff that are all over the place in the Mario world are the leftovers of Bowsers INITIAL invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom, and all of those blocks are actually Toads who've been transformed into objects.
    They're not just blocks. They're Bowser's victims.
Transforming the citizens of the conquered kingdom AND the Mushroom Kings has ALWAYS been Bowser's move.
The setting of the movie begins in Brooklyn, and involves monsters coming through an underground portal among the plumbing, which the Mario Bros discover, which leads them to the Mushroom World.
TO BE CLEAR, that IS the plot to the original Mario Bros game.
That's the canonical way the Mario Bros discover and enter the Mushroom World from Brooklyn.
The ORIGINAL Mario Bros game DOES take place in the Brooklyn sewers, and the original Donkey Kong DOES take place somewhere unspecified in NYC.
They absolutely HAVE always been from Brooklyn since Day 1.
Princess Daisy was the most current Princess at the time the movie was being made/released, as the princess of Super Mario Land.
She's the princess of the desert kingdom of Sarasaland. (Peach's cousin)
This movie is what canonically established Luigi and Daisy's relationship, which would later be made canon in the games.
This movie is also the first of several instances of musical Toads and Toads playing guitars - another thing the games would adapt.
Dinohattan is a combination of Super Mario World's Dinosaur Land, Yoshi's Island, and Daisy's desert kingdom Sarasaland all compressed into a single world mirroring Manhattan.
Bowser's final stand in the movie has him hanging over the area in a "bucket" in the air - meant to replicate Super Mario World's final Bowser fight, in which he hovers above the battlefield in his Koopa Clown Car.
The Shy Guys and Sniffits racing around in crazy Mad Max cars are meant to replicate Super Mario Kart.
The Goombas and Koopa Troopas swaying back and forth are meant to replicate the two-frame walking animations of the Goombas and Koopa Troopas in the games.
Mario and Luigi's rival plumbers are meant to replicate Wario, and the rival partner plumber predates the creation of Waluigi.
The Super Mario Bros Super Show introduced us to the plumbing school where Mario and Luigi learned their trade, and there we can see lookalikes of both Wario AND Waluigi in a lineup of plumbers alongside Mario and Luigi.
The premise of Mario and Luigi having rival plumbers mirroring them has been around since the beginning.
Scappelli SEEMS to be derived from the game Wrecking Crew, and SEEMS to be an export of Foreman Spike - Mario and Luigi's evil boss (who seems to be related to Wario and Waluigi).
In that sense, Scapelli employing the two rival plumbers makes perfect sense.
Scappelli being turned into a chimpanzee in the construction site is ALSO a homage to Mario's first appearance as Jumpman, battling Donkey Kong in a NYC construction site.
Mario's girlfriend Daniella was originally meant to be associated with Scappelli, and she's CLEARLY meant to be the movie's version of Pauline - liking Donkey Kong and Pauline is obviously straight from the original Donkey Kong arcade game.
SUPPOSEDLY there are versions of the movie's script that give Daniella's FULL name as Daniella Pauline Veducci, cementing that she's Pauline.
And that would be pretty much perfect and make complete sense.
    But I can't verify that.
It goes on and on and on.
    🤷‍♂
This movie ONLY gets the hate it does because it's aesthetically NOT what people were expecting.
They KNEW they couldn't pull off the actual traditional Mario aesthetic, so they went another direction entirely.
Choosing to go Blade Runner/Mad Max/Demolition Man with it.....is NUTS, but it's pretty fucking cool.
It was just waaaaay ahead of its time in terms of doing a dark gritty post-apocalyptic dystopian reimagining of Mario, which is super common nowadays (even SNL just did it), but at the time it was something that people simply weren't ready for.
    And that's fair.
It's NEVER going to sit well with people if you give them a weird version of something that they love BEFORE you give them a completely faithful version.
    That's just how people are.

Tim must have burned his taste buds off with some scalding pizza, because this movie was hot trash!! And nowhere near as good as TMNT (1990)!!!

I don’t care if it’s “bad” I still have a warm place in my heart for this movie.
