Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed this SOUL-CRUSHING story of how the original Super Mario Bros movie was a huge disappointment seeing it in the theater back in 1993. Who's going to see the new Super Mario Bros movie this week?! Let me know. Thanks for watching!
Hi Tyler. I'll be taking my son who has just received a Gameboy Advance SP and a copy of Super Mario World for his 10th birthday. He is really into Super Mario World right now between bouts of Minecraft and Roblox. Will be taking him to see the movie on Friday.

whats funny is his reaction to the super mario movie is kinda how i felt when i saw the phantom menace in theaters when i was 7. although i wasn't devastated like tyler was, i remember being rather bored and dissapointed with the movie after it had been hyped up so much. i had seen the original trilogy a few years prior when the 1997 special edition box sets came out, so when the new prequel movie was being teased, i was very hyped, expecting it to be like the original movies, but the final product felt nothing like starwars to me, and i found the movie to be kinda forgettable.
Not gonna lie, I was super about this movie when it came out. Something about it really did it for me even though it wasn't Mario. I saw it a few times in the theater and ended up buying my rented copy from my local video store. My grandpa and I couldn't stop quoting it.
@@yveltalpoderoso1303so, I saw not too long ago the reason it’s so bizarrely nothing like the video game. It’s, of course, bc the studio decided they had to axe the one single scene that tied everything together and “made it make sense.” I don’t remember exactly why the studio didn’t want the scene in the movie, but the end of the movie was supposed to be executives from Nintendo who show up on Mario and Luigi’s doorstep to make them an offer on their story and likeness. And the overall essence of the movie was, ironically, supposed to be about how bastardized all the media we see which was “based on a true story” becomes after being put through the corporate machines….

We’re about the same age and you painted a very accurate picture of my experience as well. I remember trying to be optimistic about it and the only thing I remember from the movie where I thought “Cool, that’s from a Mario game!” was the little bob-omb. That’s it! I also gotta say your videos are outstanding! So cool that you have such a large collection of home videos to bring us back to that era. Your dad seemed like an amazing guy too!
I didn't watch it in theaters but did when it was released on VHS. I was just as disappointed as you were. But I am so glad that you get to take your daughter to see the version we should have gotten. It's amazing to see that you're carrying on the gaming tradition with her...I love it Tyler.
Went to the premiere of the 1993 movie and couldn't understand for the life of me what I was seeing. Totally with you on that one and so amazed at the experiences you've had with your dad ❤
I'm surprised you and your dad did not saw the previews before watching this film in theaters. That's the reason why I skipped the movie in theaters back in 1993. I remember watching the previews back in 1993 on TV and thought they look so bad!
I saw this movie as a kid and I didn't care if it was different from the video games we grew up with. I still love it to this day! And I can't wait to see the new mario bros movie too!
@@191desperado I always loved those rocket shoes in that movie. When I was a kid I always wished I had those rocket shoes. I thought they were awesome! 😅
Same here, I remember knowing it was different, and that I didn't understand it completely - but I wasn't disappointed really. I must have went in with no expectations. I do remember thinking it was weird that king koopa was just a dude.

LOL 100%. I was around the same age and we watched it at a birthday party with a bunch of other kids. We were all horrified. The "koopa" transformation was terrifying hahaha.
This video was well done man! I actually teared up when you talked about how the roles are now reversed, and that now is the time where you may get to see Mario done right with your daughter. That was beautiful man! I hope it goes well for y’all! Much love!
A very good line in the video For me, that doesn’t apply since I don’t believe that I will end up as a parent, but you know what who knows Time will tell
I know how you feel. The betrayal (for the fans of the games) is unbearable to this day! P.S. I really liked the ending of the video. Very cool and hopeful 👍🏼
Hey Brotha, I too have a young daughter(s) of my own & it’s so special to be able to give them the childhood we had and also always wanted to have. Keep on being the best Dad in the world
I was 8 years old when the 93 movie was out. I actually enjoyed it. I still don't think it's as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The movie is so out there, original and strange.. and i loved that.
30 years latter they remake a better one i saw this movie in 2017 i was like what the fuck is this shit!? but at the same time i like how they had the 1993 movie set up but it was trash and wired an kind of funny at the same time
I honestly don’t really remember disliking it. I legit can’t really remember though. All I know is I’ll be seeing the 2023 movie this Friday! Let’s a gooooo
Thanks for these videos. I'm about the same age as you, born in 87. I get emotional feelings of nostalgia watching your videos. My 9-year-old loves watching them with me. When I watch your videos, I feel like it's taking me back in time with feelings I haven't had since I was a child. Thank you!
Pretty much the same story as you Tyler. My Dad took my friend and I, we were super pumped and then couldn’t believe the garbage that we were watching. I have high hopes for this one, hopefully not another disappointment!
I saw the 1993 Super Mario Bros in the drive-in with a double feature of Sandlot. I went for Mario, but left with a lifelong love for Sandlot which I hadn't heard of going in, so it's not all bad.
Well done. I'm in tears. You really captured it all. I can relate to the disappointment when the first SMB movie came out and sharing in our nostalgia with our children. SMB really spans generations. Pretty amazing stuff. Thanks for your content, I've really been enjoying it.
I was 17 when this movie came out . I was old enough to know better . I’ve actually never seen the whole movie , I knew it was gonna suck when it came out . I waited to rent it , it was worse than I imagined so I didn’t finish it .
I feel every sentiment in this video, i was a HUGE mario fan back when the film was released and it was a historic letdown. But as an adult, in recent years i re watched it and found it charming in a way, now we are lucky to have a real SMB movie that blew my mind at the theater just the other day, now with my kids, we enjoyed it immensely.
I watched this with my grandfather and we were both disappointed. He kept asking me if I wanted to bail....but we watched it thru.... And now, like you...I'm the parent...and I took my girls to see the new movie. And it was loved by all. Even my grandad ❤
I wasn’t Born on 1993 but I did watch the Movie in my Teens in Early 2010s in the Internet and I thought it was Fake but I Later Found Out That It’s the Worst Mistake Nintendo ever did but Now We See they have learned from that Mistake and made a Mario Movie that’s Faithful to the Franchise that I can’t wait to See.
As a kid of 8 years old, I honestly had never seen anything so bizarre before. Now that I’m older, I’m pretty convinced the filmmakers got their hands on some of Mario’s mushrooms. The twin towers scene is so strange it’s almost paranormal.
Your daughter is absolutely precious. Protect her always brother. They grow up so fast snd i cant stress that last part more. I now have a grand daughter whom turns 5 this year. We're both excited about the switch 2. God bless.
I’ve always been a HUGE mario fan, since i was a toddler. I’ve never seen this 1993 movie, surprisingly! Maybe i should watch it to see how horrendous it is. I own a figure of Mario from this film, though I’ve seen the 1986 anime mario movie, and i’m gonna see the new mario movie incredibly soon. My excitement can’t be contained, it looks like what i’ve dreamt of since i was young!
I actually loved the movie as a kid, weirdly enough. The fact it had nothing to do with the games was actually kind of cool to me for some reason (I was a dumb kid)
I am sorry that this movie crushed your childhood dreams. I never saw it as a kid because it looked strange in trailer on TV and all the kids I knew had nothing but bad things to say about it. I was still very disappointed and like you, I wanted a Super Mario Bros movie that was true to the games/cartoons. The first time I saw this movie a few years ago (I still found the movie bizarre and disappointing) at my friend's house who is my age and he grew up liking the movie and my guess is that it's because my friend didn't play video games growing up. My friend was actually quoting all kinds of lines from the movie while we watched it. The Super Mario Bros movie that comes out today really does look exactly like the Mario Bros movie we all dreamed of back in the day. It's amazing how things come full circle and I'm happy for you that now you get to take your daughter to see what is very likely going to be a fantastic movie and give her those great memories.
I Love Super Mario Brothers 1993 ALOT. All the actor's are so good and I Love it and dont care for the bad reviews are hate. I saw this in 1993 when I was 8 years old. I rented it on a Friday night.
You nailed it. I was 14, but I was so let down. I have been a Mario fan since the original, and I was so crushed. But this past year, I got to take my 9-year old, who is also a passionate Mario fan. And it was a great experience. We had a blast and I feel like it made up for what happen to all of us as kids.
I didnt see it theaters, i was born in 88. Currently 34 years old. Did watch it on vhs or cable. But i wasnt upset even though i did love playing mario. But yes i do remember saying this isnt what a Mario movie was sposed to be like!! Lol but i didnt hate the movie. But i did watch the new 2023 mario movie last weekend & i loved it!! Almost teared 😢💙 watched it in 3D. They did am amazing job. Im sorry your father didnt get to enjoy what shoulda been your guys’ experience of what a real mario movie was sposed to be like. But im sure hes happy you & your girl atleast got to enjoy it (:
Whoa I actually caught one of your videos early. I just wanted to comment and say your channel literally became my favorite youtube channel in like a week. It brings back to many memories for me in both the games and the actual times just from looking at that old 90s era camera footage. I hope you can and will continue to make content. I seriously don't know why you don't have 5+ million subscribers or something bro, but keep it up and I bet you will. Wish you all the best and please don't stop this channel haha.
I, too, have memories watching that movie back in 1993. In retrospect, despite its flaws -- and there were many -- I feel that it is an underappreciated cult classic. 'Til the day he died, Bob Hoskins hated how the movie was being directed -- but I give him credit for being a professional and working with the material he had. The fact, that, 30 years after that original movie, the super Mario brothers franchise will finally be realized as a faithful adaptation to the video game, brings a smile to my face. The new movie is one that is going to be shared with future generations for all time.
and yet the critics slated the 2023 Super Mario Bros film. I've seen the Illuminations animations of SMB and it's exactly what you would want in a movie about the Nintendo game.
right bro? just enjoyed it for what it was, not like these neckbeards who think they are movie buffs that collect thousands of dollars in marvel figures.
@@banditmining564 Oh shut up lmao. Even as a standalone movie it was laughable. Especially when you compare it to the monster that was Jurassic Park. Just say you're mad that you can't afford to have anything cool and move on lmao.
@@leezy7028 forgettable? I haven't seen it in years and I still remember everything as clear as day. You can't really say that about a movie that unique and be believable.
I saw an interview with Seth Rogen promoting the new movie and he said that he was very disappointed with the live action Mario movie when he was a kid. He said that he wanted to make sure the new generation wouldn't be disappointed by the new Mario movie the way he was with the live action film which I found very touching. He also said that if the new one was the one he saw as a kid it would've been a different story.
Being a kid from the 80's/90's and also loving everything Nintendo, this movie crushed every fiber in my being as well. Fast forward to 2023, and I took my 8 year old son to see the new one. We both got to experience a wonderful adaptation of our beloved characters. That day felt like a second chance for the kid inside me as well. Love what you do Tyler, and thanks for sharing these intimate memories.
There's always a 75% chance I'm gonna have wet eyes by the time your video is over. I was born in 92. Youngest of 4 kids. So many parallels in our childhoods. Thank you so much for your content.
My son and I collect video games, watch every episode of yours. He is 7 and today, we are going to see Super Mario in the theaters today. I have faith again that this will be good.
I’m so sad for those who didn’t get to see the 2023 version. I hope they can watch it in heaven :). Also I bet the 2023 movie healed the wounds of many who’ve seen the 1993 movie.
Not only did I see the movie in the theater, I saw it at the Cinema 8 in Rosenberg, Texas that was featured in your video! Surprisingly enough, I thought the movie was terrible, but my father liked it!
That's so wild. I get that it was kinda a let down that it wasn't much like the games but I remembering most all of us kids having fun with it as far as I could tell. Definitely don't remember anyone as a kid being "soul crushed". But now everyone seems to of changed their tunes. Strange.
it was definitely weird when I saw it as a kid. If those giant guys were goombas, it was weird that they were giants. I think "myretrolife" (I dunno if he wants to be referred to his name on this channel or not) is right that a roger rabbit style that incorporated cartoon characters as well might have made some people like it more.
Me and my daughter are actualy Jurassic Park fans so we never miss an oportunity to see these movies and play the games i cant imagine how cool it must have been to see it in 93!
You’re 2 years older than me. I was 5 1993. So I wouldn’t have been able to see this. I have now seen it and as a Super Mario Bros movie it’s TERRIBLE, but as an action movie and not related to the franchise it was hilarious. Over the years I’ve learned to respect it as if you have seen Gaming Historian’s video on it, it was a disaster from the birth of it behind the scenes. So I can absolutely see why it turned out the way it did.
I remember watching this movie for the first time in 1998 on TV, when I was 9 or 10 years old. I was a big Mario Fan and back then I didn't even know there was a Live-Action Movie. I was sitting in my room and watching TV, when suddenly a spot comes that anounces Super Mario Mario Bros. The Movie was about to start in 10 Minutes or so. I fast searched for a VHS to record it, sat down and watched it. Well, it was not what I expected, but my heart wasn't crushed, only disappointed. The best thing of the movie was Bob Hoskins as Mario. He was great, looked perfect and his costume at the end was brillant. Everything else was bad.
I remember being 8 and being more excited for this movie, Than Jurassic Park lol Good times though! The last action hero, was my favorite movie that summer
So I was born 4 years after this movie. 1997 to be exact. Like you, Mario was my life as a kid. Well that and "Thomas the Tank Engine". But I first found out about this movie back in early 2009. I was 11 at the time, and just randomly came across the trailer for this movie because I thought "What if I typed in "Super Mario Bros. Movie" on RUclips?". BIG mistake. I saw that trailer. I saw shit getting blown up. I heard "I Got The Power" blaring in the background. I was disgusted by what I saw. However in July of that year, I was 12 by that time, I decided to give the movie a chance cause it was uploaded on RUclips in several parts. I swallowed my pride and watched it and...............I felt like I was forcing myself to like it. Then in late 2010, I was 13 by then, my sisters boyfriend at the time, bought me a DVD copy of the movie. And I feel like after viewing it that way, I did start to feel more fond of the film. But the more I watched it, and the more I showed it tomy classmates for shits and giggles, the more I realized, no this is just not good. Fast forward to 20 year old me in 2017, who had found out that Nintendo was branching back into movies, with their first attempt being an ANIMATED "Super Mario Bros." movie. I felt like my prayers were finally being answered. Like I was getting justice. Then it was announced that Illumination Entertainment (the Minions company) was behind it and I was like "We're fucked, aren't we?". Then cut to 2021, and the cast was announced. Chris Pratt as Mario while Charles Martinet was reduced to background cameo fodder? "Yep. We're fucked.". I was dreading this movie. I thought I was about to live the same nightmare that you experienced in 1993....................then the first trailer was unleashed and..................I...............was given hope. Jack Black knocked it outta the park as Bowser, and Chris Pratt was actually okay with a subtle Brooklyn accent. As more trailers kept coming I was curious but still concerned. Then the "Super Mario Bros." plumbing commercial went viral and it had the plumber rap from "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. At that point, I was sold but still skeptical. Fast forward to yesterday and the movie finally arrived. I met with a couple buddies I haven't seen in person in quite a while since the pandemic, so this was like a reunion. We got our tickets, sat down, and by the time it was over..........all 3 of us........had a good time. Is the film "Best Animated Feature" material? No. But what it was, was 1) A 30 year long overdue apology for the live action disaster we originally got, and 2) Just a feel good family fun romp. I'm glad we finally got an ACTUAL "Super Mario Bros." movie. It felt like justice had finally been served, even if it took 30 years.
I really like the movie. Still watch it from time to time. I'm definitely a OG Nintendo fan being born 1980... and when the end credits teaser came up, I was ready for part 2.
You are way too good at making me tear up because of your videos. I’m crying because of how bad the original Mario movie was, not because of you now being in that father role. Not at all.
I wasn’t around when this movie came out, but I remember first discovering this movie one day after one of my Mario RUclips Poop binges circa 2008 and thinking “Oh my god, there’s a movie??? Why didn’t I hear about this?”. I started watching it (copyright rules were a lot more lax on RUclips) and was a little excited before ever so slowly being disappointed by just how slow and unrelated it felt to the games or even the infamous shows. I even wondered if I was tricked and thought I was watching a totally different movie, but nope! It was, indeed, *supposed to* relate to Super Mario Bros. I still haven’t seen it in full, and I don’t plan on it anytime soon. 😂
I know someone said this but i like how much footage your dad and family in general have of the family and to top it off with the editing music and work YOU put in is stupendous youve been on the grind so keep it up good sir and keep retro gaming alive

PS: I got a little emotional in the ending part of this video, damn I'm gettin old!
this is a great day for all the nintendo generation it is been a long time since i was hype for a movie
can t wait to watch it this weekend
Same bro! Can't wait to take my daughter. :-)
I did watch it back in 93 and was vastly disappointed as well, I do own the movie now on DVD 😂
I didn't watch it in theaters but did when it was released on VHS. I was just as disappointed as you were. But I am so glad that you get to take your daughter to see the version we should have gotten. It's amazing to see that you're carrying on the gaming tradition with her...I love it Tyler.
I saw it in theaters when I was 13 & I remember not hating nor even disliking to be honest, didn't love it either, but at least got entertained
You already know your dad would have been one of the BEST RUclipsrs on the platform if he had the chance.
The new one looks so good.
I remember my aunt calling me to go over and watch the movie when I was 7 as well. Soul crushing
I'm just glad we have a Mario movie now that actually feels like Mario, even if it took us 30 years of waiting for it to happen!
I saw this movie as a kid and I didn't care if it was different from the video games we grew up with. I still love it to this day!
And I can't wait to see the new mario bros movie too!
Yeah same here. I think at that age I couldn't tell the difference between good or bad movies. Just the fact that it was on the big screen was enough.
I do remember thinking it was weird that king koopa was just a dude.
yep, i dont get all these crying kids. it was such a fun movie.
@@justinnewman5533 it's been nearly 3 decades and people are still crying about this movie! Just because the movie was different from the game doesn't mean its awful.
Kinda sad really! Smh
Man I can't manage to watch one of your videos without halfway or at the end be all sentimental and reflecting on my past , thank you , No retro dad with me only Grand parents and mother , but now My little guy will get to experience what I missed.
Been watching random ass videos from 70’s-90’s on youtube as early as 2015. Your channel is hands down one of my favorite ones ive found.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is all absolute GEM!! That movie will live on forever, it's aged fantastically. Super Mario Bros, not so much lol 🤣
It helped birth an MMORPG, too!
There's actually a growing amount of individuals that think WFRR was overrated. I am not one of them, but it's true.
@@SidNightWalker Next thing you're going to tell me is that Star Wars is overrated, what is it with people calling popular media overrated?
@@PrinceFloof eh, what can you say, a lot of people think they have intelligence and their reasoning is valid, even when it's clear their rationale is incoherent at best. There's nothing particularly new about that, but now they can yell really loudly in a very public way thanks to the internet. Incoherently.
@@SidNightWalker Everyone deserves a voice, but not everyone deserves I microphone, lol
Much love!
When you said now your the father taking your kids hit me in the heart. I’m the parent too….. crazy how time goes
I liked both movies for what they were worth. I just love Super Mario Bros.
Its so sad, because the Poor guy (My retro Life), who was being so mad and disappointed at the Super mario Movie, and the movie changes his life. :(
Hollywood couldn’t make a video game adaptation to save its life. We had to wait 38+ years for a REAL Mario movie.
Then what did we just get recently last year
Seriously lmao they sucked at making video game movies took them decades to figure out what actually works/
I can confirm that the 2023 Mario Bros kicks too much ass. I'll be buying on Blu Ray and downloading to every device i own.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is still one of my absolute favorite movies of all time!!
Still angry they cancelled the prequel to keep funding the vastly oevr-budgeted Pearl Harbor.
@@Larry they did?😅
@@Larry at least we got "Cool World" ;;)
I love seeing old movie theater footage or movie theater stories of people going to the movies in the past. Hope you got more of these
As a kid of 8 years old, I honestly had never seen anything so bizarre before. Now that I’m older, I’m pretty convinced the filmmakers got their hands on some of Mario’s mushrooms. The twin towers scene is so strange it’s almost paranormal.
whys it paranormal?
@@banditmining564 it predicted the future in a way.
Your daughter is absolutely precious. Protect her always brother. They grow up so fast snd i cant stress that last part more. I now have a grand daughter whom turns 5 this year. We're both excited about the switch 2. God bless.
I remember the whole Super Mario brothers movie as a advertisement for Pepsi and Reebok. 😂
I’ve always been a HUGE mario fan, since i was a toddler. I’ve never seen this 1993 movie, surprisingly! Maybe i should watch it to see how horrendous it is. I own a figure of Mario from this film, though
I’ve seen the 1986 anime mario movie, and i’m gonna see the new mario movie incredibly soon. My excitement can’t be contained, it looks like what i’ve dreamt of since i was young!
I actually loved the movie as a kid, weirdly enough. The fact it had nothing to do with the games was actually kind of cool to me for some reason (I was a dumb kid)
yeah, it's like going to see a Pokemon movie and it's just all dogs named pokemon names.
The thing with the 1993 film is that it felt like it was made in similar vein to The Terminator and Robocop, but done horribly.
I don't have kids, but the emotion you're expressing with taking your daughter to the new movie is poignant as hell. Any Mario fan can relate.
I Love Super Mario Brothers 1993 ALOT. All the actor's are so good and I Love it and dont care for the bad reviews are hate. I saw this in 1993 when I was 8 years old. I rented it on a Friday night.
Not gonna lie I have a nostalgia blast watching the Mario bros movie idk why but I enjoy the hell outta it lol

I'm glad you saw Jurassic Park as a palate cleanser a week after
and yet the critics slated the 2023 Super Mario Bros film. I've seen the Illuminations animations of SMB and it's exactly what you would want in a movie about the Nintendo game.
I've always liked the OG movie for what it was. Surprisingly I never was looking for a game 1:1 adaptation, even at age 6 when it came out.
right bro? just enjoyed it for what it was, not like these neckbeards who think they are movie buffs that collect thousands of dollars in marvel figures.
@@banditmining564 Oh shut up lmao. Even as a standalone movie it was laughable. Especially when you compare it to the monster that was Jurassic Park. Just say you're mad that you can't afford to have anything cool and move on lmao.
The movie is forgettable to say the least.
You were smart even back then I suppose.
@@leezy7028 forgettable? I haven't seen it in years and I still remember everything as clear as day. You can't really say that about a movie that unique and be believable.
I'm in the minor camp because I'm not mad at the live action SUPER MARIO BROS movie. I enjoyed it for what it was and enjoy it anytime I can watch it.
I was around the same age and I saw it in vhs for the first time. I just couldn’t understand what this was 😂 thanks for an awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it!
This movie was complete trash I am happy we got a real movie for 2023 thank God and more on the way that's how it should have been done
There's always a 75% chance I'm gonna have wet eyes by the time your video is over. I was born in 92. Youngest of 4 kids. So many parallels in our childhoods. Thank you so much for your content.
I feel like i was the only 8 year old back then that liked the movie! seriously felt like I was the only one lol
Haha it's OK you are definitely not alone.
My son and I collect video games, watch every episode of yours. He is 7 and today, we are going to see Super Mario in the theaters today. I have faith again that this will be good.
Thanks for watching Jason. I feel that way too
I finally saw the Super Mario Bros animated movie a few days ago. I got a little teary-eyed because that was the movie I wanted back when I was a kid.
The 2023 Super Mario Movie was the Mario film we were hoping to see in 1993. Could you imagine if we saw the 2023 film as kids?
The film would of sold out nationwide 😅
Oh, I distinctly remember seeing this movie in the theater, and was completely baffled when we left after the movie was over.
Double dragon and SMB movies are on par with each other’s sh!tiness haha
dont forget street fighter with van dame
Indeed. I forgot about that movie and game.
Your old man was taking more video back then than people are today.
Mario is young Bob Hoskins is a fat old balding man nothing like Mario

Outstanding video. I just remember my dad renting it and me and my brothers being so excited to finally see it. I don’t remember much but it didn’t hold our attention and we only watched like 10 min. And we were shocked that it was nothing like what we were expecting. Anyhow, once again, your father and his timeless footage comes through again!
I can literally feel your pain lol ! My brother and sister told me not to watch it 😂, thank you big bro and sis. That movie looks like nightmare fuel 😢
It’s fairly good as long as you don’t think of it as a “true Mario movie” kinda like an alternate universe

Your childhood was amazing and I love all the nostalgia of your RUclips channel.
This was EXACTLY how I felt while watching 1994's STREET FIGHTER in the theaters. The level of excitement I had for that movie was incredible only to be insanely disappointed. Even my favorite actor star at the time Jean-Claude Van Damme wasn't able to save that movie.
