The Seekers were another great Australian folk pop band from the 60's. Judith Durham had such a beautiful voice. She just passed away recently. They had so many great hits including "Georgy Girl", "The Carnival Is Over", "A World Of Our Own", "Morningtown Ride", "Someday, One Day" etc. They have beautiful voices & harmonies. They don't make nostalgic music like this anymore. Reminds me of a simpler time.

The Seekers owned the 1960s, selling over 50 million records. Their music was magical and their song "The Carnival is Over" knocked the Beatles off the number one spot on the charts and is still one of the 50 top selling songs in the world. Their popularity really took off when they performed the theme song to the Michael Caine movie "Georgie Girl." They set a record for singing to an audience of over 200,000 people in an outdoors performance in their hometown of Melbourne, Australia. Judith Durham passed away in 2022 at the age of 79. The Australian state of Victoria held a state memorial service for her.

This little ditty went to number 1 in the UK and Australia and number 4 in the US selling 1.75 million copies worldwide. “The Carniavl Is Over” also went to number 1 in the UK in 1965. They were named “Best New Group of 1964” at the 1965 New Musical Express Poll Winners Awards. They also performed at a Royal Command Perfomance for the Queen Mother in 1966. In 1968 and 1969 their album “Best of The Seekers on the UK album charts knocked off the Beatles” twice and Cream three times before being overtaken by the Moody Blues. They currently rank third (with INXS) in the list of all-time Australian groups behind ACDC and the Bee Gees. Finally as for sounding very Mamas and Papasesque this song was released before the Ms&Ps were even formed. Glad you enjoyed it though!

I was in my early 20s when they topped the charts. This song knocked The Beatles off the #1 spot. Their story is fasinating. They were just 3 very talented guys singing folk songs in the early 60s when they stumbled across Judith (classicly trained) and WOW! Her wonderful unique voice and the terrific harmonies they produced made them one of the most popular folk/pop groups of the 60s. Dusty Springfield's brother Tom wrote this song specically for them, and several other of their big hits. I could give you their fascinating rise to fame, but it would take several pages. Glad to see you guys dabble outside your comfort zone. Thanks

Something I love about this song is the way, on the first line, the voices are all joined in harmony, no particular voice pronounced. But in the second line the girl's voice starts to emerge a little, and on the third line she breaks from the other voices a little to stand out a bit, and while they are all still singing and harmonizing, her wonderful voice stands out very strongly. She has emerged from the music to stand out on her own, loud and clear.

The Seekers name may sound familiar because after they disbanded all too soon in 1968, band member Keith Potger (12 string guitarist and vocalist) stayed in Britain while the others returned to Oz and he was instrumental in the formation of another group The New Seekers that found some success with similar material in the 1970s,. Keith was a part of the original New Seekers line-up, though he later stepped aside to take on a producer's role behind the scenes.

To put this all in context, being the 60’s … The Seekers along with The Easybeats were the first Australian bands to crack the overseas market…. Tough to do when you consider the international acts at the time, And Australia considered a backwater with nothing much to offer as far as the International Music scene was concerned….. we really hit our stride in the 70’s and 80’s….Little River Band, INXS, Midnight Oil, AC/DC and the like…now our music is internationally known…. Great work guys.

Judith Durham gave them there unmistakeable sound. I was a teenager then, and I had a crush on her.

Never grows old; simply & real musical talent, great harmony & Judith’s exquisite voice.
Even up to their retirement from almost a decade ago, The Seekers have maintained that great distinctive sound.
Listen early & often to The Seekers playlists.

It's a lovely old song that takes me back to my childhood, this would have been on the radio a lot back then.

Bigger than the Beatles and the Stones in the UK they got their own TV show! Judith has the most compelling, wonderful, unique voice.

The Seekers were fab and they did have another huge 60s hit, "Georgy Girl". They did have a US rival/ contemporary, Spanky and Our Gang. Give them a listen too, "Sunday Will Never Be the Same", and "Lazy Day".

❤️ The Seekers! Btw, may I suggest Elvis’s gospel music? Why me Lord, You gave me a mountain, He touched me, etc. This is what he loved most of all. Come Christmas there’re carols as well as songs that will knock your socks off!

Keep talking boys. Here for the reaction, not just the song. As an Aussie, I enjoy hearing the similarities and differences between the experiences of growing up in the UK and over here.
“Yeah that was good” or “that was crap, thanks for watching“, doesn’t cut it for me.

This is from the age of "honest" music, where bands could perform the same live or recorded. I miss that so much now. Effects like pitch correction were not even thought of, and would be thought of as "cheating". I started playing bass and guitar in 1964 and have loved playing "honest" music ever since.
This was a favourite of mine back then as I "found" my now wife the day after we left school (in 1965) and married 5 years later. We recently celebrated our 53rd wedding anniversary as I have never found anyone to match her.
