My great-grandfather came upon a cargo ship as a 15 year old illegal immigrant, he ran away from his abusive home in Norway, landed in Geelong, found work, found someone from an affluent high society family who in her own way ran away from their control, she was exiled and they formed what became my family. My other great Grandparents are mixes of Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English decent as far as I am aware.

So true. This song pulls at the heart strings of every Aussie. It is probably the best way to understand how Australians feel about their country. We don't go on about being patriotic, we rarely fly huge numbers of Aussie flags; (just one or so is enough for us). Maybe it is our unusual history as few countries began as penal colonies or perhaps it is our unique and "dangerous wildlife that seems to scare the rest of the world. Whatever it is, it is a great privilege to be a citizen of this beautiful country of diverse environments and great diversity of people.

I never claimed myself an Australian because I thought l don't have the right. Then when l heard that song again after so many years l teared up for many reasons but mainly because at last l felt l belong here too & is very proud. My 6 grandchn are 1st generation Australians & l know its here they will remain. There are still some racial prejudice but these people just need to listen to this song to remind them we are all immigrants besides the indigenous people of

A couple of things mentioned might need some clarification to those who are not Australian.
    - Albert Namatjira - was a renown Aboriginal watercolor artist. Who was a master at creating paintings of Ghost Gum trees and Outback landscapes.
    - Clancy - is an outback stockman character created by the poet A.B. (Banjo) Patterson-.
    - Ned Kelly - was a outlaw/bushranger, who gained legend status with most Australians.
    - Waltzing Matilda - is the name given to the bag carried by a wandering hobo/swagman. As he walked, the bag swung from side to side at each footfall and was it referred to as "waltzing with Matilda."

As a dual British and Australian citizen, I may be able to explain the spirt of Australia to you in a way that bouncer on Neighbours doesn't :) It is a totally different feeling to the UK. It is standing in the outback looking at a vast sky you never knew existed. It is seeing thousands of people from hundreds of miles around come to help when the floods hit. It is the feeling of vast endlessness in the eyes of our first people. It is desert, snow capped mountains, tropical rainforest, savannah, deep remote gorges, lush hills and mountains, incredible islands, temperate, and freezing. All at once. It is so much more than you think.

Sorry for the length of this, but thank you for the respect for our song. Many people feel it should be our national anthem, and it should, although it would require a rewrite to make it work anthemically. We don't teach this with cartoons, we teach with real images that match the history, geography and sociology.
In case it helps to do justice to the beauty of words and music, I've included the lyrics below and followed them with a brief explanation in brackets. As Poms, you'll know some of this.
I came from the dream-time, (For the traditional owners, the first Australians - called Aboriginals by the British - The Dreamtime is the creation time of the world and the things that populate it, living and non-living. )
From the dusty red-soil plains. (Most of the interior of Australia, 'the Outback', is desert, composed of red soil formed from the weathering of the iron-rich rocks found there. Only the fringe of Australia is cities and green, which is why 85% of Australians live near the coast.)
I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flame. (The keeper of the Aboriginal stories and traditions, passed along orally and also in dance around the flame of the corroboree [ceremony].)
I stood upon the rocky shores, I watched the tall ships come. (These are the rocky landforms of Botany Bay [a part of what is now Sydney in the state of New South Wales] close to the landing spot of the incoming First Fleet vessels bringing the first British colonisers - prisoners, soldier guards, and administrators.)
For forty thousand years I've been the first Australian. (It is now known to be closer to 70,000 years that First Nations peoples have been in Australia, the longest continuous civilisation in the world.)
I came upon the prison ship, bowed down by iron chains, (The First Fleet of British ships brought English and Irish convicts, many just sentenced because of the theft of items such as a loaf of bread to feed starving families, or Irish and English Catholics for practising their religion when this was outlawed by Protestant England.)
I fought the land, endured the lash, (The convicts were set to work to clear the inhospitable land for farming, build roads, bridges, dwellings, etc with only limited tools, and were whipped to keep them working, or for infringements, sometimes with a cruel weapon called a ‘cat o' nine tails’ a whip of nine thongs each tipped with metal.)
And waited for the rains. (There were long periods of dry, often drought, and intense heat, with the heavy rainfall “the rains” providing welcome relief.)
I'm a settler, I'm a farmer's wife on a dry and barren run, (Settler was the name for freed convicts, or free people who chose to settle in Australia; a run is a cattle or sheep farm. The runs allocated to the freed convicts were the less desirable, the more arable land was given to the British administrators - governors, etc.)
A convict, then a free man, I became Australian. (Because convict sentences were seven or more years long, and return ship to England was too costly for most to afford, most convicts stayed once they had served their sentences. They were then released from bondage and became free men and women.)
I'm the daughter of a digger, who sought the mother lode. (A digger [later the name for Aussie soldiers] at that time was a prospector in the gold rush that began in 1852 in the goldfields of Bathurst, New South Wales, and Ballarat and Bendigo in the state of Victoria. Prospectors dreamed of finding that possibly mythical, incredibly rich vein of gold, the mother-lode, from which small nuggets and specks washed into streams, or smaller veins were found in rocks buried in the earth.)
The girl became a woman on the long and dusty road. (Families walked very long distances and in harsh conditions to reach the goldfields-girls becoming women, having to mature to survive the trek.)
I'm a child of the Depression, (The Great Depression of 1930s followed the Wall Street Crash in the USA, and saw many families around the world lose all their savings, job retrenchments followed as businesses collapsed, many families became destitute. This hit bushies and outback Aussies especially hard.)
I saw the good times come, (The 1940s started off with an economic resurgence, and this continued through the 40s and 50s, especially with the cessation of war in 1945.)
I'm a bushie, (An Aussie who lives in the 'bush', the region between the cities and the Outback.)
I'm a battler, (What Aussies call ordinary people, ones who just get by making a living and a life.)
    I am Australian.
We are one, but we are many, And from all the lands on earth we come. We'll share a dream and sing with one voice, "I am, you are, we are Australian" (Australia is an incredibly multicultural nation. Since the First Fleet dropped anchor in 1788, close to ten million settlers have moved from across the world to start a new life in Australia, eight million of them since the end of the Second World War. The early years were convicts, free settlers, Germans escaping religious persecution and Irish the Potato Famine, Chinese with the gold rushes, South Sea islanders working the sugar plantations, post-WW2 migration from Britain, Greece, Italy, Syria, Lebanon, etc, and Vietnamese after the Vietnam war, then more recently refugees from conflict in areas such as Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Ukraine.)
I'm a teller of stories, I'm a singer of songs, I am Albert Namatjira and I paint the ghostly gums. (Albert Namatjira [1902-1959] was a famous Aboriginal artist who painted in non-traditional Aboriginal style. His paintings of Australian Ghost Gums [a smooth, white-barked eucalyptus tree] became famous and commanded huge prices.)
I'm Clancy on his horse, ('Clancy of the Overflow', a famous poem of an Australian drover [stockman, what Americans would call a cowboy] by A. B.Paterson, known as Banjo Paterson.)
I'm Ned Kelly on the run, (Ned Kelly was an infamous Australian bushranger [Australian outlaw] who led a gang - the Kelly Gang. He wore distinctive rough metal armour with a conical helmet. He was caught and executed at 25 years of age.)
I'm the one who waltzed Matilda, ('Matilda', from the famous Australian song 'Waltzing Matilda', words by Banjo Paterson, is the swag; the gear of the drover/bushie was placed on a large cloth and the corners lifted and tied together in a knot. A stick was then pushed through under the knot to form the 'swag'. This was then carried perpendicularly across the bushie's shoulder, which made it swing, or 'waltz', across the bushman’s back as he walked.)
    I am Australian.
I'm the hot wind from the desert, I'm the black soil of the plains, I'm the mountains and the valleys, I'm the drought and flooding rains. (Australia is one of the driest countries on Earth. Most of the eastern edges of the land are mountainous, so the rains fall on the mountains and coastal regions and usually do not reach inland. The winds coming from the South Pole are not hot enough to carry water vapour, so they are dry as they swing across the huge state of Western Australia, and become heated as they travel inland to central Australia. The phrase ‘drought and flooding rains’ is from a famous Australian poem by Dorothea Mackellar called “My Country.”)
I am the rock, (Uluru is the famous huge red monolith in central Australia [called Ayer’s Rock in 1873 by the explorer William Gosse after Sir Henry Ayers, the Chief Secretary of South Australia at the time, then returned to its traditional owners in 1985 and renamed with a First Nations' traditional name])
I am the sky (The southern sky has quite different star patterns/constellations to the northern hemisphere, including the Southern Cross which appears on the Australian flag.),
The rivers when they run, (River beds are often dry because of Australia’s low rainfall, the rivers towards the centre of Australia only run after heavy rains.)
The spirit of this great land, I am Australian.
We are one, but we are many, And from all the lands on earth we come. We share a dream and sing with one voice, "I am, you are, we are Australian." (The dream is one of inclusion and equality for all: First Nations people, descendants of the colonisers, and people who have come here in later years from all lands. We are not there yet, but we are actively working towards it.)
    Cheers

Thanks for your elaboration and explanation of the meaning of the lyrics - really the song is an abbreviated history lesson, mostly of Australia’s white settlement, while acknowledging there are many thousands of years of indigenous history before that. It’s an emotive song that stirs heartstrings everywhere, and not just of Aussies. Judith Dunham’s crystal-clear voice and vocals are superb as always, and for me it will be her voice that I always hear singing this. This always brings tears to my eyes and I think I would lose it completely if I heard this after I had been overseas for a long time. I definitely think this should be our national anthem, and it seems to be the most popular candidate amongst Australians - and others! Our current anthem is total uninspired in comparison. The only issue with this is that the song is five verses long and anthems cannot be too long, for obvious reasons. Do we only sing one verse and leave much of the story out, as it’s the whole story that makes sense - how can we stop at the “tall ships” and leave the Depression, Ned Kelly, and the character of the country out? It’s the sung words that make this song so powerful. Do we have an abbreviated song for international use and ceremonies, but sing the full lyrics at school assemblies? How do we manage it? That’s my dilemma. However I love this song and definitely want it as our anthem. Vale Judith Durham and her stunningly beautiful voice.

@@kemba1959 I've actually rewritten the song with two verses to fit the requirements of a 1-verse and 2-verse anthem. The first verse encapsulates the first two original verses, the second covers the landscapes and includes the regions. I've sent it to Canberra, as a starting point for better songwriters than I, for when we make the move to independence. This is the starting point for a first verse:
"I come from the Dreamtime, First Nations I remain.
I came upon the prison ship, bound down by iron chain.
I left my own, I chose this home, from war and strife I’ve run.
My heart is in this great land, I am Australian."

Some time ago somewhere, I saw a post that described this song as one of a number of "love songs" to Australia. I so agree. I rarely hear Aussies claim to be patriotic, but so often I hear people say how much they love this country. It is not taught and there is no "brainwashing", just a genuine love of country, largely driven by a sense of "mateship" .

Judith Durham had the most incredible voice! You only have to hear a few notes to know that it is she who is singing. A unique voice that blended so well with the men in the group. Keith Potger, the guy playing the 12-string guitar, did all their vocal arrangements, whilst Bruce Woodley (the one who began the song) wrote a huge number of songs in the 60’s, including a few collaborations with Paul Simon. Athol Guy (the Bassist) was also a very talneted and accomplished musician and singer. Four very talented people, who had a unique sound.

Either this song or I still Call Australia Home are the two favourites. Yet we get stuck with Advance Australia Fair and the public were not asked. I wanted God Save The Queen Back after hearing what we got. I don’t have a King.
Judith left the Seekers when she married and her husband was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease. She made albums on her own where all money went to that charity but she often filled in when needed. She passed away about a week different to Olivia Newton John and both were given State Funerals for their Charity work.
Judith was left with a lung disease from having measles as a child and that is what took her life. I am always amazed that she had a massive stroke where she had to learn to walk and talk again, a lung disease. Yet she still had that voice and it never changed. She was an amazing lady but so was our Livvie. Thank you.

Thanks for this warm reaction guys... They were actually quite big in the UK.... Georgie Girl was a number one hit there. So many great songs from them over the yeas. ps it could never be our National Anthem because of the lyrics "I am You are We are Australian" I don't think this would go well singing it say at an Olympic Medal Ceremony lol The other countries might not like being told they are Australians..lol But we here in Aus love it and as you said a great song for Australia Day or at any footy or sports arenas.

the singers in this video use a number of Australian terms and slang, like bushie and batter, bushie means someone who doesn't live in a city and a battler is someone who works hard for the money they make, there are also a number of Aussie terms and slang in the song and any Australian that knows this song holds it close to there heart, i still get emotional when i hear it and ive heard it many times being an Australian myself, i was raised in small towns with less than 500 people, at least 3 towns that my family lived in when i was young had less than 500 people, including my family so yes i consider myself a bushie and a battler, i am Australian

Greetings from the land down under. I was born here over 70 years ago now and the song touches on so many heartstrings for older Australians such as myself. So much is hard to understand for people overseas so a quick primer for this video.
The music right at the start is from the Didgeridoo and the opening stanza refers to the original Australians who walked across the land bridge from Asia and settled this country for the first time.
A bushie is anyone who lives and makes their living in the remote areas of Australia.
A battler is anyone who has to live a harsh and sometimes desperate life due to circumstances.
Clancy on his horse is from the Poem " Clancy of the overflow".
Ned Kelly is the famous Australian bushranger (Outlaw)
Albert Namatjira was known for his glorious watercolor renditions of the harsh Australian outback.
For further info is you care for it.

Oh, plus a touch of Rhinelander from Neunkirchen in Westphalia. But we are a new race. Australian.

For 24 years, I'd timed my return to the ground, after securing my seat, to avoid both. My sole regret is that I did that in 1994 so missed that performance (to balance, I also missed Meatloaf).

A guy got up and sang this at the Andre Rieu in Sydney concert. It wasn't a patch on Judith and her boys though. A much better version.
I thought the Seekers were great in the 60s Judith had a sweet voice, the harmonies were great and they sang bouncy tunes. It was a sad day when they split up. The last song at the farewell concert being the Carnival is over, a real heartbreaker.
You're right, it would me a great anthem for sporting occasions nice reaction fellas.

I love the history including the indigenous first Australians as well.
They still very much give me a Peter Paul and Mary and/or The Mama's and The Papa's sound to them.
I can understand the push to make it their official national anthem.
It's certainly a better song than what someone here once tried to have our National Anthem replaced with.

The first verse acknowledges the Indigenous peoples, known as The First Nations of Australia. The second verse is referring to the coming of European settlement. The third verse tells of the hardiness and determination of the people. The fourth verse talks about our folklore and culture, that defines who we are. And the fifth verse acknowledges the land in all it's splendour, and the storms and droughts we battle. The chorus ties it all together, relating to our heritage and our ability to celebrate the merging of our cultures.

For your information, Albert Namatjira was an Aboriginal-Arrernte man who painted many things and was the first Indigenous person to have a wide range of Australian and overseas fans. One notable fan was Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II, with whom he met on a few occasions, and he was awarded the Queen's Coronation Medal in 1953.
Clancy on his horse refers to Clancy of the Overflow, which was a poem written by Banjo Paterson. The poem offers a romantic view of rural life. It is widely considered one of his best works.
Edward (Ned) Kelly (December 1854 - 11 November 1880) was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader and convicted police murderer. One of the last bushrangers, he is known for wearing a suit of bulletproof armour during his final shootout with the,e police.
The term ‘Waltzing Matilda’ is Australian slang for "Walking on foot (Waltzing) with one’s belongings in a Matilda (Swag), slung over one’s shoulder. The famous Australian song, ‘Waltzing Matilda’, was written by Banjo Paterson.

Cheers guy your not a bad bloke's
Just let you know the reason it was the send off
Was because Judith had a stroke only months before recording that
If you notice she sitting on a stool and only holding mic in one hand and facial droop
She was paralysed down one side of her body and refused medical orders to be their and sing
Judith effort is the epitome of the Australian spirit never give up even in the harshest of time
Sadly Judith passed recently after her stroke but has left a legacy for centuries to come
The gentleman who starts the song and plays guitar wrote the song as well
Its our history from conception to today and it starts with indigenous music as well he speaks as they watch the tall ships come
The song unites everyone and every culture here and dosent exclude anyone rather unit everyone and doesn't hide the bad time's
Your not bad for a couple of pommy blokes 😉 🦘🇦🇺👍
